Long or Short, Carry-on Essentials Ease the Flight

Carry-on Essentials LONG OR SHORT, EASE THE FLIGHT

While you may be thrilled to be in Amsterdam, it’s more than a bit irksome that your luggage is still at Paris Orly airport.

Makes what you’ve tucked into your backpack or tote all that more important. So clean underwear (preferably a total change of clothing) should be first on your list of must-have carry-on items. Fingers crossed that your checked baggage accompanies you to your destination, but be prepared whether your flight is long or short. While you may opt for an airplaneapproved suitcase (22” by 14” by 9”) to stow in the upper bin, these can be hard to get in and out of. That one personal item — such as a laptop bag, purse, briefcase, beach bag — allows easier access for essentials. Reminder: Containers of liquid, paste, aerosol, gel or cream normally can be no larger than 3.4 ounces. • Daily medication • Phone/phone charger • Travel pillow • Roll-on deodorant • Toothbrush, toothpaste • Eye mask • Ear plugs • Sweater, infinity or other type of travel wrap (those airplane cabins can get downright chilly) • Compression socks (especially necessary for flights 4 hours or longer) • Snacks (such TSA approved goodies as trail mix, beef jerky, protein bars, cheese and crackers) • Collapsible water bottle • Eye cream, lip balm, moisturizer • Sunglasses • Headphones • Cleansing wipes • Hand sanitizer • Dry shampoo • E-reader, tablet • ID, passport, visa • Travel documents, itineraries • Cash and bank cards (consider a hidden money belt)

Leave these at home: • Aerosol insecticide • Black jacks nunchucks, or the like • Instruments containing magnets • Toy/replica guns

You are allowed to pack antlers, however. But double check with the airline … While a baseball bat is out, a baseball, basketball, soccer ball, football and bowling ball are in. And spurs and holiday lights are totally allowed (thank goodness).

If considering flying with something not mentioned, it's always a good idea to check your airline’s website or the TSA website for what’s allowable for carry-on or checked baggage.
