Raymond is a licensed architectural technologist, designer and project manager born in Nairobi, Kenya. He immigrated to South Africa in 1996 where he attended school at Westville Boys High. It is here that he became fascinated with art and design, Modernism with a capital M, Le Corbusier and Adobe Photoshop - what a time that was. Raymond obtained a bachelors degree in Architecture from the University of Cape Town and went on to lead design teams and oversee construction of numerous public, cultural, residential, commercial, urban planning and institutional projects in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Raymond believes that in most cases, the most complicated design problems can be solved by seeking the essence.

/ Abstract
atelier masōmī’s pavillion for the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennial took visitors through the work of Niger’s Tuareg leather and bronze artisans. The site-specific installation was inspired by the year’s theme: How Will We Live Together? The installion would immerse visitors The Artisan’s Valley project, A market designed to bridge historical wealth gap which physically manifested as a valley cutting through the city. The Gounti Yenna Valley has long divided Niger’s capital city of Niamey into two. In the 1800s, this division was between the French colonisers and local citizens. Today, the valley divides the city across the wealth gap. Working under principal architect and designer Mariam Issoufou Kamara, I assisted in developing the concept and was responsible for taking the concept into a workable design. I managed the production of the artisan made tiles parts in Niger and shipping to Venice, Italy during the Covid-19 pandemic. The next challenge was navigating a language barrier and negotiating and securing bids from Italian contractors and finally delivering the construcion of the pavillion.

/ Abstract
atelier masomi was commissioned by The Alef Group to design a masterplan for a new residential community in the arid landscape of Sharjah, UAE. The development was fittingly named Hayyan which means to be alive in Arabic. The client envisioned a place that connected residents to nature and the environment. I was responsible for the design, developing and delivery of a feasible concept package for the mall. The design process began by addressing constraints such as the location on a complex conrner site; programmatic requirements: a convencience supermarket, shops and restaurant amenities for the residential community, offices for the management of the mall and the community. The mall is designed in keeping with simple principles that respond to the local context. Public throughfares traverse an almost monolithic mass, activated by large light-wells penetrating the entire cross section of the building from floor to roof. The light-wells also serve to ventilate the passages similar in effect to the ancient arabic wind towers. A sunken garden is carved down into the landscape to provide a unique experience for public and patrons of the restaurants. The mass is then broken down further by dressing the top in moucharabiwe, an almost transparent steel veil to allow views for the gym and offices but also provide solar shading.

/ Abstract
Obtaining planning approval for single residential buildings in the City of Cape Town is difficult enough, let alone obtaining development rights for a multi-unit development on top of an existing house with heritage status. The client sought to take advantage a booming property market by constructing 2 additional dwellings for short term rentals, directly on top of an existing single storey house. The proposal was to demolish the roof, reinforce the existing masonry walls and construct a new lightweight steel structure on top. The new building would now consist a 1-bedroom loft apartment with panoramic views of the mountain, and a pair of 2-bedroom homes overlooking Woodstock and the Cape Town Harbour beyond. All under a clean, contemporary portal envelope. I was engaged on the project from the on set, measuring up and developing as-built CAD drawings of the existing house. Working under principal architect Jacques van Niekerk, these formed the basis on which I developed the concept and design into 3D, construction drawings and a council package. I took the plans through a complex series of applications for Land-Use Management, Woodstock Property Owners Association, Heritage and Building Plans Approval and eventually obtained full council approval to deveop.

/ Abstract
The client, a successful developer of commercial and residential property in in the cape town city bowl and slong the atlantic seaboard. sought to take advantage a booming property market by constructing 2 additional dwellings for short term rentals, directly on top of an existing single storey house. Following a lengthy process to obtain heritage concent do demolish an existing house, the result was a luxury apartment building each unit with pool and planterbox balconies, with basement parking and a penthouse that occupied the entire top floor. Needless to say the views are enought to take one’s breath. Working under principal architect Jacques van Niekerk, I was responsible for developing the design, drawings for construction and council approval, obtaining all approvals and managing the construction. I took the plans through a complex series of applications for Land-Use Management, Greenpoint Property Owners Association, Heritage and Building Plans Approval and eventually obtained full council approval to develop.
