Welcome to the 2012-2013 season at the Englewood Art Center, a division of Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. Englewood Art Center has long been known for our wonderful curated and community art exhibitions, the friendliness and professionalism of our instructors and staff, and the beauty of our facilities. With classes ranging from painting, ceramics, photography, drawing, and creative writing to our new digital arts lab, Englewood Art Center has something to spur the creativity of artists at all levels. In this class, students will receive step-by-step instruction to learn the fundamental concepts and features in Adobe Photoshop CS5 needed to develop and edit their digital images. This course will cover Adobe Camera RAW, Bridge and Mini Bridge, all of which are included Photoshop CS5. Students will receive assignments at the end of each class to practice the day’s course material. NOTE: Students need to bring a flash drive to each class. (intermediate - advanced)

In the first session of this 2-part course students learn the basics of Adobe InDesign, the professional designers’ graphics software. It can be used to create posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, books and portfolios. This class focuses on learning the basics of graphic design, creating an aesthetically pleasing layout, and displaying your portfolio. 8 or more portfolio/examples of art are required. CLASS REQUIREMENTS: Prior knowledge of other programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Basic knowledge of the Macintosh Computer is a plus but not required.

You want to take an art class, but you’ve never picked up a brush or a pencil? If so, this class is for you! In each class, the instructor will introduce students to tools, materials and techniques of a particular art medium. Materials are provided to allow students to practice the technique lessons. These classes are a fun and easy way for people with no art experience to figure out which art medium suits them, or for artists accomplished in a single medium to experiment with alternative art materials, tools and techniques. Check in at the front desk, the EAC e-newsletter or on the EAC website to see which media will be the focus of each class.
Every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, bring your friends to this fun evening of experimental painting and wine tasting! Knowledgeable staff from our local partner, Vino Loco, will pour samples and talk about interesting wines and EAC instructor Joanne Stramara will help you unlock your creative spirit! Each session will feature instruction of a painting technique and a different vintage. Materials, non-alcohol beverages, and snacks are included in the course fee.

Begin hand building or refine your wheel skills to create your own unique pottery. Experienced potters are welcome to use the limited number of wheels. Class price includes use of up to 25-pounds of clay, glazes and firing. Additional clay may be purchased from EAC. All students must adhere to the Pottery Studio Policies and Procedures, handed out upon registration. The Thursday afternoon class is the same class, it’s simply an afternoon alternative.

By taking one step further and incorporating various weaving structures, students will create a Gamp; a woven sampler using a pin frame loom. Exploration of different warp and weft arrangements will be used to create variations in pattern and design. Students will learn to use under glazes, texture design, stencils, and hand painted decoration to create a variety of different effects on pottery. There will also be instruction on the application of textural elements to enhance the forms. Glazing techniques, stain, and oxide uses will be covered during the last day of the workshop. This three-day workshop is a crash course in drawing that will cover drawing topics including gesture, contour, line, form, and perspective. Additionally, students will discover their own drawing abilities while learning total visual affect of drawing. Lessons from this workshop will apply to every type of subject matter, regardless of complexity. (beginner – advanced)
This workshop will introduce students to the color wheel, pencils, the effects of various pencils and papers, layering and burnishing techniques, and color effects on each other with emphasis on value, form, and line. During this workshop students will create thumbnail sketches and work up to a final 8 x 10 colored pencil drawing. An entire day will be devoted to developing students value drawing and working within the three major value shapes – light, medium, and dark. Morning instruction will focus on changing poses of the model – ranging incrementally from 30 seconds to 15 minutes. GALLERY POLICIES & GUIDELINES 1. Entries are received by the Gallery Committee on the “Receiving Date” only and removed on the “Removal Date” only. Please make arrangements for someone else to deliver/remove if you are unable to be here personally. Items not picked up on the “ Removal Date” will be subject to a storage fee of $3 per day. Any exceptions must be approved by the Gallery Manager. 2. Only original works may be submitted to our exhibitions (except for “Anything Goes”) This means that the subject of the entry must be a concept entirely developed by the submitting artist and executed by his/her own hand. Using or duplicating another’s photography or art whether by machine or paint is considered copyright infringement and may not be hung in EAC’s regular exhibits. Entries determined to be duplications as defined above will be excluded from the exhibition and any awards will be revoked with no return of the entry fee. Artwork to be exhibited must be current, not more than three years old, and may be exhibited only once with the exception of “Anything Goes.” All artwork must be titled. Art work is fine art media only including paintings, collage, photography and 3D works. 3. All artwork must be suitably framed under Plexiglas, with the exception of pastel and charcoal works which may be under glass, but not exceeding 25 lb. Artwork must be wired properly with the wire 3“ down from the top of the frame and should have some slack. “Gallery wrap” canvas is acceptable without Plexiglas or frame but the painting must extend to all visible canvas. Work submitted as a “diptych” or “triptych” must be identically framed each piece will be charged the ongoing entry fee. 4. Artwork may be priced for sale or NFS. Artwork may not be removed until the end of the exhibition. 5. E xhibitions are not based on a theme unless specifically noted. All exhibitions are open to all artists with the exception of Members shows, and Groups and Classes. 6. During Judging, the Gallery is closed to all except the Judge and the Gallery Chairman. A Juried exhibition is an exhibition of the highest quality. A juried exhibit means that a judge views the art received and eliminates entries prior to hanging. Prizes are sizable, and simply hanging in such an exhibit is an honor. Entry fees are not refundable and there is no guarantee that an artist’s work will be juried in. Eliminated work must be picked up prior to the exhibit. 7. Awards can be monetary, medallion ribbons, certificates and/or people’s choice. There will be only one award per artist. 8. All work will be handled with the greatest care by EAC, but it is understood by the artist that EAC cannot be responsible for loss or damage. All work will be hung at the discretion of the EAC Exhibition Committee, and unacceptable items may include shabby or dirty appearance, lewd or cultist, copies or prints of an artist’s work, items created from kits, commercially or digitally made items, and prefabricated or manufactured materials. 9. Please be advised that the EAC reserves the right to make any changes in any of the above Information and accepts no responsibility for undue inconvenience inadvertently caused by such changes or any error contained herein.
