Following last year’s Bollywood musical Wuthering Heights, Tamasha returns to the Belgrade with a new interpretation of Lorca’s masterpiece.
After successful outings in London and the Latitude Festival, I’m A Minger tours for the first time – funny and moving, it asks tough questions about the rise in suicide as a “life” choice for teenagers today. Follow 14 year-old Katie in her battle against the bullies and her search for love. Contains some strong language. Age recommendation: 14+ Running time 70 minutes. Set in the town of Jhang in Pakistan, The House of Bilquis Bibi tells a personal yet subtly political story of small town lives with global ties. Bilquis Bibi rules over her household with a rod of iron and a stifling love which cages her five daughters. Like butterflies forever cocooned, they long to shimmer and show their true colours. When her husband dies, Bilquis agrees for her eldest girl Abida to become engaged to her nephew Pappo. He brings with him the hope of love and the American dream. Bilquis turns a blind eye to the illicit nightly visits Pappo pays to his fiancée’s balcony. But what will happen when she realises that more than one daughter is staying awake for him? Indian actress and singer Ila Arun stars as the domineering matriarch Bilquis, leading an all-female cast of nine, which also includes Indira Joshi, familiar to TV audiences from The Kumars at No. 42 and Grumpy Old Women.

Drama
It’s 3pm on 16 May 1987 and the streets of Coventry are deserted. But not for long… Those not in pubs, or round their TV sets, were running to get there and what followed was two hours that changed the city forever. A match packed with drama, which seemed to sum up the spirit of Coventry – determination, inventiveness, diversity and struggle. Against all the odds and expectations on that fateful day, Coventry City FC achieved the ultimate goal – they won the FA Cup. The streets were soon awash with a sea of sky blue as the people of Coventry united in victory. Everyone remembers what they were doing during that FA Cup win. Even those who hated football had a story to tell, and in B2 this September these stories inspire a brand new drama about the city on that legendary day. With the atmosphere and emotion of the match buzzing through the streets, eleven players take centre stage to recreate the events of the final and tell the funny, edgy, moving, and sometimes farcical stories that were playing out in Coventry during those nail-biting 90 minutes - plus a bit of extra time! We Love You City provides a snapshot of Coventry in 1987 and gives you a chance to share your own memories of this defining moment in the city’s history. So dig out your Sky Blue scarf and book your tickets to what BBC commentator John Motson described as “the finest Cup Final I’ve had the pleasure of commentating on.” Age Recommendation: 14+

Belgrade Young Company presents
all the moves
By Chris O’Connell
Mon 27 September – Sat 2 October
Thurs 4 – Sat 13 November
Exactly 35 years after a certain grumpy super-sleuth with an eye for the ladies and a thirst for beer made his first appearance in Colin Dexter’s novel Last Bus to Woodstock, he’s back…
Mark doesn’t want to fall out with everyone he looks at, it just happens. BB is top of the class, but shoplifting makes her feel more real. Louise is just out of nappies but already has a failed marriage and two kids under her belt. With a big world moving fast around them, they are straining to make sense of their place in it. But with no one there to teach them all the moves, how do they know they’re making the right choices?
Inspector Morse takes to the stage in an all-new murder mystery, House of Ghosts. By special arrangement with Colin Dexter and starring Colin Baker (Dr Who) as Morse, Alma Cullen – the writer behind four of the hugely successful ITV episodes and Director Robin Herford (Woman in Black) – bring the inscrutable detective to audiences across the UK in what promises to be one of the theatrical events of the year. Since his Oxford undergraduate days, Morse has regarded theatre director Laurence Baxter as the only truly evil man he has ever met. So what happens when, twenty-odd years later, Morse finds Baxter at the centre of a murder case that involves the on-stage death of a young actress?
This new play from award-winning playwright, Chris O’Connell has been commissioned to mark the establishment of the Belgrade Young Company. Delivering drama workshops to over 200 young people on an annual basis, the Belgrade has access to a vast array of young and local talent. all the moves has been especially written for eight of the Belgrade’s most promising young performers. In the past, the Belgrade Youth Theatre has nurtured key figures in the world of acting and theatre, such as Hollywood star Clive Owen, director Laurence Boswell, and Chris O’Connell himself, so don’t miss out on this opportunity to see Coventry’s latest emerging talent. The Young Company is the latest offshoot from the Belgrade’s Community & Education Company, which runs a range of community arts activities both at the theatre and in venues across the city.

