ABOUT US RA is a firm offering comprehensive professional services in architecture, interior, landscape and project management. Through responsible design and competent project management, RA pledge to uphold the fundamental aim, which is the pursuit of professional excellence. At RA, we believe that a building project is successful only if we have been able to work with the client towards an accurate definition of needs and goals, and ensure that functional, aesthetic and budget requirements are satisfied. The ultimate solution however is to arrive to an architectural solution that enriches life by bringing harmony to the environment.
Ar. Razin Mahmood FPAM, th and founder of Razin Architec ated from Louisiana State Unive Rouge, USA, did his internship Texas. Razin Architects has for 16 years consistently strived and for better architecture in the soc its inception, his practice has w awards for various projects, and recent was Gold for Sustainabi Awards for Architecture 2014, fo Nusa Idaman. PRINCIPAL shelter, retreat, work, sleep, and so on until today, Razin who is often inspired by architects who practice green and sustainability design stands firm on his belief that as an architect, the fundamental responsibility is to seek problems and solve problems for the people, instead of chasing after trends. Today, he is actively involved in Iskandar Malaysia Development such as East Ledang, Medini and Puteri Harbour to name a few. His current scope of works ranges from high-end residences, low rise repetitive housing to high rise mixed-use development. Yet, despite of his flexibility in dealing with various types of projects, his personal favourites have always been the small projects - and Surau Nusa Idaman is another evidence of his continuing passion for sustainable architecture.
Razin insists his team in becoming responsible designers. “Sustainability” is not just a technological quest which may be more suitable as an engineering and technological pursuit, but also a design endeavor which all architects should be aiming for. It also puts the focus back on the architect – the architect becomes the main facilitator which brings all the various elements together to achieve the sustainable objectives. Sustainable Architecture can be achieved through both “High-Tech” and “Low-Tech” means. Some of the most effective strategies are the most “Low-Tech” or even “NoTech”. Probably the most important action is to go back to fundamental requirement of living and working, while striving towards optimum comfort. When the need for space and energy is reduced, the consumption will naturally become more efficient.

Bandar Dato’ Onn is a newly developed township in Johor Bahru. In order to promote the new township, the developer held a design competition to build a signature club house and sales gallery. We proposed garden concept and subsequently won the competition. The main design feature of the club house is the completely open-air circulation space at the centre of the building. The central area is filled with tall trees which provide shade and filter bright sunlight into soft dappled light. On the first floor, the visitors can saunter through tree foliage, almost emulating the tree top walk experience. The club house also optimizes natural lighting through plenty of glass openings, besides optimizing view towards surrounding area. The building also incorporates rainwater harvesting system for landscape and external uses.

The house was called Baan Tara, which, in Thai, means Water House. This reflects the home’s unique floating feeling, created by having an abundance of water around the four individual pavilions. The property revolves around the concept of “land is luxury”, that the simplicity of feeling grass beneath their feet is the ultimate luxury.
Only a fortress-like boundary wall and rooftops can be seen from the outside of Baan Tara. A wide car porch fronts the entrance. Within the walls lies the owner’ private haven; It’s a home that seemingly floats and appears to be suspended between land and sky, thanks to the still, reflecting waters.

Water is the connection between the spaces. It also imparts a zen-like tranquility to the place. Alignment is an important factor when designing this space. That was why the entrance is not in the centre of the wall, as that would mean a lack of privacy for the owners’ sleeping quarters that directly overlook the lawn and sala. Even the lone frangipani tree is planted to a side so it does not obstruct the view.
Baan Tara is well-maintained and receives several awards of its architecture and uniqueness. From this house, luxury is a lifestyle, something without monetary value and that can be enjoyed. The color and culture of Malaysia were portraits. It is the clarity of basic idea in tropical planning by using the whole site, with the clever use of water element, vernacular yet modern.

This public Muslim prayer hall for 200 people in Taman Nusa Idaman Nusajaya, was buillt entirely with private donation. Budget was the biggest constraint and the challenge was to have a place that not only protects its users from the elements, but also to be a mini icon or a landmark that will be the pride of this new neighbourhood. The solution is a simple back-to-fundamental tropical shelter - one big umbrella roof with perforated perimeter walls to promote cross ventilation.
37 SURAU NUSA IDAMAN
The common brick walls are left unplastered and all piping and wiring are left exposed. Trees planted inside the perimeter of the praying area become a decoration that softens the hard edged fort like walls. This surau is probably the first in the country to have an all LED light fittings powered entirely by electricity from solar photovoltaic panels, made possible by funds from earth loving donors. The place is planned to be a symbol of progression which shall be the pride of the congregation.

MADRASAH MEDINI
Musola Medini applies the concept of a mosque being multi functional with the prime role of facilitating the creation of an excellent Muslim community. Therefore, apart from fulfilling its basic spiritual function, the design also aims to be used by the community for education, recreation, cultural and even sports activies.

Ar. Razin incorporates a large overspill area ‘decorated’ with trees within the complex that acts as an open space to promote communal activities and providing natural ventilation to internal spaces. The design of this Islamic Religious Complex comprising of a small 970sqft musolla, education facilities
such as Islamic kindergarden and ancillary commercial spaces goes beyond the traditional notion and expectation of a mosque. A mosque will no longer be a place only for pious elderly man; instead, it is able to attract any level of generation especially youth within the community.

MASJID SG. PROPOSAL Pontian | Johor
DURIAN
Client: AJK MASJID SG. DURIAN Located in Serkat Pontian, old mosques which was previously built on the site hundred years ago was demolished and replaced with this new 2500sqft minimalist designed mosque made of concrete, steel structure and glass roof and facade. Free from fancy ornamentation and iconic dome structure, the concept of the mosque was focusing more on its space planning; creating a space not only for praying but also creating overspill area to accommodate other communal activities by the local ‘kampung’ people. Similar to Surau Nusa Idaman, Ar. Razin was very much inspired by our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W whom would gather his companions and Muslims during those days and held congregational prayer such as Jumaah or Eid prayer and even iftaar during Ramadhan in open outdoor space. In order to respond to our climate, the praying area is sheltered with roof structure that allows stack effect which eliminates hot air from the building. The praying area is not secluded with walls but with sliding doors that can be open up allowing cross ventilation. The mosque is currently under construction and expected to be completed in mid 2015.
