LET’S BLOW THIS JOINT

In 1967 Jimi Hendrix turned up at The Troutbeck Hotel in Ilkley and caused a riot. 50 years on we speak to the man who booked the rock legend, got him out in one piece and find out what really happened the night Hendrix hit town. words | Mark Bowness pics | Rex Features

INTERVIEW | Jimi Hendrix

Pictures from the Ilkley gig

A

s Jimi Hendrix drove slowly up to the Troutbeck Hotel on a cold and wintry night on March 12th 1967, it seemed like the entire town of Ilkley was making the same journey. The young 24-year-old American frowned, took a long draw on his smoke, peered out of the window and then with a grin on his face turned to his friend Stuart Frais and in a deep drawl said: “Let’s blow this joint.” Two hours later and just one song into the gig, Jimi, true to his word, had well and truly blown the joint away. And while The Troutbeck Hotel in Ilkley - now a sedate nursing home - perhaps won’t go down in history as one of the world’s most notorious rock venues, it was for that one night fifty years ago, home to a right old rock n roll riot. The place erupted as the police arrived and stopped the three-piece ‘Jimi Hendrix Experience’ in mid flow and as the guitar legend disappeared backstage, the fans took it out on anything they could get their hands on. Reports of fighting, smashed furniture and pictures ripped from the walls were all made as over 1,000 fans were left waiting inside and outside the hotel for Hendrix to reappear. And one man who was responsible for getting Hendrix in and out remembers exactly what happened on that infamous night. Stuart Frais was the manager who booked Hendrix to play at Ilkley and who first took the rising star on the road in the UK. He said: “I remember the Ilkley gig well and although it is one of those nights that is surrounded by myths and legends, I can remember it clearly. “I had met Jimi the year before, prior to him hitting the headlines when he had first arrived in England and I offered to get him some gigs up north. “I booked him for £22 and 10 shillings to play three concerts, one in Newcastle, one in Leeds and the one in Ilkley. “We used The Troutbeck a lot in those days and the timing for Jimi was perfect as he had just got to number one with Hey Joe. “I remember we stopped at Harry Ramsden’s in Guiseley on the way to Ilkley and I told him what a nice crowd they were at The Troutbeck and how we were expecting a couple of hundred people to be there.” But by the time Stuart and Hendrix turned up in Ilkley on that Sunday night it was grid-locked as the crowds flocked up to the moorside hotel. Stuart remembers: “I looked at Jimi and he looked at me and I could tell it was going to be an eventful night. “Jimi had just got to number one but the group were still

12 | beyond issue 51

in their infancy and they had something to prove, they had to make an impression. And they certainly did…” Because so many people had turned up, Stuart arranged for the band to play three separate concerts of about five songs each so everybody could see Hendrix play. The cost was 7/6d to see the concert and The Troutbeck was dangerously over- packed before the band took the stage for the first time. Hendrix and his band thundered through the first number in a typically nonchalant fashion. It is hard to imagine the psychedelic vibes of London’s Marquee and U.F.O club had now arrived in Ilkley and as the audience rose to the challenge of the sonic onslaught of one man and his Fender Stratocaster, members of the crowd began to clamber over furniture and each other in order to get a better view of the guitar genius. But halfway through the second song, as the bank of Marshall amps were cranked to the point of staving in the head of anybody who dared get too close, a nervous police chief stepped onto the stage to stop the show. It was probably the worst decision he ever made. Stuart, now 71, recalled: “There was absolutely no need for the police to get involved and while it was getting boisterous it was certainly not a critical situation and the police intervention only made things worse.” As the band resigned themselves back to the dressing room, the fans who included bank clerks, school teachers and nurses began to vent their anger. There were reports of fittings torn from the walls of the hotel, windows smashed with chairs and fans storming the stage before spilling out into the crisp night air to eventually disperse and go their separate ways. Looking back, Stuart, who escaped with Jimi into the night said: “Hendrix couldn’t believe it, he thought the police had over-reacted. “I think the fact it was Hendrix, who had such charisma and presence, threw the police and they didn’t know how to handle it. “He had arrived on the scene and nobody had ever seen anything like it. He was an incredible musician and one of the most charming and polite people you could meet offstage despite this wild image he had created.” “It was a pleasure to have worked with such a genius and the world lost one of its greats when he died in 1970 aged just 27. “Thankfully, Ilkley got to see him and it will always be remembered as the night Jimi blew the joint.”

BEYOND BELIEF

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL

W

e certainly live in strange and wondrous times. Since we last spoke the world has been taken over by a very disturbed man who has all the self control of Jimmy Savile wearing an invisibility cloak at Hogwarts. Not even Walt Disney himself could have imagined that one day Donald would rise to such power but here we are in 2017 teetering over the edge of a very steep cliff. Only the Americans could possibly vote in a man like Trump and still not realise what a huge mistake they’ve made. This is a man who possesses the face of a novelty Toby jug made in a secure unit pottery class and the mind of a warped batman villain. People say he is a great businessman but so what?

Karen and Shannon Matthews were a very formidable hide and seek team but I wouldn’t want them organising any party games for my kids. As for the wall Trump plans to put up, I hear the Mexicans have nearly finished it and you can't blame them. Who foots the bill remains to be seen but in my wall-related experience, there is always a way to minimise payment. Last week I managed to get my neighbour to build and pay for a wall separating us, in its entirety. All it cost me was the price of a leopard skin thong which I wear in the back garden to sunbathe in. Mind how you go and hopefully I’ll see you on the other side of the wall.

What the fox going on?

This time last year the whole country was rooting for Leicester City to win the Premiership title under the magnificent Claudio Ranieri. Yet just eight months after achieving the impossible and winning it, the club sack him. If anything sums up the fickle and spineless nature of modern football, then this is truly it. The Leicester players and board should hang their heads in shame. We’re all rooting for you again lads. To go down.

I thought Lord Trumpton would have enough to worry about without inviting the Ku Klux Klan to his inauguration celebrations.

Indisputably TV’s most dangerous and damaging show, The Jump incredibly returned to our screens this year and the nation waited with baited breath, as did the overworked staff at Kühtai A&E department in Austria where the annual slaughter and breakage of celebrities takes place. Last year gymnast Beth Tweddle was nearly left eating through a straw following a crash on the slopes, while Rebecca Adlington and Tina Holbey also caused blue lights to flash. Yet still the show has the nerve to come back for more with a devil-may-care attitude which I kinda like from those wacky Channel 4 TV types. But then, when The Jump started I suddenly remembered, it’s really, really crap.

PIE IN THE SKY

LET IT GO Let it Shine? Let it end please and never return. Despite it being just soooooo emotional for those brave little soldiers, they really do need to get a grip. And preferably not of each other. 16 | beyond issue 51

Trainspotting 2 de-railed me. After such a groundbreaking and iconic first movie back in the 90s, T2 left me on the platform wishing I hadn’t bought that second cup of lukewarm tea. But big up to the Scottish dad who sent his son to World Book Day a school dressed as Begbie from the film. I only hope the wee laddie managed to deliver the immortal line: "That lassie got hit by a fruit shoot, and no **** leaves here till we find out what **** did it."

Pie-eyed Wayne Shaw

The humble pie has been getting some bad press in recent weeks. First up, larger-than-life Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was caught scoffing one during his team’s televised FA Cup game against Arsenal and was promptly sacked amidst a betting scam surrounding him eating the pie. Then, hot on that tale of woe came a wedding in Bradford which was reduced to ruin when guests started a mass brawl at a hotel. Over a pork pie. Thank God it wasn’t a Jewish wedding otherwise it could have really kicked off.

