How you do the small things…
A
familiar adage has resonated with me lately, “How you do the small things, is how you do the big things.” Perhaps I’ve been thinking about this because I’m in the middle of making some significant shifts in my business. How I manage and execute every detail - big and small - matters; from the way I communicate with my clients, the words I choose, how I answer questions, to actual implementation and follow through. Do you approach small tasks and obstacles with enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and integrity? Then you probably approach bigger challenges and goals in the same manner. If pessimism, lack of focus or complacency is the way in which you go about any aspect of your business, that same energy is likely seeping into other parts of your business, too. It’s helpful to do a periodic self-assessment, or at least spend some time paying close attention to how you’re doing the small, seemingly insignificant tasks in your business. You’re probably approaching the bigger things in your business in the same manner. Big or small, how you do these things all have a direct impact on the success or failure of your business. Are you responsive to emails, voicemails, or requests from clients, prospects, colleagues and staff? Or do you put them off? Do you dedicate time to organizing your tasks and time commitments? Or do you haphazardly go through the week not feeling productive because you’re just doing what you can, when you can? Are you prioritizing effectively? 80% of what we produce will come from 20% of our actions. Do all your actions reflect what you say and how you want to be perceived? Do your partners and affiliations reflect the same values you want reflected in your business?

develop the most obvious competencies such as marketing and sales as well as the less obvious skills such as cash management, human resources and management. When you fail to develop the skills required to run a high-performing business you’ll quickly discover how challenging it can be to move to the next level in your business. In the worst scenarios you’ll be trapped in a struggling business.
STAGES OF SUCCESS IN A SATURATED INDUSTRY Evolve from technician to a high-performing fitness business owner

ave you noticed that getting clients and running a successful fitness business is getting tougher? If so, you’re not alone. The world is in on the secret and sees the opportunity in fitness. Trouble is, most of them aren’t in it for the right reasons and it’s affecting great trainers. In a perfect world, great trainers would easily be able to capture most of the market and have the biggest businesses. But, like any rapidly growing industry, that’s not always the case. Running a successful fitness business isn’t just about being great at your craft.