Adventure
Paris is being terrorised by the evil Cardinal and a monstrous creature who suffers from serious mood-swings... The young sword-fighter D’Artagnan finds himself on an epic quest to save the city - and a pregnant Princess - but he will need the help of The Three Musketeers. Rumour has it they’ve gone to seed, gone past their sell-by date and gone into hiding. So can he track them down in time to save the day? Based on the iconic characters created by Alexandre Dumas, this hilarious, anarchic and utterly thrilling new production promises an unforgettable journey into enchanted forests, and around REALLY horrible baddies, as we cheer our hero D’Artagnan and heroine Constance to a victorious end. Featuring a dash of live music and a hefty dose of laughter, The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain is a wonderfully surreal re-imagining of these classic stories of friendship, love and identity. Oh… and baby-eating monsters! Age recommendation: 8+

The Stage
By Alan Pollock
Directed by Hamish Glen Following two hugely successful sell-out runs in March and November 2008, One Night in November returns to the Belgrade Theatre in November 2010 ahead of the 70th Anniversary of the Coventry Blitz. This gripping wartime love story received an overwhelming response from audiences and critics alike when it was first staged in the Belgrade’s B2 auditorium. This new revival on the theatre’s Main Stage is sure to add yet another dimension to what has already become a landmark show. One Night in November follows the story of one family’s harrowing experience of the Coventry Blitz and reflects on some of the crimes - great and small - that were committed under cover of the blackout. Did Winston Churchill have advance warning of the attack? Was Coventry sacrificed for the greater good, or to provoke America into the war? Age Recommendation: 11+

“Edward Hall’s superb, all-male company Propeller proves again the value of a true ensemble and a director who treats Shakespeare’s plays as if they’d just been written.” The Guardian (on A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2009).
Paul Robeson was a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When he got too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he was branded a traitor to his country, harassed and denied opportunities to perform or travel.
Internationally acclaimed all-male company, led by Director Ed Hall, Propeller is renowned for combining a rigorous approach to the text with an exciting, physical aesthetic to engage its audience’s imagination and bring fresh understanding to classic plays. It’s Shakespeare rediscovered and a perfect introduction to his plays. Richard III brings the War of the Roses cycle of history plays to a close in bloody fashion. Arguably Shakespeare’s most villainous King, we watch in horror and delight as Richard murders his way to the throne, unable to resist his cruel wit and dark humour. This is a hugely entertaining and diabolical adventure that tells the story of one man’s journey to heaven, then back to hell. www.propeller.org.uk Running Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Evenings: 7.45pm Matinee: Sat 20 Nov, 2.30pm

Circus The Four Chapters from Hell - Celebrating 15 bloody years. It is a staggering 15 years since The Circus of Horrors first trampled the bloody boards. It has since toured around the World achieving cult status and has dragged Circus screaming and shouting into the 21st century and beyond.
Tues 14 – Thurs 23 December The Cheeky Chappies are a comedy music hall act that have never given up and, as if to prove the point, they’re returning to B2 this December with a new and improved version of last year’s hit show. The perfect alternative Christmas treat for grown-ups!
Following the huge success of The Asylum and The Day of the Dead, The Circus of Horrors has had a major revamp; it is back rockin’ and shockin’ with this fang-tastic, specially created show.
Rooted in the variety theatre of the 1930s these two inept, saucy old buffers will once again host a variety of songs, scenes, sketches and festive silliness themed around the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Age recommendation: 12+
“ The Cheeky Chappies, aka Paul Nolan and Robert Wilkinson, offer an adult alternative to panto that is perfect for rounding off the office Christmas party or for those seeking some festive cheer.” Coventry Telegraph Recommended adult fun.

Coming in Spring 2011
Coventry. 1979. A city of strife in the factories and violence on the streets. It’s hard being 16 – but something’s stirring in the garages and living rooms of the city. Music offers a way out for spiky Gary – a fish out of water on the Canley Park estate – posh boy Nick and cheeky Sonya, whose Asian parents think she’s doing after-school drama… Tension is building between Gary and his brother and father – both track workers at the car plant. But as industrial relations reach boiling point and Gary’s band takes its first few tentative steps, an act of shocking violence propels Nick, Sonya and Gary’s family towards a decision that will change all their lives forever.
Chekhov’s masterpiece – a tragic-comic and profoundly poignant story of disillusionment and misplaced love receives a new treatment in this exciting co-production.
Too Much Pressure is writer Alan Pollock’s follow up to his smash-hit Coventry Blitz play, One Night in November, which is revived this season in a new Main Stage production. This vital new play will be directed by Hamish Glen and features a live soundtrack written and performed by Coventry band The Ripps. Evenings: 8pm* *Press Night: Tues 1 Feb, 7pm Matinees: Sats 5, 12 & 19 Feb & Wed 16 Feb, 2.45pm
The internationally-acclaimed Helena Kaut-Howson known for her sensual and innovative approach to classics directs this new version of Uncle Vanya.

