|Keeping Rainforest Standing|

B

y translating the layers of canapy of rainforest strata into design, this rainforest research center is designed to have layers of roof similar to the layers of canopy in rainforest. The canopy layer in rainforest are thick and block almost 90% of direct sunlight from penetrating through the rainforest, keeping the forest floor from getting too much of sunlight exposure, hence humid and cool all year long.

The building is designed to reduce penetration of direct sunlight on longer facade hence reduce indoor heat gain. Sunshading devices such as horizontal and vertical louvres are introduced to make sure no excessive amount of direct sunlight from entering the indoor space.

Max wind speed recorded in April and October due to monsoon season. Prevailing wind comes from northeast and southwest. Wind is block by the hills as the site is located at valley; opening are facing to these direction so to receive wind during day time and night.

e site is accessible by East-West Th Highway, before entering Banding Island by the brigde. The punch in point to the site could be shared with the existing hotel. Carpark proposed near by the main entrance due to the slope on the site is not suitable to build any road for cars.

Located on the lake in the hills is definitely an advantage for the site. Hotel rooms facing lake and hill are close to the nature and providing pleasure vivid image of nature. The chalets are arranged randomly instead of in a row, so that every chalet will have unique view.

Although there are no heavy vehicular flow around the site, but due to the silent atmoshpere, the noise can be clearly heard once there are vehicles passed by. Site planning should be focus on the other side which have a distance from the bridge.

elum-Temenggor is believed to have been in existence for over 130 million years making it one of the world’s oldest rainforests, older than both the Amazon and the Congo. However, despite of the richness of biodiversity in the rainforest compound, human activity is causing the rainforest to depreciate. Although it had been declared as state park, but deforestration caused by illegal logging in that area is still a major problem that destroying the rainforest, harming both the flora and fauna.

Each of the building components is actually correspondance to a layer of Rainforest with similar function and purpose.

Ro o f | Upper or Emergent Canopy

The Emergent layer consists of the very tallest trees that break through the Canopy layer and grow to great heights. Many trees here have umbrellashaped treetops.

Lo u v r es | Main Canopy

The Canopy is a thick layer of trees towering overhead, anywhere from 25m to 30m feet above the ground. Because the branches are located so close together, animals find it easy to travel in this level by gliding or hopping from branch to branch.

Facad e & O p e n i n g | Understorey

These layers are made up of mostly smaller trees and vines. Young trees are also found in the Understorey.Birds and bats can fly more freely through the open spaces

Flo o r | Forest Floor

The canopy layer above block almost 90% of direct sunlight from penetrating through the rainforest, keeping the forest floor from getting too much of sunlight exposure, hence humid and cool all year long.

|Evolutionability|

T

he vision of an ‘evolutionable development’ is the development towards a society that neither wastes nor destroys its means of existence. The use of raw materials (resources) and the stress on ecosystems should not go beyond the capacity of rehabilitation so that future generations will find a reasonably intact environment with enough resources, which enables them to live in a same or better wealth than we do today. volutionable development = Permanent structure + Flexible building component. Changeable building purpose for unforeseen future development.

|No Single Home is Alike|

I

nspired by the endless possibilities of toy-block creations, we envision a similar Home building where basic Home components of Living, Dining, Bedroom, Kitchen, Bathroom, Porch and Stairs are pre-defined. Every single component is expandable, according to various need and lifestyle. Highly adaptable yet efficient within an overall grid.

| Misconception House v.s. Home

A

house is a place which people live and reside, enclosed with four walls and a roof over. A home is not just a house, but a special place in everyone’s heart. Home is where you are most comfortable and feels right to you. It embodies your unique personality, your family lifestyle and your way of living. Once your home fits your ideals ; comfort, joy, laughter and warmth will prevail.

| Incompatibility of Mass Housing to Owners’ Needs

very homeowner is unique individual with varying personality, lifestyle and culture. Hence, it’s only natural that every home is as unique as the individual. Yet, Modern Mass Housing provides one design layout to fit infinite types of homeowners. How will that ever deliver what every homeowner wants?

L

ISTEN TO THE NEEDS | In the DIY design process, housing can expand according to the needs and culture of the community. This improves ideal living conditions. At the same time, the collaboration between homeowners and Architect keeps the profession relevant and effective.

E

FFECTIVE FLEXIBILITY | Due to the modular nature of design, components are easily added, stacked on and modified to suit the changing circumstances of housing crises ranging from war-torn refugee housing to fast housing solution catering to homes damaged in natural disaster.

G Unique Owver Personality Multiple Home Requirement

ENUS LOCI | Homeowners are in-tuned with what they need. Gradually as they customise a single unit, single row of link-house to a community, spaces created are not alien language. Its driven by their own identity and need. Neighbourhoods created has less unused space, more favourable ambience leading to a more identifiable ‘genus loci’.

O One Layout for All !?

PTIMUM INTERACTIVE CATALYST | The DIY Modular Home Concept becomes a platform where homeowners are able to express easily their needs and wants. It is the convenient agent to link the communication between the design profession and general public.

CHANGE OF FAM ILY STRUCTURE X CHANGE IN HOME LAYOUT

I

n the contemporary world inundated challenging sociocultural phenomena, there are many issues that complicate the typical convention of Home: Radical changes to traditional family structures and values. Unlike in past, poeple stay with family even after marriage and having own family. Nowadays, new generation choose to stay by themselve once they are economically independant and able to sustain by their own. With LEGO Home, parents can still reside at the same old home which full of memories with alteration in layout to cater their needs in lieu of moving to old folks apartment.