FASHION

NEW RECRUIT There is always a danger of stepping over the very fine line that exists between high fashion and fancy dress, and never more so than when dipping a toe into the military trend. Tread carefully, donning a head-to-toe camo suit is ill-advised but a little embellishment and a strong silhouette will be your closest ally.

RE-BOOT YOUR WARDROBE

pring brings life and energy. Allow this vigour to infiltrate your style and inject new trends into your wardrobe. Embrace the fresh, the bold and try something new. You might find it quite refreshing! Harvey Nichols Leeds breaks down the most important menswear trends for the forthcoming season.

ALPHA INDUSTRIES CWU black shell flight jacket £180

MAHARISHI custom olive organic cotton trousers £135

LAW AND ORDER The utility trend gets an update with a cleaner, neater direction for SS17. Khaki is still a prevalent colour and key pieces include pressed slacks, patch-pocket jackets and boxy shirts. Heavily influenced by the US, the trend takes its cue from military uniforms and the uniforms from correctional facilities.

HOW TO WEAR IT: Keep it strict, starched and neutral. Rules are rules after all! Alpha Industries flight jacket nails the military aesthetic. This CWU flight jacket is still issued to USAF and Navy pilots to this day. On-trend and authentic. Only rugged, tough boots can finish this look. The footwear must be as strong and masculine as the rest of the look.

History tends to repeat itself, and this is especially true in fashion. The rebellious spirit of the 90s have returned, with slogan tees, graffiti jackets, street wear and acid wash colliding. A jolt back to the past for some of us and fresh new looks for the rest.

SOLID HOMME Charcoal neoprene sweatshirt £300

HOW TO WEAR IT: Wear your logos and labels with pride. Calvin Klein’s imagery was the backdrop to the 90s, so these jogging bottoms are a knowing nod to nostalgia. You don’t need to translate the trend too literally though. The Adidas Originals Tubular instinct hi-tops are reworked rather than exact copies. Modern twists stop it feeling too fancy dress for those that have done 90s fashion once already.

A NEW MASCULINITY Embrace a modern masculinity and wear this season’s hottest colour – pink! Soft dusky pinks and floral prints brought a more gentle approach to menswear on the runways. Silhouettes were loose and lightweight providing an unconventional alternative to tailoring and sportswear.

HOW TO WEAR IT: With confidence. If a full-on pink and floral look is a step too far for you, break up the softer colours and fabrics with cool slate greys and traditional pinstripe. These Neil Barrett cropped trousers are perfect to fragment the pink hue, a perfectly fresh look for spring. FILLING PIECES Ghost perforated suede trainers £195

FRUIT PASTELS

As we march into a new season, hair colour takes centre stage. Our Technical Director, Jenny Pelter, translates catwalk colour seasonally, so you know what’s set to be hot before the sun starts to shine. Pastels have been a hit for some time now, and this season is no exception, with models rocking the runways with soft candy shades that look set to be big news for Spring/Summer 2017. At Vera Wang, pastel pink milkshake-inspired hair was a hit, while at Marc Jacobs pastel dreadlocks made a huge statement. These colours will be perfect for those of you looking to switch up your colour for the new season, and can be adapted to suit your skin tone and style. SPRING IN YOUR STEP The spring/summer runways added some much needed sparkle to the new season. Here, Emma Rowbottom, Director of Seven Publicity, looks at what’s set to be hot over the coming months.

NATURAL WINNER I’m loving the new Aura Botanica launch from Kérastase. The four fabulous products – shampoo, moisturising conditioner, multi-use serum and bi-phase oil mist – use up to 98% natural origin products and boast no sulfates, silicones or parabens, leaving locks natural, weightless and with a healthy glow. Visit any of our salons now to enjoy an indulgent backwash treatment, too, where you can sit back and relax as one of our stylists indulges you with a relaxing hand massage, head palming and Konjac sponge ritual. Visit westrowhair.com to find your nearest salon. RRP from £21.20.

MAKING WAVES The beach wave is, and always will be, a classic look for summer, but S/S17 takes on an edgier feel with lightweight tousled locks out, and wetlook crisp curls in. Take inspiration from Julien Macdonald LFW S/S17 for thick waves with added crunch. For that surf's up 70s inspired chic, look to Alexander Wang at NYFW S/S17. Recreate the beach-ready style by heavily applying L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni ART Wild Stylers Beach Waves styling spray, and scrunch the hair for added texture, until a towel-dried look is achieved. Finish by pulling Kérastase Styling Baume Double Je through the ends of hair, for added structure, and apply rosy pink shades to the apples of cheeks for true sun-kissed style.

From pretty pastels at Marc Jacobs and Bora Aksu to rainbow brights at Topshop Unique, this season is all about colour, and it's back to the fuschia for many. Making its mark at Bottega Veneta and Valentino, this hot hue went down a storm and is set to be big news this season. Alongside colour, ruffles and tulle reigned supreme, most notably at Alexander McQueen and Dior respectively, making them the trimmings of choice once the temperature rises. When it comes to accessories, mini made its mark, with bags seriously downsizing this season. Hair also took centre stage, with models making waves at shows including Loewe and Roksanda, with plaits big news at Valentino and chic chignons at Dolce & Gabbana. A highlight of the season was Anya Hindmarch. Hosted at the Royal Horticultural Halls near Victoria Station, London, the show unfolded across an architectural stage, with a stunning, spiralled catwalk, inspired by Ancient Greek amphitheatres. Working as part of the L’Oréal Professionnel team, and assisting session styling supremo Sam McKnight, Westrow Academy’s Danielle Hill helped create trend-led styles backstage. Celebrating a collection of muted neoprene coats and colourful leather bags, the designer was inspired by the relationship between geometry and art, using craft techniques to create complex shapes with the leatherwork and outerwear in her collection. Hair inspo: Models’ hair reflected a futuristic style, inspired by the bandages worn after having a facelift. The style: Hair was slicked-back into a low ponytail, before neoprene ‘bandages’ were crisscrossed around the head and neck. Recreate: A trio of L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Fix Design, L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray, and L’Oréal Professionnel Wet Domination Shower Shine were used to create a super smooth and shiny hair texture, that was straightened using Cloud Nine styling tools. SLEEP EASY beyond reports on how U Dentistry is helping to tackle the problems of snoring and sleep apnoea with a ground-breaking dental device. Sleep apnoea is a problem that could have serious consequences as it increases the risk of heart problems, stroke, high blood pressure, and even road traffic accidents. Dan believes the device could potentially save the lives of severe sufferers by allowing them to get good quality, regular sleep and therefore minimising these risks. The plastic splint covers both the upper and lower teeth and is held in place by an accurate fit making it comfortable to open and close the mouth, as well as speak with the device in place. Its aim is to move the jaw forward to prevent the tongue and mandible - the lower jaw - from falling back and blocking the airway. “By pulling the lower jaw forward, you open the airway which can sometimes be blocked because the jaw is sitting back,’ says Dan “We can all move our lower jaw forward a centimetre or so from just below the ear and that is what this device does, but it also keeps it in place during sleep.” “It has not been widely used so far, but it has proved to be very successful.” While Dan says the splint is not always a 100% cure for snoring he is confident it can reduce or eliminate the symptoms and improve the health and safety of sufferers. As one of only a handful of dentists in Yorkshire who offer this service, Dan - who also provides a full range of general and cosmetic dentistry - is seeing a growing number of patients coming through his door desperate to beat the snoring and bring back some normality to their lives. He said: “Snoring can be an incredibly debilitating condition for a sufferer and their partner, and it is hugely satisfying to be able to offer a solution which can completely change people’s lives for the better.” “Snoring affects around a third of the adult population in the UK, and this number is increasing all the time. Thankfully there is now help and by fitting this simple device, we aim to improve the lives of those who suffer.” Dan ensures that all his patients have a full understanding of any treatment that is required and says he is happy to explain all options that are available. He said: “It is important to me that patients go away after a consultation happy that what we offer is right for them and that everything is explained fully. My goal is to improve the health and well-being of every patient, and this is one area of dentistry which can have a huge impact on their lives.” Dan Warren

If you snore or know somebody who snores, call U dentistry now on 01943 605058 to discuss whether this treatment is right for you.

