The Programmes are taught by highly respected scholars. The combination of expert faculty, visiting professors and specialist lecturers provides students with a breadth of knowledge and experience as well as an opportunity to develop a network of professional relationships. Faculty members offer guidance in both academic and career-related subjects. Teaching styles facilitate a close working relationship with students, and there is frequent contact in the classroom and during office hours. Study visits and seminars take place in smaller groups, and allow for close viewing of artworks and additional discussion.

Sotheby’s internships offer the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how an auction house works, how art is managed in a commercial environment and how the auction market relates to the broader world of art business. All full¬–time students at Sotheby’s Institute are eligible to apply. For MA students, internships commence after completion of second semester. Internships are generally three months duration. There are a limited number of internships and admission is highly selective. Internships are unpaid.

All of the Institute’s programmes are designed to prepare students for a career in the international art world. The Institute also works with students to help them find art related internships at auction houses or in galleries, museums and other art institutions. Many of the Institute’s postgraduate programmes include travel to major art fairs, exhibitions, museums and collections in Europe, the US and Asia, depending upon the program of study. ART BUSINESS
London plays a major role in the global art and antiques markets, where dealers trade in British, European, American, Asian and Indian art. This is a multi-billion-dollar industry, employing hundreds of thousands of professionals in small and medium-sized businesses as well as in large enterprises, including auction houses, galleries, investment banks, insurance companies and other specialist service suppliers to the market. The London MA in Art Business is designed for students with knowledge of art or art history who want to understand business theory and practice, as well as the technical and structural elements of the art market. It does not lead to a business degree but to a degree in the business of art.

Europe is home to a number of other important centres for the art market, offering valuable comparisons with the London scene. First-hand knowledge of them is invaluable. Therefore, recent study trips abroad have included the Maastricht TEFAF Art Fair, Art Basel and the FIAC Contemporary Art Fair in Paris.
FINE AND DECORATIVE ART
This programme is taught from the perspective of an art expert rather than an academic art historian. It is based on the curriculum developed by Sotheby’s some forty years ago to train professionals for the auction house. Unique in concept and practice, today’s coursework, like the original, stresses connoisseurship, fostering intimate knowledge of artworks as well as practical skills. It has always been taught by specialists, art professionals, curators, and scholars, with an object-based, and often object specific approach that enhances learning and develops expertise regarding the aesthetic and technical merits of a work of art. Case studies in Old Master paintings, modern art, furniture and ceramics from the Renaissance to the present day form the core curriculum, along with the development of professional skills for attributing and cataloguing works of art, culminating in the House Sale Project, which closely mirrors the auction house environment.

The defining characteristic of this programme is its frequent and regular visits to museums and galleries, Sotheby’s auction house, and country house collections for first-hand observation and handling of art objects. The visual and hands-on approach, supported by a thorough grounding in materials and techniques, gives a firm foundation for postgraduate research, connoisseurship and the excitement of unraveling the material culture of the past.

CONTEMPORARY ART
For those who wish to study contemporary art in-depth, this programme emphasizes the artwork itself and how we approach and interpret art from 1960 onwards. Analysis of paintings, sculpture, installations, video art, performance, and conceptual works forms a regular part of the curriculum. Students and faculty work together in London’s museums and galleries as well as in extended study visits to museums, collections and galleries of northern Europe.
PHOTOGRAPHY: CONTEMPORARY AND HISTORICAL
This programme offers an in-depth study of photography and its significance in modern visual culture. Its focus is the critical analysis of the earliest to the most recent photographic experiments. The implications of photography’s increased presence in private collections, public museums, commercial galleries and the emergence of major markets in this field are also examined and discussed. A variety of lectures by distinguished guest scholars and experts as well as study visits to museums, art fairs and collections in the UK and abroad are included in the programme. The programme is intended for those interested in careers as specialists in photographic imagery and objects. Graduates go on to pursue diverse careers, often within the burgeoning contemporary photographic gallery network, or pursue other professional positions in the photographic art market.

EAST ASIAN ART
The art history of China, Japan and Korea is the focus of this unique programme, which provides art historical instruction in key features and concepts, encouraging students to make cross-cultural links in the art history of East Asia. Teaching is object based and is organized into three areas of study: religious art, decorative art and pictorial art.

A distinctive aspect of the programme is the opportunity to examine art objects closely in handling sessions during study visits to major collections in London and Germany. A longer study-trip to the southern and northeastern Silk Road in Xinjiang, China, visiting Khotan, Niya, Turfan, Bezeklik, Jiaohe, Gaochang, Astana, Dunhuang and Xi’an is also included.

DECORATIVE ART, DESIGN & CRAFT OF THE TWENTIETH & TWENTY-FIRST CENTURIES This programme combines academic study of twentieth century and contemporary decorative arts with an exploration of the professional design world. Furniture, ceramics, glass, patterns, metalwork, jewelery and dress from the Art Nouveau period to the pluralism of the present day are examined in relation to architecture and interiors, and wider theoretical and contextual issues. The interrelationship between the fine and decorative arts is a strong theme throughout the programme.

Students are encouraged to develop and discuss their ideas in one-on-one tutorials, which are a distinctive aspect of the programme. The course promotes an object-based methodology and the development of visual, analytical and interpretative skills that are relevant to a range of careers. Visits to museums, houses, dealers, the auction houses, design and craft fairs, together with a study tour to Paris, provide opportunities to study objects first hand and also to assess the market for twentieth century and contemporary design. Throughout the programme, assignments and contact with practitioners in the field introduce students to aspects of the professional design world.

TRAVEL
Sotheby’s full-time programmes require travel that may include visits to galleries, special collections, art fairs and art-related events occasionally in other cities or abroad. Travel costs are borne by the students and vary from program to program. In order to facilitate the advance purchase of tickets and reservations, travel costs for each program are calculated and charged for the full academic year, in advance, during registration for the first (fall) semester. If currency fluctuations or other changes result in the actual cost of travel exceeding the fee collected, Sotheby’s Institute will absorb the additional expense. If the cost of travel is less than the fee collected, the difference will be refunded at the end of the academic year.
