If you’ve ever wanted to see a man die from working out, this is the movie for you. This third installment sacrifices subtlety for silliness and features the most over the top death scenes in the franchise’s history and that’s saying a lot coming from a series that decapitated Seann William Scott.

Goat Simulator

Every so often, something comes out that changes the face of technology. A long time ago, it was the invention of Windows that really changed home computing. After that, we saw the birth of the iPod. Now, we’ve had a real game changer in 2014 Masen that a lot of people Matthews rawr aren’t aware of. This new technological revolution is called Goat Simulator, and it can be picked up in app stores right at this moment. Goat Simulator is a sprawling RPG across vast landscapes where players can battle, explore, blow up cars and do anything else they want. All of this happens with the player taking the role of a goat. As the goat, players get to do a lot of funny, aggressive and sometimes mortifying acts. One mortifying thing the goats can do is run up to people and lick them with

their long goat tongue. As a result of this, the person users lick yells and goes into an awkward fetal position on the ground. Goats can also headbutt people which blows them in to the air, as well as a ton of other stupid acts. The entire aspect of gameplay in this regard is genius, and the quirky humor is what really makes the game worthwhile. As far as real game playing goes, Goat Simulator has a bit more to offer than the novelty value of running around as a goat terrorizing people. First of all, the map is large and has fun aspects and hidden perks to it. One example of this is a waterslide players can run and slide down, which catapults their goat through the air into a brick wall. A gas station can also be run around in which leads to everything inside inevitably being destroyed. Other than that, players

can complete achievements that help give the game actual goals. Once some are completed, new skins are unlocked that all have unique quirks. This all helps to make the game have a sense of direction, which means it won’t burn out after a few plays. Goat Simulator is almost perfect, but it has a few flaws. Graphical glitches are one of the biggest downfalls of the game, and it’s not uncommon to see the goat’s head going through someone’s stomach by standing too close to them. The camera can also be buggy at times, which takes a fair amount of getting used to. None of this should be a real surprise because Goat Simulator uses next gen mobile gaming engines, which might not be quite ready for primetime. It’s also worth considering that the game is still fairly new, so updates should take care of those glitches in the future. Goat Simulator is stupid,

there’s no denying that. It also costs $4.99, and that money could probably buy a burrito and satisfy for longer. Regardless, it’s a fun game and worth the money to have it lying around. Fans of quirky humor and funny, simplistic

hear a tiny voice in the back of my head: “I have a bad feeling about this.” Unfortunately, that little voice is always there and I have gotten pretty good at ignoring it. As I picked up speed down the hill I immediately regretted my decisions. I felt like I had been chained, naked, in a wind tunnel that someone had somehow installed inside a walk-in freezer. My toes froze immediately into tiny blue nubs of ice, liable to crack and fall off at any moment. The cold wind whipped tears from my eyes and I could almost hear them cracking as they flew off behind me, freezing before they hit the ground. I decided to pedal harder, hoping the exertion would warm me up. No such luck. I arrived at class gasping for breath with a core temperature somewhere just below absolute zero. There is more to a theater production than the memorized lines and choreographed scenes. It takes a team of people behind the scenes to put together a production. Designers, stage managers and assistants all play key roles in putting a production together. Samantha Opdahl is a costume designer at the University of Idaho. Opdahl designed the costumes for “A Bright New Boise,” a play by Moscow-raised playwright Samuel Hunter. She said it’s important to have different people specializing on certain aspects of the show so more attention can be spent on each project. “There are directors that can do it all,” Opdahl said. “But sometimes it’s good to have someone to give full attention to the task and execute it as best as it can be.” Since the production is a modern show, Opdahl said she purchased most of the costume pieces from Old Navy, Ross and Goodwill and altered the articles as needed. She said her favorite article of clothing was a particular shirt, worn by Leroy in the show. Leroy is an edgy artist who makes controversial art and sometimes wears obscene shirts to shock people. Opdahl and Jonathan Rau, the cast member that plays Leroy, got creative while making and designing the provocative shirt. “The shirt says, ‘You will eat your children,’” Opdahl said. “There are baby faces on the back of the shirt.” The clothing Leroy wears