I

t’s a common problem that has driven loving couples to different ends of their homes for generations. Causing irritability and intolerable sleep deprivation, snoring has long been the bed bug of a weary nation. But for those who live with somebody who snores, life could soon become much easier thanks to one Yorkshire dentist who is working hard to educate his patients on a safe and effective remedy. Dan Warren, a dentist at U Dentistry in Ilkley, has a special interest in the subject, and as a Member of the Society of Dental Sleep Medicine he is encouraging patients who snore to try out a new device which has proven to have up to a 97% success rate. In studies, The Mandibular Repositioning Device (MRD) which looks like a gumshield, substantially reduced the level of snoring for most people. The device has also worked for people with sleep apnoea - a more severe breathing problem which can cause the sufferer to repeatedly stop breathing for several seconds as the muscles in the throat relax and temporarily close the airway. 26 | beyond issue 51

love makeup and have been wearing it for years. Many years. However, I realise that time spent wearing face paint does not necessarily equal expertise of application and know-how. It’s still difficult to imagine a day when the mention of contouring doesn’t bring me out in a cold sweat or when I will use a sponge instead of my greasy paws to slap on foundation. I am therefore totally in awe of the tribe of young beauty vloggers who are fearless in the face of highlighter, hungry for the latest concealer and fascinated by the latest lipstick texture technology. These girls have skills and can stick on a false lash in their sleep. They know what they are looking for in a product and refreshingly, it is not dictated by price. They prime and buff and set different ‘looks’ and generally make my one-look-fits-all makeup feel amateurish and inadequate. They are impressive and I have certainly learnt a thing or two from them. So no more scratching out the dregs of my single shattered eyeshadow, I have bought a whole palette. And a sponge. Just psyching myself up to the contour kit now. Deep breaths.

INTERVIEW | Debbie Harry

32 | beyond issue 51

ONE WAY OR ANOTHER She might be older than your grandmother but Debbie Harry is showing no signs of slowing down. On the back of a new album she discusses what keeps her going and what she thinks of the modern music scene. words | Mark Bowness pics | Rex Features beyondmags.com | 33

INTERVIEW | Debbie Harry

H

aving endured a career spanning over five decades she has become one of the world’s most celebrated rock icons. Now aged 71, Debbie Harry, the lead singer of Blondie, is still strutting her stuff and looking as sensational as ever. With her band’s new album, Pollinator, set to be released in May, Harry recently posed on the cover of Wonderland magazine wearing thigh-high green boots, fishnet stockings and sporting a pout that would put stars 50 years her junior in the shade. Not bad for someone who could now be excused for putting her feet up and taking life a little easier. But then again Debbie Harry is not your average pensioner. Back in the 70s when she first burst onto the scene she left a global audience gasping and she’s been doing pretty much the same thing ever since. Though the band grew out of the New York punk scene in the mid-1970s, Blondie had an unashamedly pop slant, with their genre-bending music taking in elements of everything that was popular in clubs at the time, from rap to reggae and disco. But they also had a strong subversive streak. Looking back the former Playboy Bunny said: “It was very much about irony at that time. It was about a sophisticated sort of put-down, antisocial but witty. We were always trying for that play on words, for the double entendre.”

34 | beyond issue 51

Harry has always identified herself as a feminist, and there is a quiet strength in the way she presents herself, a sense that here is a woman very much in control. As a performer there was something defiantly self-contained about Harry. Although she constantly played with images of sexy blonde bombshells, there was a sense that she was doing was not to excite her audience but to please herself: you can look, but you can’t touch. Her impact was huge and her look still emerges on the catwalks today. She is flattered, but points out that her image was itself cobbled together from comic books and Hollywood films, mixed in with English punk influences and later the strong lines of the New York-based designer Stephen Sprouse. She added: “It’s very flattering and it’s nice to be loved like that. It’s amazing to me that it made such an impression, but also it seems like a natural process, if you go back to the things that influenced me.” If, in the late 1970s, Harry threw the ball in the air, it was Madonna who caught it and ran with it. In the mid-1980s Harry took a lengthy break from music while her former boyfriend and fellow band member Chris Stein battled with illness. Madonna took over the reins and with a similar blend of pop and New York-street attitude that had made Harry such a name, she became the global superstar. “There was a switch in music,” Harry says.

“And I think it may have been primarily with Madonna She really went to showbiz. She was a solo artist; she wasn’t in a band; she wasn’t representing anyone but herself. And she did very well.” Now music is a lot more about marketing, Harry says, and about building a brand identity. It has both good and bad sides, she goes on, shrugging – refusing to be drawn into criticising younger artists. It is healthy that they are far more businesssavvy, she points out. Although Blondie have sold more than 40 million records over the course of their career, they were never massively rich. She likens their management team at the peak of their success to absentee landlords. “They were very absent,” she says drily. “Most of our career, our contracts were created by the record label. We were innocent at the time but the contracts held, so that was really decisive. For some of our biggest years we were getting a very low percentage, which is unheard of nowadays.” Debbie Harry continues to work, she says, in part because she enjoys it, and in part because she has to financially. “It’s all wrapped up together.” She and Stein are no longer a couple (he is married and has two daughters; Harry is their godmother), but they still work together. “We’ve built an identity and a business. I certainly didn’t look at it like that when I started, but now we have that enterprise together – although he does work on his own, and I sometimes do. But I still love working with Chris.” Forty years on Blondie seem as relevant as ever. One Direction’s cover of One Way or Another for Comic Relief in 2013 introduced their music to a new, younger audience, and in 2014 Blondie played the Other Stage at Glastonbury. So what of the modern generation? Harry confesses to watching The X Factor as a guilty pleasure – although she says it is not as good now that the judges are all so positive. She said: “I liked it better when they were tougher. They’re very sweet now, very nice, and always trying to help these people along. But some of the bitter, darker humour was appealing to me! “If I was starting out now I don’t think I would try that sort of show, I was really much more interested in antisocial, underground things, and I didn’t want anyone choosing material for me.” As breathtakingly beautiful now as she was when she first found fame, Harry still has the same bone structure and features that made her a pin-up of the 80s. Talking about her image today she laughs: “I want to dress age-appropriately, but I also love those funky younger looks – and some days I think I pull it off better than others. I don’t really have a lot of women around

me when we’re on the road, so usually my crew are the ones who’ll say, ‘That looks good and then other times, they won’t say anything!” She has had a bit of cosmetic surgery (it goes with the job, she says casually) but admits there is also a mental element to ageing. “If you stay creative, interested and open to new things, you won’t stagnate. You have to look around, keep new influences coming in. A lot of people sort of pick a world to live in, and they’re comfortable in that – which can be disastrous.” Harry may turn 72 in July, but she says she has no thought of retiring, citing Yoko Ono’s full-on performances in her eighties as an inspiration. “I guess I’m supposed to be shocked by it,” she says of her age. “And maybe I should be. But I’m amazed by ageing and how it happens differently for different people.” She laughs again, eyes glittering with mischief. “All I can say is, I’m a lucky fxxxin’ bitch!” Blondie’s next album, Pollinator, is set to be released on May 5th.

INTERIOR MOTIVE Yorkshire's premier interior architecture and design house celebrates five years of amazing interiors.

