The 69kV Line 1 Rehabilitation is the first part of the main 69kV Line Rehabilitation and Re-Routing Project. The project was born out of the need to re-route electric lines running along Rizal Highway to Kalaklan Bridge, passing through lots of private customers. This makes it difficult for the SEZ team to conduct line maintenance and troubleshooting. SEZ T&D team and contractors work along the busy streets of Rizal Avenue in the Subic Bay Freeport

SEZ completes Cubi and Maritan S/S Maintenance Subic EnerZone Corporation (SEZ) completed the annual Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) of its Cubi and Maritan Substations last January 22 and 29. Spearheading the activity was the company’s Substation and Electrical Equipment Department (SEED) headed by its supervisor Justin Jay Navarro, together with engineers Richard Bulaon, Philip Ricablanca, and Alfred Cerezo.
SEZ accredited contractor Transpower System Corporation conducted the comprehensive testing of the 27.5MVA Power Transformers of both substations. Standard electrical tests were performed on all electrical equipment during the PMS, including cables, circuit breakers, switchgear assemblies, along with associated equipment comprised of control wiring, protective devices and relays, supervisory equipment, and indicating and metering instruments. The activity aimed to detect and correct potential hazards that can cause failure of existing equipment and facilities. Public Hearing on SEZ’s ISA Extension with SMEC held

SEZ holds Brand Refresher and CSR Awards BY ANIELOU GELACIO
To kick off the New Year on the right foot, Subic EnerZone Corporation (SEZ) held a Brand Refresher and CSR Awards during its weekly Monday Morning Booster Program held at the company’s administration building in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, January 9.
SEZ CorpCom, Branding, & CSR officer Raymund Tamayo facilitated the event attended by the company’s team leaders and team members headed by SEZ AVP & General Manager Warell Kern Sario. The program started with a trivia game about brands in general, followed by the Brand Refresher presentation, and completed by Tamayo’s presentation of the company’s 2012 Branding goals. The morning ended with the presentation of the SEZ Employee Volunteerism Database, which records and monitors all the manhours spent by each company team member in volunteering on CSR projects. It was highlighted by the SEZ CSR Awards where team members Robin Geronimo and Richard Bulaon were named as CSR Man of the Year and 1stRunner up respectively. Basis for

the award were the number of hours they volunteered in 2011. During the program, Tamayo underscored the main Branding objectives of SEZ this year. First is to develop all team members to become Brand Champions; second is to build Brand Endorsers or loyalists from its customers; and lastly is to keep its Brand Integrity tight by being consistent in living SEZ’s Brand Identity and Brand Image internally and externally.

11 EnerZone engineers take AP-DU Engineering Corps exam Eleven electrical engineers from AboitizPower’s EnerZone group took the qualifying exam for the AboitizPower-Distribution Units’ (APDU) Engineering Corps Career Training Program, January 30. The Engineering Corps qualifying exam was done simultaneously across the Aboitiz group’s power distribution utilities, where sister companies Davao Light, Cotabato Light, and VECO is also a part of. The APDU Engineering Corps is envisioned to become a group of top REEs from the AboitizPower distribution group who have been identified and qualified to undergo a specialized career training course. Aside from the qualifying exam, applicants will also go through a screening interview to be included in the program. Subic EnerZone Corporation’s (SEZ) engineering and operations team underwent a training facilitated by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) about 69kV Sub-Transmission Line Maintenance for Electric Cooperatives and Distribution Utilities last February 15 to 16 at the SEZ Administration Building, Subic Bay Freeport Zone. The two-day seminar-training aimed to familiarize the participants in transmission lines safety, standard operating procedures in switching, and maintenance of the 69kV subtransmission lines. SEZ’s engineering and operations team is composed of three departments namely: Transmission & Distribution Department (T&D), Substation & Electrical Engineering Department (SEED), and Planning & Design Department (PDD). The teams were headed by supervisors Ryan Griva (T&D) and Jay Navarro (SEED), and PDD & Admin

