CATENA HEALTHWORKS INCORPORATED SITE : CHICAGO, IL, USA | TEACHING OFFICE : CANON DESIGN | STUDIO INSTRUCTOR : PROF. BILL WORN

PROJECT BRIEF The primary goal with this project was to conceptualize a vision for community hospitals that fosters communal health and well-being. We strived to provide Catena with a guide rail to emerge as a far-reaching health campus that is set to actuate a culture for experience, wellness and discovery. This guiderail also encapsulates the future nuances of unprecedented scenarios such as the impact of technology, global pandemics and so on. In a nutshell, it has the resilience to flex bed numbers, mutate internal configurations to adapt with technology and even flip into alternate use in case healthcare goes virtual!

This focal point allowed us to zone the site in a way that created an interesting community concourse around the node. this in-turn facilitated connections to the existing facility, enabling the entire campus to be linked via a programmed link that could act as a magnet for the community to promote inclusiveness, interaction & experience. The starting point of our vision began with the community as center. To conceptualize this vision we began sketching axis around the node intersection at Michigan and 26th street into the site and radially into the context.

WHAT IS SCENARIO PLANNING? As an introduction, Scenario planning is a strategic tool that was developed by Herman Kahn of the US Military in the 1950’s to predict and prepare for potential scenarios in a warzone. Subsequently, it has been immensely used by global business conglomerates to build-in resilience for the company’s future. Interestingly, It has a fairly high level of applicability in architecture, especially in healthcare wherein the future of healthcare is highly dependent on technology, cost and a risk of the unknown! (Pandemics).

SCENARIOS FOR RESILIENT FUTURES We employed Scenario planning to investigate four potential trajectories that the future of healthcare might take. The X-axis in the scenario graph symbolizes the technology impact on size i.e. ‘completely virtual’ or ‘High-tech physical’ whereas the Y-axis represents the model of care i.e. ‘Preventive’ or ‘Curative’. We, then consolidated the derivate of the four zones in the scenario graph in to broad high-level characteristics as resilience in the design to flex the number of beds as it requires, mutate internal configurations to adapt with newer technology and even flip into a hotel or a mixed-use facility in case healthcare goes completely virtual!

RUSH CENTRE FOR ADVANCED HEALTHCARE SITE : CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA | TEACHING OFFICE : HDR ARCHITECTS | STUDIO INSTRUCTOR : DR. MICHAEL KIM

PROJECT BRIEF A green field Oncology expansion for the existing campus of Rush healthcare in Chicago - aimed as an appratus to render highest quality of cancer care possible. The design concept carefully analysed various micro and macro factors to concieve this development as a harmonious compliment to thE neighbouring community as well as to create a highly responsive and dynamic environment for the patients & various users.

The design process began with an exhaustive analysis of various goals and objectives for the project which eventually narrowed down to ‘Revolutionary cancer care’ and Honest Community Empathy’. Subsequently, an in depth study of patient’s psychometry along with medical departments followed in order to create naturally flowing movements on the inside circumambulating an expansive central atrium for natural light and energy. Project goals and objectives - analysed and streamlined into two major ‘Design drivers’

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSON EAST CAMPUS SITE : WISCONSIN | WORKING OFFICE : HKS | CATEGORY: GREEN FIELD AMBULATORY BLOCK | INVOLVEMENT : CD AND SD

PROJECT BRIEF A signature project for HKS, East Campus expansion was meant to be a flagship hospital for the University of Wisconsin hospitals. In order to achieve this HKS employed its cutting edge research on ambulatory hospitals called ‘Flexx’ which primarily delves in to the flexibility of out patient ambulatory spaces makes them high resilient to incoming technological mutation and unprecedented scenarios whilst prioritising patient safety, staff satisfaction, ease of maintenance and construction. It would safe to state that apart from level 01 which is oncology and Imaging, the entire building upto level 06 is completely modular composes of identical ambulatory pods with slight nuances for distinct specialties. My role in this project encompassed the CD and SD stage wherein I was responsible to schematic design of the entire Oncology, Imaging, phlebotomy and public areas along with BIM set-up, management, sustainability studies and spatial visualization through Revit and Enscape.

Furthermore, it aims to engage with the community through familiar vernacular, thus creating a connection whilst simultaneously highlighting the brand through use of signature material. The timelessness of the design intends to associate the building’s health and well-being to connotate a positive experience that engages with human scale.