R

ichard Grafton Interiors opened the doors to its Ilkley showroom last year and is already celebrating a huge milestone, five years in business for the premier interiors brand that has taken the Yorkshire interiors scene by

storm. Established in 2012 with a team of six and it's first showroom in Harrogate, Richard Grafton Interiors has gone from strength to strength in the past five years and a major part of its success is down to the completion of a stunning and wide range of projects that literally span the globe. From beautiful Strayside properties in its beloved hometown of Harrogate to Portugal holiday villas and LA 'celeb style' homes with the ultimate wow factor, the team has delivered it all and more. The Richard Grafton Interiors design team has grown quickly to 13 over the past five years and now features some of the regions most talented interior designers, and interior architects, working from both the Harrogate and Ilkley showrooms. The team brings a contemporary and luxury finish to homes and businesses

through the full turnkey solution, which includes everything from spatial planning to manufacturing bespoke artisan furniture. There has been huge investment in the extended Harrogate and new Ilkley showroom so that customers can see and feel for themselves what could be achieved in their homes. The showrooms are a hub of luxury contemporary interiors featuring bespoke furniture, beautiful home accessories and rooms sets with hand crafted cabinetry and finishes. Whilst Richard Grafton Interiors is firmly rooted in Yorkshire and takes inspiration from its surroundings, the designers also travel the world looking for the latest interiors trends from Moroccan furnishings to Hamptons-style fixtures, bringing a world-class perspective to their designs. Founder Richard Grafton comments: "Everything that we have achieved over the past few years has ensured that we are the only team outside of London to be able to truly offer the full scope of interiors support to our customers. From helping a customer to choose the perfect fabric for a blind to renovating their whole property, we have to ensure that we can deliver it all to the same impeccable standard." The close-knit team at Richard Grafton Interiors features designers from a whole range of different backgrounds, from engineering to fabric design, fashion and merchandising to cabinet making and this is what sets them apart from any other interior design firm in the region. One of those designers, Kim Robb has been with the business since it launched and has been instrumental in its journey, seeing the brand evolve and change beyond all recognition over the past five years.

INTERIORS

Here Kim talks all things interiors and what customers can expect to see from Richard Grafton Interiors in the future. On the journey so far: "It's impossible to choose a favorite project as I genuinely love all of them! From the Grand Victorian Villa, The Georgian Manor House and The Hampton-style Villa which can all be viewed on our website, they were all highlights and fantastic projects to be proud of. I love interiors and no two projects are ever the same. Our clients lead the way in terms of how they want to live and it's up to us to find the solutions and the style to make it work."

On current projects: "2017 has started off with a bang! I am working on quite a few 'full house' projects with clients who require the full turnkey solution that our team provides, from a refurbishment of a city centre town house to a new Scottish retreat, to a rural home of 20 years that needs an update! The big projects are something you can really get your teeth into but they also feed the smaller rooms which I love to tackle too. It's great to work with new clients or in some cases return clients who are ready to tackle something outside of the box."

42 | beyond issue 51

Kim Robb

INTERIORS

On interiors trends: "Trends don't really appear in obvious locations for my projects. If interiors take too much from the current they will date really quickly. I would encourage clients to choose for longevity over trend when it's something you have to live with day in day out and if you don't love it enough don't include it. Obviously it's hard to escape the explosion of florals and colour and the mix of vintage and mid-century retro styles of furniture at the moment but one size never fits all! The interiors brands really standing out for me are GP & J Baker, Mulberry, Designers Guild and the new launch from Black Edition has really caught my eye. We will be continuing to add to our in-house furniture collection over the coming months with two new informal dining chairs for our summer living collection and also introducing new sofa styles... I am always looking for the next perfect one, so watch this space!"

Richard Grafton

On the future:

"Looking back the past five years have flown by. I am very proud of all the team and how it has grown. We have worked really hard to get Richard Grafton Interiors where we are today, and have had to really learn everything we can, sometimes outside of our disciplines to take it to the next level. I have been lucky enough to travel to trade shows and buying trips around the world which always broaden the mind and also opens up the most fabulous world of interiors that we are a part of. I am extremely excited for the next five years as we orbit Yorkshire and continue to lead beyond!" With all that it has achieved in the past five years Richard Grafton Interiors is now firmly recognised as Yorkshire's premier interior architecture and design house and customers can look forward to it continuing to bring the latest in luxury interiors from around the world to homes and businesses in Yorkshire.

YORKSHIRE’S HIDDEN TREASURE beyond reports on The Antique Curio & Salvage Barn in Harrogate where a hidden treasure chest of wonder awaits you. 48 | beyond issue 51

INTERIORS

Rob Cain

D

eep in the heart of Yorkshire, down a country lane, a magical assortment of fascinating antique furniture fills an old barn. Given the array of stunning pieces that fill every nook and cranny, it’s the sort of cave you’d expect to find Aladdin pottering about in. But amidst the Dutch dressers, the French wardrobes, the Hungarian chairs and the Indian art that adorns the walls, personable Yorkshire man Rob Cain emerges from behind a stunning vintage desk sporting his trusty flat cap. Welcome to Antique Curio & Salvage Barn in Harrogate, where seeing is believing and where hours are lost, taking in the beauty of it all. The son of a French polisher, Rob grew up surrounded by antiques and developed a love for the business by watching his father painstakingly restore and polish furniture. Talking about his journey, Robert says; “I’m a second-generation French polisher by trade, growing up I restored furniture for pocket money with my dad and that’s how I learnt the trade. “In the antiques game there are no quick routes, no amount of money can set you up and you’re only as wealthy as your knowledge. “A fool and his money are easily parted in the antiques world and my dad John was the last of the old school polishers who served his time and showed me the ropes. “It was him who painstakingly taught me everything I’ve needed to know so far about furniture; what it is, how old it is and how best to save it.” It was an education that stood him in good stead and as you wander about the barn which houses his incredible collection of furniture and antique curio it is not hard to

see what a sharp eye Rob possesses. He added: “40 years on and I’m still learning, that will never stop and I travel the world discovering and learning new things on every trip. I love Hungarian and Dutch furniture and the countries I visit sourcing furniture are amazing. Hungary is a country I visit regularly and whether it’s salvage, furniture, art or fabrics, they have the lot. “I took a big trip to India last year which is another constant source of amazement to me and the pieces they have there are out of this world. I filled two containers which have all sold well.” The barn where Robert is based has evolved over the years and from his initial plan to open an antique bric-a-brac shop for people to come and rummage through, it has grown into the incredible showroom is it today. He added: “I have some good clients now especially in the bar and restaurant trade and together we take a mood board, make a plan and I deliver the goods. “The barn offers them something that little bit different and has become a showcase of ideas for everyone to come and see and get inspired by and I get as much pleasure selling a one-off item to a passerby as I do when my corporate clients fit out an entire bar. Despite travelling the world Rob says he still enjoys buying in the UK and his array of fascinating items is testament to his love of blending different styles from different periods. He said: “I’ve grown up with period furniture so I’m quite old school in many ways but I like to mix it up and it becomes very addictive seeing what’s out there. I find it very hard to say ‘no’ if somebody asks me to come and take a look at some stock as you never know what you might find.”

You can contact Rob via facebook.com/ antiquescurioandsalvagebarn or on 07718 239771 or by visiting the barn, just off the A59 Skipton to Harrogate Road HG3 2BX. beyondmags.com | 49

RELIGHT MY FIRE beyond reports on the stunning stove showroom Earth Renewables where you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome.