in the show portray his artistic rebellious nature — a key part of the show. Opdahl said she and her assistant, UI student Anita Packwood, spent a lot of time developing costumes to portray how the characters are supposed to be. Jared Klingele, from UI, is the scenic designer for “A Bright New Boise.” He said one of the most challenging projects for the set was making the walls. They are a brick texture that gradually fades to black so the walls appear to merge into the black background. Klingele said scenic design is important because it creates the world the actors live in. “Without the scenic designers, we’d have actors in beautiful costumes in beautiful lights but everything else would be left to the imagination of the audience,” Klingele said. “It helps to have physical objects.” He said designing a set is rewarding because so much time is spent watching it slowly come together. “Seeing the finished product is amazing,” Klingele said. “During the design process, you can’t wait to see what it will look like full to scale.” Klingele said it’s good to have different people all doing specific tasks because projects become more interesting with multiple views. With more people designing different aspects of the show, the process is more in-depth. “You get more views this way,” he said. “There are more people to collaborate with and bounce ideas off of.” Alexia Neal can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

Shark Bites The next big thing is hard to find. That’s why the hit show “Shark Tank” exists. The show puts entrepreneurs with the next great business in front of five millionaire and billionaire investors with the chance to skyrocket popularity and sales. Some ideas have been terrible — like a coffee shop that serves divorce papers — but others have taken off like crazy. Here’s a list of some of the coolest ideas.

Rapid Ramen Cooker This should be on every college student’s list. This microwave safe bowl allows you to save time cooking ramen noodles by swapping out the stovetop for a quick blast in the microwave. This got a $150,000 deal in the Tank and sells online, so check it out if you want to make college life easier. Which I assume you do.

Copa di Vino Arguably the biggest missed opportunity in the Tank, this innovative wine-by-the-glass business was featured on the show twice. The Sharks didn’t bite either time, but the company has made over $25 million in sales to date. Bet they wish they’d jumped on the wagon.

Origaudio This cool company is currently valued at $4 million and for good reason. They’ve developed awesome portable music speakers that turn anything into a speaker. Though their deal fell through, they’re still successful, showing that the right exposure and the cool product speak for itself.

Cycloramic Given that there’s always an app for that, it’s hard to come up with something new. Enter Cycloramic, which makes your iPhone spin itself around and take a panoramic photo. Now that’s innovation.

Notehall Yet another essential for college students, Notehall.com lets you buy and sell your class notes online to make a quick buck and get caught up in style. The company was recently bought, making the site founders millionaires.

Scrub Daddy A scrub brush with a smiley face built in, this fun way to get clean is hands down the biggest Shark Tank success story. The company has made over $16 million in sales and sold out on QVC in six minutes one day after it appeared on the show. It continues to sell out to this day.

De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steak If you’re one of those people who hate ribs because they’re too messy, this is the product for you. This patented technology removes the bones from ribs and allows them to be heated up via microwave. Saves time, hassle and mess all in one. Bradley Burgess can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

Voyage Air Guitar A guitar that folds in half was such a cool idea that the Sharks got a second shot at it. “Mr. Wonderful” Kevin O’Leary, despite not biting at first, eventually struck up a deal with this father and son business and nowadays, the company has strong supporters, including Brad Paisley.

Battle memories Spanish-American War Memorial, not all it seems Claire Whitley Rawr

*Information gathered from the University of Idaho Library’s Special Collections. He stands day after day, year after year, guarding the Administration Building. He never sleeps, never speaks and never budges from his place. This resolute soldier is a tribute to the ordinary soldier who fought and died in the Spanish-American War.

UI and the war The University of Idaho has a strong military history and a significant tie to the Spanish-American War. In May 1898, 39 of the 248 students enrolled at the university volunteered for the war. UI had the largest proportion of volunteers to students out of all colleges and universities in the U.S., said Ben Bridges, a history undergraduate who recently wrote about the old guard. Of the 39 students, only two died in the war. Ole Gabriel Hagberg enrolled in UI’s Military Science program in 1895. He was a Norwegian immigrant who came to the U.S. to live the American Dream, and when the opportunity arose, he readily volunteered to serve his adopted country. He died in the Philippines of typhoid fever in 1898. Paul Draper came to UI from Iowa in 1893 and was in the Military Science program, as well as served in UI’s Company D,

1898 Ole Gabriel Hagberg dies in the Philippines of typhoid fever

which Hagberg was also enlisted in. Draper was originally posted with the 16th Infantry Regiment in Cuba. He took part in the Battle of San Juan Hill, which was led by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Afterwards, Draper and his unit were sent to the Philippines where Draper drowned trying to save his fellows after their raft capsized in a river in 1900.

