what is Social Networking
?
Social Networking is an online communication tool that allows people to share ideas and creations with others of similar interests. You can share pictures, music, videos, and more depending on which social networking site you use. When used properly, social networking can be a great tool. It starts conversations, keeps you connected to friends in other places, and exposes your mind to many new ideas. Best of all, it’s a place for you to express yourself creatively.

who uses social networking
Billions of people use it all around the world. For many companies and organizations, social networking has become a great promotional tool for products and services. Most of these sites don’t allow anyone under 13 years old to sign up. Unfortunately, many people lie about their age just to get in. Lying about your age opens yourself up to potential harm. Be honest, and wait until you are at least 13 to use social networking sites.

safety tips passwords Be sure to choose a password that is hard to guess. Use a combination of letters and numbers.
SIGN OUT It’s a good idea to sign out of your account when using someone else’s computer.
think before posting Never share anything online that you don’t want to be public. Even with privacy features, it’s not 100% guaranteed that others can’t view your profile. If you wouldn’t hold it up in front of your class, don’t post it on your site.
Keep your personal info personal Always leave your birth year, address, phone number, and any other personal information off your profile. This helps avoid the possibility of identity theft.
location, location, location Sometimes these sites have your posts set to automatically select your location. Turn it off! If you want your friends to know where you are, call or text them. More tips on back
Stranger danger Be careful who you interact with online. People are not always who they say they are. If you meet someone online, don’t meet them in person UNLESS you are accompanied by a guardian. If you ever feel uncomfortable with someone you are talking to on a network, tell a parent or guardian.
be kind Sometimes it’s easier to say how you feel about something or someone by typing it out. Don’t use your social site to gossip or vent about other people. If someone posts something unkind about you, be careful how you respond. This is not a private conversation. Be courteous, polite, and respect others.
take a break It’s pretty easy to get lost in social networking sites. Don’t let it soak up all of your free time. Don’t forget that you can always meet up with friends in person.
Have fun & be safe Many social networking sites are entertaining and educational when used properly. Have fun with them and always remember to be safe.
