This is our golden anniversary issue and who better to cause some mayhem at our bash than that little Manc rascal Liam Gallagher? Our latest contract came when Northern Powerhouse Developments appointed us to produce all their marketing and publishing material. As one of the north’s biggest hotel and leisure providers, NPD own and manage an impressive range of hotels across the country and we are delighted to be working with such a thriving and successful business. Our work with NPD adds to the publishing contracts we already have with Skipton Building Society and Skipton Financial Advisors, Spire Leeds Hospital, Sesame Bankhall Group and Ilkley Tennis Club. In addition we will also be producing two new titles in the coming months, beyond money - a financial magazine and a residential property magazine for a leading estate agent. LET’S GET IT ON He was the frontman of arguably the biggest band in the world, now on the back of new movie Supersonic, Liam Gallagher talks about the possibility of a reunion with his brother Noel and the obsession that surrounds an Oasis comeback.

O

ver cigarettes and alcohol on a hot London terrace, the voice of the 1990s, Liam Gallagher is as recogniosable as ever. Watching the swagger, the attitude and listening to that thick Manc accent fill the air is like rolling back the years. Liam is here to talk about a new film, Supersonic, that charts the rise of Oasis — the band he was in with his brother Noel from 1991 until implosion in 2009. Their first two albums, Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, sold 37m copies and led to two vast gigs at Knebworth in 1996, which 4% of the country tried to get tickets for. That is the largest demand ever, and, suitably, where the excellent documentary — from the Senna and Amy team — ends. The gig, though, is far from the last thing Gallagher wants to talk about. “If you put out a good interview, people get to know you more,” he says. His hair is neatly hanging around his face, and he is dressed exactly as expected: blue anorak, jeans, spotless white trainers. He is approachable, and this has always been the split in his personality. On stage, he is fearsome and still, whereas off it, like his older brother, he offers quotes as good as their choruses: the footballchant anthems that defined Blair’s Britain and ushered in a decade of lad culture. “I am never going to be on stage, talking about what I’ve been up to that day,” he says. “I can’t be doing with chat. So we’d give everything in interviews. Then everyone in the venue knows who we are. Like it or not, we were entertaining.” Yet the biggest stars now, such as Beyoncé, Radiohead, don’t even speak to the press. “Sad, isn’t it? Nobody’s got anything to say any more. They are all scaredy-cats. It’s just boring these days.” And we’re off. In the film — named after their debut single, Supersonic — as Oasis are chucked off ferries and bottled by fans looking for a reaction, Gallagher says: “Any band worth their salt is not just music.” Do you really mean that? “Without a doubt. If it’s all about music, then it’s Coldplay. The most rock’n’roll thing Chris Martin did was wear a leather jacket. I thought, ‘Go on, lad. That’s a start.’” The Sex Pistols are the band he admires, but he adds: “Even if I was selling flowers, I’d probably be arrested for whacking some c*** over the head with a bunch of geraniums.” Which does set his bar rather high. Surely, he argues, pointing at my iPhone, new bands should be filmed getting up to mischief. But, I say, that’s the issue. They are afraid, as there’s nowhere to hide. “Yeah, but if I was a 20-year-old in a band and somebody stuck that in my face, I’d stick it up their arse, or mine,” he argues, believably. “There is no excuse for young bands to act like grown men. When you’re older and have kids, cool it out a bit, but I get up to more mischief in my butcher’s than they do on their f****** tours. Maybe it’s just where we’re from,” he ponders, after a rare pause. “I guess it goes back to the working-class thing. A lot of music these days 16 | beyond Issue 50

is by middle-class kids.” Is it a lack of funds in deprived areas? Gallagher shakes his head. “I don’t know the answers. I don’t really care about politics.” This youngest Gallagher is 44 — five years the junior of his brother Noel, who turns 50 next year. The pair were both Oasis’s great strength and what drove them apart. The film shows them young and Liam good-looking, like a young River Phoenix in one family photo — shaved head, piercing blue eyes. Noel was an awkward stoner who sat with guitars. Their father was abusive, and in the early 1980s their mother, Peggy, took Liam, Noel and their elder brother, Paul, away. A decade on, their spirited band formed. Noel says Liam is cooler, funnier and prettier, but that his sibling wishes he had his talent as a songwriter every day. Is that true? “I don’t think so, man,” Liam says. “I was happy with singing. I’m a rock’n’roll singer.” But come the fourth Oasis album, he wrote as well? “I didn’t really want to.” The first time that happened, he was playing guitar when Noel said the tune should be on a record. “It wasn’t me booting walls down, saying, ‘I want to be a songwriter.’ I’d have been happy singing his, because his were better.” At times like that, Liam sounds sweet, subdued, even a little sad. He would, of course, deny that. Sagging confidence is not what he does, let alone give an inch in a standoff that has existed between him and Noel since a fight in Paris ended Oasis seven years ago. If they got drunk and made up, the comeback gigs could be Knebworth-sized “I would love us to reform,” Gallagher says unequivocally, a couple of pints in and warmed up. “Not because of money — I’m far from skint, believe you me. I love that band. That’s putting it out there. I still think we could make good records. I’d love it. There has been a big hole in my life since 2009.” Again, he stands up, towering above me. “I feel I am walking around like I’m the geezer in a band, but I’m its shadow, walking behind it. People go ‘Oasis! Oasis!’, but I am not that now. I’m just Liam now.” After the acrimony, the singer founded and fronted Beady Eye, but had little desire to go “flogging a dead horse”, so finished them. Thanks to that, along with a series of widely publicised breakups and children, Liam has stayed in the news, while he and Noel no longer talk. How does Peggy — an “angel” — feel? “Obviously she’d like us to be chatting, sit around the table at Christmas. But it’s a stupid standoff, and we should know better, as we have kids. It would be nice for me and our kid to get back together as brothers.” “But it’s good, the standoff. I’m enjoying it. I ain’t backing down. He ain’t backing down. At least people are still talking about it. They’re obsessed.” He smiles and, again, we go back to the tabloid spat. “There’s no harm in it. He says sh*t about me. I say sh*t about him. I have held the olive branch out, and there has been nothing, so there you go. Potato it is, mate.” This


