Welcome to our 2009 Autumn Season It’s been really encouraging to see so many people flooding into the theatre and having a really good time despite the current economic climate. In times like these people seem to try and get more out of life and do things that matter, like spending more time with friends and family, doing things that make them laugh and engaging more with the arts. We’ve always believed in the power of theatre to enrich people’s lives so it’s pleasing to see more and more people discovering its value.
In addition the theatre will be alive with the activities of our community groups as well as welcoming in local theatre companies such as Talking Birds, who are working on a new idea for a show. Out front we’re delighted that the beautifully landscaped Belgrade Square is now complete. We’ve appointed the award-winning caterers Petit Gourmand to take over our bars, café and restaurant so watch out for delicious new menus served both in the theatre and outside in the new square. I’d like to thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you back at the Belgrade soon.

Musical Drama The Belgrade Theatre Coventry, in co-production with Vanishing Point and Royal Lyceum Theatre, in association with Tramway, Glasgow presents
In a new version created by Vanishing Point. Based on the original by John Gay. Directed by Matthew Lenton. A man who loves money, might as well be contented with one guinea, as I with one woman. The future’s here. It’s a brave new world, but wherever there’s a world there’s an underworld: muggers, smugglers, prostitutes, thieves. Nobody plays by the rules, least of all MacHeath – bandit, hedonist, superhero to some, villain to others. In a world of imitators and wannabes, he’s the genuine article. But where he goes, trouble is sure to follow. MacHeath has married Polly Peachum. But he fancies Lucy Lockit. Lucy Lockit fancies MacHeath, but Polly doesn’t want to share. Mr Peachum wants MacHeath’s head, so does Mr Lockit. And the law. With so many enemies, it’s hard to tell who your friends are. John Gay’s 17th century play, The Beggar’s Opera has been reconfigured in to our not too distant future: a dark, seedy, absurd, visually rich and cruelly comic co-production featuring brand new live music from Alasdair Macrae and A Band Called Quinn, cutting edge production design and a large cast of leading performers. This promises to be one of the most entertaining theatre events of 2009. Recommended for ages 14+

Chilling Drama
“Life’s a game of cards. We all like to live dangerously from time to time and none of us hold the cards we should.” How quickly life can change. One moment, one conversation, two men and before you know it the world is a different place. It’s a cold wintry Paris night and down the dimly lit street a man returns home to his luxury apartment. He’s content, it’s almost Christmas and his family are waiting asleep upstairs. His one mistake is to stop and talk to the beggar living in the doorway. Just a few centimes is all this stranger asks for, but at what cost? Babylone is a stylish and engrossing tale of suspense with echoes of classic film noir. It’s a chilling glimpse of a fleeting relationship that twists and turns as the cards of fate are laid bare. Acclaimed French playwright Jean-Marie Besset has received numerous awards and received ten nominations for the The Molière Prize and his original French production was a huge hit in Paris in 2004. Don’t miss this chance to see this skilfully adapted British Premiere which promises to be one of the most memorable performances of the season.

Panto “Is this the best panto I’ve seen in years? Oh yes. It is.” Coventry Telegraph for Dick Whittington.
Every year thousands of families make the Belgrade Theatre’s legendary panto an essential part of their Christmas celebrations. This year’s enchanting tale of heroic adventure, true love, messy mayhem and lots of festive frivolity is destined to be the most beautiful and beastly yet. Once upon a time in a land far away there was a handsome but selfish young prince. He fell foul of an evil sorceress and was doomed to spend the next 500 years hidden in his castle in the guise of a grotesque beast. Could anyone ever love such a beast and unlock the cruel spell? Spectacular costumes, wonderful sets and loads of laughs bring this enchanting tale to life. You can’t possibly miss Coventry favourite, Andy Hockley, as the glamorous Dame Dorothy-Do-It, whizzing around on her turbo-charged Hoover! You’ll also meet a host of other characters including the arrogant bully Eugene, his sidekick Porky Pimple and of course, Beauty, with her captivating love that saves the beast from his ill-fated destiny. Make-believe, music and lots of magic fun means a “beauty-full” Christmas treat for all the family!

