When selecting window coverings for your house you must keep two aspects in mind: a room’s natural lighting and intended use. doing and how much protection they’ll need from heat and glare. Spending just a little bit of time assessing this will ensure your home has the level of comfort and style you deserve. A window’s orientation will affect the intensity of the sunlight coming through it. Your northfacing windows rarely will get the brunt of the intense Arizona sun, but any others will need shading at some point during the day — east windows from sunrise to mid-morning, south windows from late morning to midafternoon and western ones from midafternoon to sunset. LIVING ROOM Your living room likely will have the largest windows in your home so shading the room from excess sun and heat will be especially important.

Vertical blinds and shutters can easily be adjusted for different light levels and privacy needs, while drapes piling generously onto the floor are the epitome of luxury and can be layered with lighter-weight treatments to set any mood.

BEDROOM This is where you’ll want to keep all types of disturbances to a minimum, so lined drapes or curtains with blackout and noise-control properties are usually your best bet here.

If those aren’t what you want or simply not practical, Roman shades can be ordered in textures from flimsy to bulletproof to provide the protection you need and can be easily opened and closed with a dramatic sweep of your arm.

KITCHEN You’ll want to maximize natural lighting here while also choosing coverings that won’t be ruined by heat or humidity.

Faux wood blinds and shutters are elegant choices that will withstand these adverse conditions, while sheer shades put an enticing filter on sunlight that makes it that much easier to walk in and get to work.

Cellular shades have a similar effect with far superior insulation ability for energy conservation.
