Raytown 2014 Arts & Music Festival Headlining Brewer and Shipley

The third Annual Raytown Arts and Music Festival will celebrate with great food, art and music on September 27, 2014 at C. Lee Kenagy Park from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This year’s festival has a line up of top notch musicians with Brewer and Shipley headlining. “We believe this is the best group of artists and musicians offered anywhere in the city,” said Dave Turner, Parks Event manager. “Our volunteer festival committee is working tirelessly towards making this festival a success.” The festival will also highlight the 50th Anniversary of Fun House Pizza - the Original. “We are so happy to be a part of this community,” said Gary Graham, owner

of Fun House Pizza. “And what a great way to celebrate our anniversary than by being a Gold Sponsor of this arts festival.” Still as passionate as ever, Michael Brewer and Tom Shipley continue to blend guitars and voices and perform for audiences 40 years after their trademark vocal harmonies and intertwined acoustic guitars carved a unique niche in America’s soundboard. Their melodic music and underlying lyrical themes of personal freedom and traditional songs of love still resonate with long-time fans while continuing to draw new ones. Brewer & Shipley’s Top 10 hit “One Toke Over The Line” was largely responsible for introducing them to the masses, yet their music careers neither began nor ended with this one song. “One Toke Over The Line” became a hit single record, but that was a small measure of the impact Brewer and Shipley had on people who lis-

While the record buying public was casting its vote of approval by buying the single, the (soon to be disgraced) Vice President of the United States, Spiro Agnew, labeled Brewer & Shipley as subversives, and then strong-armed the FCC to ban “One Toke” from the airwaves just as it was peaking on the charts. Brewer & Shipley landed on Nixon’s Enemies List, a badge of honor they wear proudly to this day. City Hall To Get New Phone System By Mallory Ragon Raytown will get an updated phone system after the board of aldermen approved funding for the project this week. The current system was installed in 1997 and

has seen myriad issues ranging from keys and displays not working on handsets to problems with voicemail and the operating system. The aging system is difficult to repair or make replacements and, at 14 years old, is simply

not technologically current. The upgrade is expected to improve communication at city hall, both internally and with residents. Andy Noll, public works director, referenced conversations with the repairs team,

who is surprised it has lasted this long. “[They say], ‘I can’t believe you guys haven’t been having more problems yet,’” Noll said. “They’re looking at us like we’re crazy.” The new internet proto-

col system will cost approximately $45,000 for the equipment itself and about $19,000 for the installation of new cabling, which will need to be run to each terminal in city hall. The funding, approved in an amount not to exceed

$64,787.30, is through the capital sales tax fund. The board’s vote was unanimous. Alderman Charlotte Melson was absent from the meeting and Alderman Janet Emerson abstained.

Wanted: Governor’s Christmas Tree If you have a 40-foot evergreen tree that you would enjoy seeing on the lawn of the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City, the Missouri Department of Conservation would like to talk to you. Forestry Field Programs Supervisor Nick Kuhn says the Conservation Department is on its annual quest for a tree to adorn the

grounds of the Governor’s Mansion during the holiday season. To qualify, candidate trees must be at least 40 feet tall. Only eastern red cedar, Norway spruce, or white pine trees will be considered. Candidate trees must be fully branched on all four sides and accessible by large equipment. Full guidelines are available at mdc.mo.gov/

node/23091. Once a tree is selected, the Conservation Department will coordinate the cutting and delivery of the tree to the Governor’s Mansion at no cost to the owner. The donor will receive a personalized thank-you from the governor and an invitation to the lighting ceremony, which usually occurs the first week of De-

The Development & Public Affairs Department participated in the Raytown Safety Fair, August 5 at Kenagy Park. We had information on permitting, code enforcement, animal control, how to communicate with City Hall (Facebook, Twitter, City’s Website and Engage Raytown) and the promotion of pet adoptions. We had a five-year old cocker spaniel with us that needed a good home. And good news, the little guy got adopted.