Alternative Christmas Show “Coventry’s very own show business legends are as endearing as they are entertaining – never less than fantastic fun and always great value”
The Belgrade Theatre Coventry presents
Coventry Times
Written by Paul Nolan and Robert Wilkinson Directed by Hamish Glen
“A terrific show... genuinely funny... you won’t find better entertainment than this anywhere.” Coventry Telegraph
Dick and Ginger, The Cheeky Chappies, are a comedy music hall act that have never given up. Rooted in the variety theatre of the 1930s these two inept, saucy old buffers are tireless in their pursuit of fame, fortune and global stardom. This yuletide, they have invited their celebrity friends to entertain you as they host a variety of songs, scenes, sketches and festive silliness themed around the Twelve Days of Christmas. On arrival at the theatre, Dick is greeted with an unwelcome surprise. Ginger has forgotten to mention there is no budget and no scenery - even the interval has been cut. To make matters worse the Stage Manager would prefer to be in the pub, and is enthusiastically obstructive. Determined that the show must go on, The Cheeky Chappies embark on a unique evening of festive fun and frolics with a little help from the audience and a dash of sauciness thrown in for good measure. Join them in B2 for an unforgettable show packed with mirth, merriment, and festive tomfoolery delivered in their own inimitable style. Miss this show and you’ve missed Christmas. Recommended adult fun.

Des O’Connor is a world-class star and ultimate entertainer. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a true show-business legend live on stage for a wonderful evening of comedy, laughter and music.
This spectacular show is a magical trip back to the heyday of pure, classic Cliff and The Shadows, and features over 30 of their greatest vocal hits like Move It, Livin’ Doll, The Young Ones, Bachelor Boy, and many more.
The RSC comes to the Belgrade Theatre with a critically acclaimed and blisteringly topical play by Roy Williams, one of the UK’s most exciting playwrights.
Kytsun Wolfe looks, sings and talks like Cliff. It is easy to forget that you’re not at an actual Cliff and The Shadows concert. A nostalgic Rock ’n’ Roll experience and quintessential homage to the incomparable Sir Cliff Richard and The Shadows.
Before they depart for active service, two young soldiers make the most of a drunken night out with friends in an English market town. Their bravado is soon crushed by their tour of duty and the civilian life they return to is now as alien to them as the desert they left behind. Recently reworked to acknowledge the shifting mood of a country now witnessing the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, this timely and explosive play examines the aftermath of a war whose conflicts rage far beyond the battleground. “Days of Significance is a frankly terrifying and utterly compelling examination of the morality of sending young men to fight a war when they are ill-equipped to do so in every way... Maria Aberg’s brilliantly choreographed production roars with raucous, wounded life.” The Guardian Contains strong language, violence and some scenes of an adult nature.

Get more involved
The Belgrade Theatre Community & Education Company runs a wide range of activities for young people, aiming to make original and high quality work that bears witness to the experiences of local people and marginalised groups. The current programme includes five youth theatres; Acting Out, a two-year work-related learning programme; The New Black, a programme targeting the city’s newest communities; and Theatre in Education (TiE) tours.
The Mysteries – In Our Own Words
The Belgrade Theatre plays a major role in the economic and social life of the region. We rely on the generous support of many organisations including its main funders Coventry City Council and Arts Council England but it also needs the support of the public, business, trusts and foundations. There are a range of different opportunities to get more involved and help support us.

Belgrade Out & About
Naming a seat is a special way of acknowledging your support of the theatre, celebrating your own special occasion or remembering someone who has enjoyed their time here. In recognition of your support, your name will be engraved on a plaque, which will be mounted on a seat of your choice for a minimum of 10 years, and will also be printed in all Belgrade Theatre produced programmes during 2009. These seats are available for £250 and there are opportunities to spread the cost of this by setting up a Standing Order.

In July ’09 200 young people re-told stories from the Bible and the Qur’an. The performances comprised modern re-tellings of stories from the Bible and the Qur’an, emphasising the shared heritage of Islam and Christianity at a time when the two faiths are often polarised. One-off workshops and short residencies to explore further the commonalities between stories in the Bible and the Qur’an follow for the Autumn term. Any organisations interested in this programme should get in touch on the details below.
The New Black
Outreach Youth Theatre
The Belgrade’s programme of work for and with Black and Minority Communities currently includes playwriting courses – for adults and young people, a Black Youth Theatre group, and projects with the Muslim Community. The results of this work are celebrated in the New Black Showcase, in B2 this October and will be followed with a production inspired by the city’s history of immigration in the 2010 Summer Term.
The Belgrade’s Community Forum has been successful in a bid to the Youth Opportunities Fund and has enabled the continuation of our successful Youth Theatre groups in Canley and Tile Hill who will be working on a show to be performed in Spring 2010.
