Internet-of-Things Internet of Things (IoT) is a network environment in which smart objects embedded with electronics, sensors and software are enabled to sense and transfer data over a network without human or computer intervention.
IoT has evolved out of wireless technology revolution
IoT has taken Internet and networks to places such as manufacturing sites, healthcare facilities, transportation and energy grids
Advanced Micro-electromechanical equipment and increased internet connectivity have brought IoT in to limelight
Evolution…..
It is expected that IoT gateway technology will lighten up 500-700 million smart homes by 2020 (First Post: Article).
Gartner a research firm estimates that there are 5 billion IoT devices with industries and consumers today and the number is expected to grow five times by 2020.
Experts states that in the next five years the desired hype of IoT applications will adds smart washers, dryers and Smart lighting to the numerous homes.
Wolf’s group predicts that the number of IoT systems will reach 15 million by 2019 which were 1.5 million U.S. homes in 2013.
Making Difference….. IoT gives an edge to enterprises in
Faster movement of product to market place
Compliance with regulatory authorities
Increased efficiency
Continuous Innovation
Cope up with constantly changing supply chain demand
Challenges‌.. Compatibility: Not all the devices can communicate with each other as there is no universally agreed coding language or protocol Connectivity all the time: Internet connectivity should be up all the time to ensure real-time communication between the devices and systems Privacy concerns: Privacy means a lot to the customers, there could be security threats to the systems with fraudulent hackers
Benefits‌‌ IoT connects sensors and machines, adds value by leveraging the data collected real-time with which enterprises gain insights in to equipment performance at industrial site or product sales or customer preferences or purchasing behavior based on the application area. Enterprises can achieve marketing automation with IoT devices collecting the data related to customer locations, preferences, buying patterns and intentions. Real-time supply chain analytics are made possible with IoT devices (RFID) that continuously monitor the product sales.