Raytown EMS has agreed to help the Community Blood Center with a blood drive on Tuesday, September 9th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Community Blood Center was in desperate need of blood drives in our area so we will hold this “last minute” drive to help them out. Please plan on saving a life by donating blood! Please contact EMS at 737-6030 if you have questions regarding the blood drive.

Consideration Of Family Dollar Development Continues By Mallory Ragon The board of aldermen will continue their discussion of a proposed Family Dollar discount store at their next session, after a presentation and public hearing on the matter this week. The development is slated for two adjoining properties at 9601 E. 63 Street, near the intersection of 63d Street with Raytown Trafficway. The developer, Triple C Development, is seeking approval of the plan under the Raytown Central Business District (CBD) design standards. As John Benson, development and public affairs director, described, the property would adhere to the majority

of the CBD’s standards but the development plan seeks a few waivers regarding the driveway location and access from 63rd Street, maximum setbacks from the street and the amount of glass on the east façade of the building. The developer would also be responsible for curb, gutter and storm sewer improvements along Evanston Avenue, which runs along the east side of the property. Residents who spoke during the public comments portion of the discussion cited concerns about the traffic impact, the appearance of the store and its adherence to the CBD standards and market saturation: Raytown already has other similar businesses,

like Dollar General and Dollar Tree. Alderman Jim Aziere was also concerned about the impact on traffic, but Benson noted that staff determined additional traffic studies unnecessary after a recent study completed for the downtown area. Since 63rd Street is classified as an arterial road, it is expected to carry excess traffic without issue. The planning and zoning commission approved the development plan with six votes for it and one against; the board’s vote to continue their discussion to their August 19 session was unanimous. Alderman Charlotte Melson was absent from the August 12 meeting.

cember. “Trees of this size often are near the end of their lives,” says Kuhn. “It sometimes happens that homeowners, businesses, or communities have wonderful evergreens that need to be removed for home expansion, utility work, or other reasons. Having your tree displayed at the Governor’s

Mansion is a wonderful way to share its beauty and make lasting memories for the donor and thousands of Missourians who visit the mansion during the holidays.” Photos of candidate trees can either be emailed to holidaytrees@mdc.mo.gov or mailed to Missouri Department of Conservation, attn: Holiday Tree, P.O. Box 180,

Jefferson City, MO 65102. Be sure to include your telephone number, email address, location of the tree, and several pictures taken from different angles and distances. All entries must be submitted by Sept. 30. For more information or questions, contact Kuhn at Nick.Kuhn@mdc.mo.gov or 573-522-4115, ext. 3306.

Raytown Updates Codes Violation Process By Mallory Ragon Raytown has approved updates to their city ordinance regarding nuisance abatement. The current code is in place to manage issues of excessively tall grass, junk or debris, and other nuisances. It outlines a nine-day process, with four business days allowed for residents to resolve the issue or request a hearing, and five business days for abatement. The process is the same for all nuisances, whether it’s the resident’s first offense or their second. John Benson, development and public affairs director, proposed a few changes on behalf of city staff, as follows:

• Change the timeline from business days to calendar days to avoid confusion over the inclusion of weekends or holidays in some notices. • Change the notification and hearing period from four days to five, and the abatement period from five days to four. This maintains the nine-day period while giving residents additional time to receive notice from the city. • Change the timeline for code violations that are repeat offenses for the same property within the same calendar year. The new language states that for second (or multiple) offenses, property owners have five calendar days instead of nine in order to correct the violation.

• Update the language of the code to reference the city’s ability to also issue a citation to the property owner for failure to abate a nuisance violation. (The city already has that capability, though it is not addressed or referenced in the current ordinance.) The changes received unanimous approval and appreciation from the board of aldermen. “The best part of this to me,” said Alderman Jason Greene, “is the ability to expedite the process with repeat offenders.” Alderman Charlotte Melson was absent from the session.