Aboitiz, “Flame symbolizes power and passion, words that accurately describe our product, power, and our people that are full of passion…” Again with a more contemporary design and improved skills of the staff, the Flame soared to even greater heights. ubic EnerZone Corporation (SEZ) General Manager Warell Kern Sario was promoted to Assistant Vice President effective January 2.
The promotion was announced by SEZ President and CEO Jaime Jose Aboitiz during the company’s Christmas Party last December 15, 2011, and thru an email from SEZ SVP & COO Dante Pollescas dated January 2, 2012. Sario brings with him 19 years of experience in the Aboitiz group, starting out as a line inspector for Davao Light in 1992. In 2002, he was assigned as the Engineering Manager of Cotabato Light & Power Company. He was then promoted as Line Services Department Manager of Davao Light in 2004, until he took the challenge as General Manager of SEZ in 2010, taking over from Pollescas as the latter is promoted SVP & COO of SEZ. Q&A with WKS 1. Who was your influence in taking this career path? My grandfather on the father side who is a master Electrician by profession. 2. What was your first job? Actually, after graduation, review, and taking the board exam, upon waiting the result, I worked for a neighbor who is a freelance electrical contractor for building wiring as helper. But my formal job in a company is with North
Davao Mining Corp. (NDMC) as helper electrician in the Rehab section of its Electrical Division. 3. What attitudes did you develop early in your career that are helping you now in your job? To be humble and independent. Interpersonal relationship and Internal Customer Service. 4. What is your typical day as SEZ GM? I usually begin my day checking my previous day’s To-do list. Then I’ll make a new list for the day according to priority considering the previous day’s unaccomplished tasks. My typical daily tasks include meetings, approval of requests needed for operations, signing of checks, check for new information/instruction that needs to be relayed to the down lines, and to relay it accordingly. I maintain an “open office door” policy, meaning making myself personally accessible to anyone at anytime. Often, visitors, either customer or employee, go in and out of my door. I like that because it gives me the opportunity to personally interact with them, share useful information, or teach them on some operational concerns. 5. How would you describe your leadership style? Commitment-based style, which means a balanced focus on both results and people. I recognize that sustainable performance comes from a committed workforce, workforce that is engaged in achieving the goals of the organization. I believe in educating people about the goal, and get them involved in the planning process and help them organize their work. I’m also always willing to provide my team information, training, and development. My style is also one that establishes the essence of being a strong role model, by

The type of movie I watch also depends on who I am watching with. I mean, I can always flex my self and ride on to any movie type, from heavy drama, love story, action, to cartoons, telenovela etc. But alone, I prefer action comedy, sports, investigative, informative, news and adventures. 13. When I give too much for someone’s benefit but he still misunderstood it otherwise, sometimes even blaming you, not because of your failure, but them being short on their personal interest. People who refuse to learn and help themselves in spite of all the passionate advice and help you extended. 16. Who is the person you admire most? Sorry, I don’t have one but several. I have one in all the five most important aspects of my life. I find it hard to choose for the “most.” I prefer to invoke my right to privacy with this question, for now, as they are too many to mention. 17. Finally, what is your message to your team members? What can they look forward to in the future? It is my belief that desire is the starting point of all achievements, not hope, not wish, but keen pulsating desire that transcends everything. There is still much to be done in making SEZ into the company of our dreams and vision. If we set aside our indifference and move forward in harmony towards one common goal and direction.