FROM TOP TECHNICIAN TO BUSINESS OWNER As few as 10 years ago it was easy to transition from great technician to successful business owner. There was money to be made if you simply delivered results as a personal trainer and were great at your craft. Now, with new fitness business popping-up on every corner, you need to develop business skills if you want to thrive. Too many trainers who are passionate about helping their clients and great at what they do are barely making enough to pay their bills. High-performing fitness business owners, are now having to
REQUIRED SKILLS: MARKETING, SALES AND SYSTEMS Marketing and sales are the first skills that you need to develop if you want to succeed in the business of fitness, but they aren’t the end. You can only outsell your mistakes for so long before it catches up to you. There’s a popular saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” As a personal trainer you never anticipated having to master the skills required to run a great business. You hoped that you would be able to make a career out of being a great trainer. If you’ve experienced any success it’s apparent that being great at delivering results is a “pay-to-play” requirement of the profession. And sometimes, great marketers will survive simply because they can attract more new clients even in the case they are not delivering an optimal service. Marketing doesn’t make you a bad trainer or speak any less of your character. It provides you the opportunity to attract more clients, which in turn gives you the opportunity to positively impact more lives. Avoiding the opportunity to develop marketing and sales skills will be the first stage of failure for your business. Used for good, marketing will produce positive results for your business. Those that thrive because they avoid marketing are the exception, not the rule. It’s the equivalent to the person who can eat a pint of ice cream every day and have 6-pack abs year-round. Once you have discovered the power of marketing and sales it’s time to create systems that free-up your time. Without systems you’ll simply be a victim of your own success. It’s quite prevalent in fitness; look at the popular trainer who must work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week to maintain his/her income.
A successful business owner will find ways to replicate their success. They build a team that allows them to grow without spending more time working in the business. This becomes possible through the development of systems that allow your trainers and staff to replicate the results you would produce. AVOID THE SUCCESS TRAP As you first venture into developing systems, the biggest obstacle you’ll have to overcome is the mindset that you are the only one capable of delivering results. Your process may be unique, but it should not be dependent on you delivering the service. Focus on finding people that can deliver 80% of the results you can deliver. This simple tip will help you quickly expand your business and deliver incredible results. Top business owners will bring in team members who can make-up for their weaknesses and help them deliver better results than they could deliver on their own. Finding the right people to add to your team is challenging. The first step is being able add revenue to support your team growth through marketing. Once you’ve mastered sales, learned how to attract clients and
developed systems to replicate your results, it’s time to create a process to discover amazing talent. Top-level fitness business owners are now creating processes that allow them to recruit, identify and evaluate individuals that can bring more value to their business. Keeping this talent requires a great culture. Therefore, the highest performing fitness business owners are shifting their focus from developing training skills to developing team building skills. MANAGE YOUR SUCCESS AND DISCOVER GREATNESS At some point, your team will be more responsible for the day-to-day success of your business. It can be very scary! You started out being responsible for everything in your business. The growth and your client results rested solely on your shoulders. As you grow, the success of your business (and clients) will be reliant on the team. The toughest transition you will go through is becoming a great manager for your team. You started your business because you wanted to control your own destiny and didn’t want to rely on others to reach your goals.
Now it’s come full circle, you are relying on others to grow your business. You must learn how to get results through your team, and that requires being a manager and leader. At this point you stop putting out fires, you delegate important activities and your time is spent on high return on investment activities. Outside of taking the leap from employee/trainer to business owner this is the scariest point for many fitness business owners. There is a clear path to business success. Many others have experienced it and the signs are all very clear, if you know how to look for them. The time of simply being great at what you do to achieve success in the fitness industry are coming to an end. If you want to control your own destiny and build a high-performing business, you’re going to have to evolve as a fitness business owner.

2017-18 KORR Medical Technologies was founded in 1993 as a research and development firm. They developed metabolic test equipment for NASA, and in 2001, entered the market to sell that same equipment to gyms, trainers and wellness centers. KORR’s goal has been to bring VO2 Max and metabolic testing out of the lab and into the hands of fitness professionals at all levels of expertise by streamlining the user interface and decreasing the cost. Trainers know what is working with their clients, what increases retention, and what drives revenue. And trainers are buying CardioCoach by KORR. CardioCoach sales have had a 58% increase in sales over the last 4 years, with 20% of sales coming from repeat customers and referrals. KORR’s evaluation of the sales trend indicate that CardioCoach is successful due to 1) trainers have improved results in helping clients reach their goals when using data from CardioCoach, and 2) CardioCoach offers trainers a profit center. IMPROVED RESULTS Results are the life-blood of any training program. Yet how often is every client subjected to a standard number of reps, standard minutes of cardio, and routine course around the equipment? By measuring each individuals aerobic capacity, where they are burning fat calories most effectively, and what their fuel sources are throughout exercise, you can design workouts that will truly target their specific needs. This is true whether their goals are to increase endurance, lose weight, improve race performance, or address specific health and wellness concerns. PROFIT CENTER While most fitness equipment is an expenditure, CardioCoach is a profit center. VO2 Max is a premium service that can be marketed as a standalone service or as a value-add to training programs. KORR customers report gross profits from VO2 Max testing averaging $40,000 per year per facility. Current trends indicate fitness enthusiasts are demanding more data. Trainers are willing to incorporate data as long as it is sound and useful, but are wary of fly-by-night trends. CardioCoach meets both desires at a perfect crossroads: the test gives an incredible amount of data, yet the technology has been around since we’ve been sending rockets into space! Anaerobic threshold, VO2 Max, fuel sources, calories burned and EPOC are all keys to helping clients achieve their goals.