Car Crashes Through Raytown Yard Sale On Friday afternoon, August 8, 2014, a SUV crashed through a yard sale at 74th street and Blue Ridge Boulevard and was stopped by a tree in the front yard. Jessica Williams was horrified when she saw it coming thinking her kids were still outside. “It was chaotic. People were running out of their houses. People were stop-

ping in the middle of the street”, said Jessica. “I didn’t even realize the kids had gone inside. I thought they were still out there.” The crash also involved a blue minivan that hit Jessica Coulter’s car while she was shopping the yard sale. “My older daughter was in the back, and my little one was in this side and I was

standing outside looking at something in the garage sale,” Coulter said. “All of the sudden the car came and hit it. It was scary.” Both drivers were hurt and taken to a hospital, leaving the families grateful that no one else was hurt. Police are investigating what led to the crash.

Jason Offutt Long Prairie, Minnesota, is an innocuous little town. With a Coborn’s grocery store, a Dairy Queen, and bowling alley, it’s probably like most other hamlets in the state. I didn’t think much of it as I drove through, but I’m glad I did. Long Prairie has a piece of history that shows you never know what kind of excitement a little town has had unless you ask. James “Jerry” F. Townsend piloted his car over the gently sloping hills of Minnesota State Highway 27 between Little Falls to Long Prairie around 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 23, 1965. Townsend, a budding radio host on the local 1,000-watt AM station KEYL, rounded a curve about four miles outside of Long Prairie and suddenly faced something that shook his Christian upbringing. According to the Mutual UFO Network report, Townsend saw a silver rocket about 40 feet tall standing tall in the road on three tail fins. As Townsend’s mind tried to make some sense of the object, his car engine stalled, its electrical system dead. Townsend shoved his feet onto the brake peddle, sending the car to a screeching halt about 20 feet from the rocket and, surprisingly, didn’t wet his pants. His first thought was to try and push the rocket over with his car, but the car wouldn’t start. Townsend stepped out of his dead vehicle and suddenly realized he was not alone. Three metal entities, about the size and shape of beer cans, walked awkwardly on two legs from beneath the rocket and stood between it and Townsend. The entities put down a third leg that acted as a tripod and sat there, staring at

Townsend who, again, remained amazingly dry. After about three minutes, the Beer Can Men walked into a light that shone from beneath the craft and went back inside. Seconds later, a loud humming broke the silence Townsend hadn’t realized what surrounded him during the encounter. The rocket rose into the night’s sky and disappeared. At this point, Townsend’s car started, the headlights shone on the spot where the craft had been, and music on the radio blared. I hate to bring it up, but if this had happened to me, I’d be in a fetal position on the highway crying for my mother. When the ship disappeared into the night, Townsend drove to the Todd County Sheriff’s Department and reported his encounter. Although deputies only discovered an unexplained oil slick at the landing site, there were a number of reports by farmers, hunters and the sheriff of a neighboring county corroborating Townsend’s claim of a silver rocket flying through the sky of central Minnesota that night. The United States Air Force’s Project Blue Book, and famous UFO investigators John Keel, Jacques Vallee, and Dr. J. Allen Hynek, all investigated Townsend’s case. But, since we don’t have a flying saucer hanging from the ceiling of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Townsend’s case is like every other UFO report – unexplained. This encounter could have happened to me during my trip through Todd County near Long Prairie, but Jerry Townsend, I’m glad it happened to you. I may have tried to drink the Beer Can Men, and that probably wouldn’t have ended well. Jason Offutt’s latest book, “Across a Corn-Swept Land: An epic beer run through the Upper Midwest,” is available at amazon.com. A native of Missouri, Jason currently teaches journalism at Northwest Missouri State University and has earned many humor writer awards throughout his career.