E

arth Renewables in Ilkley are the hot specialists in log burning and multifuel stoves. Stocking an extensive range of solutions to domestic and commercial heating, it is the place to head for your new fireplace, fire or stove. Earth Renewables offer a bespoke supply and installation service where the customers burning needs are paramount to how they carry out their services.

50 | beyond issue 51

INTERIORS

Stoves and fires By choosing a wood burning stove, you avoid the rising costs from national energy companies while heating your house with a beautifully stylish feature piece. As solid fuel burns for a long time at very high temperatures it is incredibly efficient and provides enough heat to warm the rooms surrounding the stove. Wood burning stoves also carry on emitting heat well after the fuel has burnt out making it even more cost effective than an open fire which tends to feed off the warm air in the room. For convenience and ease of use, a gas or electric appliance may be the right choice for you. Earth Renewables stock a wide range of the latest flued or flueless gas fires and stoves plus a wide range of log or coal effect electric fires which are all easily and efficiently controlled by the touch of a button.

Fireplaces and surrounds

The fireplace is the focal point of a room and can range from a simple wooden beam to a highly decorative mantel with carved and detailed corbels. Stone fireplaces in sandstone, limestone or marble are hugely popular, but they also have a wide range of different colours and textures which can be mixed with black granite or slate hearths for great contrasts. Wooden surrounds are available in various colours and styles – though you may need to put in stone ‘slips’ to protect the wood from the heat of the stove.

Why buy from Earth Renewables

From sleek modern styles to the more traditional, homely designs, their extensive collection is sure to include the perfect look for your home. Come down to their stunning showroom, which is conveniently situated on Church Street in Ilkley and have a look at the wide choices available. Offering a large array of sizes and styles to suit every room and living space, Earth Renewables offer stoves from most of the leading brands including Contura, Chesney’s, Burley, Charnwood, Jotul and Stovax. In addition to the established fireplace manufacturers they also work with many suppliers to provide bespoke fireplaces in the material, style and size you desire. Open seven days a week, our friendly and informative staff are always on hand to discuss your options and explain how to make your home a warm home. Highly trained and with years in the business, the team at Earth Renewables will be happy to find the best solution for you, at the right price. As well as stoves Earth Renewables also sell a full range of fireside accessories such as stylish companion sets and log baskets to make sure you have everything to make your home as cosy as possible.

INTERVIEW | Gino D'Acampo

56 | beyond issue 51

GINO’S YORKSHIRE ESCAPE Soon to hit the road with a live tour, beyond catches up with Italian TV chef Gino D’Acampo and discovers a man who can’t get enough of Yorkshire.

G

ino D’Acampo admits he can’t actually remember the last time he came to Leeds. It’s not that he doesn’t like the city or hasn’t visited in a while, it’s simply down to the fact he was so drunk on his last visit, he can’t remember what happened! I’m sitting with Gino talking about his chain of bars and upcoming live tour and as we discuss his restaurant in Leeds, a frown spreads over his face. “You know what?” he puzzles, “I absolutely love Leeds but we were so drunk celebrating the opening of my new restaurant when I came in December that I can’t quite remember what I did or how I actually got back to my hotel! “I do remember drinking quite a lot of champagne though and dancing on the tables but after that it all went a bit fuzzy.” A grin quickly returns to his 40-year-old face and his eyes sparkle, “You know what though,” he whispers, “I really, really like the girls oop here!” It’s instantly hard to resist Gino’s cheeky charm and is one of the reasons the nation has fallen in love with him. Women want to share a bed with him and blokes want to share a pint with him. He’s now a regular on TV appearing on shows like This Morning, Celebrity Juice, Gino’s Italian Escape and this Spring he’ll be returning to the road for another live UK tour. Throw in the fact he now has five restaurants up and down the country and it’s a wonder he manages to get a drink in let alone get legless. His successful chain of diners called Gino D’Acampo My Restaurant have proved a huge hit and in June this year he’ll be opening his fourth in Harrogate So what is the appeal of Yorkshire to the likeable TV chef who first broke onto our screens back in 2004 on Too Many Cooks as a judge?

“I have always loved northerners and I think working with Keith Lemon on Celebrity Juice has made me love them even more. “The sense of humour is fantastico and throw in the fact they know how to cook it is virtually my second home. “After the success of my restaurant in Leeds I decided that it was Harrogate’s time to get a taste of Gino. I visited Harrogate for the very first time seven years ago and fell in love with the town’s people, its elegance and its charm. It is a very cool place and I can’t wait to be a part of it. The opening of the Harrogate diner on Parliament Street follows the hugely successful launch of his restaurants in Manchester, London’s Euston station and Leeds. It will come complete with an all year roof terrace, and open just in time for summer, serving lunch until late seven days a week. Gino said: “When I am back home in Italy I love visiting cool bars and dining al fresco, Harrogate will provide the perfect setting and I can’t wait to hit the roof terrace with my guests. In the meantime fun-loving Gino will take his fans on a journey through Italy when he hits the road with his Live Italian Escape Show in which he’ll be demonstrating how to cook some of his favourite dishes from the popular TV series. It is something Gino is looking forward to especially as he will heading up north again to appear at York and Sheffield. Following the success of his 2015 tour Gino once again plans to put audience members through their paces as selected fans are invited to join him on stage. “It promises to be riotous night and especially when we get the hen parties in, anything can ‘appen!” Gino’s Live Italian Escape Show hits Sheffield Memorial and City Hall on May 2nd and York Barbican on May 4th.

BY ROYAL APPAINTMENT beyond reports on how the stunning work of one Yorkshire artist is now hanging in Royal quarters.

ART

A

Yorkshire artist has enjoyed a brush with royalty after one of her paintings was snapped up by the Duchess of Cornwall. The Duchess spotted the oil painting, Halved Avocado, while visiting the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull with the Prince of Wales in February and was so impressed she paid £300 to take it away. Talented Ilkley artist Helen Brayshaw was left stunned by the royal purchase after her work was picked out from over 300 works of art on display. “I was absolutely thrilled.” Helen said, “When I heard there was going to be a royal visit, I joked on social media that Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall might notice my little painting. The next morning I was stunned to be contacted by the gallery and told that Camilla had purchased my piece of work. “I was told her initial choice was a pencil drawing of a greyhound, but it was only on loan and not for sale. In this instance I was very happy to be second choice and I still can’t believe it.” Having traded in her full-time retail job at Chantelle Lingerie so she could pursue her love of painting, 48-year-old Helen took on part-time hours in order to study for a Masters in Fine Art at Leeds University. With fewer hours at work to contend with, Helen has been enjoying the freedom it’s given her to pursue her greatest passion and her work went down a storm at last year’s Ilkley Art Trail where all her paintings apart from the Halved Avocado was bought. But Ilkley’s loss was very much Camilla’s gain after Helen entered it into Ferens Art Gallery’s 50th Open Exhibition clebrating Hull’s year as 2017 UK City of Culture. Helen’s eye for detail has wowed art fans and her incredible still life oil paintings of fruit and vegetable now look set to reach new heights following this regal purchase. Helen said: “I don’t know where the picture will now be hanging but it is incredible to think it might have pride of place in Clarence House or Highgrove House. “Painting has always been a real passion of mine and knowing one of my pieces has found a royal home is surely any artist's crowning moment.”

Now win the Duchess’ painting We’re now giving one lucky reader the chance to win a stunning limited edition print of Halved Avocado – the painting which the Duchess of Cornwall bought. To win the print of Helen’s beautiful painting simply answer the following question: In which county is Highgrove House found? 1. Yorkshire 2. Gloucestershire 3. Essex

To enter send your names, address and phone number to Painting Comp, Beyond Magazines The Corn Mill, Railway Road, Ilkley, West Yorkshire LS29 8HT or email comp@beyondmags.com. The winner will be announced after the March 31st closing date.

