RACHEL PARK

Hello! My dream is to become a designer with a purpose. During my five years in university, I have come to learn of the importance of design and space and how much impact it can have in a community. As I honed my skills for architectural design and people’s experiences, I have realized my desire to pursue a career where I can take part in detailed systems thinking and design research through contexts and users to produce designs that can help make change.

URBAN ACUPUNCTURE community forge playscape wilkingsburg pittsburgh, pa

2018 -2019 | Academic Project Architectural Urban Design ASOS Studio Professors: Stefan Gruber In collaboration with: Community Forge Mariana Alberola-Rezza Ghalya Alsanea Fon Euchukanonchai Mounica Guturu Gautam Thakkar Ritchie Ju Christine Kim Shariwa Sharada Scarlet Tong Chitika Vasudeva

In collaboration as an entire studio, my contributions included the designs for the Play Island Playground as well as the implementation of the painted Learning Island. Strategy for place-making in the bottom-up transformation of cities is needed to design a micro-public space, while at the same time being concerned with designing a community engagement process. In collaboration with Community Forge and the Wilkinsburg community members in Pittsburgh, PA, decisions were defined and created opportunities for the schoolyard of the former Johnston Elementary School and thus a micro-public space was

created that promises to act as the catalyst for connecting Community forge to its surrounding context. Studies were conducted in analyzing an urban milieu, facilitating participatory design workshops with the community, developing and implementing a strategic design intervention, (or simply put — urban acupuncture).

The project focused on keeping the importance of actively and primarily communicating with a real community group when researching and developing designs for the overall masterplan. Because this project is intended to be actualized, we wanted to keep a close relationship to those who will be the clients and will be able to use our designs and hopefully foster a safer and improved urban environment than what was there previously.

6

We as a studio have held weekly community engagement sessions, especially those with the youth and performed team activities that explored the interests of the community as well as their thoughts on the design progress that was being done throughout the entire semester. It was not just a one-way conversation, rather we would continuous and consistently go back and forth to give and bring back feedback of the designs, thus creating a more personal and meaningful architect and client situation. It had proved worthy that we did the needed engagement sessions

because it allowed the design to provide ownership and confidence to those who were involved, whether that may be the designers or the clients. Because of the “bottom up ideologies that were followed, the design is not just a simple architectural product of a few architectural design students, but rather a working development that involves everyone in the community in addition to the designers.

01 urban acupuncture

To further the idea of ownership of the master plan designs, we’ve also organized and prepared an open community-wide event to invite others in the neighborhood to actively help in the implementation of the first phase of the project. The actualization of the Learning Island helped to foster friendliness and a sense of camaraderie among everyone that joined. It helped immensely to push forward the progress of the implementation of this phase as we had to finish in time for the final review presentation, which only left us with a little under a month to gather all

urban acupuncture 01

materials, prepare the initially unkept pavement surface, and finally paint on the colors and patterns needed to incorporate all of the learning elements of the design. In keeping to the theme of ambiguous design and educational learning, the design includes elements such as length measurements in yards and feet, Fibonacci sequence-inspired geometries, a chessboard, the solar system, a sundial coordinated to the exact location of the site, a running track, hopscotch, and much more.

were purposefully kept ambiguous so that there is enough room for interpretation and adaptable to all age groups as well as remain as flexible elements of design that can cater to whatever changes may occur over time. Plans are already being made to implement the Red Porch design that will be worked on by the Design Build Studio at our school in the following semesters, but we hope the other phases of the Play, Fitness, and Gathering Islands will be able to be implemented as soon as in the next few years.

