Probiotics Can Help Dental Patients

RENEW Probiotics CAN HELP Dental Patients

by Dr. Anson Hooper, DDS, Hooper Family Dental

As a health care provider and with COVID-19 in the not-so-distant past, immune system health is likely at the forefront of most of our minds.

As we care for our health, it becomes increasingly important that we know what medication we are putting into our bodies, why we are taking it, and how we can best combat and alleviate known side effects.

It’s not a secret that as a dental health care provider, I see and treat everything from sinus infections to yeast infections. Antibiotics and antifungals are often the drugs of choice to mitigate these infections.

While the use of these medications to target oral conditions is indicated, they have a systemic effect and it’s important that patients treat those. One of the ways we mitigate the side effects of the medications is with the use of probiotics, which we highly recommend for every patient taking an oral antibiotic.

Antibiotics/antifungals in dentistry are prescribed to treat: *Periodontal infection

*Pulpal infection

*Abscess

*Implant placement

*Fungal infections

*Prophylaxis

These are just some of the uses of antibiotics for dental-related treatment. Prophylactic use of antibiotics prior to dentalrelated treatment also is indicated at a different dose for those with prior cardiac issues, are immunocompromised and those with artificial joints.

While we all deserve the best health care and treatment available, it’s important to understand that we differ in many ways as individuals and require different care. Learn about what is best for you. Our immune system plays a vital role in our well-being.