ESCAPE TO

CADIZ Lynne Coates visits Cadiz and discovers one of Southern Spain’s most intriguing cities.

Hotel Atlantico

66 | beyond issue 51

niquely located, at the tip of a peninsula off the southern Andalusian coastline, Cadiz is one of Spain’s most intriguing cities, increasingly popular with tourists for its historic old city, incredibly beautiful beaches and famed gastronomy. We drove to Cadiz from Malaga airport, which took around two and half hours. The approach to the city from the coastal highway is along a dramatic, narrow peninsula with a vast industrial port on one side and golden beaches on the other. The landmark Cubanist style buildings, and the cathedral dome of the old city, can be seen in the distance. One of the oldest cities in Europe, Cadiz has an illustrious history, having been occupied by a myriad of different civilizations. It was first named Gadir, meaning enclosure, by the Phoenicians, most probably because of its unique geography surrounded by water. During the 18th century, known as the ‘golden era’, it became a great trading post for the colonies and flourished as a cosmopolitan city. During this period a variety of architectural styles can be seen in the most famous monuments, representing the many cultural influences. We were headed for the Parador de Cadiz, Hotel Atlántico, in the old city, which enjoys staggering views over the bay of Cadiz and the Atlantic Ocean. Typically, the state owned Spanish Paradors are located in restored historic buildings. However, Hotel Atlántico, is distinctly different. Incorporating wood, marble, steel, stone and glass, the building is an icon of contemporary architecture. Light fills every space and the sea forms the horizon, visible from any spot in this avant-garde style Parador. The rooms are bright, spacious and ultra-cool, complemented by generous sea-view verandas, from which you can watch dazzling sunsets over the Atlantic. The hotel has an excellent gourmet à la carte restaurant, Bahia de Cadiz, but my favourite space in this stunning hotel was La Tacita del Atlántico, a chic bar/cafe, overlooking the sea, with its enticing soft white beach-style loungers, (the kind you sink into), romantic candle lit lanterns and views to die for. I loved the heavenly chill-out background music so

much that I had to buy the CD! (Zara Home compilation). The hotel is ideally located in one of the most beautiful parts of the city, next to the elegantly laid-out Genovés urban park, within walking distance of the old city attractions and La Playa de la Caleta, one of the best-loved beaches in Cadiz. La Caleta and the boulevard that runs beside it, is reminiscent of Havana because of its Cuban-style architecture, and was the backdrop for ‘Havana’ scenes in the James Bond film, Die Another Day. Cadiz enjoys the same endless white sandy beaches as other resorts on the Costa del la Luz, La Playa de la Victoria, in the newer part of Cadiz, being the most popular with tourists. Armed with a map from the hotel we set off to explore the old city. There are some recommended walking routes which are easy to navigate, and will take you around the city from the old to the new. The four main routes are clearly indicated in different colours, green taking you on a journey through history from Phoenician Gadir, to medieval and modern Christian Cadiz. Orange takes you along the seafront to discover the city’s fortifications and castle walls that turned Cadiz into one of the most important Spanish strongholds. Purple takes in the houses and watchtowers of the shippers to the Indies during the golden age of Cadiz, and blue follows the footprints of the flourishing liberal bourgeoisie who created the 1812 constitution. Along the way, stop at one of the many tapas bars in the side streets and squares, which are reputedly among the best in Spain. Or wander around the Plaza de la Catedral, where market stalls sell everything from spices to paintings. If food is your first love, then you could skip the history and opt for a gastronomy tour! Cadiz has some exceptional restaurants, serving the very best of Andalusian local produce and, of course, a fantastic variety of fresh fish. Rick Stein recently included Cadiz in one of his ‘Long Weekend’ Cookery programmes, featuring the city’s most famous fish restaurant, El Faro, located in the Barrio de la Viña. Tapas is most definitely the way to go in Cadiz. We had probably the best tapas we have ever eaten at Lacandela. Hidden away down a back street in the old city, this tiny unpretentious bar, with its eclectic décor, serves the most innovative, delicious and creative tapas. Testament to this are the queues, which back up the street waiting for a table. Happily we had booked our seats at the bar, where we had an excellent view of all the dishes as they came out of the kitchen, so we could choose just what we fancied - and greedily kept ordering until we just couldn’t eat anymore! There are so many great tapas bars in the old city but Lacandela is definitely one to try. They say that sunsets in Cadiz are very special and should be enjoyed over something ‘sweet’, so you will find cafes full of locals in the late afternoon, enjoying delicious pastries with a glass of sweet Moscatel wine, a tradition I could quickly get used to! Cadiz as a destination is often overlooked by visitors to Spain, but it is well worth a visit and has much to offer for a city-break holiday.

FANTASY ISLAND beyond takes the high road and heads up to Scotland to discover the enchanting island of Eriska where a magical experience, and the occasional otter, awaits all who visit.

A

pparently, if you’re very lucky, like lottery-win lucky, you might spot a golden eagle up on the Isle of Eriska, or much more likely an otter. So, not wanting to appear greedy, as the journey ever northward began and troubles were packed away, we decided that we’d be more than happy with an otter and anyway, the hotel on Eriska has more than an abundance of wildlife to offer as its five shiny stars suggest. There would be wine to drink and sofas to lounge on. At the mouth of Loch Creran, only a few miles from Oban, the Isle of Eriska is poised between land and loch and is accessed via a charming, rustic bridge. Avid Instagrammers would have a field day. It’s an actual little island, all 350 acres of it and crossing the bridge at dusk to encounter the twinkling hotel lights seemed like the perfect time to arrive. There’s something very Jane Austen about pulling up onto a sweeping gravelled driveway in front of a beautiful 19th century

68 | beyond issue 51

mansion, less so our cumbersome, overexcited disembarkment, with pup in tow, but if our welcome party witnessed our clumsy entrance into the glorious oak panelled hall, they expressed nothing but a hearty, warm Scottish welcome. Our room was in the main hotel, known as The Big House, and was a huge, luxurious suite with a sumptuous seating area, gleaming bathroom, Molton Brown toiletries and stunning views across the perfectly manicured croquet lawn – a huge contrast to the rugged mixed woodland that lies beyond. There are other types of self-catering accommodation available on the island, with outdoor hot tubs, making it a great choice for get-togethers or celebrations with family and friends. The hotel restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in September 2016 for the third year running which makes deciding where to eat at Eriska a no-brainer. We ate from the four-course dinner menu, like kings.

TRAVEL

The menu changes on a daily basis and offers a diverse selection of fresh and seasonal produce. We dined on locally sourced fish, incredible venison carpaccio, delicious seasonal vegetables and mouth-watering desserts with an exquisite 2009 Lebanese Chateau Musar as suggested by our knowledgable and very patient waiter. The cheese trolley at the hotel is legendary and as it was wheeled towards us weighed down by its tantalising selection of over 40 varieties, it was impossible to turn away. After such a decadent feast, partaking in a little activity the next day seemed advisable and at Eriska, there’s no shortage of things to do. Clay pigeon shooting, archery, fishing, croquet on the lawn, and a six-hole golf course are just some of the attractions on offer. There’s even an indoor sports hall for the dedicated sports buff. All very impressive but, true to the beyond mandate, we opted for none of the above and instead went for a long walk in search of an otter, followed by a relaxing treatment in the Stables spa. The walk along seaweed-strewn beaches encircling the island was exhilarating and the massage at the spa, indulgent and expertly delivered. We topped it off with a light bite at the Deck restaurant above the spa area, less formal than the main restaurant but offering tempting dishes to select from. The Isle of Eriska is truly beautiful. The west

highland scenery is breathtaking and the hotel itself is elegant and welcoming with its log fires and deep sofas. It has weight and gravitas but there is no pomp and ceremony here. This is largely down to the hotel team who are attentive without being overbearing, sharing knowledge and advice about everything from the food and wine selection to walking trails, activities and obviously, otter spotting. At Eriska they also leave out wee treats to entice the habitually anti-social badgers to dine in the grounds and provide another perfect photo opportunity for guests. There’s a toasty hot water bottle left in your bed as part of the nightly turn down service and you only have to think about ordering afternoon tea and by their powers of telepathy, it is delivered to your chosen spot. But above all, you get a real sense that nothing is too much trouble. They want you to love Eriska and seem quietly confident that you will. This time round we didn’t see an otter, they must have heard we were coming and decided to go off and play with the Golden Eagles. But what we did see of Eriska, we loved. The setting, the hotel itself, the food and the very professional and attentive team who made our stay there a truly memorable one. I’m afraid dear Eriska, we will be back. Like it or not.

