Post-Show Discussions We are in negotiations with BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio for Belgrade Theatre productions. Check our website for confirmation of times and dates.
Welcome to our new season It’s nearly a year since we re-opened our doors and welcomed people back into the rejuvenated Belgrade Theatre. It marked the start of an exciting journey for all of us and I’m delighted to be able to look back on what has proved to be an immensely successful period for the theatre. We re-opened with a very ambitious series of rarely performed plays with the distinct intention of giving the Belgrade a very clear identity amongst other local theatres and putting us back on the nation’s cultural map. The ambition of the season certainly made a real impact with people as we’ve seen a massive rise in new audiences visiting the theatre from all over the country as well as a huge increase in the amount of reviews and articles about the Belgrade in the national press. We’ve had a fantastic response to our home-produced work, particularly the sell-out successes of Scenes from a Marriage and One Night in November. So much so, in fact, that we are currently in negotiations to transfer Scenes from a Marriage to a West End theatre and One Night in November will be returning to B2 this autumn by popular demand. Our new home produced show this season, The House of Bernarda Alba, is widely regarded as one of playwright Federico Garcia Lorca’s masterpieces. To complement this show we will be holding a Lorca Symposium on Saturday 1 November – further details to be announced. Our work with local communities remains at the front and centre of everything we do and in April we held our
first ever Community Festival, In Our Own Words. The event saw 74 local young people collaborate with 21 different artists to create three new theatre productions and a film. Over a thousand people came along to watch and the event was a wonderful success, which we’ll definitely look to repeat in the future. I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve achieved on our journey so far and with your continued and much valued support, I’m sure we’ll continue to enjoy many great seasons to come.
“ I have nothing but admiration for Hamish's artistic vision. I know how difficult it is to run a theatre, and when I saw the programme he was proposing, my jaw dropped.” Sir Trevor Nunn

This year’s biggest West End comedy hit is set to take the UK by storm as Bill Kenwright’s critically acclaimed ‘Savagely Funny’, ‘Seriously Hilarious’, and ‘Dazzling’ production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular goes on tour.
One of the greatest British TV comedies ever written comes to Coventry this autumn. With a star-studded cast, including Vicki Michelle (Yvette in the original series) and Jeffrey Holland (Hi-De-Hi), this stunning new stage production follows the hilarious adventures of René, a hapless café owner in war-torn occupied France, as he and his wife Edith struggle to keep a priceless portrait, stolen by the Nazis, and hidden in a sausage in their cellar whilst aiding two bumbling British airmen return to England.
It’s party time at the Hopcroft’s and the only present they want is to succeed in scaling the social ladder. Havoc ensues at the drinks party they hold to impress their high powered friends - but that’s nothing compared to what happens over the next two years when the friends return their hospitality.
René, caught in the middle of this joyous mayhem must also keep secret from his wife his long-running affairs with two waitresses or losing his cherished café may be the least of his problems... A storm brewing. Passion and betrayal. A family torn apart. Sat 25 October – Sat 8 November In the suffocating heat of summer, Bernarda Alba’s house holds three generations of women in mourning. With few options for a life away from their grasping mother, five sisters fight each other for the attentions of the one man who could offer marriage and escape. When Bernarda announces “For the eight years of our mourning not even a breath of wind from the street will find its way into this house”, her youngest and most passionate daughter begins to rebel, leading to a chain of events which will see the whole house buckle under the pressure of desire, longing and envy. The House of Bernarda Alba was the last play written by the celebrated Spanish writer, Federico García Lorca and was made into a successful TV film in 1991 starring Glenda Jackson and Joan Plowright.

Saturday 8 – Saturday 29 November Back by popular demand after a hugely successful sell-out run earlier this year. This gripping wartime love story set during the Coventry Blitz received an overwhelming response and public and critical acclaim when it premiered last March reflecting on some of the crimes that were committed under cover of blackout. The story follows Michael, an Oxford tutor who has been forced to turn his literary skills to deciphering codes at Bletchley Park, and Katie, a headstrong 18 year old who lives with her family in Coventry. Katie has no idea how terrible the threat of war is – but Michael does. This revival is generously supported by the David and Sandra Burbidge Charitable Trust.