refers to tweets of Liam’s that suggest Noel looks like a spud. “As much as I love our kid, he definitely did change,” Liam says. “I don’t care what anyone says. He’s not the first to have his ego rubbed, but he changed, mate. And obviously I don’t want to lose my brother. But you can sell loads of records, be loved — the main success is if you get out of it pretty much the same as you went in. You live in a different house. Drive a different car. But you don’t have to turn into a nob.” So he’s the same? “Without a doubt.” And Noel’s not? “I don’t think he is. You can see the clientele he hangs round with. He’s on the verge of turning into Sting, but I’m blind to the bullsh*t. I know I’m great. I was great before I joined the band.” When Liam is on stage, he stands still. As such, he feels like he is controlling it all: the crowd, the pace, the adulation. Also, he can’t dance. But a stillness happens when he sits, too. Often I realise he is staring at me when I really didn’t think he was — locked again in the to-camera glare of video shoots from the glory years. He is headlineworthy company, full of opinions like his brother, but without a decade spent honing them into predictability. You pick up titbits, honest appraisals of a life well lived. He isn’t grateful, more vindicated in his self-belief. He saw the Stone Roses as a teenager and that was it. He wanted to front that type of band. “I didn’t want to be in the Smiths. I could never see me with flowers out my pocket.” Next year is the big one for Gallagher, with the release of his debut solo record. “I can only say it’s sounding promising,” he says. A spoof tracklist circulated on Twitter with titles like Meat & Potatoes, Mad for It. Is that just snootiness?

“There’s disbelief, without a doubt. That spurs me on. It’s like when people body-shame someone, and two minutes later they’ve got a six-pack. I’m not a media darling, so people go, ‘He can’t write songs.’ And maybe I can’t, but what I’ve got is good. It’s a bit of everything. A few are a bit Working Class Hero, which suits my Rolls-Royce. And garage-rock psychedelia, in your face. There’s a song I like called Over — acoustic, faraway voices. Cool. I think it will put a few people in their place. “The main thing is, the voice is sounding delicious. It’s still banging it. Then there’s nice falsetto bits. Bit chilled.” I don’t think he would have been this self-deprecating a decade ago. But his pedestal wobbled with the collapse of Oasis, Beady Eye and a lot of his personal life (he divorced Nicole Appleton in 2014), and he knows he is out on his own now, for the first time — he always seemed more sure of himself than his brother, but that might not be the case any more. “It’s the best I’ve been for a bit,” he says when I say he seems calm, focused. “But it’s all my own doing. You live by the sword, you die by it, but, yeah, all that sh*t’s in the past. We move on.” He will play Oasis hits when he tours. “They belong to me as much as to [Noel]. He wrote them, but I raised them.” And hard-up fans spend £20 to see him, so he wants to give them what they want. “I’ll start with Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Definitely? “Maybe.” And with that he jumps up and bounds off. A rock’n’roll star in his head for ever, who needs a stage again.

I was shocked to see John Bishop taking on Jose Mourinho in a ‘who laughs first’ contest during C4 Stand Up To Cancer telethon. Yeah, that John Bishop and the Special One still lost. It was a result that put Man Utd’s abysmal season into some sort of perspective and for me was the highlight of a night that took seven hours and featured virtually every spin-off celebrity show ever made. The most moving bits came from the remarkably powerful testimonies from those people who had either lost family to cancer or were living with it. As for the rest, it was all pretty self-indulgent showbiz. Nothing was weirder than watching Davina McCall doing some bum-probing with commentary from resident Dr Mike who up to that point had spent the entire night trying to avoid getting his own touched up by Alan Carr. I don't know what was more entertaining: watching Davina disappearing into a black hole or Jose failing miserably to bash the bishop. Equally shameless I'd say.

SAM’LL FIX IT S

o, since we last spoke, England have lost another football manager. Big Sam Allardyce quit in disgrace after a newspaper sting caught him trying to bend the rules. It certainly came as a bit of a shock to me because I didn’t think English football had a corruption problem. I thought its only problems were racism, sexism, homophobia, gambling, match fixing, sexual assault and the inability to perform at any major tournament. Seems I was wrong. The downfall of Big Sam came when he was caught trying to explain to a couple of hacks how he could get round the law which prevents 3rd party ownership of players. Sam waxed lyrically about how he knew a little trick that meant you could own a player instead of the club owning him, a bit like you do with a race horse. However in Sam’s defence, he might have a point because if they introduced some race horsing standards into football it might actually improve the game. I’d like to see a little curtain go up around a player on the pitch if he feigns injury and then see a man in a white coat stride over with a shotgun. If that didn’t make everybody else stay on their feet and play better I don’t know what would.

Following on from the Brexit fallout, a new report claims the biggest fears the English have is that the Euro will be brought in, we’ll lose our national identity and prices will rise. But according to a Glaswegian mate of mine, the number one concern they have up in Scotland is whether Poundstretcher will shut down.

Over at the funny farm that is X Factor there was a wonderfully ironic moment when guest judge Mel B appeared and immediately barked at Cowell: “You better not be wasting my time.” Because if there is one thing that this woman’s CV is a monument to, it’s wasting time. She’s been on virtually every game show from Up Late With Rylan, Lip Sync Battle UK, Project Runway, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Chew and been a contestant on Cupcake Wars, whatever the hell that is. More recently she appeared with Bear Grylls on Running Wild which featured her clambering up and down cliffs for about eight hours before urinating on the host’s jelly fish sting. If you’re describing Mel B, then rapper, singer, actor, dancer, model, TV host are just a few of the words... you should never use. Try belligerent waste of space and shove her off as many cliffs as you like.