Each of these separate elements come together to serve as the overall master plan that we as a collective studio have created. The first phase of the Learning Island has already been implemented thanks to the Kaboom Grant that was acquired by Community Forge as well as part of the seating and bench designs from the Gathering Island. Future moves will be made to bring the rest of the master plan to reality as more funds are obtained as resources. The designs for each “island

SUBURBIA UPZONING evolution of density in suburban maryland glen burnie, md

2019 - 2020 | Academic Project Architectural Urban Design ASOS Studio Advising Professors: Stefan Gruber + Jonathan Kline Independent Urban Design Thesis

Can the American housing disparity and the climate crisis be addressed in the Maryland suburbs to explore the development of an upzoning matrix of suburban typologies and densify zoing systems? Set in Glen Burnie, Maryland, I have done extensive research on the issues of suburban sprawl and densifying the neighborhood as plausible solutions through upzoning law changes and designs. The study extends itself into the development of a hypothesis to frame the question and structure the arguement used to refute the traditional suburban ideologies.

My project and efforts were to create designed architectural solutions which will in theory work to alleviate the pressures brought on by the lack of housing affordability and environmental detriment in suburban neighborhoods. If interested, please reach out to me for the graphic novel version of this thesis.

HOTEL AND MARKET urban intervention at st. catherine street montreal quebec, ca

In collaboration with Zhitao Chen, this project explored the possibilities of urban intervention with use of timber in a modular system. The hotel rooms consisted of singular units able to be shifted and moved, creating a unique experience for the inhabitant. The program also call for an open market located directed below on the empty lot, and so we designed keeping in mind the urban conditions that are already existing in the context of the site.

The Environmental Charter School provides is a tuition-free K-8 charter school with students who are Pittsburgh Promise eligible and reside in the City of Pittsburgh. It states itself as an inclusive school, and a place for all students in the City of Pittsburgh. The project here is meant to create a new building design with emphasis on the inclusion of an active-learning commons within the institution to better aid in the development and growth of the younger generation who are meant to attend the school. With a strong belief that a good learning environment plays a vital role in ones educational experiences, much thought was put into the development of the open common spaces as well as classroom settings as well.

Within the limited site allotted, the project is situated on an angled parallelogram-shape site boundary that sits directly adjacent to the constantly busy street of Penn Ave. The surrounding context includes a small church to the right of the site, a row of small store buildings directly across the street of the site, as well as a residential neighborhood to the back of the site as well. Abutted next to the site as well is a large office building that borders the extra parking lots behind the site.

ECO-MORPHOLOGY riparian zones along the river side strip district pittsburgh, pa

Located along the Allegheny River, the Strip District is known as a lively urban community. In studying the environmental factors of the site and using parametric studies through Grasshopper scripts, we can utilize these studies to generate a morphological housing system along the river’s edge. The design focuses on the importance of saving the riparian zones and wildlife, thus forming a synergetic relationship where animals and humans can inhabit the site together.

The initial processes of the designs began with careful hand sketched drawings done in graphite as well as colored pencils in order to create initial experiential perspectives of what the overall design may potentially become. Because this project focuses on the issue of preserving the riparian edge of the Allegheny River that borders the site edges, speculations were made for a living condition which integrated the wildlife into the human life; thus blending the boundaries between people and wildlife

eco-morphology 05

habitat. The exploration proved an interesting topic to research as the design leaned towards creating a synergetic relationship, straying away from the generic apartment complex themes of typical housing organizations. The organizational themes in this design were derived from computational experiments using the Rhino plug-in, Grasshopper, which studied parametric functions. Studies were also made that explored the contexts of the site itself as well as the cultural influences

that makes the Strip District of downtown Pittsburgh what it is today. Aside from the culture, research was made in order to better understand the environmental factors such as the local transportation systems, underground sewage, as well as typical climate conditions.

MATERIALS AND ASSEMBLY cmu course 48-215 pittsburgh, pa

As part of out major curriculum, we were to take a course in which we practiced the production of detailed structural drawings. Assignments included studying the different building types and codes as well as the structural aspects of a building such as wood framed structure that goes into making a real building. The drawings below are samples of what I drafted with heavy use of the 3D modeling software Rhino.