Satirically, in last week’s column I was talking about how Jonathan Winters had his estate just across the way from my offices in the middle of Toluca Lake (Burbank, Ca) and how Winters’ used to just drop in my reception area of the office in the mornings and entertain actors and actresses waiting to see an agent. Sadly, on Monday morning of this week we lost an iconic legend in the biz, Robin Williams. Jonathan Winters was probably the most influential comic on Robin William’s as Robin would get advice and council from Winters all the time during even the 1980’s. Williams loved the way Winters was able to come up with impromptu one-liners and to really wacky gyrations with the energy of a teenager who was hyperactive and Winters would absolutely have Robin Williams falling down on the floor laughing at his antics at the most inappropriate times. This became and developed into Robin William’s trademark comedic style for the rest of his stand-up career for decades to come. Robin Williams (“Good Will Hunting” and Oscar Winning role), would drop in unannounced many times at Budd Friedman’s Improv, as it was called back then. Today it is called Budd Friedman’s L.A. Comedy Improv Club. It was on Melrose Avenue and every comic who was anybody worked out there. Didn’t matter how well known you were. It was the perfect layout, sound, ambiance, etc. to do comedy in. So, Williams came in one night when I was there. Dana Carvey, famous for his “Wayne’s World” movie and “Wayne’s World II movie and several movies he starred in with John Candy was working out some new material on the stage when all of a sudden Robin Williams bursts into the room, loud, boisterous, hollering at the top of his lungs, “when is it going to be my turn”, the audience cracking up already just realizing who had just entered. The dichoto-

Williams just jumped up onto the stage right in the middle of Carvey telling a joke, interrupting him with his own routine, which all was impromptu. None of this planned. Williams literally stole the show in one minute with non-stop lines, and the audience went wild. Carvey went along and graciously, of course, and was privileged just to have the man there. Williams threw the microphone across the stage to Carvey and he caught it in such a way that he cut his hand and it hurt, without a doubt. Being the pros they both were it was just a funnier routine now than ever because of his bleeding hand and Robin Williams laughing like crazy. Just then, Johnathan Winters walks into the Improv and sits right down in front of them just staring at the both of them, as though they were crazy. Just the look on his face had folks, including Carvey and Williams, rolling on the floor. Winters walks up onto the stage in the middle of one of their routines and starts out on the both of them doing his act, and mimicking their every move. The comedic timing of all three of these stars was just impeccably perfect, that it appeared as though they

Winters and Williams left the club together eventually and Carvey was left up there all alone on the stage staring at the ceiling saying to the crowd, “wow, wow, oh, wow, what a night! A few weeks later, appearing on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson as he had done dozens of times, Robin Williams commented about that night and told Carson how much he had been influenced by the talents of Jonathan Winters, way before he made a name for himself (even before “Mork and Mindy”). by the tragic loss of our friend and a legend in comedy, Robin Williams. May he rest in peace now because his life was so full of drama, pomp and circumstance. As Williams exited the room, he turned back as he always did, to the audience, and with his trademark hand gesture, that boyish, angelic smile, took his bow, thanking them and walked away. That image will forever be planted in my memories of this genius of a talent. He’s on that “Big” stage now.

Discover A New Twist On Classic Campfire S’mores Notes, Tips & Suggestions Recipe provided by Mom Endeavors. To toast marshmallows, put mini-marshmallows onto baking sheet (a little stale or cold can help) and put them in oven under broiler for few seconds until golden brown. Source Dove

Roasting marshmallows around the campfire with friends and family is a popular pastime. Luckily, the classic combination of chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker can be enjoyed in so many ways whether you’re fireside or stuck inside! Try giving the sticky-sweet summer favorite a modern twist by using DOVE Dark Chocolate with the never-bitter, silky-smooth taste. Here are two ways to pair everyone’s favorite Keebler Original Grahams and DOVE Dark Chocolate to make s’moresinspired desserts that are impossible to resist.