ith only a few years under the Cebu-based EnerZones’ belt, the companies had undergone tremendous changes over the past years - from a change of administrative office, to an additional substation, to a new management. This is about Mactan and Balamban EnerZone’s latest power duo that took the companies to new heights by storm. Herbert Cabatingan, or HBC, and Ben Caro Arkoncel, or BCA, are the latest additions to the team as they took their roles as MEZ and BEZ’s Administrative & Finance Manager and Assistant Vice President & General Manager respectively. On March 1, 2010, Cabatingan assumed the role of being the head admin and finance guy of both companies. Upon learning his new appointment, he expressed

his excitement in joining a young organization and knowing that he can lead the team further. He even joked that he’d be handling lesser work pressures compared to his gargantuan reportorial requirements in the past. On the last day of May 2011, EVP and COO of AboitizPower Distribution Group Jim Aboitiz announced the latest movement under his team. Aboitiz moved Irwin Pagdalian as AVP-Special Projects of AboitizPower and replaced him with the big guy from Visayan Electric Company’s (VECO) Customer Services Group Ben Arkoncel as AVP and General Manager of MEZ and BEZ. His transfer was effective on June 1, 2011. He showed the same excitement upon learning his new role in the EnerZones.

BEZ’s Arpili 25MVA substation was isolated because the 34.5kV overhead ground conductor from Toledo Power Corporation switchyard was cut-off during the quake. Power was restored immediately by looping the feeder of the Buanoy 33MVA Substation feeder 4 to Arpili Substation feeder 1 and 2. The two substations are flexible since disconnect switches were strategically installed in the system.
MEZ and BEZ’s earthquake experience Last February 6, the Visayas Region was hit by a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake at around 11:49 am, with its epicenter located near Negros Oriental. Held every year during Valentine’s Day, Lab Kita, Pa-B.P. Ka is a free blood pressure check aimed to advocate health awareness among the Subic Bay Freeport workforce. Caregiver and nursing students from Aura College, and company nurses from PTT Philippines performed the blood pressure check. The activity, now on its 3rd year of implementation and done from 6:00 am to 8:00 am of the said dates, was held at the entrance of the Remy Field Subic Gym on the first day, then at the SBMA Main Gate on the second day. SEZ AVP & General Manager Warell Kern Sario signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with DepEd Olongapo Schools Division Superintendent Jessie Ferrer last March 16 to formally make the project official. Guest of honors during the event and also signing as witnesses were Olongapo City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr., SEZ Administration and PDD Manager Edgar Caluza, and OCES Principal Consuelo Suguitan. In her welcome remarks, Suguitan warmly thanked Subic EnerZone and the Aboitiz Foundation for giving a “timely gift to the preschool pupils of OCES.” She said that because the school had a big volume of pre-school enrollees this year, they are cramping the students in available classrooms, sometimes having two sections in one room, dividing it with only a temporary wood partition. They are expecting the enrollees to increase even more

But dreams never become reality simply by wishing them to happen. Someone has to organize the dream into workable parts. Motivation without organization leads to frustration!
Seven Principles of Successful Organizing 1. KEEP IT SIMPLE. The strongest organizations are always the simplest. The more complex you make something, the more likely that one of the parts will break down. 2. PARTICIPATION: STRIVE FOR MAXIMUM INVOLVEMENT. People tend to
be “down” on what they are not “up” on. If you’re reorganizing an office, open and frequent communication is a must. “Our” ideas are always better than “my” ideas! 3. DELEGATION: MAKE SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS. Break down major goals into smaller tasks and match the right people with the right tasks. Know what each task involves and know who is best qualified to do it. Remember, everyone’s responsibility usually ends up being nobody’s responsibility! 4. MOTIVATION: ALLOW FOR OWNERSHIP. Effective organizations allow workers to develop their own areas of responsibility without unnecessary interference. Giving people freedom at work always increases motivation and improves morale!

SEZ opens 2012 Basketball Tournament With the theme “Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM)”, Subic EnerZone Corporation (SEZ) opened its 2012 Basketball Tournament at the SEZ Administration Building quadrangle, February 21. In his opening message, SEZ UERA & MMD Manager Frederick Coronel said that “everyone should always remember the values we have learned through the years by participating in our Basketball Tournament.” He stressed that values like discipline, patience, sportsmanship, and

friendship should be manifested not only on basketball games, but also in our personal lives. SEZ distribution engineer Eric Caseja led the participants in the Oath of Sportsmanship.
