Remixed to goodness No matter how great a song is, sometimes it can be improved with a good remix or mash-up. Here are just a few gems.

“Ignition (1901 Remix)” — R. Kelly vs. Phoenix For some reason, these songs complement one another incredibly well in this mash-up. Phoenix’s easygoing indie vibes are the perfect backdrop for R. Kelly’s “it’s-the-freakin’-weekend” attitude. If ever a hipster spin on an early2000s hit worked, this is it.

out more of the anger behind the lyrics.

“Still Into You (Synchonice Remix)” — Paramore

“Still Into You” is arguably this pop-punk band’s most pop-like song, but this dubstep remix gives the radio hit a complete makeover. The DJ plays with the lyrics, creating unexpected riffs, and the drop isn’t just another 2008 hum-drum “I-saw-that-coming” drop. Lyndsie

Kiebert Rawr

“Idfc (Tarro Remix)” — Blackbear This low-key artist is entering the music scene in a big way with his laidback sound and hypnotic voice. The original track is soft, highlighting the pain behind the song’s message, but this DJ mixes it with a beat that brings

“You Haunt Me (RAEKO Remix)” — Sir Sly

The song alone is already pretty haunting, but RAEKO took it to a whole new level — and not in a bad way. The depth this DJ adds to the track is phenomenal. In this case, the remix is undoubtedly better than the original.

“The Middle (WizzyFlip)” —

Sammy Adams DJ Snake’s “The Middle” is quickly scaling the Top 40 charts, and rapper Sammy Adams has given it his own touch with killer lyrics laid on top. The original song might be gaining popularity on its own, but this remix is sure to turn some heads.

“The Next Episode (San Holo Remix)” — Dr. Dre This DJ adds layers on layers of popular trap sounds without eliminating the classic Snoop tongue clicks and ’90s hip-hop attitude of the original track. This remix would be an immediate hit at any party.

“Midnight Life” — The White Panda Again, who knew indie and rap would make such an incredible team? The White Panda has taken the atrocity that is Kanye West (though he was

admittedly likable when he recorded “The Good Life”) and mashes him with M83’s genius track “Midnight City.”

“Cavalier (Samuraii Remix)” — James Vincent McMorrow This remix brings the intensity of the mix-tape down a notch, playing off of McMorrow’s consistently soft sound by adding a Kygo-like tropical chillstep vibe. By speeding the original tempo up just a tad and emphasizing McMorrow’s haunting voice, the result is peaceful — but also playful. ‘Commotion in motion’ Dancers, Drummers, Dreamers helps students explore their chosen professional fields Kevin Douglas Neighbors Rawr University of Idaho is known for its arts programs. It has nationally recognized music, theatre and dance programs. When the three decided to come together, the annual event Dancers, Drummers, Dreamers (DDD), was born. Dan Bukvich, UI music professor and one of the founders of DDD, said the performance is a showcase of undergraduate student work. Bukvich said students begin their work for this project at the beginning of the spring semester and don’t stop until they open their show in late March. This year’s performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hartung Theatre. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors and $8 for students and can be purchased through the UI Ticket Center. Bukvich said he and his colleague, Diane Walker, started DDD 25 years ago as a means of giving students a chance to participate in a production they orchestrated themselves. “We wanted to do a show that involved undergraduate choreographers and composers,” Bukvich said. “We have a lot of professionals working in the world right now because of this show.” Bukvich said he uses DDD as an opportunity to treat undergraduates like the professionals they will

Coffee compatibility

A guide to finding the right local coffee shop for you

Coffee has an unbreakable bond with college students. With rich, complex flavors and biting caffeine, it’s the lifeblood of many tired souls, weary from long nights of studying or crazed weekends of debauchery. Moscow has several great coffee shops, each unique with their own tastes, smells and atmospheres. Likewise, this wonderful campus we call our own brings together individuals of all flavors and types. The question to ask then is, which flavor are you?

Your personality: The one that is completely caught up with the Kardashians. You love drama. Maybe not drama in your own life, but you love hearing about the dramatic and insane moments that make life worth living. You indulge in the superficial — not to say you are superficial — but when faced with the stressors of school, work and a social life, you like to indulge in things that don’t Sam Balas require as much thought. You are: Starbucks.

There is nothing wrong with Starbucks, but if we are all being honest here it isn’t exactly the creme de la creme of the coffee world. Starbucks is for those who have a penchant for pop culture and gravitate toward the familiar — people who just want some delicious caramel mochas with their chocolate croissant.

Your personality: Not really the partying type.

January Blues

More down to earth, more willing to be yourself over pursuing the fleeting pleasures of life. You might consider yourself an introvert, but more in the sense that you prefer having a close conversation with one person rather than babbling to a plethora of listeners. Also, you like food.

David Black | Rawr

You are: Einstein’s Bagels. For being one of the busiest locales on campus, Einstein’s can be shockingly quiet. With delicious food and underrated coffee, Einstein’s is one of Moscow’s most surprising charms.

Your personality: Artsy, and proud of it. You indulge in the finer things in life, or whatever finer things Moscow has to offer. You constantly scoff at the terrible music tastes of your peers. Kanye West? Taylor Swift? One Direction? Not for you. You like listening to smooth jazz, or maybe some indie folk tunes, like Mumford and Sons.

You are: Bucer’s. For being probably the most hipster place in the Palouse, Bucer’s is always pleasantly busy with a myriad of folks from different walks of life. It’s as true an indicator as anything that there is always a little hipster in all of us.

Your personality: Open and confident, yet quiet and subdued. You like spending your time drinking your coffee with a good book, or perhaps a pleasant conversation over a game of chess. You like things slow and steady, without the hustle and bustle of the world.

You have exactly two hours and 21 minutes to get a 95 percent on a 400 level math test in order to finish with For more Rawr the 3.65 GPA necessary to get into the grad content, visit school of your dreams. You are: Cafe Artista.

You are: One World.

Something about this noble little coffee shop brings peace to those that enter. Instead of bustling with frantic students quickly trying to down as much caffeine as possible in hopes of acing a test, those that enter Cafe Artista prefer reading a good book while occasionally pausing to stare reflectively out the window.

For whatever reason One World has become the de facto capital of studying in Moscow. Sure, people enter a place like Bucer’s hoping to get some work done, but between the live music and constant chatter they usually just get distracted. Not at One World. When you step in there, you best be ready to get some work done. Sam Balas can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu
