“Bicycle Race” by Queen Good for those days when you don’t want to worry about anything weighty, and just ride your bicycle.

daphne jackson

“I’m Gonna Be” (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers This is a quintessential road trip song. It’s catchy, has a good tempo and is good for a singalong. It’s also a good one to bring back around to the front of the list after a while.

“Come Sail Away” by Styx

With a smooth and pleasant melody, this song gives off the same feeling as sailing on a steady breeze.

“Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles This song is a perfect way

to let go and get a little crazy. Bonus points for breaking out your dance moves.

“Separate Ways” by Journey This song is about a breakup and the different directions lives can take. Despite the bittersweet tone of the song, the driving beat and high energy make it cathartic to sing.

“Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles In the town where I was born, there was no man who sailed the seas. This song is a classic, and fun for any trip,

whether on land or under the sea.

“Another Town, Another Train” by Abba This is a sad song about someone who’s left a relationship in the middle of the night.

It’s not a very cheerful song, but it has a nice harmony and a sweetly wistful, ‘could-havebeen’ feeling. Daphne Jackson can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

RAWR REVIEWS

Album review: Kimbra – “The Golden Echo” masen matthews rawr Pop is a genre that has evolved heavily in the past few years. What used to be a genre almost entirely dominated by auto-tuned, lackluster artists like Ke$ha and Miley Cyrus has evolved into a scene with frontrunners like Purity Ring, Lorde and Ellie Goulding. What’s the difference between then and now? There is a departure from the generic, “party music,” into the realm of layered and electro-laced

ambition that rings throughout recent pop albums, like Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” and FKA Twigs’ “LP1”. Kimbra’s new album, “The Golden Echo” is a welcome contribution to the list of quality pop albums that have emerged in the past few years. Clocking in at exactly an hour long, “The Golden Echo” is stacked with quality tracks from beginning to the end. Chia chia bang bang From little plant animals, to super food claire whitley crumbs Is it a new food fad, or an ancient Aztec super food? Either way, chia seeds aren’t just used to make plant pets anymore. Chia seeds are a member of the mint family that are said to originate in diets from the Aztecs. More people now know them from the “Chia Pets,” which grew grass-like fur. Emerging research has shown that as part of a healthy diet, chia seeds may improve cardiovascular risk factors. There have even been claims that chia seeds aid in weight loss, by promoting the idea of fullness. Research studies currently contradict this claim. University of Idaho dietician Marissa Rudley said just two tablespoons of those grass-fur pet seeds are packed with good nutrients. “Chia seeds have high concentrations of carbohy-

drates, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein and calcium,” Rudley said. According to Rudley, chia seeds provide a complete source of protein, which is often hard for plants to do. Chia seeds also contain other beneficial minerals such as iron, magnesium and zinc, and can be added to many recipes, or eaten raw. “A drink that is popular in Mexico and gaining popularity in the U.S. is chia fresco, which is made by soaking chia seeds in fruit juice or water,” Rudley said. Rudley mentioned that chia seeds can be very expensive, however, and are about $12 per pound at the Moscow Co-op. She suggested that anyone who wants the same benefits for a fraction of the price should purchase flaxseed instead. Food and nutrition instructor Katie Miner said that combining chia seeds with water can create a

gel to replace eggs in many recipes, much like flaxseed. This is useful for anyone following a vegan diet or anyone with egg allergies. “Chia seeds can also substitute for fat in recipes when mixed with water and for pectin when making jam,” Miner said. Miner also suggested adding chia seeds to many recipes such as smoothies, breads, salad, cereal and yogurt, adding crunch and texture with mild flavor. Both Rudley and Miner said that not enough research has been conducted to confirm or deny the benefits of eating chia seeds. However, both still say they are a good addition to any diet. “They are a fun and versatile ingredient, providing several nutrients that can be incorporated into a healthy diet,” Miner said. through Pinterest, I came across something that looked absolutely delicious: spaghetti carbonara. I could have pasta, bacon and a light version of spaghetti. I was so happy that I wanted to share the recipe with everyone.

Spaghetti Carbonara Serves: 6 Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

1 lb. spaghetti 1/2 large onion, diced (about 1 cup) 1/2 lb. bacon (regular or turkey bacon), diced 5 eggs 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup parmesan (or more) 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper Olive oil

Directions: 1. 2.

3.