The statue and a whispered rumor of inaccuracy There is some debate on the model of the Idaho Volunteer. Some say the original artist looked at photos of Hagberg and crafted the statue after him, others say the statue is modeled after a young man named Clem Herbert in the early 1900s. The statue, whomever it was modeled after, was erected on campus in 1901 and dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the war. Some people believe the monument is what is known as a “Hiker monument,” which were sculptures created for the common everyday soldier, rather than cadets dressed in their parade uniforms. Hiker monuments were originally made for soldiers of the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion and the Philippine-American War. During the early 1970s, protestors of the Vietnam War vandalized the statue. His hands and his gun were smashed off and his hat was just a fraction of what it originally was. In 1984, Lewiston sculptor Bud Washburn removed and restored the statue. It was rechristened at a ceremony in 1985. For the last 113 years the “Silent Guard” stood at his post even without hands or the proper weapon. Claire Whitley can be reached at arg-ars@uidaho.edu

Gamers from the University of Idaho flocked to the fourth floor of the Idaho Commons building for a night of all-night gaming. The ASUI sponsored event was competitive and featured prizes including an Xbox One. The whole event occurred throughout the night, starting at 6 p.m. and going all the way until the wee morning hour of 4 a.m. Many gamers stuck around all the way until the end, which resulted in a large turnout. Attendees had access to consoles and the ability to bring their own devices as well for the Oct. 3 event.

The entire event was partitioned into different spaces, with rooms dedicated to the first-person shooter Halo 4, online role-playing game “League of Legends” and more. The brand new Nintendo 3DS/Wii U continuation of the game “Super Smash Bros” was a big hit, with plenty of people bringing their devices to engage in multiplayer battles. Featured titles extended outside of video games into the realm of popular card and board games like “Magic, the Gathering” and “Settlers of Catan” as well. On top of games, the event featured live DJ’s and free pizza to go around. Three rooms were filled with different gaming equipment. One had tables for the League of

Legends tournament, another had massive TVs all linked together for multiplayer Halo, and another had older TVs hooked up to Nintendo Gamecubes for players to indulge in Super Smash Bros: Melee. “Vandal Overnight Games was awesome,” said Michael Lowe, a UI sophomore. “There was tons of people, pizza, games, and friends there. Definitely one of the best events I have ever been to on campus.” With an attitude like that, attendees can hope ASUI will throw another similar event in the future, but nothing has been confirmed since the dust is still settling. “There were three massive rooms that were all open and

The key to eating well with an unbalanced cupboard is creativity and an

adventurous spirit. The suggestions that follow are not for the faint of heart, but if followed without trepidation, they can pay off exponentially. One common problem students face is they are too rushed to make anything for breakfast, so they eat cereal and feel hungry for the rest of the day. Don’t worry about cooking an elaborate meal and instead just add some protein. Throw a scoop of peanut butter in with your cereal and prepare to have your life change forever. Along with adding some much needed protein to this important meal, peanut butter also can vastly improve the taste and texture of your average cereal. Try it with cheerios, raisin bran, granola or anything with chocolate, but don’t blame me if it

ruins your fruit loops. Another kitchen quandary I often encounter is the mysterious case of the left over salsa. There is always salsa left after the bag of chips is gone. Fear not, I have a solution. If you have any kind of crackers or saltines, just use them instead of chips. Yes, it might not be very authentic but saltines and salsa is a pretty killer combo. Another opportunity for culinary creativity is the majestic Cup of Noodles. Don’t settle for going with the herd, and go beyond the bland instructions printed on the cup. Experiment with ingredients. Try chopping up a hot dog and throwing it in to add some protein, crack an egg into the cup before you cook it for even more nutritional

