elcome to Seton Hall Prep’s 33rd Annual Hall of Fame Dinner, as we once again gather to recognize a group of men whose accomplishments and unselfish contributions represent the proud tradition of excellence that we constantly strive to uphold. Tonight we honor the 1938-39 Basketball Team, the 195758 Swim Team and the 1977 and 1978 Football Teams, along with nine individuals who are part of the proud and distinguished legacy that are so deserving of this most prestigious award. onight we are here once again to honor some of the many outstanding student athletes of Seton Hall Prep. We are inducting a group of gentlemen who have been selected for this honor as a result of their hard earned accomplishments both on and off the fields and courts of The Prep. It is always a difficult chore when attempting to select a few from so many. It is without question that there are many student athletes that have passed through the hallways of Seton Hall Prep and these inductees are but a few that may be deserving of this recognition. I wish to thank our Hall of Fame Committee for their continued efforts in the difficult selection process. I also offer special thanks to Rich Koles ‘69 and the entire staff of Alumni Relations for their continued work to make this event one of The Prep’s premier events each year. Dr. Emanuel J. Scrofani ’57
Manny went on to play football at Montclair State where he excelled as a defensive end and received Honorable Mention All-American recognition in NCAA Division 3. Upon graduation he received an offer to play football for the Buffalo Bills.
Manny played football his entire high-school career as an offensive and defensive end. He played on the JV team until the middle of his sophomore year, when he was brought up to the varsity because of his raw talent and size. As a varsity player he continued to excel at the game.
Bob Mautone
Bob was an assistant coach for the Seton Hall Prep Wrestling Team for ten years. Before coming to The Prep in 1999 he had ably assisted the wrestling squads of both Essex Catholic and Summit High School. Once installed at The Prep, he proved to be a tremendous asset for the entire program, inspiring a generation of Pirate grapplers and leaving a lasting impact on every wrestler he mentored. Bob’s abilities as a teacher of the sport were truly exceptional. Whether it was in teaching the more rudimentary, basic aspects of wrestling to the younger matmen or advanced concepts and maneuvers to more experienced ones, the ease and patience with which he passed down his knowledge were unparalleled. Bob many thanks as a coach, but as a role model. As fellow former Wrestling Coach John Allen says of him, “His honesty is beyond reproach, and his loyalty to staff, kids and people whom he deems worthy is exceptional. Through his leadership and example, Bob not only coached many boys into fine wrestlers, but fine men as well.” Although the position was offered to him
Bob was a devoted football and baseball athlete. As a varsity athlete with the baseball team, he made great contributions as a catcher for two years. As senior captain, he batted .405 and knocked in a then school record 29 RBIs. Bob was selected for the New Jersey All Star Game, and was also named to the All-County Team that year. Bob’s notable football career under Coach Tony Verducci granted him the opportunity to start on the varsity for two years. He played both
many times, he never opted to become head coach. It was not the position of prominence that he cared about, but rather his supporting role, in which he was able to make the biggest, most positive impact on the people around him.

At the Parochial A State Championship against Bergen Catholic, Bob scored twice as the Pirates won 20-12. That year Seton Hall Prep set a record for most points scored and was

ranked #3 in the state. Among the many players contributiing to that record, Bob led the team in rushing and scoring and was ranked the #2 player in Essex County. He was named Worrall Publications Athlete of the Year, Seton Hall Prep 1982 Athlete of the Year, and the “Most Representative Setonian” at graduation.
Viken Manoukian ’91 Viken was an outstanding tennis and football player, receiving All-State honors throughout his four years at Seton Hall Prep. He started for the varsity Tennis Team all four years and during his junior and senior year Viken was named

continued to achieve as a senior in his senior year and was named 1st Singles All-State, Essex County Scholar Athlete, and to the All-Essex County team. His career record playing for The Prep was an astonishing 84-10. Not only was he a great tennis player but also an outstanding football player, a running back on the varsity for three years at The Prep. He started for two of those years under Coach John Allen and was named captain of the 1990 team, scoring 12 touchdowns and rushing for 1,000 yards in his two years as a varsity starter. He received many awards for his outstanding level of play. In 1990 he was named 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Area, 1st Team All-Essex, and 3rd Team All-State Parochial. Following graduation from Seton Hall Prep, Viken went on to Muhlenberg College with an athletic scholarship to play football there.
Robert C. Miller ’97 Rob was a four-year varsity ice hockey athlete, as well as a two-year varsity tennis player. Throughout his four years of ice hockey at The Prep, Rob accumulated 71 points as a defenseman, more than half of them coming during his senior year. He was the team captain during both his junior and senior years, leading his team to the National A Conference, Gordon Cup, and Parochial A Championships. During his career, Rob was recognized as 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Parochial, and Senior All Star for New Jersey. During his two years as a varsity tennis player, Rob earned team MVP honors and 2nd Team Allteam captain. His outstanding play earned him Area recognition his junior year; he was team many awards. During his sophomore year at Southern New Hampshire, he was named 2nd Team All-American and received Honorable Mention for the ECAC Northeast All-Conference. Then during

and third in the Region 3 Tournament, which qualified him for the state tournament. He finished with a 25-5 record that year, an amazing feat for a ninth-grader. Unfortunately an injury forced him out of the lineup his entire sophomore season, but he returned with a vengeance the following year. As a junior at 135lbs, he compiled a record of 24-3, becoming County, District, and Region Champion. Kevin was named the “Outstanding Wrestler” of the Region 3 Tournament that year
his senior year at Salem State, he earned 2nd Team ECAC East All-Conference honors and New England College Hockey Writers Division II/III All Star Team recognition. Following college Rob played professional hockey for five years and then coached for three, named the Federal Hockey League’s Coach of the Year in 2011.