Belgrade Out and About
Infra-red Hearing System
An infra-red hearing system is installed in both theatres. Receivers, for use with hearing aids, and headsets, no hearing aid necessary, are available at Box Office and may be reserved at the time of booking.
Captioned Performance
The Belgrade is offering in-house captioned performances with captioners trained by Stagetext. Captioning is a way of converting the spoken word into visible text, that provides people with a hearing loss access to live performance. Captions are produced by a computer and a display unit installed on or near the stage and are delivered by an accredited captioner.
Sign Language Interpreted Performance
Many of our productions are sign language interpreted.
Integrated Performance
Sign Language Interpreted performances with the signers joining the performers on stage integrating with the action. (Panto only)
Building on its national reputation as the home of Theatre in Education (TiE), the Belgrade Theatre runs a year-round programme of drama-related activities for young people and the wider community. Participants develop skills in devising, writing and acting and are supported to create and put on productions that reflect the experiences of local people, with a particular focus on marginalised groups. The current programme includes five Youth Theatre groups: Acting Out, a two year work-related learning programme recognised nationally as a model of best practise; The New Black, a programme targeting the city’s newest arrivals; and Theatre in Education tours.
3rd Community Festival - Stories celebrating the Diversity of Coventry Following on from the success of the Mysteries, the Belgrade presented its third Community Festival in July 2010. The festival centred on stories of immigration to Coventry – stories of both those communities arriving and those who were here already. The performance week comprised six new plays written by participants of the Critical Mass Programme and performed by Community & Education Company groups.
Audio Described Performance
Many of our productions are audio described. Please note that audio descriptions usually commence 15 minutes prior to the performance. Headsets for the description may be reserved at time of booking.
Strobe Free Performance
Following on from this, the C&E Company will be providing schools, youth groups and community centres with the opportunity to use drama or film to explore the topics of industry, the Mysteries and immigration. This will happen through one-off workshops, taking place in the beginning of the Autumn Term. Organisations interested in engaging with this programme should contact the Belgrade as below.
Performances of Cinderella free of any strobe lighting effects.
Hearing and Guide Dogs
Young Company
Hearing and Guide dogs are most welcome, please ask about a dog space when booking. We can provide information in large print, Braille, on cassette or CD.
With so many young people collaborating with the Belgrade on such a wide range of projects, the C&E Company is obviously confronted with a considerable display of talent in the performing arts. To help to develop this talent, we have formed a Young Company, to provide opportunities for members of the C&E groups who have shown a particular ability and commitment to working in theatre and whom we feel are ready to take part in a more intensive production process. Their first performance will be on 4th November see page 15 for more information.
Lift Access
The Capital Development Project has made all public areas accessible. The lifts can be found next to the café bar, for the Main Stage and B2.
Wheelchair Access
In the Main Stage, we have up to six seats in Box E which are available for wheelchair users. In B2, there is space for six wheelchair users - four on the ground floor and one on each balcony. Please see the Diary section on pages 38 – 39 for performance dates. A drop-off point for people with limited mobility is available via Upper Well Street at the top of Belgrade Square, outside Bella Italia – the point is marked by stainless steel bollards and is approx 20m from the B2 entrance. Parking is not permitted at this point.
28
Accessible toilets are available on both levels. The Belgrade Theatre is a public building and therefore smoke-free in all areas. For further information on access, contact us on 024 7625 6431. This information is continually reviewed. Please check the website for updates.
Critical Mass This marginalised writing programme targeting the city’s new communities has been growing in success and momentum over the past two years. The Belgrade is hoping to run a third programme in January 2011. If you are interested in taking part, please register your details as below. The Belgrade C&E Company work in partnership with organisations across the city. Organisations or individuals wishing to get involved in the C&E Company should contact the C&E Administrator
Karen Nicholson on 024 7684 6741 or communityadmin@belgrade.co.uk
