professional work OCCUPATION: ARCHITECT ENGINEER COMPANY: TWINSWORLD GEN. LOCATION: SALMIYA, KUWAIT START DATE: JUNE 2021

In June 2021, I started working for a small residential design firm as an architectural engineer, where I developed into being a team leader for the 3D department. My responsibilities include producing high-quality renders and/or video representations of designs, producing 2D layouts and presentations for clients, and supervising my team and teaching new employees the programs we use. The majority of the projects were residential ones. I worked on full interior design projects, as well as exterior design. All of the projects shown I have worked on singularly from start to finish.

4

Lighting Options

All of the renders shown in this portfolio are done on 3Ds Max using the Corona renderer. The standard for our company was to produce 3 different lighting styles per shot: one using artificial and natural light, one with only artificial light, and one with only natural light. Lighting is a vital element in interior design. The reason we produce 3 different light options is because the way colours and materials show vary with every type of lighting. It is incredibly important to take into consideration the effects of lighting on any interior design project.

5

Bedroom Design

A large number of the spaces I have designed have been master bedrooms. Each client has come in with different requirements that have allowed me to develop a large portfolio of designs. As I have designed over 30 bedrooms in a short span of time, the challenge I have faced is to always be coming up with new, creative designs without being repetitive. Most clients have requested modern, high-end luxury designs. Some common materials I have used in my designs include: marble panels, ceramic slabs, wood panels, wood louvers, wallpapers, black/clear mirrors, gold strips, and creative wall paints. All of these of course have to be available in the Kuwait marketplace.

Bathroom Designs

Wash areas and bathrooms are also some of the spaces that I have designed the most as there tends to be the largest number of them in residential projects. As with bedrooms, the ideas for bathroom designs could be repetitive as there’s a small variety of materials that could be placed in bathrooms. Functionality and comfort are the most important factors to consider with bathroom designs. In terms of the design itself, the key to the design is matching the different options of ceramic tiles with the wash basin design. The technical considerations of Kuwait residential plumbing systems are also vital in the design of any washroom or toilet.

7

Halls & Living Rooms

Reception areas, diwaniyas, muqalats (floor seating diwaniyas), dining rooms and living halls are all types of gathering spaces that have been included in my scope of designs. With designing such spaces, an understanding of the Kuwaiti culture and the usage of such rooms is required. Each room has it’s own function and occasion, and should be designed with that in mind. I have found that with such spaces is where my creativity can really be set loose and I can explore different furniture and wall cladding layouts to suit the space.

Pools & Gardens

I have also had the pleasure of designing luxury outdoor spaces in a villa, such as pools and gardens. Typically in a Kuwaiti-style house, swimming pools are placed in the basement - either with an opening to the sky, or completely indoors. That is because that location allows for the most privacy for its residence. When it comes to garden spaces however, they are typically on the ground floor to allow the easiest access to guests visiting the residence. The key consideration when designing such spaces is to use materials that are waterproof and durable to the harsh weather conditions in Kuwait. Some examples are aluminium cladding, outdoor ceramic tiles, GRC panels and natural stone.

9

Neo-Classic Design

Here I have chosen to showcase a design based on a specific style a client asked for. While the client had described his request for a design as a classical one, he sent us pictures of references that included some modern elements. Thus, I decided to present him with a neo-classic design. This spread exhibits the ground floor, which had two large halls spaces separated by a wall, an outdoor garden, and a Moroccan-style sitting room. One of the hall spaces includes a formal reception and dining table, while the other one features a grand staircase, a smaller dining table and a more casual seating area. The majority of the wall and ceiling designs include classic cornices mouldings, though I introduced some modern touches in my furniture choices, flooring, and in the use of materials

HIGH-TIDE THEME: STUDIO X - SENIOR PROJECT

PROJECT TYPE: BEACH-THEMED MALL DATE: SPRING 2020

PROF: ANNARITA CORNARO

For a city of a population of only 3

million people, as of now there are 65 malls and 10 still under construction. Malls are an intergral part of the social life for residents as Dubai is a largely consumer-based society and because they provide an easy choice for social events as a result of the harshness of the weather. However, the trends of retail shopping are currently changing, with typical standards of consumerism going down. The shift to e-commerce has caused the abandonment of many malls around the city. As a result, malls have experienced a shift from being retail-oriented to being centers of entertainment. The theme(s) of a mall also holds a great influence in its level of success. Through this is where Dubai has developed a phenomenon of activities and experiences inside mall.