Kevin G. Bryan ’02
“Mild-mannered off the mat, but a beast on the mat,” best describes the wrestling career of Kevin Bryan. Under the direction of Seton Hall Prep Hall of Fame coach John Allen, Kevin became one of SHP’s best wrestlers of all time. As a 112lb. freshman he was runner-up in the Essex County Tournament, District 10 Champion,
and went on to finish in sixth place at the state tournament. Coach Allen awarded Kevin the team “MVP” at season’s end. Kevin entered his senior campaign as the team captain at 135lbs., but was once again hampered with injury most of the season. However, calling upon grit and determination, he still managed to win another District Championship. Unfortunately, the recurrance of the injury kept him out of competition in the Regionals that year.

Kyle Frankoski ’02 Kyle graduated from Seton Hall Prep in 2002 after transferring from St. Benedict’s Prep in 2000. Before Kyle’s arrival The Prep’s Soccer Team was “middle of the pack,” going 99-92-19 throughout the ’90s. During his first year at The Prep, Kyle was named to Second Team All-Essex County, with the team going 7-6-7. Kyle was a

and “a man against boys” by Coach Marty Berman and his stats support these claims, with five goals and twenty-one assists during his senior year. Coach Berman was not the only one to recognize his great play. Kyle was named to the First Team All-State (All-Groups), First Team All-Essex Conference, First Team All-Iron Hills Conference and Player of the Year by the StarLedger. Since the 2001 season The Prep has averaged 18 wins a year and annually been in the hunt for county, conference and state championships. After his great career as a member of Seton Hall Prep’s soccer team, Kyle went on to play at Monmouth University as a four-year starter. As he did at The Prep, he played a role in establishing Monmouth University’s soccer program. During his senior year at Monmouth, his team made the NCAA tournament and has been returning ever since.

As a freshman he was the midfield glue on a senior-laden team that finished 15-4-1 and won the Iron Hills Conference title. During his four years as a varsity starter at midfield, Sal scored 17 goals, had 38 assists, and participated in a total of 61 wins. In his senior year Sal brought the Pirates to their first North Jersey Non-Public A Championship in nearly 30 years, and their third straight Iron Hills Conference Championship. Sal was named First Team All-Essex County, First Team All-Iron Hills Conference and First Team All-State in both his junior and senior years. As a junior he became the first Seton Hall Prep athlete to be named Star Ledger Athlete of the Week.

1977-1978 Football Teams The ’77 and ’78 football teams dominated the field by being part of a win streak of 32 games. The two teams succeeded in finishing off a “3peat” begun the year before, by winning back-toback-to-back Parochial A State Championships. The team record was 21-0-1 during its reign as champions. The pair of teams scored 526 points, with their opponents scoring only 36 points. In 1977 the Pirates held their opponents to only 6 points, and in 1978, 30. Topping the list of highlight reel accomplishments, in 1977 the football team recorded 10 shutouts, an NJSIAA record. Mike Ragan was the quarterback in ’77 and Danny Roselle was under center in ’78. These quarterbacks were teamed up with All-Groups All-State players, including Chet Parlavecchio ’78, Ed Aulisi ’78, John Merklinger ’80, and Tony D’Urso ’79. Other standouts on the teams included Joe Aulisi ’78, Vin D’Alessandro ’78, Mike Gallo ’79, Salvatore DeVito ’79, Steve Meglio ’79 and Jim DeRogatis ’79 and were recognized as 1st Team Parochial A. The Herald News later selected Ed Aulisi ’78, John Merklinger ’80 and Pat Sages ’77 as members on the All-Decade Offensive Team. Also, Mike Gallo ’79, Ferdy Masucci ’77, Kevin
O’Callaghan ’81, and Chet Parlavecchio ’78 were recognized as members of the All-Decade Defensive Team.
Every member on the ’77 and ’78 Seton Hall Prep football teams contributed each in his own way to help the Pirates achieve an unbelievable record and win three consecutive New Jersey State Championships.

Ode to Dr. Emanuel J. Scrofani 1955-1956 Football – 2017 Hall of Fame We few, we happy few, we Band of Brothers (Henry V). Old men often forget but will remember what feats we did those days. Then shall their names be installed into the 1955-1956 Hall of Fame. So let us not forget Connie Egan, Hugh Dunnion, Al Mattia, Tom Feehan, Ron Rallo, Marty Zittel, Tom O’Connell-President, Marty Dillon, Walter Kobin, Richard Gralewski, the Very Reverend Michael Kelly and this year’s inductee, Dr. Emanuel J. Scrofani. These few take a greater share of honor than those who had no temper for the game and will tip-toe when their name is not called and feel accursed for not being there. The story shall be told to their sons and daughters and they in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we Band of Brothers, who shed our sweat, grime, talent and strength, shall be in the Band of Brothers. And on this day, coaches T. Verducci, P. Calcagno, V. Aulisi and G. Schiller they shall be remembered. This day the Band of Brothers can laugh or cry in a flowing glass of wine, each one freshly filled with memories remembered. Congratulations and kudos to an SHP “Dreamer.” He is the proud son of Italian immigrants who lived in Newark, NJ. He received football All-State honors and he was honorably mentioned as a football All-American in his senior year at Montclair University. However, his big dream was fulfilled when he was appointed as the Superintendent of Schools in Napa-Sonoma, CA. In Vino Veritas and Nec Timede-Nec Temere.