Bring a big pot of salted water to a boil on the stove. While waiting for the water to boil, cook bacon in a large skillet over medium-heat, stirring every few minutes, until nearly crispy. Add the diced onion to the skillet, and continue cooking until the bacon is crispy and

the onion is translucent. 4. In a separate, small bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, parmesan and black pepper until well-blended. Set aside. 5. Once the pasta water is ready, add the spaghetti and cook until it is al dente. 6. Drain out the pasta water, and return the pasta to the hot pot immediately. 7. Stir the pasta with one hand and pour the egg mixture into the pasta and continue to toss until the egg mixture is cooked into the pasta. (You may see a few tiny clumps, but in general, the eggs will just coat the individual pieces almost like a sauce.) 8. Add in the bacon and onion mixture and toss until mixed. 9. Serve immediately. Behind the throne claire whitley rawr Many historical fantasies have some basis in reality, and “Game of Thrones” is no exception. Based on George R.R. Martin’s book series, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the HBO television series is set in medieval times. Many of the events that took place in the series also took place in real life, and characters can be traced to actual historical figures. Associate professor of medieval European history Ellen Kittell helped compare some of the major happenings in “Game of Thrones” to historical events.

The Wall One of the simpler comparisons of the series is the Wall. The hundredfoot or taller wall of ice that separates Westeros from the uncharted other is based upon Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall was built by the Roman Empire in the northern part of England, in order to keep out the Picts, or barbarians of the time. This is similar to the Wall keeping out wildlings and white walkers.

The North versus the South Kittell suggests that Martin used Scotland as the basis for the Northerners and the Southerners. Throughout history in Scotland there have been many feuds between the Highlanders and the Lowlanders. “Lowland Scotland was more civilized and had a higher standard of living, while the northerners wanted to be left alone but would periodically raid for plunder,” Kittell said.

The Starks and Lannisters These two iconic families of the series are based mostly on the Houses of York and Lancaster of England, the red rose and the white rose. Kittell said the problem between the Yorks and the Lancasters was based on a genealogical problem. Richard II, son of Edward III, became king and confiscated all of the Lancaster estates. Henry IV comes back from his fighting in France during the Hundred Years War and deposes Richard, and puts the English throne into the hands of a Lancastrian, Kittell said. The other powerful family in the country, however, was York, who had the same relationship to Edward III as Henry did. They wanted to claim their proper land rights. York eventually performs a coup and gains power, which ends with the two families combining to become the Tudors.

Daenerys Targaryen This strong willed, independent young woman is rumored to be based on Henry VII. Henry VII, or Henry Tudor, was the child of the Lancasters, who came while the two families were warring with each other and took the throne. He eventually married one of the Yorks and combined the two families. Kittell adds to this theory by suggesting that Daenerys actually represents more of the Tudor house. Another thing that Daenerys’ character does is distinguish the English from the French, because in France a woman would never have that kind of power. “That’s not that bad (of a compari-

son),” Kittell said. “I think what they have done is collapsed Elizabeth Tudor and Henry into one.”

The Red Wedding Kittell said that any event such as the red wedding would have been stupid for lords to commit. A prime example is the beheading of Ned Stark, which caused the North to go to war against the South. If a leader, king, lord or other high standing person were to kill a member of a family, it would alienate their kin, Kittell said. Besides, the best way to win a war is to kill the workers and peasants, because then the lords would have nothing to fight with. That being said, several events could have influenced this gut-jarring and shocking episode. One such historical event was the Glencoe Massacre, a family feud which took place in the late 1600s between the MacDonalds and the Campbells of Scotland, Kittell said. “At the Glencoe Massacre, the MacDonald clan was betrayed by the Campbells, who were likely in cahoots with the king,” Kittell said. “And to this day the MacDonalds and the Campbells do not like each other.” The Campbells tricked the MacDonalds into allowing them into their estates in Glencoe, and killed 38 men either in their homes or as they tried to flee in one night, Kittell said. The first to be killed was the clan leader, who was murdered while trying to rise from his bed. An additional 40 women and children were killed due to exposure as their homes were burnt to the ground. Claire Whitley can be reached at argarts@uidaho.edu

The storyline is both heartbreaking and addictively entertaining at the same time. There is a general brutality in the show that offers a Stark difference — get it — to drama shows today. The shocking murder of several main characters anchors the show in a reality not often seen in other fiction dramas. George R.R. Martin’s writing does not hold back and can pistol-whip the audience in one scene. The character development is calculated and powerful. Watching Arya

Stark transform from a scared little girl to hardened sword fighter — who can nonchalantly impale a man with no regrets — gets the point across. The series so far has been great, but it is only the beginning to the larger battle. As some fans have pointed out, Game of Thrones is similar to Harry Potter. The first few seasons are introducing the audience to world of Westeros and the powers at play. Just like the first few installments of Harry Potter introduced the audience to Hogwarts and the various professors in the school, with Voldemort as a distant background. The same is with Game of Thrones — the real battle has yet to begin. Ryan Tarinelli can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