GORILLA WARFARE Loved the story about Kumbuka, a male silverback gorilla who sparked an armed police response after his break out bid from London Zoo last month. The 29-stone beast sent the zoo into lockdown when he made an opportunistic exit through two unlocked doors before downing five litres of undiluted blackcurrant juice. Little wonder he was eventually shot with a tranquilizer because after just one glass of diluted blackcurrant juice my nine-year-old daughter is capable of ripping the head off any soft toy put in front of her. Reminds me of the time I woke up one morning and found a gorilla on my roof. A

s far as trends go, things have certainly changed over the last decade. Commercial necessity dictates that the wheel of fashion must constantly turn, and every designer wants to be credited with bucking the trend and trailblazing the next big thing. There’s a real 1970s and 1980s vibe going on at the moment (check out the latest Tom Ford collection) with wide lapels, pleated trousers worn higher on the waist, and an altogether more ‘relaxed’ fit. That said, a slimmer silhouette is still the flavour of choice for most of my customers, and the razor sharp suits of the 60s need no introduction. Sean Connery’s (Anthony Sinclair) grey three piece in Goldfinger is probably one of the reasons why I fell in love with clothes and got into tailoring in the first place. As a tailor, of course you need to follow fashion, but what is of the upmost importance is a true understanding of proportion and balance when trying to flatter a man’s figure. It’s all very well wearing trousers like leggings, if you’re a leafy youngster with heroin chic thighs and calves, but that’s not the case if you’re built like a prop forward with legs like filing cabinets.

Another key trend is the move towards a more informal approach to tailoring. Whilst the suit is far from dead, ‘separates,’ such as casual jackets and blazers, worn with trousers, jeans, or chinos are all the rage, often combined with knitwear and worn with trainers instead of shoes. Off the back of this shift, we launched a made-to-measure line bearing all the hallmarks of Neapolitan tailoring. Much softer and more relaxed than our British bespoke line, it has an unstructured shoulder, can be made with no canvas or interlining under the cloth, is unlined, and features ‘kissing buttons’ on the cuffs. We’re also dealing with new Italian cloth suppliers like Loro Piana who are producing more technical, knitted open weaves, which work well alongside the ‘less is more’ approach. As a business, we’re open to change and have a great foundation upon which to build something fabulous. Future success will be based, not on being a slave to fashion, but taking a “kaizen” approach to our products, providing outstanding service, and most importantly finding brilliant people to help our business grow.

Photography has been transformed since Annings Camera Shop first opened its doors in Ilkley in 1960. But the independent store has kept up with the times and has just completed a major refurb to create a modern new look for its wide-range of stock, which ranges from the traditional to state-of-the-art digital. CURLS WORLD Wavy hair was a standout beauty trend at the A/W16 shows and, when executed correctly, is one of my all-time favourite styles. Giambatista Valli’s mermaid waves were my absolute favourite; they were so feminine and magical, but the loose waves at Balmain were just as gorgeous. Retro waves dominated the catwalk at Marni and Marc Jacobs; Forties wartime waves were revived at Marni, while

at Marc Jacobs, Twenties’ style finger waves were worn set and sculptured. This look isn’t restricted to the lengths of the hair – at Stella McCartney models sported wavy side fringes. MAKE IT A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS Last winter, grey hair was the unexpected colour trend, and this year, it’s different variations of white. I loved the colour seen at Sibling’s A/W16 show: it was a soft, apricot-tinged white that looked super ethereal and really pretty – much like the image Jenny Pelter created here for our Ethereal collection. At Felder and Felder and Saint Laurent, the look was slightly more mainstream, albeit more high-maintenance. Think all-over Barbie-esque platinum blonde. f you love the finer things in life, crave perfection and like to travel in style, then a cruise aboard super luxury ship Europa 2 could be your ultimate dream holiday. This exceptional ship, the jewel in the crown of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ luxury fleet, boasts more space per passenger than any other cruise ship. Its cutting-edge contemporary styling, superb gastronomy, faultless service and seamless cruising earned it the prestigious Berlitz Cruise Guide’s highest 5 Star Plus Award, for the third time in 2016. Let me take you on board and share my recent journey with you. From the moment we boarded we knew this was a cruise ship like no other. Crew with trays of champagne and canapés welcomed us warmly, and as we joined the other passengers waiting to be checked in, we felt like guests attending an exclusive cocktail party, setting the tone for the voyage ahead. The first thing that struck us, as we were shown to our Ocean suite (no cabins on this ship!) was the exceptionally spacious corridors, beautifully styled with gentle tones of contemporary décor, a theme that flows throughout. With another glass of champagne in hand, (it would have been rude not to open the perfectly chilled bottle waiting for us!), we began to check out our suite. Generous and well designed wardrobe space, even for my extensive collection of accessories, plenty of techy stuff; Nespresso machine; walk-in shower; twin basins; whirlpool bath with glass window for ocean views, a separate loo, (when do you ever get that in a cabin?) individual air conditioning that utilises fresh sea air – so no ‘air sharing’ with other passengers! Out on our generous private veranda the cream cushioned sun beds were already set up and waiting – we wondered if we would ever want to leave our suite. It brought to mind a certain advertising slogan - this is no ordinary suite – this is Europa 2 – setting new dimensions in cruise standards. So what tempted us out of our private sanctuary? Well, this is a cruise you can really design to suit your own holiday

