CIT 140 WORKSHOP 4.4 CASE PROJECT FOUR
Download Case Project 8-1 Several members of the company have learned that ADSL is now available through a local telecommunications company. Cable modem access is also available. Compare these two alternatives and prepare a report for the company’s management so they can consider these as replacements for analog modem access. Case Project 8-2 The owner of the company uses Red Hat Linux on his workstation. He wants to check the serial port speed of his internal modem. Explain how he can check the speed. \ Case Project 8-3 Wilderness Supply has a contract with a two-person research team in Alaska that field tests new clothing and equipment. The research team has access to a telephone line, but the noise problems are so severe on that line into their country residence that often they cannot use it to access the Internet. What is another alternative they can use to quickly exchange information via computers with the Wilderness Supply home office? Briefly describe the alternative you recommend along with the equipment that is necessary. Case Project 8-4 Four of the managers have just gotten MAC OS X computers. Create a short document that describes how to set up the internal modems for Internet access. Case Project 8-5 One week ago, a building contractor was working in the area of the Wilderness Supply offices and disrupted telephone service with his backhoe, because the telephone lines are buried underground. Service has been restored, but ever since the mishap, all of Wilderness Supply’s modem users have reported very slow access. The telephone company would like documentation of the access speed, because the telephone company believes that all problems with damaged lines have already been addressed. What do you recommend to Wilderness Supply as a way to demonstrate to the telephone company that there is still a problem? Case Project 10-1: Considering the Merits of Using Active Directory In the past, the building was only equipped with one Windows Server 2003. Now that they have five Windows Server 2008 R2 servers, the IT support group is considering whether or not to install Active Directory. What advantages does Active Directory offer for managing user accounts? Case Project 10-3: User Account Security for the Windows Server 2008 R2 Security was lax on the previous servers, so that some users employed passwords and some did not. The new Windows Server 2008 R2 server is connected to the Internet, and so there must be better security associated with user accounts. What options can be used for user account security and what tool can be used to configure these options? Case Project 10-4: Reconsidering Root Account Access for Red Hat Linux Users Because there are three around-the-clock shifts of workers, all of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux computers on the manufacturing floor are shared by three people. In the past, they have all used the root accounts to access these computers, but there have been problems with unexpected changes to computer setups and to files. Also, this has meant that no single user could secure specific files only for his or her use. What general suggestions do you have for doing things differently? Also, what tools do you recommend using to accomplish your suggestions? Case Project 10-5: Enabling Sharing in Mac OS X
An inventory specialist has a new printer that is to be shared through the network with all other inventory users. Explain the steps she should take to enable sharing of this printer after it is connected and installed.