AAKASH HEALTHCARE HOSPITAL

SITE : DWARKA, NEW DELHI, INDIA | PRACTICING OFFICE : CREATIVE DESIGNER ARCHITECTS | SCOPE : COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN SITE : NEW DELHI, INDIA | WORKING OFFICE : CDA | CATEGORY: CREEN FIELD ARCHITECTURE

PROJECT BRIEF Aakash Healthcare, A green field construction on a sprawling 4 acres of land, in the suburbs of Dwarka was envisioned to be a beacon of highest quality contemporary healthcare in north India. The project was conceptualised as a concise block with carefully worked out inter-departmental relationships, around an open, central courtyard. Curated around the principles of solar passive design, The longer side of the building aligns perfectly along the N-S orientation, ensuring ample amount of natural light in the building during most times of the day. Saint Gobain's highly efficient DGU's [Planitherm] allowed expansive spans of the skin to be glazed, permitting substantial amount of natural light to penetrate in the interior and thereby considerably, saving on the electrical energy use. Simultaneously, The glass's low - e value almost ceases the heat gain, resulting in a substantial slash in the heat load and hence adding to the overall energy savings.

DIYOS MENS HEALTH CENTER SITE : NEW DELHI, INDIA | WORKING OFFICE : CDA | CATEGORY: ADAPTIVE REUSE

PROJECT BRIEF Once a derelict residential dwelling in the chic suburbs of South Delhi, This structure was con-ceived to be the most fitting by the architects for a one-of-a kind men fertility chain which was looking to make its debut with a flagship clinic. The building had clocked over 40 years, nearly touching the red mark of its life time, theoretically. The physical condition however, was eva-luated and found to be apt for a quick turnaround. The translation of its planning from a residen-tial dwelling to that of a clinic foresaw major structural challenges due to the walls being load bearing and absence of any RCC member in the structure. This was augmented by strengthening and retrofitting with structural steel, injection grouting etc. at multiple locations where existing walls were being knocked off and new ones were made, thus adding another 2-3 decades to the life. of the building.

ELECTREEGAME ENTERTAINMENT WORKS SITE : CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS, USA | TEACHING OFFICE : ARCO MURRAY | STUDIO INSTRUCTOR : PROF. TOM LOEW

PROJECT BRIEF This project stems from an experimental collaboration between UIUC and a national design Build firm, Arco Murray to conceive a fitting model for an entertainment center in Champaign. The model is anticipated to be robust not only from a feasibility standpoint but also its capability to curate a new culture for the demographic of Champaign. Developed in consonance with Arco, the concept pivots around a feasible program along with a modular yet experiential prototype i.e. scalable for a variety of locations whilst establishing an everlasting brand experience. The program of this revolution gaming arcade is essentially various forms of simulation gaming experiences along with field golf driving that are strategically blended in with dining and lounging

The ability of an experience oriented design enhances its marketability. Therefore, emphasizing on the way users navigate, check in, dine, game and so on, to be create an experience that is intriguing and seamless has the primary project goal. This includes study of user movements in the facility, the visual experience of the architecture and the user interface of the technology.

ELECTREEGAME SPINE LAYOUT Minimum Viable Prototype

STRUCTURE AND MECHANICALS The structural concept also attempts to compliment the financial feasibility of the design through its modular approach that allows quicker off-site fabrication, that is economical and quality controlled. The Mechanical system also resonates with the modular theme by augmentation of all the ducting over the circulation aisles. Additionally, a comparative analysis of the design’s energy simulation with and without PV panels on a mere 30 percent of the roof area accounts for over $ 10000 saving in the annual energy cost while exceeding the 2030 challenge by 7 units! AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM The program of this revolution gaming arcade is essentially various forms of simulation gaming experiences along with ďŹ eld golf driving that are strategically blended in with dining and lounging. The two games capitalize on their distinct age group popularity that targets a much larger demographic of Champaign along with their exponential industry growth, nationally. Henceforth, the current absence of these games in Champaign makes it an ideal opportunity to tap into. Intervening in one of the oldest and most popular Commercial zone of Champaign I.e. near Marketplace mall, further strengthens the program feasibility. To additionally reinforce the program viability, the intervention is designed on a site that is a little generous than needed which renders the exibility to tap into an array of large- scale outdoor events that happen in Champaign every month. This not only adds revenue but allows a much larger program exposure through enhanced foot traďŹƒc near the facility.