requirements. If de-stressing and relaxation is your priority then the ship’s spa provides a luxurious oasis with infinite ocean views. The state-of-the-art gym offers tailored fitness programmes with personal trainers. Golfing enthusiasts are catered for with simulators, experienced PGA instructors. The pool deck is the ultimate chill-out zone, stunningly contemporary with pristine teak decking, huge white parasols, cream and turquoise cushioned daybeds and wellspaced sunbeds. On the upper deck, there are deliciously comfy Balinese sunbeds and an elevated Jacuzzi. If you want your own space there is plenty of it. I love cruising – and for me that means sailing seamlessly through panoramic watery horizons with huge skies – I don’t want endless announcements about quizzes, competitions and dance classes which gives me cruise guilt. No such activities on this ship - the philosophy on board Europa 2 is all about your personal freedom, unconstrained and individual – such a relief. Passengers can participate in various events, such as wine tasting with the sommelier and culinary classes in the Miele Cookery School, with the ships’ executive chefs. One of the ship’s distinctive features is the outstanding art collections. Europa 2 boasts more than 890 original paintings and exhibits, with works by famous artists including Damien Hirst and Catania Gerhard Richter. Great food is an essential part of cruise life and this ship delivers it in gourmet style. With seven restaurants on board, serving everything from sushi to French fine dining there is a diverse choice of cuisine. Weltmeere, serves daily changing menus of international dishes; The Yacht Club is the casual restaurant, where you can dine inside or alfresco on deck; Sakura, offers innovative sushi creations from the master chef; Elements serves Indian, Vietnamese and traditional Chinese dishes; Serenissima offers delicious Italian food, and Tarragon is an award winning French restaurant where you can experience exquisite fine dining. throughout the day – freshly made waffles with a choice of toppings and ice cream, (served in the afternoon) are an irresistible treat! The crew (ratio 370 for just 500 guests) are delightful, and service on board is outstanding. After-dinner entertainment is relaxed and informal. Sansibar is the gathering place in the evening, with tables out on deck, giving it a beach bar vibe. It serves dazzlingly colourful cocktails and the DJ plays chill out and dance music into the early hours. The jazz club has live music every evening, and there is an eclectic variety of entertainment on offer in the auditorium. No formal nights either, though there was a memorable pool party. An Abbatype group, a wild violinist, endless champagne cocktails, great party food, and dancing for those who felt the urge – all beneath a starry ocean sky – perfect! There is no formal dress code on board and guests tend to be elegantly casual, (think Ralph Lauren and Armani with a splash of M&S Autograph collection). Young families are very well catered for with extensive childcare facilities and family suites – though you are hardly aware of children on board as they have their own play areas and allocated pool times. This kind of unstructured and relaxed ethos is perfect for those seeking a luxury resort with flexibility, freedom and the opportunity to discover new horizons in their own way.

Ship design

The Journey The ship’s state-of-the-art technology, along with its size, means it has the capability to reach small ports and secluded bays which are inaccessible to the bigger ships. Our seven day Mediterranean island cruise embarking in Athens, took us first to the stunningly picturesque Greek Island of Santorini. I adore this island with its exquisite blue and white domed houses and Cycladic churches, dramatically perched on high plateaus, overlooking the spectacular caldera. Oia is where chic boutique hotels, restaurants and bars curl in tiers around the cliffs, perfectly placed to capture vivid sunsets. Irresistibly photographic. Our next destination was Zakynthos (Zante), now known as the party island, which is rather a shame, as it is surrounded by the beautiful clear blue waters of the Ionian Sea and has much to offer. Idyllic beachy coves, secreted around the islands’ coastline, accessible only by boat, offer swimmers and divers the chance to see the island’s rare Loggerhead turtles, now an endangered species. Sailing on to Sicily, we docked in Catania, (known as the black city), by Mount Etna. Destroyed by a volcanic eruption and an earthquake in the 17th century it was rebuilt in a Roman Baroque style using the black lava stones. Today it is a lively, bustling, edgy city. A visit to the central marketplace, with its colourful

local produce and vast fish stalls, provides a real flavour of traditional Sicilian life. There are organised excursions to the volcano, and the views from Mount Etna are staggering. On to Palermo, the capital and the most important port on the island. An intriguing and surprising city, with impressive Baroque buildings, interspersed with parks, gardens and beautiful Piazzas with fountains and ornate sculptures. The city streets are easily navigated and walking around the old town is the way to discover the city’s secrets. Stop at one of the sidewalk cafés for a cappuccino and a traditional Sicilian pastry to absorb the unique character and ambiance of this enthralling city. Our last port of call was the celebrated island of Capri. Ultra-chic and nostalgically romantic, this filmic island, popular with celebrities and the glitterati, attracts many tourists. It is idyllic, with charming atmospheric streets lined with designer boutiques and smart restaurants and bars. Boat trips are the best way to see round the island and they visit the famous ‘Blue Grotto’ – a sea cave turned brilliant blue by the sunlight passing through the cavity. Our journey ended at the port of Civitavecchia, where we disembarked. It had been an outstanding cruise on a truly stunning ship and Europa’s own brochure sums it up perfectly ‘your first experience of homesickness will come only when you leave the ship!’

GOD SAVE THE CREAM Angel cake with minted whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries Serves 8 For the cake • 125g flour • 300g caster sugar • 10 egg whites • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp cream of tartar • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 tbsp lemon juice Serves 8 • 1 tsp vanilla extract For the cake For the topping 125g flour • Large handful of mint leaves, 300g caster sugar shredded 10 egg whites • 3 tbsp caster sugar ½ tsp salt • 4 tbsp water 1 tsp cream of tartar Zest of 1 lemon • 300ml double cream 1 tbsp lemon juice • 100g strawberries, to 1 tsp vanilla extract decorate • 100g blueberries, to decorate For the topping Large handful of mint

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/375F/gas leaves, shredded mark 4. Mix 1/3 of the sugar3with tbsp caster sugar 4 tbsp water the flour, sift, then set aside.