New theater space

9.05.14 The Gift of Gab to be performed for the Forge Theater grand opening

alexia neal rawr

The University of Idaho is welcoming a new theater space to its campus. The grand opening of the Forge Theater will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, and will consist of two, one-act plays by student directors, Christina Holaday and Nathaniel Quinn. Quinn, a third-year Master of Fine Arts director at UI, is the director of “Come on Over.” Quinn said the biggest challenge he faced as the director was to get the audience to connect with the characters, Margaret and Matthew. The two characters go through the course of the show with bags over their heads. All of their expressions have to be shown through their voices. “It is engrained in us to read a face while having a conversation,” Quinn said. “It helps tell the story. But we don’t get to see that in this play.” Quinn said the play is about recognizing your humanity and when to forgive yourself. “Matthew comes to understand that he himself, his guilt, has stopped him more than anything,” Quinn said. “He finds redemption within himself by the end of the play.” The priest, Matthew, approaches religion scientifically and logically, Quinn said. The play is written with a lot of monologues, so each character sits and tells the story in long chunks, rather than in conversation. Holaday, a first-year MFA director, is the director of “Love Improvisations,” one of two plays to be shown on opening night. “Love Improvisations” was written by MFA candidate Stephen Robert King. The play is about two characters, a brother and sister, who tell the story about their two friends who suddenly disappeared. “The play is set inside the

danlin li | rawr

Chicken Shack, a mom and pop-style restaurant,” Holaday said. “People go there to eat and see live bands.” The brother and sister were concerned that the people of their small town thought they were involved with the disappearance, so the play consists of them setting their town straight. “It gets a little dark and heavy,” Holaday said. “But there’s definitely some comedic relief too.” Quinn said the new theater was built this past summer as

a sort of temporary location for smaller productions. The Kiva Theater, located across from the Physical Education Building, is being demolished and renovated. In a small theater like the Forge, it is easier for the audience to relate to the play. The imaginary wall, known as the “fourth wall” between the audience and the stage is seemingly nonexistent, leading to a much deeper connection during the show. Holaday said the Forge The-

ater, despite its smaller size, is diverse. For the grand opening, the theater will be set in the style of a “black box” theater, but it can easily be converted into a “play in the round,” a “deep thrust” or an “alley.” The theater can seat 100 people. “With the Forge Theater, you can tell a whole different kind of story,” Holaday said. “I like it because it is a more intimate space.” Alexia Neal can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

The Search for Paradise — Part 3 melody pond rawr Previously... Sean watched the man’s face, and saw how it was distant, staring off into the past. He suddenly felt sorry for him, but had no idea why. (Continued) “I was going to propose to her here. I had it all planned out. We would be walking along the beach, and suddenly, there in the sand, would be a bottle. Inside would be a note, tied closed with a ribbon. The small diamond ring I had bought with the remainder of my savings tied to the ribbon tails. She would have opened it, her soft smile on her lips, and tears in her eyes. The note, on thick parchment paper, would have said: ‘Heather. My heart. My soul. My love. Will you marry me?’ Yup, that’s what it would’ve said.” “What do you mean ‘would’ve’?” Alice asked, face full of a quiet sadness Sean could not comprehend. The man turned his dark eyes to her, an expression of regret on his face. “I grew suspicious of her. She was out of her room a lot, without me. I followed her once, and saw her talking to one of the local men, his bronze face beaming at her. In my hazy eyes, I thought she was cheating on me. I was furious. We fought, the very night I was planning on taking her for a walk on the beach. We went to our separate rooms. The next morning, she was gone.” Sean frowned. He turned his mind internally, wondering what his suspicious personality would have done in that case. Alice leaned forward, on the edge of her seat. “What?! Where did she go?” A look of amusement passed over the man’s face, as though he were glad someone finally took an interest in his story. “It took me a while to figure it out. At first I thought she had just left on her own, too mad at me to stay. Then, I received a note from the front desk. Her father, a wealthy and powerful man, had found us. He had always been against our dating, as I was no one of significance, and by no means rich. He had dragged her away to the states. It was the last time I saw her. I vowed from that moment onward to do

two things. One: become a wealthy man Heather’s father could at least consider. Two: Never leave this place. The place where we had found our own paradise.” Sean smiled to himself. Such silly vows. He should have vowed to go after her, instead of waiting. The thought surprised him. “Did you become wealthy?” Alice inquired, the inner kindness shining out of her. Something pulled at Sean’s heart as he looked at her. “I did. I own this resort, and three others on the island, as well as three hotels. Yet, without Heather, this place

is just an island. My paradise is lost.” Alice and Sean gaped at the man. He forced a bitter smile. With a casual glance at his watch, he burst into a flurry of action. He rose, apologized for boring them with an old love story, and strode away. They watched him take up position near the entrance. He searched the faces of people coming in the door, pulling suitcases behind them, who were no doubt just arriving from the airport.
