The right glass will reveal the best in a wine Ideally the combination of glass and wine should produce a perfect harmony. Sommeliers have discovered that each type of wine benefits from being drunk from a particular shape of glass. So, in conjunction with sommeliers and wine growers, Schott Zwiesel has developed a series of glass ranges, designed to draw out the characters of a wide variety of grapes – while giving you a choice of styles. So these are truly glasses which add value to wine.

Decanting has two objectives. Firstly, to separate the wine from any sediment which

CRU Classic range

CRU Classic. Reduced to the Essentials: Drinking Perfection Reduction is a word closely associated with gourmet appreciation. For example, reducing a sauce to concentrate its colour, aroma and flavour is a key element in gourmet cuisine. “Reduction” derives from “reduce”, which literally means to “bring back” or “restore” something to its original form. The new gourmet glass collection CRU Classic, demonstrates how appreciation of a wine can be enhanced through the reduction of the glass. In the case of CRU Classic, the number of glass designs has been reduced to 11 applied shapes. While the style and flow of the glasses have been returned to classic patterns. Each bowl style has been selected to enhance a different combination of senses. So each type of wine can be perfectly presented, according to its aromatic complexity and alcoholic strength. The reduction in design has also enhanced ease of use with this range. Gone are the days of a myriad of confusing stems! The CRU Classic stems can be described as being compact but with no loss of elegance. They will please both the professional restaurateur who places the emphasis on wine and the anxious “glass polisher” alike, given the design will also help to reduce the oh so “painful” breakage rate. This range of glasses will help the enthusiastic newcomer to wine to explore the world of vinophile aromas without the confusion of “special speciality glasses”. For the oenological professional, on the other hand, the CRU Classic range is an invaluable “tool of the trade”, capable of bringing out the distinctive characteristics of every style of wine while at the same time satisfying the logistical demands of a large-scale wine-tasting. Two voluminous decanters for red wine harmoniously round out this series. They combine perfect decanting characteristics and outstanding pouring behavior.

Depending on the type of wine and its aroma cluster, the flow and dynamics of a glass, between the provision of an ample area at the bowl’s base and the height and taper as it rises to the rim, is the key to enhancing first aroma then flavour. Top Ten range

Top Ten. The knowledge of Seven Sommeliers united in one range The Top Ten range was the product of a meeting between seven top sommeliers for a wine tasting event on the island of Sylt. Their aim was to develop the best glass shapes for wine tasting, while keeping the overall range within manageable proportions. The Top Ten range includes some novel glass shapes, but they are designed and tested to ensure they help to reveal wines to their best advantage. So these glasses are the concentrated essence of the sommeliers passion, skill and knowledge, realised in Tritan速 crystal glass. 22

Fullbodied red wines need to be worked and complex aromas and flavours. The wid-

of wine that is needed to be poured into

tapering rim helps to guide the released aromas to the nose, and the wine onto the

full complexity can be unleashed while the ideal drinking temperature is maintained throughout the tasting.

The shape and size of the tasting glass Ideal and the Sensus glasses are universally suited to all types of wine, red or white. Their small volume and slender bowl guide the aromas of even a small quantity of wine straight to the nose and create the ideal conditions for optimum appraisal. Sommeliers and professional jury members favour blind tasting when judging wines. It is the most objective way to explore a wine because the wine is served anonymously to the taster, i.e., he or she does not know before tasting from which winegrower or region the wine originates and can therefore sample and judge without prejudice. Special feature: one Sensus glass is black and entirely opaque. This heightens the degree of anonymity. Even the colour and legs on the side of the glass remain in the dark; so attention is focused entirely on nose and palate. Then the remainder of the sample is disposed of in the matching vessel. The perfect utensils for professional wine tasters and all those who want to school their senses!