Spoon into an angel cake tin, or an unbuttered 22cm round cake tin, 16and bake for then level the top, around 45 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Immediately turn the tin upside down on its legs, or over a wire rack, and leave to cool for 45 minutes. 5. To make the topping, put the mint, sugar and water in a pan, bring to a boil then simmer for a couple of minutes, take off the heat and allow to cool. Strain, then set aside. 6. Whip the double cream to soft peaks, then spoon in 2 tbsp of the mint syrup, or more, to taste, then whip the cream until stiff. 7. Cover the sides and the top of the cooled cake with the minted cream, then decorate with the strawberries and blueberries. Serve immediately. 54 | beyond Issue 50

To make the soured cream filling, cream the butter and vegetable shortening until light and fluffy, then gradually add the icing sugar and soured cream, alternating between the two to make sure the buttercream is thick enough. 5. To assemble, spread a layer of filling on the bottom of one biscuit, spread the jam on another then sandwich together. Repeat until all the biscuits are used. GET HOOKED AT FISK Restaurateur Stuart Williams has returned to his Yorkshire roots to open FISK, a boutique-style seafood and champagne restaurant that’s been causing waves in Harrogate’s notoriously competitive dining scene. beyond jumped in hook, line and sinker for a night of fine dining.

ince opening its doors in September, Fisk has been busy, regularly turning over tables twice, or even three times of an evening with the lunch menu also reeling in a healthy daily haul of diners. Stuart Williams runs FISK alongside his wife and Executive Chef, Kanyana and it was a colourful background of creative jobs, cookery and travelling that finally lead the couple to come full circle, returning to Stuart’s hometown of Harrogate to open their first UK venture. Located on trendy Cold Bath Road and holding less than 20 covers, the restaurant sits neatly alongside a selection of other independent eateries. Size and location were priorities for the couple’s first restaurant and Stuart explained: “We want to start off small initially to keep focused and make sure we head in the right direction. “It’s been a learning curve, but so far we’ve had excellent feedback on our menu.” Bangkok-born Kanyana’s history lies in professional private dining, bringing a wealth of exotic culinary experience to the FISK kitchen. Her Asian influence is woven into a menu that curates the best that the Far East has to offer, including flavours from Japan, Malaysia, and of course, Kanyana’s native Thailand. That’s not to say that Fisk is solely focused on Eastern promise. Cumbrae oysters can be taken Asian style, or with a decadent Pol Roger Champagne and caviar sauce while there’s also a handful of vegetarian and meat options across the menus. We chose to try the Lobster Tail Vietnamese Roll and the King Prawns, lightly battered with a sweet chilli sauce. It was instantly obvious why Fisk can command a price point that would sit above a regular dining experience. The lobster was plentiful; the prawns plump and abundant. We asked Stuart about the challenges in bringing fresh seafood to a restaurant that’s a considerable distance from the coast. He explained: “We have a twice daily delivery from our seafood suppliers, so that we can ensure that our seafood is as fresh as possible plus we minimise waste. “Our suppliers can have seafood with us that was caught on the same morning. We buy the best. We use King scallops, rather than Queens. Some of it arrives with us alive, including our lobsters to ensure our guests have the highest possible standard of seafood.” Our main course of Spicy Seafood Paella was topped with an impressive wild king prawn; the rice generously packed with squid, mussels and chorizo. The Monkfish Massaman curry was a highlight, cleverly putting this robust fish to great use. A straightforward dessert of dark chocolate mousse topped with strawberries cut through our spicy palates, working well to round the meal off. The work continues at FISK to ensure that guests can comfortably enjoy dining in considerably close quarters, but the excellent service and the unrivalled seafood that we enjoyed really had us hooked. LOOKING BACK ON EVIL Louis Theroux’s documentary on Jimmy Savile in 2000 portrayed the TV presenter as a complex eccentric but four years after the death of the disgraced DJ and the appalling revelations that followed, Louis looks back and reflects on his brush with evil and wonders whether he could have done more to expose him. pics | Rex Features

I

was at my wedding in July 2012 when I learned that the DJ and TV presenter Jimmy Savile was to be unmasked as a sexual predator in an upcoming ITV documentary. At that time, I imagined I knew Savile reasonably well. I’d made my own documentary about him in 2000, filming with him for about two weeks at his various homes around Britain. I’d stayed in contact for several years after the film went out, making occasional trips up to Leeds. There was always a professional pretext - a DVD commentary to record, a new series to promote - but the visits also had a social dimension. The Jimmy Savile I knew then was a contradictory figure... Enigmatic and slightly remote, hiding behind his showbusiness patter and anecdotes Visits usually involved a meal at a local restaurant and sometimes an overnight stay at his penthouse overlooking Roundhay Park. We had a friendly relationship. There was scant sign of any sort of love life. He was insular. Social events were on his terms - he had to be the centre of attention. He was also prone to dropping the occasional dark hint of unconventional interests - he’d make tantalising references to his connection with Myra Hindley, or joke about his visits to Broadmoor and his conversations with Peter Sutcliffe. But Savile could also come across - and it’s not easy to write this now - as a rather likeable person, good-humoured, knowledgeable, 'un-starry' in his manner of life and in his friendships with local Leeds characters. His self-centredness had the effect of making him undemanding company - he was relaxing to be around. One of my reasons for keeping in touch was that I was aware I hadn’t quite figured him out. For a while I kept notes for a book I thought I might write one day that would try to unravel who he was. Sometimes he mentioned girlfriends coming to visit, but I was never quite sure how much of that to believe. In 2001, beyondmags.com | 69