benefits or cut up some jerky and drop it in. The possibilities are endless. Just don’t ever sacrifice bacon to the Cup of Noodles gods, that’s a waste of bacon. When life gives you mismatched condiments, make a meal out of it. Who says creativity is just for artists? Express yourself through your food. Let it be an extension of your resourcefulness. Of course, like all good things, even this can go too far. If you ever catch yourself making ketchup and saltine sandwiches, just because it’s what you can get for free in from the cafeteria, you might want to re-evaluate your priorities. Previously ... Whitney’s mother opened the door. She gave him a warm smile and said “hello, Cammy.” He smiled politely and a faint “hi” was pulled out by his breath. Cammy took his shoes off and picked the remaining thorns out of his socks before stepping on the blue carpet in Whitney’s home. He loved the way the house smelled. It was always clean and warm. Cammy’s house smelled like a house. Whitney’s house smelled like a home. (Continued) Whitney’s mother curled up in the couch again and pointed to the light in the foyer, to where Whitney was tinkering with the carburetor at the table. Cammy stepped quietly through the foyer and passed the stairs. Whitney didn’t acknowledge him so he tapped the wall slightly to get his attention. Whitney looked up. He had known Cammy was there. He had already guessed he wouldn’t make it home when they left the bridge at the canal that they had been jumping off all day. “I told you to just ride back with us. We had room in the truck bed.” “I know, but I didn’t…” Cammy’s voice dropped to a mumble as he looked at the metal parts on the table. He wondered for a moment what they were and thought of asking. He smelled gasoline. His gaze fell to the lightly speckled tiled floor beneath the table and he didn’t finish his sentence. Whitney didn’t stop cleaning the carburetor, but he wondered what Cammy was thinking about. He wondered why he looked so concerned. Whitney shouted to his parents asking if they could give Cammy a ride to his house. Whitney’s mother said it wouldn’t be a problem and nudged his father on the shoulder. Whitney’s father

cleared his throat with a grunt and told the boys to give him a few minutes and Cammy didn’t speak up until Whitney’s father started for the stairs. “No, it’s fine, I can walk my bike home. I just wanted to see if Whitney had any extra tubes so I could ride home.” Cammy’s father was likely home by now. His father wouldn’t have liked that he bothered someone about his own troubles and let Whitney’s father give him a ride. “How bad are your tires?” asked Whitney and told Cammy to meet him in the barn with his bike. A single light bulb swung gently from a chain as the breeze snuck through the space between warped panels of wood in the barn. Whitney hung the front of the bike’s seat over a metal bar. The bike was suspended in air. He told Cammy to hold the bike in place. Whitney explained what he was doing as he worked on the bike. Cammy was distracted by the dust swirling in the wind in front of the shed and by the howling and the creaking the barn made when the wind accelerated. He nodded whenever Whitney looked at him. Whitney wasn’t sure if Cammy knew what he was talking about, or if he was even listening, but there was sincerity in Cammy’s eyes and in his voice and whether he was paying attention or not didn’t seem to matter. Whitney tightened the tension of the bike chain. He adjusted the break and shifting cables. Then he replaced the tubes and told Cammy to stay out of thorns. Cammy smiled and took his bike off the stand. The night’s summer breeze chilled the perspiration that formed on Cammy’s skin and he pedaled faster on Cemetery Road to his house. Maybe there was a chance his father wasn’t home yet. He heard the rush of an incoming car and got off his bike. He stood in the brush

and kept his bike on the road to save his tires from thorns. The red taillights disappeared as the car dropped below the hill in front of him. He pedaled hard up the hill. His house was on the other side. He hoped no cars would pass when started his descent. He stopped at the top of the hill and looked for any approaching cars. He was clear. He pedaled as fast as his legs allowed him. He reached a point where his bike was going too fast for him to pedal. He cruised down the hill, shifting his weight side to side, carving, feeling the tires slip on the smooth pavement. He slid his bike sideways in he dirt and the gravel. He knew there weren’t any thorns there. That was his area. He loved that moment. He didn’t have to use his breaks anymore he had practiced that skid so much since he’d been there. His balance was perfect.

He kept his weight on the seat and leaned hard. He listened to the pebbles and dirt grind under his tires. He thought of a hockey player on a break away. Stopping abruptly in front of the goal tender and pirouetting around the puck with his stick to finish the goal. He felt his rear tire regain traction. He straightened his front tire and let the momentum straighten the rest of the bike and he rolled onto his driveway with only a slight sniffle and crickets chirping form the farm across from his house. His eyes were wet and his black curly hair nearly stood straight up at the top. He wasn’t quite smiling, but his face relaxed and the rush left him tranquil. Cammy’s focus on his skid made him forget to look for his father’s truck in the driveway. He saw the dent in the driver’s side door of the truck in the moonlight. He

could see the chipped dark blue shade of the box shaped truck. Which looked speckled black in the dark. He didn’t like the dent. He remembered his parents fighting over it about money his father got that was supposed to be used to fix the door and the paint of the truck. Cammy’s father was home. He hoped he was asleep and then Cammy could leave early in the morning without his father knowing. The garage was open so Cammy walked his bike in and set it in a corner out of the way. He didn’t close the garage. He turned the light off so no one could see inside. He opened the door quietly, hoping his father is in bed, or asleep on his recliner in front of the television. He closed the door without making any sound. The door clicks when he locks it. His dad’s voice roars from the living room.