12 12

Thesis Summary Throughout my thesis research, I have studied the different types of malls of Dubai, as the state of malls is currently stating with the shift to online shopping. I had reached the conclusion that there are three different categories of malls in Dubai: neighborhood, regional, and megamalls. After assessing the states of each type of mall, I came to the conclusion that the most unstable type of mall was the regional mall, which are defined as medium-sized malls with under two forms of entertainment inside the mall. Those malls were either very successful, or very unsuccessful. For my project, I wanted to use the space of an already-existing unsuccessful mall, instead of creating adding to the list of endless malls in Dubai. The mall that had the most potential as a site for my project was Sunset Mall, a mall located on Jumeirah Road right by the beach. The mall’s conditions were very bad, where most of it was inactive with closed stores. The beach also presented a great opportunity to design a beach-themed mall, where beach-goers could access the mall directly from the beach. The idea of having a theme for the mall was very important, as themed malls were generally one of the more successful attributed to making a mall popular in the city. The main concept for the mall was to manipulate the floor as well as the roof to mimic the topography of the beach. The ground floor ramps down to an underground floor, while the roof the entirely accessible to provide a nice vantage of the beach-side. The mall functions are included in forms that pierce through the roof to connect the underground floor, ground floor and the roof.

Underground Floor Plan

The underground floor is designed so that the topography is changing to imitate a beach topography. The floor is manipulated to allow for two areas that are evened out, for an amphitheatre and an outdoor park. Half of the area is then covered by the ground floor slab to create an indoor shopping area with air conditioning, to combat Dubai’s harsh weather environment for half of the year. 20

The ground floor plate only covers half the site area. The floor is mainly outdoor space that acts as a plaza for easy accessibility from the beach side to the other of Jumeirah road. The largest form is where the most of the stores are located, which also leads directly to the shopping area in the underground level. The roof is accessible from the two points at the north area of the site.

The picture above shows the main pedestrian entrance to the mall - from the beach-side. As shown, the roof slab has been manipulated to act as a ramp to access the roof, while the floor has been also manipulated to access the underground level. The plates that act as terraces on the roof can also be seen in the render. A sandetched finishing is used to reflect sand and add on the beach theme of the mall., The picture on the right shows the park on the underground level. The floor was formed to allow the ground to level out for the park space, as well as for an amphitheare space. 21

[un]cloud STUDIO: STUDIO VIII - CONSTRUCTION PROJECT TYPE: OFFICE BUILDING DATE: SPRING 2019

PROF: IGNACIO NIETO DE LA CAL

Un[cloud] is an office building located in Bur Dubai. The building is designed for a single-tenant media company. it has a mixed-use typology to invite the public on the ground level, which contains retails and cafes. The project’s name is derived from the function of the building, in the way that the activities of the building aim to “uncloud” your mind, while the [cloud] is a metaphor to use the building as a “cloud” online system that stores your information,. Throughout our programs. we apply a method of “blurred hierarchy” by placing our semi-public programs such as co-working spaces higher up than the ground level, working our way up to some enclosed meeting room spaces. Collaboration is a key aspect of contemporary office buildings, especially ones in the media field. The aim of this building is to invite people in the media field as well as outside of it to have a space to collaborate, as well as interacting with the surrounding landmarks and locals to create content. This design is contextually-sensitive and tries to embody Bur Dubai’s building identities, materiality, and activities to a more innovative level for the future generations of office buildings.

velocity velo city CLASS: STUDIO VII - URBAN

PROJECT TYPE: URBAN MIXED-USE DATE: FALL 2018

SUPERVISOR: ABDELLATIF QAMHAIEH

Velocity is a large-scale mixed-use urban project located in Jaddaf, Dubai. The site is 900,000 km2, and the area itself stands as a shipping repair zone. A library exists in the site, shaped like an open book and the challenge was to work around the existing library to create this project. As you can see in the image, I decided to design the area as a mixture of mid-rise residence and high-rise residence, which allows for the opportunity to use the lower grounds for retail space. One tower, called the serpent tower, stands out as different from the rest. The serpent tower is right by the water front and has a large plaza designed around it, where it serves as the center of the night-life for the project. Some of the features of this project include a Museum of Modern Art, a lake that extends from the creek into the residential area, two parts surrounding the library, and a docking area for private yachts.

ct. As of the dence t area o maxt. We Dhabi venues peratof the o line on an what gn.

After the group stage, I was left to design the rest of the project on my own. I decided to bring in the creek into the project, and use it to provide a water-feature for the residential towers. The water becomes the main character for the project - which is where the name “velocity” came from. The word itself provides a witty pun: “velocity” representing the fact that the creek going inside the project provides a constant movement, as well as it working well for having the word “city” in it. From the research phase, we discovered that there are plans for the metro line to be continued in the future - which is why I decided to model it.

This project started off as a group project. As a group, we put the main zones of the area. We decided to put the mid-rise residence towards the back, to gain the waterfront area for retail and for the residential towers to maximize the economic benefit for the client. We also designed the streets, using the Abu Dhabi street design tool. There are two main avenues that are paralleled to each other. We seperated the rest of the areas based on some of the pre-existing streets, as well as the metro line that was already in place. We concluded that the organic form for the streets because it is what best-fit our goal for a curvilinear design.