a year after my documentary went out, I met two women, then in their forties, who told me they’d been girlfriends of his decades earlier. One of them had been 15 at the beginning of the relationship. I mentioned it to colleagues at work - but to be honest, I didn’t think a great deal of it, seeing it as symptomatic of a different time. I’d last seen him in 2006. When he died, five years later, I wrote a blog post, expressing a sense of guilt about not having visited him towards the end. “He was a complete one-off,” I wrote. “Wrestler, charity fundraiser, deejay, fixer, prankster, and professional enigma.” We are still, as a society, attempting to recover from the reverberations begun by that ITV documentary, and the tsunami of revelations that followed from it. The accounts of the victims are written up in a collection of reports issued by the BBC, various police forces, and several NHS hospitals. They number in the hundreds, and include multiple instances of rape and child molestation. Those revelations, in turn, have sparked a wave of investigations into other well-known figures, some of whom have also been found guilty of sex crimes - Max Clifford, Rolf Harris, Chris Denning and Gary Glitter. Meanwhile, those people who were friendly with Savile have had to come to terms with the role he played in their lives. For my own part, that has involved a process of taking stock attempting to piece together what I knew of the man and how it fits with the accounts of the victims. Late last year, I began doing this in a more concerted way as part of a follow-up TV documentary. I interviewed victims. I also spoke to other people who knew him - friends and colleagues, some of whom worked alongside him for decades. In the process I tried to form a picture of who Jimmy Savile was and how someone known to millions for his programmes and his charity work had, over several decades, got away with a catalogue of crimes. Behind all of this there was a more personal mission - to figure out my own role in the affair and whether I was, in some way, 'played'? Now, after the revelations, any effort to tackle Jimmy Savile has to have at its heart the experience of the victims. For years they were invisible - finally they have a voice. We ended up using interviews with four victims in our finished documentary, all of them on camera and identifiable. Speaking to them was, for me, a delicate and slightly nervewracking experience. I was also aware they might see me as yet another person who failed them, by not doing more to expose Jimmy Savile while he was alive. His ability to target the defenceless - teenagers in care, patients recovering in hospital, children from troubled homes - helps explain why he wasn’t caught They were the least likely to resist; they were also least likely to be listened to. Perhaps most heartbreakingly, several victims expressed regret over a self-perceived (and wholly unjustified) sense of failure to speak out. They thought it was just them. If only they’d known there were others, they said, they would have done something to stop him. I wanted to get the goods on Savile. The trouble was, I had no clear sense of what those goods were. He’d given me free range of his penthouse. I pulled random letters and memorabilia off his desk. I tried to break up his spiel - I brought up a recent article in the Daily Mail, entitled “Jim Fixed Me”, in which his long-time personal assistant talked about the pain of being summarily fired. He tolerated my questions and interjections with relatively

good grace until, several hours in, he showed signs of losing his patience: “It’s a lot easier to make negative programmes than positive ones,” he said. I explained that we weren’t trying to make a positive programme so much as a truthful one. “Right. Make it as negative as you like. That’s all right. See you in court. Take a few quid off you same as I take a few quid off anybody. Money has no conscience.” My most resolute attempt to figure out his secret came on a visit to the seafront flat he shared with his mother, The Duchess. He’d shown me some personal effects of hers that he still kept in a wardrobe, including the clothes he got drycleaned once a year. As I leafed through a collection of old photographs, some showing him with his arms around various girls, I attempted to nail him down on the subject of his sexual interests. Why, in the whole time he’d been in the public eye, had he never been linked with anyone in the papers? I asked. “I think it’s because I’ve never been linked to anybody,” he said. Had he never had a girlfriend? “Friends that are girls, eight million,” he replied. “Friends that are girls. But girlfriend in the sense of today, i.e. you are together, you don’t bother with anybody else, etc? No. Never.” He seemed to be presenting a rather improbable scenario of himself as an itinerant Don Juan with paramours all over Britain, all of them somehow flattered by the attention of an aged DJ in a tracksuit. It didn’t add up. On one of our last days of filming, we discussed the rumours of paedophilia. I had asked him why he always said in interviews that he didn’t like children. “We live in a very funny world,” he said. “And it’s easier for me, as a single man, to say ‘I don’t like children’, because that puts a lot of salacious tabloid people off the hunt.” “Is that basically so the tabloids don’t pursue this whole is he or isn’t he a paedophile line?” I asked. “Oh, aye,” he said. “How do they know whether I am not? How does anybody know whether I am? Nobody knows whether I am or not. I know I’m not… That’s my policy and it’s worked a dream.” Savile’s relationships, with men and women, were conducted on his terms. He expected loyalty, but did not like being at the beck and call of others. Travelling between his houses, living in his caravan, going on his cruises, he led a vagabond existence, a little like the wild animals he sometimes compared himself to. He would also make constant references to his friends in high places - the Royal Family, in particular - while also advertising his absolute discretion. “Omerta”, he said, when I asked about his relations with the powerful. “When you’re not a grass, you’re not a grass.” But this code of secrecy and loyalty pervaded his relationships in general. He described himself as being like a mafia boss. “The Godfather… il capo di tutti capi.” There were references to “friends with strong Sicilian accents”. Again, it came off sounding faintly ludicrous - it was a bit of comic schtick. Or was it? Late one night, in an unguarded moment after I’d gone to bed, he reminisced to my director Will Yapp about his days running nightclubs in the north. He wouldn’t stand for any nonsense, he said. Anyone who gave him trouble, he’d lock them in his “boiler house”. They’d be there all night “pleading to get out”. The police had questioned him, but he’d talked his way out of it: “I never got nicked, and I’ve never altered.” Re-entering the world of Savile was like travelling across a landscape ravaged by a hurricane. The survivors were making sense of what happened in different ways, but no one was untouched by what they had lived through.

THE GIFT OF PRESENCE Business coach Deborah Ogden discusses how we should all make time for other people in order to achieve more.

s I write, Christmas is still a few weeks away yet already the stores are twinkling with their festive displays and the adverts on the television are attempting to brainwash us, and our children, that we truly cannot live without the latest robotic chimp or Nexo Knights Lego set. As a nation, we spend a small fortune on the perfect present that will be opened in seconds and often discarded before the festive feeling has faded. Last year an advert from a wellknown Swedish furniture store went viral. It featured an experiment where children were asked to write and tell their parents what they really wanted from them for Christmas. The list included ‘spend more time with me’, ‘listen a bit more’ and my personal favourite; ‘tickle me more’. The gift of our attention is one of the most powerful things we can share. I frequently work with senior Executives who are seeking the holy grail of ‘presence’. We all know someone who seems to ‘own the room’ from the moment they walk in. We recognise those who have that certain ‘it’ quality. Barak Obama has it, Bill Clinton is a master (Hillary is not), Oprah, and our 72 | beyond Issue 50

own Queen Elizabeth all exude this quality: presence. Presence allows you to connect and influence: drawing your audience in, earning their trust and compelling them to be a part of whatever you are offering. Those who do it successfully seem to exude presence as if it were second nature, hence the common misconception that those who have it, are born with it; we even describe people as ‘born leaders’. Yes, some are dealt a better hand from the start, but the great news for the rest of us is that it can be learned. The secret lies in a wonderful quote from Maya Angelou: ‘People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.’ How often are we truly present in someone’s company, listening to their every word rather than waiting for our turn to speak in the conversation? The power of presence is well-documented in politics and a great example goes back to Victorian Britain during a close run general election contest between William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli. The week before

