Download Case Project 4-1: Training a New Vice President in Using Mac OS X Folders A new vice president has just been hired and she is not familiar with Macintosh computers. You have been asked to provide her with a set of simple written instructions about how to access the documents in the home folder, which were left by her predecessor. Also, provide instructions about how to create a new folder in Mac OS X. Note that both the predecessor and the new vice president are using the same user account name, which is VP Financials. Finally, the vice president needs your advice for creating a folder structure under her home folder. She wants a separate location for each of the following:     

Rulings by the board of directors Financial spreadsheets Word-processed documents that pertain to her division Word-processed documents that relate to senior management activities Marketing reports Case Project 4-2: Determining Whether a File System is Mounted for a DVD/CD-ROM Drive An inventory specialist in the Manufacturing and Operations Department needs to determine what file systems are mounted on his computer, because he is not sure that the DVD/CD-ROM drive is properly mounted. Explain the steps he should use to determine the mounted file systems, and also note which file system should be mounted for the DVD/CD-ROM. Case Project 4-3: Choosing a File System for Windows 7 A new computer has just been purchased for the accounting manager. The company purchased the computer without an operating system, because they already have extra licensed copies of Windows 7 They ask you to set up the computer. What Windows 7 file system do you implement, recognizing that the accounting manager needs a system that can be secure? Explain your decision and briefly discuss the advantages of this file system. Also, the accounting manager asks you to set up a preliminary folder structure to contain:    

Accounting reports Word-processed documents Department memos Personnel evaluations Explain where you would set up this folder structure and show how you would name the new folders. Case Project 4-4: The Advantages of the Windows Server 2008 File System Tasty Freeze has just hired a new person who is training to be a Windows server administrator. She has worked with computers in many capacities, but has never managed Windows Server 2008 server. You are asked to train her, and as part of the orientation to Windows Server 2008, you decide to give her a background in the advantages of its file system. Create a short report that you can give her that summarizes the advantages you discuss in your training. Case Project 4-5: Repairing a File Problem The Windows Vista computer used by a copywriter in the Marketing Department is experiencing some problems. Each time the copywriter accesses certain files, he sees an error message. He is


concerned because these are files to be used for an upcoming catalog that will go into print soon. Explain the steps to take in order to fix these files. Case Project 5-1: Determining Preliminary Steps The master distribution center in Bend, Oregon, has 42 people, including nine Windows 2000 users, 22 people using Windows XP Professional, and 11 people using Windows Vista Business Edition. The distribution center is slated to upgrade its computers to Windows 7 Professional. What preliminary steps should be taken before starting the upgrades on these computers? In general, are there any problems involved in upgrading to Windows 7 from each of these operating systems? Case Project 5-2: Deciding to Upgrade or Not? The distribution center's 9 people who are using Windows 2000 are all certain they need to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional to perform their work. However, the 33 people in the distribution center who are running Windows XP Professional and Vista Business Edition are currently able to use all software, such as office software, customized distribution software, and inventory software that is integrated with the distribution software They are resisting the upgrade to Windows 7 Professional, and the distribution manager asks for your opinion about whether or not to upgrade these computers. Should they upgrade from Windows XP and Vista to Windows 7? Case Project 5-3: Installing Windows 7 After considering the issues in Case Project 5-2, management has decided that the distribution center is going ahead with replacing the computers running Windows 2000 and XP, purchasing new machines and Windows 7. The Windows Vista users already have computers that can run Windows 7 for a possible upgrade. The user support person for the distribution center has not performed an installation for Windows 7. Tell her generally what to expect when performing this installation. Case Project 5-4: Moving to Windows Server 2008 R2 The IT Department already has been testing Windows Server 2008 R2, and some time ago purchased licenses to convert all of its Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition servers to Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition. Explain the general process it must follow to convert to Windows Server 2008 R2. Case Project 5-5: Upgrading Mac OS X Tiger The Marketing Department strictly uses computers running Mac OS X Tiger, and plans to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. What steps must it follow for the upgrade?