3-Layer Caramel and Chocolate Marshmallow Bars

Ingredients • 15 whole Keebler Graham Crackers • 2 (11-ounce) bags caramel pieces • 16 ounces DOVE Dark Chocolate • 2 cups mini marshmallows Preparation 1. Line an 8-by-8-inch pan with foil, leaving 2-inch overhang on each side. Place five graham crackers on bottom (break crackers up as needed to fit pan). 2. Melt one 11-ounce bag of caramels in microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring in

Olive Garden, Middle Of The Road, But Worth A Visit

By George Michaud

Bruschetta has always been a favorite of mine since I first tried it at Perino’s Italian Restaurant in Los Angeles in the 1980s, so I look for it to start off a meal with a glass of the house wine. It can be delightfully refreshing with the chopped Roma tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, garlic and at times a secret ingredient. At Olive Garden, I was a bit disappointed in its flavor. Something was missing so it turned out flat. Surprised me because I had this three times

before and it was wonderful. Changes had been made and the ingredients were not as fresh as the other attempts. My guest thought it was delightful so I didn’t say a word and Bruschetta costs a modest $6.99. Brandon, a head waiter came by and replaced the Bruschetta with another because I let him know about it when he asked how things were. He assured me it was just made but it really was from the same batch regardless of what was told me. This head waiter also hur-

ried the check to our table far before we were even close to being done with the meal. I always find it complimentary to a customer to wait to be asked for a check so the customer doesn’t feel as though they are being rushed through their meal. Olive Garden’s traditional large bowl of house salad with vinegar and oil, perfectly flavored with fresh crisp lettuce, spinach greens and sweet onions. Fresh peppers mixed in make the salad a full meal along with their garlic bread sticks

“The Nut Job” Movie At Kenagy Park The Raytown Parks and Recreation will be showing “The Nut Job” on August 15, 2014, at Kenagy Park, 9608 E. 79 Street. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets. Movies start at dusk. Concessions and fresh popped popcorn will be available for sale. The last movie of the season will be “Free Birds” on September 5 so mark your calendars. Thanks again to our sponsors, Friends of Raytown Parks who purchased the movie equipment with a grant from Truman Heartland Community Foundation and Michael W. Hanna Law Firm for purchasing the movie rights. For more information on Movies in the Park, call the Raytown Park Office at 816-3584100.

RAYTOWN RECREATION POOL and BILLIARDS

Sarah, the waitress doing a super job served nice and hot in a basket. Easy to eat too much of, not leaving room for your entrée’. A favorite with many, undoubtedly. Dinner entrée was their special combination dish called “Tour of Italy” at $16.99. This is comprised of their Lasagna Classico, Fettuccine Alfredo and Chicken Parmigiana. The most delicious of all was the chicken parmigiana with a wonderful tomato based sauce, cooked sort of crisp the way I like it. Some don’t like it quite as

crisp but I do and it was just perfect. Lasagna lacked what we all expect from it. Where were the cheeses? Lasagna is famous for its mixture of various cheeses, layered in perfect order and cooked to perfection. This lasagna was a three star out of five in my book. Very edible but wasn’t up to what I expect from Olive Garden on this visit. Fettuccine Alfredo was even less attractive in taste as well as appearance. Lacked distinctive flavor expected of this dish and I was surprised since the chicken parmigiana was so good. My guest tried an Italian Margarita and I highly recommend you give it a try if you like these sort of drinks. The glass was trimmed around the top with a flavor of peach and sugar. No salt, thank goodness. Olive Garden’s atmosphere and ambiance are typical Italian and the restaurant is very clean. A most important issue with me in any establishment. General Manager, Monesh Banerjea is a very delightful, soft spoken gentleman who is more than willing to satisfy and please a customer. A man with class

and Olive Garden must recognize he’s an asset to their restaurant and the chain. He truly knows the business and watches for everything little thing, which is a manager’s job to make certain a place runs smoothly and that food coming out of the kitchen is the best they have to offer. Our service by waitress Sarah Wilson was just excellent and handled everything perfectly. Tiramisu dessert was wonderful and one of my favorites. You can’t go wrong with that one. I’m going to make another visit to Olive Garden and try the same dish called “A Tour of Italy” once again and see if it is back to the way it should be. Very courteous servers and you’ll be happy you went to this Olive Garden. Tell the manager, Mo, as he is called, that you read about Olive Garden in The Raytown-Brooking Eagle. George Michaud has written reviews for many publications, mainly on the West Coast for theater, live music and was a restaurant critic. George can be reached at musicmarketer@ att.net