the election, on separate occasions, both candidates entertained the same woman for dinner. When asked her opinion by the press she responded that on dining with Mr Gladstone she felt she was dining with the cleverest man in Britain. And dining with Mr Disraeli? ‘I felt like I was the cleverest person in Britain.’ Disraeli went on to win the election. In our busy, busy lives 100 percent attention is a scarce commodity. Think about it today; each time you interact with someone give the gift of your full attention. A colleague at work, your mum, your friend, your child. espite countless articles about the need to make a Will it is a constant struggle for solicitors to persuade clients to make them. It is partly that none of us like to talk about death (particularly our own) but, also, making a Will is one of those things that feels as though it can always be put off to another day. It is quite common for clients who have been considering making a Will finally to be prompted to do so when somebody they know has died, when they have suffered an illness themselves or immediately before going on holiday. Even though, taking the world as a whole, you are statistically more likely to be kicked to death by a donkey than to die in an air crash. In fact, when we make a Will for a client we are not simply selling a legal document, we are providing peace of mind. We buy insurance in order to protect our property and family in case something happens. We should treat making a Will in the same way. If disaster strikes those we leave behind will be provided for. We live in an uncertain world and none of us can be sure what is around the corner. It is best if we are prepared. According to recent accident statistics: On average, three people die in the UK every year after testing a 9-volt battery on their tongue; About 31 people die in the UK every year after watering the Christmas tree while the fairy lights are switched on; 150 people are killed every year by being hit on the head by falling coconuts (admittedly probably not in the UK); Several thousand people require hospital treatment every year in the United States after accidents involving their trousers; Several thousand more people require hospital treatment after accidents involving their duvets; Worst of all around 1500 people each year require hospital treatment in the United States after answering the telephone while ironing and putting the wrong hand to their ear. he record-breaking Yorkshire Rows are about to crest a thrilling new wave – heading for stardom as their epic row across the Atlantic Ocean could soon be made into a film. The four working mums from York – Niki Doeg, Helen Butters, Frances Davies and Janette Benaddi - became the oldest all-female crew to row an ocean when they completed the world’s toughest rowing race, the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge in February. Now they’re set to follow in the footsteps of fellow Yorkshirewomen The Calendar Girls by having their inspirational story turned onto a book and a film. Four Mums In A Boat will hit the bookstores next March, while film and television rights for their tale of skill, tenacity, team spirit and female friendship have been snapped up by UK Production company Archery Pictures. The Yorkshire Rows team, with a collective age of 190 and eight children between them said: “Our story proves that, given the support of friends and family and some very serious organisational skills, age and responsibilities do not have to come between you and your dreams. “Life may not begin at 40 but an adventure of a lifetime most certainly can.” The Yorkshire Rows team started out as four ordinary professionals, mums and friends who had only been rowing for four years when they decided to embark on the cross-Atlantic race, raising vital funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Leeds. The women admit wine was involved in the decision to take up the challenge. And a challenge it certainly was. Three thousand miles, 67 days of hell and high water during which the intrepid team lost power, water, their steering and two stone in weight. The foursome showed fortitude in the face of hurricanes and attacks from flying fish, as well as the comparatively mundane challenges of seasickness and injury. When their clothes supply ran out they rowed naked, resulting in a collective raised eyebrow among breakfast TV viewers when the BBC inadvertently broadcast a bare-cheeked clip of Helen. Food came freeze-dried in packs and a Christmas ‘dinner’ was a stick of pepperoni. “It was more survival than a rowing race,” they have said of the experience. It’s easy to see how their Atlantic challenge has all the makings of a film that will bring cinema-goers flocking. Pip Williams, at Archery Pictures, says: “I was truly inspired by the story of these women who prove that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. “Their positive outlook and humour brings warmth to what is ultimately a hugely formidable challenge and achievement. “We couldn’t be more excited to now be working with them and HQ to bring their story to the screen.” For Janette, a clinical researcher, Helen, a communications expert in the NHS, Frances, a solicitor and business owner Niki, it is a fitting end to a year that started battling 40ft waves and closes with a book and film deal in the pipeline.

KING OF THE SWING He headed to Rio armed with a dream of Olympic success and returned home wearing a bronze medal around his neck. Now Yorkshire gymnast Nile Wilson is more motivated than ever, as he talks to Claire Schofield about Olympic glory and his ambitions for future success. pics | John Garon

W

hat an incredible summer it has been for Britain’s athletes. On the sun-drenched shores of vibrant Rio, Team GB stormed to success having raced, swum, dived, tumbled and cycled to a record-breaking 67 medals. Now that the sun has set on the razzmatazz of the Rio Games and the glittering shores of the Copacabana have been left behind, there’s one proud Yorkshireman who’s still reflecting on those whirlwind three weeks in Brazil’s most flamboyant city. As far as standout years go, Nile Wilson has probably had the best of his life. After his early beginnings in the sport at just four-years-old, the gruelling hours of hard work and steely determination finally paid off when his lifelong dream of becoming an Olympian was realised. With the eyes of the world on him, Nile soared through a near perfect routine and cemented his name in history as he took the bronze and became the first ever Britain to win an Olympic medal on the high bar. Now having had the chance to reflect on his phenomenal success, Yorkshire’s king of the swing says the Olympics was everything he hoped it would be: “I had the best three weeks of my life and the whole experience was absolutely incredible. Being there in the athlete’s village and meeting all these amazing people was fantastic and then to come home with a medal just made it for me and topped off the whole experience.” “To make history is an amazing achievement and the expectations were so high, but I was so proud of my performance and all I was thinking about was doing the best that I could do on that day.” Of course while the British team enjoyed a string of medal successes, including two golds, a silver and two bronze, they didn’t get off to the flying start they had hoped for, facing disappointment in the team final after just missing out on the medals in fourth place. “We put it all out there in the final and that team medal was our main