FACET EXPERIENCE

HYDROSCOPIC HEADWAY : SEED BANK AND GALLERY SITE : CAHOKIA MOUNDS, COLLINSVILLE, ILLINOIS, USA | TEACHING OFFICE : - | STUDIO INSTRUCTOR : PROF. SCOTT MURRAY

PROJECT BRIEF The intervention sits on a UNESCO world heritage site which was last inhabited in 1100 AD. The design pays homage to the historic relevance of the site through its unique form that seamlessly blends in to the surroundings and subtly emerges out of the landscape. The design of the Seed bank integrates functions such as museum, community workshops, seed bank and a green house. These are aimed to reinforce the eminence of the site by educating the visitors through its museum and gallery and also positively activating the space by integrating the surrounding community in to its workshops.

The entire landscape design of the site attempts to bring back the flora and fauna that once existed on the site along with a network of water channels that begins and ends into a reservoir. This reservoir suffices for all the building and landscape water needs along with navigating the visitors along the site by flowing along the pathways. Additionally, the landscape integrates bio swales to prevent soil erosion.

MUMBAI CITY MUSEUM EXPANSION SITE : MUMBAI, INDIA | TEACHING OFFICE : ACADEMIC | CATEGORY: GREEN FIELD EXPANSION

design breif A century old heritage museum seeks to expand, adding an array of functions such as contemporary arts museum, spaces for art festivals, artist’s retreat, archieve research etc. in a contemporary stance. The design pedagogy aimed at retaining the importance of the heritage block and yet be a statement of the modern day Mumbai. The highly challenging realm of the campus due to presence of the heritage block demanded an in-depth study of the site, surroundings and the neighbhood to establish vista’s from the main access ways that could sketch the culmination from the heritage to the contemporary. The zoning attempts to embrace the heritage block, circum-venting a gradually elevating structure around it. A lot of emplasis has been given to the visitor experience wherein the planning creates concious interactions between the artist’s and the visitors to generate interest. The amalgamation of the old and the new happens at two distinct levels, one through the grand central courtyard that sits between the two blocks, hosting grand events and exhibitions and the second at the fifth floor level through an iconic, floating amphitheatre that aims at seamlessly blending with the heritage block.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The museum employs pre-fabricated RCC framed structure for the main museum with friction pile footings to combat the sandy soil of Mumbai. The floating amphitheatre is suspended by a huge steel truss connecting to the vertical lift tower.

The ‘double skin’ exterior is totally operable and the BMS has a responsive mode, wherein the building skin mechanically expands and contracts thus regulating the daylight and the heat again to raise the energy efficiency level. Further, The building shell has a huge radiant sculpture installation that absorbs the heat from the vertical heat column to maintain the internal thermal comfort.

The director cabin sits far back in the SW corner, allowing for a potential, central studio zone to exuberate energy into the entire space, making it the iso-centre of the office. This is surrounded by an open loop diverging along the East orientation, housing staff workstations. To further accentuate the experience, The table loop pulls up likea cloth along an axis, allowing people to walk around under it. The very move of passing through a flexible loop is meta physically symbolised with enlightenment, which is supposed to happen through a small design library housed under neath. This visual axis extends to the entrance wait via a thin linear puncture in the wall, creating a seamless coherent vista.

PRIVATE

An architect's office is a space that is generally conceived to be a springboard for architectural dialogue, creativity and design. It should, hence unfold and interact in a way that its users feel connected with each other and the spatial setting around. A 1900 Sq. feet open, purely rectangular floor plan had immense potential to explore this aspect. There doesn't exist a perfect definition of what causes 'creativity'. However, an insight into human psychology and the way our minds respond to its surroundings could probably help shape a potentially responsive environment for an architect to work. The entrance wait orients the visitor directly into the meeting room without protruding into the privacy of studio space.

SPACE THAT STIMULATES "Curves are, in general felt to more beautiful than straight lines, They are graceful, pliable and lead to a burst of activity in the brain leading to innovation and experience" quote s a psychologist, Kate Cordon. The curved 'Enlightenment galore' is a spatial stimuli that is meant to evoke a dialogue in the user's mind. This frozen energy is made to travel further, extending across all tables forming a seamless virtual experience. The ƥ and functionally resourceful. The design of the meeting room is extremely fundamental, carrying forward the 'stimuli' of the studio in the form of a vertical panel seamlessly ƪ Ǥ ƪ as the 'sliding white-boards' which doubles up as privacy screens for the meeting. The entrance wait area is meant to be the most inviting and soothing spatial setting possible. The genuineness of raw exposed concrete all around and a seamless curved section attempts to interact with the soul. The space is further fused with energy by dint of yellow coloured furniture and props. The project 'display-book' panel, each for every typology makes a statement right at the entrance along with a thin layer of moss ǡ ƪ Ǥ ̹ ƥ ̹ ̹ 'design', traversing into the phenomenology of the space. It requires the innate aura of space and the materials to interact with the people and inspire.