2017-18 MYZONE is a wearable fitness technology company that was created to solve the biggest issue in the fitness industry: people quitting the gym because of lack of motivation and results. MYZONE solved this problem by creating the MZ-3, which provides engaging and motivational experiences to support behavior change that makes exercise habits stick. Unlike many other activity trackers, the MYZONE MZ-3 is the only fitness tracking device based on the World Health Organization’s Physical Activity Guidelines. It uses a game-based platform and social experience that rewards effort, motivating users to work harder regardless of their ability. Throughout a workout, effort is measured in MYZONE Effort Points (MEPS) which users earn based on their heart rate during an activity. It’s through this platform that users can set personal goals and compete with friends on a leaderboard or through challenges. A recent study performed by 12 RND Fitness in Australia confirmed members’ exercise levels increase with this type of gamification. The study showed an increase in every single metric, for every club who participated, with members training for longer periods of time, more often, and at a higher effort level. The reason the use of gamification is so successful, specifically when used for fitness, is that it falls in line with creating a habit out of exercising. A habit is created when you have a trigger, a routine and rewards for completion. Let’s say one of your members is about to leave work, this could be a trigger that ‘it’s time to exercise.’ This means that when the member leaves their office job at 5pm on Monday, instinctively they know that time and action is a cue to go to the gym. The member will then head to the gym and workout with their MYZONE belt to obtain MYZONE Effort Points. The reward for this member is seeing themselves rise on the MYZONE leaderboard, earn MYZONE Effort Points or obtain social recognition from friends after completing his/her workout. The more the member gets a reward for going to the gym (such as moving up on the MYZONE leaderboard or obtaining a new status ranking within the MYZONE system), the greater the association and the dopamine release. MYZONE is designed to not just be restricted to the gym environment, the MZ-3 can be worn for almost every type of exercise allowing for regular feedback and recognition of activity.

2017-18 WHAT NFPT DOES AND WHY NFPT, National Federation of Professional Trainers, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in February 2018. NFPT’s mission to educate, assess and certify personal trainers started off as one man’s passion turned purpose. NFPT is rooted in its history and with its founder, Ron Clark. In 1988, NFPT was established as a ‘real-world’ option for personal trainer certification. NFPT’s inception was not a mission to compete with credible certifying organizations of the time, but instead to offer a comprehensive option for the passionate fitness enthusiast. Because aspiring personal trainers are often people with a lot of passion for the work, and even more motivation to help people, they may not always have a formal education in the exercise sciences. So NFPT positioned itself to be a foundational first step for entering the profession and a supportive partner for fitness trainer success. Certification providers, prior to NFPT (before the ‘90s), only offered clinical, advanced and specialty area approaches to education and certification. Ron’s growth journey, through many decades, gave him perspective that led to the concept and inception of NFPT’s ‘real-world’ approach. Ron was a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corp when he was seriously injured and underwent rehabilitation – a blessing in disguise. As a result of his injury, he got into the gym and became hooked on health, fitness and strength training. Many long, hard years spent training, working, and studying (and getting certified) led him, in 1984, to open his own small gym and private training studio. He knew that he had found his life’s work. NFPT was born to be something different. Something that wasn’t available. Something that modeled the knowledge, skills and abilities of the day-to-day successful personal trainer. NFPT, still family-owned and operated, brings it back to the basics; which can simply mean speaking plain language when talking about hard concepts. The fitness industry ebbs and flows with trendy new ways to get fit and be healthy, but the ground level basics of why and how a person’s health is improving have little to do with the latest trend. Trends are fun, and they can help us to jump start something that may not have happened otherwise…but, ultimately, achieving better health and fitness is the result of understanding why and how the body works the way it does. Inside NFPT HQ, and to the people who know him, Ron is known for his saying, “Learn to add and subtract before learning to multiply and divide.” Understanding foundational exercise principles and using this knowledge to affect the most positive change is the adding and subtracting that aspiring personal trainers should be skilled in before moving into the multiplying and dividing. NFPT Certification assesses the aspiring trainer’s knowledge and ability to affect positive change in the lives of people, no matter their fitness level. Personal trainers make a difference, every day with every workout.