goal, so to come fourth was disappointing and a bit gutting,” he recalls. “But then we bounced back in the individuals and to take five medals was absolutely incredible, so I think in the end that fourth place did spur us on and definitely inspired us individually.” As the individual wins started to filter in, including team mate Max Whitlock’s double gold victory, Nile had to endure a long wait before his crowning moment, but he proved to be more than capable of handling the pressure. “The waiting and time in between was challenging and with all the nerves and pressure I was under I was just happy to do a clean routine, so to come away with a bronze was unbelievable,” he says. “I have a bit of a ritual where I say to myself ‘come on, I can do this’ and it’s something I’ve done since I was a kid. It’s a bit of positive self-talk and psychologically it helps me get ready for my routine. Going into that final I knew I had a great chance and I’m just so happy with how I performed throughout the whole competition.” And when his moment on the podium did finally arrive, he assures me it was 100% worth the wait. “The emotion kind of took me by surprise, but I think it shows just how much it means. You train for so long for so many years and you

have to sacrifice so much. The tears were a bit of a shock, but it was a very special moment for me.” While Wilson may have made his way into the medals on the high bar, he also proved he’s quite the multitalented gymnast after securing eighth place in the all-round final. “To come eighth in the world at my first Olympics at 20 years-old is an amazing feeling and I’m so proud of that,” he beams. “I want to be the best all-rounder in the world and I want to become World and Olympic Champion, so I know I need to improve my weaker areas. My goal is to keep performing and making finals on the world stage and I want to be challenging for medals every time.” He has certainly proved himself as one of the greats and he admits seeing Max claim double Olympic glory has inspired him to go on to do the same. “I’ve trained with Max for many years now and to see him do that was just incredible and so inspirational,” he says. “To become Olympic Champion is what we all dream of and it’s certainly inspired me for Tokyo. I want to go there and repeat what he did, if not better, so now it’s back to hard work and I’m really excited for the next four years.” Since his return to Yorkshire, Wilson is still having the time of his life as he heads back

into training to tackle new skills and prepare for the next big championships, with his mind already eyeing Olympic glory in 2020. “Coming home and heading back in to normal training is quite challenging when you’ve had that kind of experience, but it’s what I love to do. When you’re in competition mode the training is very intense, so it’s nice just to enjoy it and learn some new things, and to scare yourself a little bit and get that heart pumping,” he laughs. “The next big competition season kicks off in the new year and I’ll be working towards the European and World Championships. I’ve also been invited to the World Cup Series which is really exciting. It’s just about continuing to do these major events and I want to be in the best shape possible to be challenging for those medals.” But with so many achievements to his name, what’s next for the ambitious 20 year-old? “Now I’ve got the full set of medals from all of the major events, it’s amazing just to step back and be able to say I’ve got World, European, Commonwealth and Olympic titles,” he beams. “But now I’m focusing on becoming champion and I want the gold! World and Olympic Champion is what I’ve dreamed about, so I’m going to do everything possible to achieve those goals and dreams.”

WALK OF LIFE beyond reports on the incredible journey made by Parkinson’s sufferer Dave Clark as he completed the Coast to Coast Walk

s Dave Clarke waded into the North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay, a wave of emotion engulfed him. It was the moment he had waited nearly two weeks and travelled 200 miles to savour and as he entered the water, the tears flowed. The Sky Sports presenter, who grew up in Ilkley, had just completed the gruelling Coast to Coast walk - an incredible achievement for anybody but even more remarkable when you consider Dave lives with Parkinson’s. He said: “I walked into the sea at Robin Hood’s Bay and definitely had a tear in my eye. I wanted to prove that having a diagnosis of Parkinson’s isn’t the end. You can still lead a very active and positive life and walking 200 miles just proves that.” The amazing challenge raised over £150,000 for Parkinson’s UK and saw Dave joined by hundreds of well-wishers along the way. Sky Sports F1 executive producer Martin Turner, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s just last year also strapped on his hiking boots to join Dave for the entire journey as did life-long friend Stephen Senior, owner of Ilkley hardware store Morten’s. Dave, a familiar face to darts fans, has covered boxing, soccer, tennis and the Olympics in his years as a sports presenter so is no stranger to seeing people triumph over adversity. So after months of training he was determined to complete the 13-day trek from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. Overcoming exhaustion, injuries and a host of other hurdles and hiccups along the way he proved what can be achieved through positive

thinking and sheer grit. Dave said of his adventure: “The Coast to Coast was breathtaking and brilliant. A tide of positivity followed us across England. More than 100 people joined-along the way. I’ve managed to raise over £150,000 for vital Parkinson’s research.” “I chose the Coast to Coast because I used to go on holiday, as a child, to Robin Hood’s Bay and see people walking into the sea with rucksacks on wondering what they were doing? I wanted to do it while I’m still fit enough. Parkinson’s is a chronic degenerative neurological condition, which will eventually rob me of the ability to walk. “Having so many people join me on different days kept my spirits high. “The hardest bit was clambering across the spine of the lake district. I found the downhill bits challenging, but my mental strength kept me going. “You just escape everything, it’s a very simple life. You get your boots and rucksack on and just walk and walk and walk - it was a life-changing experience.” Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s five years ago at the age of 44 - the same age at which his father had been diagnosed with the condition years before. Parkinson’s affects one in 500 people in the UK, causing tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement. From the first step until the last, Clark and Turner received constant support, including donations from unexpected well wishers. Dave said: “We were in the middle of nowhere and this farmer suddenly turned up on his quad bike with a sheepdog. He said:

“Are you Dave Clark? Then handed me £10, which was lovely.” His Sky Sports employers also committed to doubling every pound raised up to £50,000 for Parkinson’s UK. The result of Dave’s decision to put his best foot forward for the charity? Half a million steps taken, plenty of challenges overcome, lots of laughter, several blisters – and £150,000 to support the work to educate, campaign, fund research and support people affected by Parkinson’s.