FAKE THAT James Austin of law firm LCF Barber Titleys, talks about social media and the workplace

S

ocial media has become a part of most of our lives. No longer is it just teenagers who are fixed to their phones, tablets or laptops scrolling through Facebook. Many of us find ourselves spending spare moments looking at LinkedIn or passing comment on someone’s “tweets”. Over the last few weeks it’s come to light that many people even use social media as their only means of reviewing the news and there has been concern that the often unregulated world of social media is a hot bed of “fake news”.

What has this got to do with life in your work place?

Well sometimes employees’ post comments, photos and/or videos on social media which reveal misconduct at work. For example, the supermarket employee who posted a video of colleagues hitting each other with plastic bags instead of working. Sometimes employees express views which their employer does not share or indeed wish to be associated with. For example the employee who posted that hitting her customers over the head would make her happy or the employee who posted a query and derogatory comment on social media about the numerous sexual partners of a named work colleague. And sometimes they say unpleasant things about their employer or its products. For example, the employee who referred to his workplace as “Dante’s Inferno”. To some of you these comments may seem innocuous. Others might feel that you’re entitled to say what you like on social media and that it’s no different to making a comment to your friends in the pub. It is different though, because unlike most throw away comments made after a few drinks, a post on social media can be viewed by lots of people, some of whom may even comment on it, and/or draw other people’s attention to it. Employers tend to take a dim view of comments like the examples above. The employees in those cases were dismissed. Employment Tribunals decide whether such dismissals are fair on the individual facts of each case. Things which can impact on the decision include whether: the employer was easily identifiable; the post was seen by many people; and/or whether the employer has a policy setting out what is to be considered unacceptable use of social media.

Lessons to learn.

• Well, if you’re an employee: think twice before posting comments about colleagues, customers or your employer on social media and remove any reference to your employer from your profile, unless it needs to be there. Perhaps just stick to reading the fake news others post. • If you’re an employer: make sure you have the appropriate policies in place telling employees clearly what amounts to unacceptable use of social media, and make sure they’re aware of the policies.

POWERING AHEAD In a day and age when there is still so much economic uncertainty following Brexit and Trump, one Yorkshire business is going from strength to strength. beyond reports on the rise of Halifax-based Northern Powerhouse Developments who are having a positive impact on the UK hotel and leisure industry.

hen the UK voted to pull out of Europe last year, many feared it would be the start of another recession and the country would be plunged into economic crisis. Thankfully there were others who kept their heads and ploughed on defiantly. One such business is Yorkshire-based Northern Powerhouse Developments, who in the space of 12 months have proved just how far you can go with a solid business plan and steely determination. Specialising in the development, sale and management of properties within the hotel and leisure sectors, the Yorkshire company has seen their portfolio of hotels grow significantly since the start of 2016. It all adds up to a hugely successful year for NPD and their charismatic chairman Gavin Woodhouse who has created a winning formula that involves the acquisition of hotels, the sale of rooms to investors, refurbishment and then management of each property. To date NPD have turned around the fortunes of 10 hotels in popular seaside resorts and tourist destinations across the country after selling rooms within them to an international market. Having created five different hotel collections – Manor, Premier, Boutique, Classic and Business – which all appeal to a different audience, NPD’s management group Giant Hospitality are then brought in to run the hotels which are situated in clusters of threes and fours. The close proximity of each hotel within a cluster allows operations to be centralised thus reducing costs by distributing roles and services such as management, laundry, staff and reservations across the entire group. 72 | beyond issue 51

Tenby

Talking about the business Gavin said: “Despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and Trump, confidence in the UK market is still very strong and this has been illustrated by the high number of people from both home and abroad looking to buy here. “Identifying properties in locations which have a strong historic tourism performance but which may have experienced a downturn in visitor numbers due to a lack of investment and modern facilities has enabled us to acquire at low-entry levels and then demonstrate long-term capital appreciation for investors. “After acquiring hotels we are able to offer private purchasers the opportunity to buy rooms, multiple rooms or whole developments within a given project. Once we have sold the rooms we then renovate the properties and run the hotels ourselves ensuring each investor receives an annual return or rent on their purchase for the next 10 years.” NPD’s successful business model was created following the economic downturn at the depth of the recession when developers were forced to look for alternatives to typical institutional funding options. The natural step was to look to the private market where sophisticated, high and ultra-high net-worth individuals or businesses were looking to purchase in the buy-to-let sector to find an alternative, safe and tangible solution to safeguard their money. With no bank encumbrances involved NPD’s streamlined approach has proven paramount to their high standards of delivery and opened the door for those looking for alternative opportunities. To add even greater weight to the business NPD have also just appointed the highly respected leisure boss Peter Moore OBE to their board.

Caer Rhun Hall

As the man who was responsible for turning round the fortunes of Alton Towers and then went on to launch Center Parc in the UK, his arrival shows just how far NPD have come in such a short space of time. Moore has been brought in to help oversee NPD’s latest project, Afan Valley Adventure Resort - a stunning 450 acre activity park in south Wales. Billed as the UK's ultimate lifestyle experience, the resort will be home to an incredible adventure complex where a wealth of breathtaking and exhilarating activities awaits guest. Top adventurer Bear Grylls has already signed up to bring his Survival Academy to the resort and a whole host of international brands are set to follow suit. INTERVIEW | Nicola Adams

I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE LEEDS SHOW AND THE LEEDS FANS

74 | beyond issue 51

She’s conquered the world of amateur boxing and bagged every title going. Now the Leeds boxer, Nicola Adams has her eyes on a new prize as she bids farewell to Great Britain’s Olympic boxing programme to join the ranks of the pros. words | Claire Schofield pics | Rex Features