The Night Before Christmas is an irreverently cheeky comedy with a totally different version of Christmas to the one you grew up believing. Three friends catch an intruder on Christmas Eve. Claiming to be a stray elf, his startling story of an addiction to ‘Christmas dust’ and the promise of any wish they want, makes them stop and re-evaluate what Christmas really means to them. Projected onto a big screen in a full B2 for the official opening of the festival, the film gave larger-than-life voice to the thoughts and experiences of young people living on the edge of Coventry’s regeneration.
“ Raised lots of important issues for young people, fantastic” “ A wonderful mix of laughter and tears” Audience members
The First Time I Saw Snow
Explored issues arising from the new incoming communities in the North of the city, based on the experiences of Coventry school children and presented by professional performers.
“ I would just like to say that this is the best performance I have ever seen in my life” Audience member, aged 10
“ I thought it was great – perfection. I would think it a shame if the whole world didn’t see it” Audience member
Told with the true voice of Coventry’s young people – original, passionate and direct, this fast-paced fusion of theatre, dance and spoken word invited audiences to a world that adults don’t often see.
“ Nice to see that there are talented youngsters here in Coventry” “ Can’t wait for the next production” Audience members
This collaboration between the Belgrade’s in-house and outreach youth theatres, and Talking Birds, delved into the history of Coventry’s industry, with a ride through the City’s mining past, the decline of the car industry, into the future and outer space...
“ Absolutely fantastic – brilliant storyline, excellent acting” “ Stunning – I love it because it reminds me of the old Coventry, and the new Coventry as well” Audience members
Get Involved The Belgrade Theatre runs a wide range of activities for young people, and welcomes contact from anyone interested in getting involved. We are currently particularly encouraging young people from Black and Ethnic Communities to work with us through the following projects:
Critical Mass
Black Youth Theatre
The First Time I Saw Snow
A free ‘Introduction to Playwriting’ course for young writers of black and minority ethnic backgrounds, in collaboration with London’s Royal Court Theatre, running November ‘08 to February ‘09.
Developed with the Zion Outreach Project and currently working towards a performance in B2 in February. Please get in touch if you would like to develop performance skills, learn about your heritage and make theatre.
Due to the enthusiastic response from schools in spring 2008, the Belgrade hopes to tour to schools in Coventry and beyond in spring or autumn 2009. If your school or organisation is interested, please get in touch.
Not sure if it’s for you? Taster workshops are being held in the autumn. Alternatively, apply by submitting a short piece of writing by 31 October 2008.
“ At school, we don’t talk about it... so I want to learn more about my culture.”
“ The children were transfixed by the performance and the messages”
“ Critical Mass has changed my life”

Name a 50th Anniversary Seat
A producing theatre plays a major role in the economic and social life of a region and a city thrives with an ambitious theatre at its heart. The Belgrade relies on the generous support of many organisations. The theatre’s main funders are Coventry City Council and Arts Council, West Midlands but it also needs the support of business, trusts and foundations and the public. There are a range of opportunities to get involved with the Belgrade Theatre and support the exciting range of work that it offers.
Support the exciting work at the Belgrade Theatre and have the chance to win big cash prizes four times a week with the Belgrade Theatre Lottery. For just £1 a week, players have four chances to win up to £10,000 by correctly guessing the second digit of the temperatures in six pre-determined European cities. For more information contact David Jane, Head of Development on 024 7684 6722 or email djane@belgrade.co.uk
20
To help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening in 1958, the Belgrade Theatre is offering a limited opportunity to name one of 50 seats in either of its two auditoria. As well as having your name engraved on a plaque, which will be mounted on a seat of your choice for a minimum of 10 years, your name will also be engraved into a piece of public art which has been commissioned to celebrate this occasion and will be unveiled at the end of 2008. The names of everyone who has donated will also appear in programmes for our own-produced work throughout 2008. Naming a seat is a special way of acknowledging your support of the theatre, celebrating your own special occasion, or remembering someone who has enjoyed their time here. These limited edition seats are available for £250 and there are opportunities to spread the cost of this by setting up a Standing Order. For more information on how you can support the Belgrade Theatre, please contact David Jane, Head of Development on 024 7684 6722 or email djane@belgrade.co.uk
The Belgrade Theatre recognises the enormous impact of climate change on the world and feels it should do all it can to reduce its carbon footprint. As part of this policy, the Belgrade Theatre brochure is printed on paper produced at a mill that is certified with the ISO14001 environmental management standard. It is produced from 100% recycled fibre and without the use of chlorine. Brochure created by www.oyster-design.com

The Belgrade is offering in-house captioned performances with captioners trained by Stagetext. Captioning is a way of converting the spoken word into visible text, that provides people with a hearing loss with access to live performance. A captioned performance is delivered live by an accredited captioner. Open captions also include sound effects and off stage noises.
Strobe Free Performance Performances free of any strobe lighting effects.
Integrated Performance Sign Language Interpreted performances with the signers joining the performers on stage integrating with the action.
