Spring/Summer 2018

Welcome
Welcome to our Spring/Summer Season.
As you can imagine, we’re absolutely thrilled with the news that Coventry has been awarded City of Culture 2021. It’s an incredible opportunity for the city, and we’re very much looking forward to playing a major part in the year’s events.
Speaking of exciting future events, this summer all of our community groups will come together to work on a large-scale production in the former Coventry Evening Telegraph building opposite the Theatre. The production will play alongside a show from Mercurial Dance, and I’m sure it will be a fantastic spectacle.
Elsewhere in the season we have the usual mix of drama, music, musicals and comedy. I hope there’s plenty in there for you to enjoy, whatever your taste, and I look forward to seeing you back at the Belgrade this spring. Hamish Glen, Artistic Director

The Leftovers is a comic and stirring contemporary musical from Sheep Soup Productions, creators of hit musical Mrs Green and graduates of Nottingham’s BAFTA award-winning Television Workshop.
Following the sudden death of Jodie, occasional gig reviewer and the definition of misadventure, some of her friends join forces in a Nottingham recording studio. Local singer-songwriter Hayley has penned a memorial song for Jodie, but the makeshift band can't seem to agree on what their late friend would have wanted from a musical tribute. Are they here to pay their respects or to alleviate their guilt? Or is this just an intense form of music therapy?
Auditorium: B2
School friend Angie has returned to find closure.Yaz helped Jodie recapture her youth, but craved a deeper connection. Old flame Russ wants to know how much his brief fling with Jodie really meant. Jim is just trying to keep the creative chaos on schedule. The Leftovers brings Sheep Soup's innovative and comedic brand of contemporary musicals to the Belgrade Theatre. It's a heartfelt and hilarious look at the pitfalls of artistic interpretation and the melody of grief, with a truly unforgettable original score.

2nd week of July 2018
The iconic, 1950s Coventry Evening Telegraph building is a landmark. Its storeys are heavy with stories. The dusty air of the now abandoned newsroom is thick with them - flying from desk to desk soundtracked by the faint, staccato echo of long-silenced typewriters, dashing to deliver the day’s deadline copy.
Situated just over the road from the Belgrade Theatre - another hub for city storytelling - the Coventry Evening Telegraph building will soon enjoy a new lease of life as a beautiful hotel. But before that, for a brief moment in time, it will become a theatre.
This architectural gem will host two extraordinary, site-specific productions using drama, digital, puppetry and dance to explore the city’s rich history.
Venue: Coventry Telegraph Building
One show sees the Belgrade Theatre community groups take audiences on an exciting journey against a looming deadline, around the cavernous building and through the last 50 years of Coventry life.
In the other show, Mercurial Dance offer audiences a unique cabaret inspired by their very own, personal memories. The action plays out in the Telegraph’s foyer where generations of people came to share their news with the paper. Hold the presses, and become part of the story as you join us on this thrilling journey through time.
Taking place the 2nd week of July 2018. Keep checking the website for details. 34