W

hen you think of boxing legends, the likes of Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Evandeer Holyfield are names which tend to spring to mind. Brutal and often bloody, boxing has long been thought of as a man’s game, yet Nicola Adams has proved that no sport is too tough for a woman and her name is now firmly engraved alongside the greats. During her years in the amateur game, Adams dominated the sport. She ruthlessly fought her way to World, Commonwealth, European and Olympic golds, and firmly cemented her place in history after becoming the first British boxer to retain an Olympic title in 92 years at the Rio Games last year. Proudly sitting at the top of her sport, you’d think the 34-year-old might be ready to sit back and take some time out, knowing she’s claimed every major title going. But always eager to take on a challenge, Adams made the bold move to ditch the GB Boxing programme in favour of turning professional in a quest to become the greatest female boxer the world has ever seen. “It was a really difficult decision,” she explains. “There was the option of becoming a triple Olympic champion, maybe pursuing a full time acting career, or turning pro, and I decided to do the latter. I wanted a new challenge; I want to be a world champion and follow in the footsteps of my hero, Muhammad Ali, and do as he did.” “From the moment I won Olympic gold, I’ve been thinking about it and I have no regrets. I’ve found a great team in Frank Warren, Box Nation and BT Sport. They believe in my dream, they believe in what I can do and they want to make a world champion out of me. To emulate my hero would be absolutely amazing – another dream come true!” Along with another major title to add

to her already impressive collection, the Leeds-born flyweight hopes the move will help to raise the profile of women’s boxing, pledging to take the sport to new levels. “I definitely think I can raise the game of women’s boxing, in terms of profile and attendance,” she says. “I want to take it to another level and show the world what women’s boxing is all about.” Of course the move into the professional field hasn’t stopped the ambitious boxer from ruling out the possibility of challenging for that coveted triple Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, but for now her focus is dedicated to new ventures, with an aim to be named world champion as early as next year. And while she will have to adjust to the changes of the professional game, which will see her faced with an increased number of rounds and no head guard for protection, Adams remains unwaveringly confident. “I think the target of being world champion next year is quite realistic; I’ve had over 200 amateur fights, I just need to adapt to the time of the rounds and settle in my feet to pack more power in my punches and I think after I’ve got that, I’m ready to take on a world champ and bring a belt home to Leeds,” she says. “Of course, there’s no head guard in pro boxing, but I think that’s going to be a bonus. It creates a bigger target so it will be a lot easier to not only see the shots coming, but to move out of the way of them as well. “It’s still the same ring; you have judges, you have an opponent, two arms, two legs. It can’t be that much different from the amateurs,” she laughs. “I’m excited and looking forward to it.” She will make her debut fight in Manchester on April 8th before a bout in her home city at Leeds’ First Direct Arena on May 13th, alongside fellow Leeds boxer Josh Warrington – her first fight at home in 13 years.

“I can’t wait for the Leeds show and the Leeds fans,” she beams. “It’s going to be exiting, I can see that already, and I’m sure the atmosphere in the arena is going to replicate the noise of the Games so I’m really looking forward to it. “It’s nice to be able to come back for a real homecoming and it’s definitely exciting to be sharing the bill with Josh. I remember him boxing when he was about six years old – I used to beat him up!” she laughs. “We go back a long way and it's nice nice to see where we are today; we’ve been training and competing hard, and doing really well for the sport. Now we’re able to come together and compete on the same bill in Leeds. It’s going to be a sell out!” Of course while the prospect of fighting in front of a home crowd may give her an almighty boost, Adams does have to contend with the pressures of heading into the pro ranks as the number one person to beat. The huge expectations weigh heavily on her shoulders, but she maintains the pressure of being at the top only adds to her performance and she’s more than ready to take on the tough fight. “I love the pressure,” she says. “Being number one for four years is hard. Everybody wants to be Olympic champion, everybody wants that gold medal, so you know everybody is coming for you. It’s a lot of pressure, but I take it in my stride. I train hard, listen to my coaches, listen to the tactics and I don’t cut any corners. “I have to go in there with my A-game every time and give 110% and that’s exactly what I intend to do in the pros as well. I’ll be giving everything I’ve got – I know everybody wants to beat me, but they’ve got to get in the ring and put their money where their mouth is, because I’m ready.”

INTERVIEW | Jonny MarcusBrownlee Levine

OUT OF THE SHADOW 80 | beyond issue 51

This year Yorkshire triathlon star Jonny Brownlee is determined to step out of his sibling’s shadow and steal the number one spot as he sets his sights on world title success in 2017.

2

016 was a year of incredible highs and lows for triathlete Jonny Brownlee. Having spent the past four years swimming, cycling and running hard in a quest for Olympic glory, the highly anticipated race on the sunny shores of Copacabana beach in Rio went without a hitch and he stormed his way to a silver medal, finishing just behind his older brother and bettering his bronze from London 2012. It was a crowning moment for the Yorkshire brothers as they stood side by side on the ultimate sporting podium and with the final of the ITU World Triathlon Series still to come, Jonny was hoping to be crowned world champion to complete a truly spectacular season. Leading the grand final race in Cozumel with the coveted title well within his reach, an exhausted Jonny faltered just 100m from the line and began to collapse from the heat. Alistair famously came to his aid and dragged him across the finish line, leaving him runner-up and a devastating four points short of world title victory. The images of the brothers in arms made headlines across the world and much to Jonny’s dismay, the event has come to be more well-known than his incredible successes in the sport. But the unfortunate end to last year’s season has only made the younger Brownlee more determined to come back fighting and he vows to make the headlines for all the right reasons this year, as he eyes world success. “The aim is very much to become world champion in 2017,” he says. “I will be training hard and I hope to compete in most of the races in the series. To become world champion you have to compete in six of the nine events and one of these has to be the grand final, so realistically I’ll need to make the podium in five of them to take the title.” “Hopefully by not having the Olympics to worry about, I’ll be able to focus more on the series and I’ll definitely be racing in the events on the Gold Coast and of course in Leeds.” With the ITU World Series due to kick off in Abu Dhabi on March 3, Jonny has been busy putting in the gruelling hours of training, as he readies himself to take on the arduous journey to the number one spot, resolutely vowing not to repeat the events of that now infamous race in Cozumel. “It has definitely made me more determined to become world champion because I felt like I lost the championship last year,” he explains. “I feel like I’ve got a lot to prove after what happened in Cozumel and a lot of unfinished business in the sport. I’ve done a lot of tests since then to learn how to prepare better in the heat. Now I have a far better strategy for tackling hot races, so I’ve definitely learned from it and I can’t wait to be on a start line ready to race again.” With older brother Alistair expected to take some time

out from Olympic distances to focus on longer races, including Ironman competitions and marathons, Jonny may find himself in the rather unfamiliar position of racing without his brother by his side. “It will be strange not having him there next to me,” he admits. “It made the whole journey a lot easier, but it might force me to look at new methods of training and realise what’s best for me. “I will still have the same strategy in competition, which is to race as aggressively as possible. I really enjoy the hard courses where you’re tested across all three disciplines, so I’m looking forward to Stockholm and especially Leeds.” Eager to prove he is a formidable opponent in his own right, Jonny is keen to embrace racing without Alistair, but admits their brotherly competitiveness and training together has been the key to his success. “Having Alistair around has made me very used to a competitive environment and it’s made me challenge myself,” he says. “Alistair doesn’t have any weaknesses, so he’s very hard to beat, but we’ve learnt to control our competitiveness in training and we work well together in hard sessions. “We were always more competitive away from training really. I remember hitting Alistair over the head with a golf club when we were younger,” he laughs. “He must have been beating me!” Of course while Jonny may be gunning for the world title alone this year, the pair will both be back in action when the series comes to their home city of Leeds on June 10th and 11th. Organised this year by British Triathlon, it promises to be a world class event which will see the elite of the sport battle it out on the Brownlee’s home turf, a prospect the 26-year-old is particularly looking forward to. A devoutly proud Yorkshireman – who admits to taking a slice of home with him when competing abroad in the form of Yorkshire tea bags – Jonny is keen to beat the field and he’s confident he can make the race his own with the support of the Yorkshire crowd. “The race in Leeds last year was incredible; it was the best triathlon I’ve ever competed in. I was a massively proud Yorkshireman that day,” he enthuses. “We always have amazing support for events in Yorkshire – just look at the Tour de France – and it was incredible competing in front of such big crowds. “We had an input into the design of the race last year and we wanted to make it a hard course. We wanted a hill out of the water and the city centre loop to be as technical as possible, as this suited our strengths. Competing again in front of a home crowd will definitely spur me on, so the Leeds leg will be very important and play a significant part in me becoming world champion.”
