When The Weather Is Frightful, MoDOT Has An App For That New KC Scout app and other tools available to help check road conditions

When the weather is frightful, the Missouri Department of Transportation has several tools available for motorists to check road conditions before they travel in the Kansas City region or statewide. A Kansas City Scout App is available to help motorists in the KC metro region travel roads more

safely. The app, which is available for free for iPhone, iPad and Android can be found at www.kcsout.net, and works with MoDOT’s statewide Traveler Information Map but offers more specific information for the KC area including: • Real Time average speeds in a color-coded

map • Incident information with a detailed description of the incident if the icon is clicked • Short-term road work (MoDOT or KDOT) MoDOT’s Traveler Information App, available for free at the iPhone App Store and Android Marketplace, offers real-time

views of road conditions for all Missouri’s interstates and major highways. Conditions are color-coded, giving users accurate information at a glance. Computer users can also go directly to http://www. modot.org/kansascity to view the Traveler Information Map online. “No matter how you

McCaskill Grills Experian Executive On Identity Theft Case U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, who this year has led the charge on a wide range of consumer protection issues, used a Senate Commerce Committee hearing

Wednesday, December 19, to grill Experian executive, Tom Hadley, on the practices in the data broker industry that collects, compiles and sells consumer information for

marketing purposes. McCaskill is Chairman of the Senate subcommittee in charge of consumer protection. Much of the senator’s questioning of witnesses focused on

reports alleging that a subsidiary of the data broker Experian sold data to an alleged identity theft operation. In that case the

UPS, FedEx Did Not Make Christmas Delivery Buyers relying on Christmas delivery by UPS and FedEx were disappointed in many parts of the country from the east to west coast. The delays were blamed on snow and ice in the Midwest last week and an ice storm two weeks ago in Dallas in addition to package volume exceeding the capacity of the two delivery services. Most of the disappointment was experienced by online shoppers, many of whom waited until the last minute to place orders. Customers found they could not rely on the estimated delivery time provided by both UPS.com and FedEx.com. Some customers reported that tracking updates indicated an attempted delivery when in fact a follow up phone call determined the depot was overloaded and never attempted delivery. UPS does not pick up or deliver on Christmas day yet extra

workers were brought in Wednesday night to a hub n Louisville, KY, to sort packages for Thursday and Friday delivery. UPS declared that it will honor its expedited air service guarantees but ground service has no guarantee after December 11. FedEx contacted customers who had packages available for pickup and allowed them to come in on Christmas Day to pick up their at their local FedEx Express centers. The U.S. Postal Service carriers were making deliveries on Sunday, December 22, to keep up with the work load - a rarity indeed. The USPS guaranteed delivery to most U.S. destinations by Christmas if packages were mailed by noon on Monday, December 23 and it was reported that on Christmas Day carriers were making last minute deliveries of Priority Express packages.

Attorney General Announces Three KC-area Funeral Homes To Be Sold Due To Anti-Trust Concerns Attorney General Chris Koster reported on December 23 that three Kansas City-area funeral businesses must be sold as part of an acquisition that would combine the two largest funeral businesses in the nation. Koster said he and six other Attorneys General, as well as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), had concerns that the acquisition “would substantially lessen competition in numerous markets,” including

Construction And Business Services Lead Kansas City In Employment Growth By Jeff Pinkerton KCEconomy.com Kansas City’s Mining-Logging and Construction industry (the vast majority of which is construction employment) increased 8.1 percent (3,300 jobs) between October 2012 and October 2013. As we have mentioned before, construction employment took a big hit during the recession Manager continued from page 1 company had received numerous payments from an individual in Singapore who was allegedly using data obtained from Experian’s subsidiary to facilitate identity theft. The individual engaged in identity theft was indicted in federal court earlier this year. However, neither Experian nor its subsidiary have been held accountable for its role in enabling the criminal activity to occur. The sale of information began before Experian purchased the subsidiary Court Ventures but allegedly continued for a year after the sale. “I understand this was not a crime that began under your watch, but you did buy the company and you did keep getting the wire

and has been slow to recover, so this is certainly welcome news. Most local industries saw employment increases. The only exceptions are retail and federal and state government employment. Federal government employment fell to 23,900 marking its lowest point since at least 1990. See graphic at right.

transfers from Singapore and the only reason you ever questioned them is because the Secret Service knocked on your door,” McCaskill said to Hadley, representing Experian. “I don’t know how long these wire transfers would have gone on until you caught (this person), but I don’t have confidence that it would have stopped at all.” McCaskill called for Congress to pass legislation that would provide greater transparency for consumers about the information data brokers collect and database and hold companies liable for negligent behavior that results in harm to consumers. That hearing also included testimony from the Federal Trade Commission, as well as academic experts and those with expertise in consumer privacy and marketing.

must be divested are: • Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, 801 Northwest 108th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64155; • Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas 66210; and • Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. Additional divestitures are expected to be ordered

in 14 other states as part of settlements filed by Koster and the six other Attorneys General in U.S. District Court and by the FTC. The six other states are Texas, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Houston-based Service Corporation International (SCI), the largest funeral business in the nation, is acquiring the secondlargest funeral provider, New Orleans-based Stew-

art Enterprises (SCI). SCI owns and operates more than 1,440 funeral-service locations and 374 cemeteries and 100 crematories in 44 states. Stewart owns and operates 217 funeral homes and 141 cemeteries in 24 states, including the three Kansas City-area businesses. The two companies have agreed to the terms required by the Attorneys General and the FTC. “My office closely monitors mergers and ac-

quisitions to protect Missouri consumers,” Koster said. “People selecting funeral services are often in a fragile state of mind, and we want to make sure they are not taken advantage of by unfair pricing schemes.” In addition to the divestitures, the agreement requires SCI to provide notice of future acquisitions in the Kansas Cityarea and other specific markets.

Eggnog is a musthave for the season, and most everyone agrees that homemade tastes best. So start with the basics to make a perfect Shaken Eggnog Cock-

tail. A whole egg (using pasteurized eggs eliminates the risk of salmonella), cream, brandy or bourbon, some simple syrup and you’re on your way to cocktail bliss. Sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice and it’s time for a toast with this creamy, slightly spicy take on eggnog. As a nod to another seasonal favorite, the cranberry, a Cranberry Fizz is just what the mixologist ordered. It’s an ethereal combination of orange liqueur, vodka and cranberry juice, accented with hints of lime and bitters. Add an egg white and give it a few shakes; the egg white provides a layer of foamy, frothy fizz. Egg whites have been used to give a “fizz” to cocktails since the late 1800s, so clink your glasses together to celebrate this tradition, which can be enjoyed once again, thanks to pasteurized eggs.

Eagle Days at the lake is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Clay County Parks and Recreation Depart-

ment. Outdoor viewing stations will be set up for visitors to see wild eagles and waterfowl. Numbers are weather dependent. But most years eagles can be spotted near concentrations of waterfowl. The stations will be placed according to best viewing positions that weekend. Each winter, eagles migrate through Mis-

souri and stay primarily near rivers and lakes with open water, where they can find fish or waterfowl for food. A single snowy owl, an unusual migrant visitor from the north, was spotted at Smithville Lake in early December. But it was last seen on Dec. 3, said Brad Jacobs, an MDC ornithologist. No snowy owl sightings have been reported

in recent weeks, though birders have been out looking, said Lora Vacca, Smithville Lake operations manager for the Corps of Engineers.
