21C Museum Hotel- Fayetteville, AR

Objective: Analyze the prototype for an emerging type, the art hotel, as represented by the 21c Museum Hotel in Bentonville. This project was proposed for a site in Fayetteville located on Dickson street between Block Ave. and Church St. Approach: The prototype developed aimed to address the urban edge of the street and its context by creating porch-like spaces that provide users a variety of options for engaging the public edge. These indoor-outdoor spatial experiences occur throughout the project. The large semi-private terrace on the 3rd floor as well as the roof terrace implement gardens that also provide a farm-to-table aesthetic for the hotel’s restaurants while also connecting to the agriculture context of Arkansas. 1

Austin-novation Environmental Resource and Learning Center- Austin, TX

Objective: To develop comprehensive strategies for an urban response, and address issues associated with placing a contemporary building within an existing urban fabric. The project proposed is an environmental learning whose site position serves as mediator between the natural and urban environment of Cesar Chavez and Nueces Streets. Approach: In this proposal, site and climate factors influenced its design. A creek west of the site leads to the Colorado River at the south while the urban forest of the city is fixed at its north and west.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between a building and the city, through creation of urban spatial conditions that occur between inside and outside, public and private, and building and street. A writers’ museum is proposed for a site on Printers Row Chicago. Approach: With the intent to create new kinds of public space, the ground floor is dedicated as a flexible outdoor plaza that engages the public realm of the city. During colder months, the space will normally be used as a lobby and café space. During the warmer months, the glass is retracted to transform the space into a public plaza. This flexible space could host events such as book signings and readings, book fairs, free concerts, and the annual Printer’s Row Literary Fest. 21

Maison Recette- Johnson, AR

Objective: Propose a single-family home for a site in Johnson, Arkansas using individually assigned siting conditions. Approach: In meeting the specified project requirement of an ‘IN’ ground condition, the existing barn foundation, found on site, became the location for the proposed house. The concrete walls, nestle into the sloping ground creating a sense of enclosure and hiding, which was ideal for the private spaces of the house, while the living spaces of the house are more visible as it seemingly hovers above the ground.

The New Chicago Opera House- Chicago, IL

Objective: To design a project both flexible and inflexible, both tightly and loosely defined, The New Chicago Opera House. The recently completed Winspear Opera in Dallas, Texas was used as a model because of it’s perfected acoustics achieved by the idealized shoebox shape. The architecture of this type then is conceived as an inflexible object nested within a flexible envelope. Approach: The formal operations, ‘fold’ and ‘lift’, studied in precedent theaters, Starlight theatre (IL) and Wyly theatre (TX), were used to develop a ribbon-like concept whose folds become a part of the landscape as it rises and falls forming processional paths of entry to the building. 35
