Equine Science Careers
Expect opportunity.
Equine Science Program RCTC’s Equine Science Program offers one associates degrees, a diploma, and two certificate programs. Our Courses: Equine courses include lectures, riding classes, and training classes. Riding classes include Western Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, and Dressage. Through course work, students will learn about horse nutrition, equine anatomy, facility maintenance, first aid, diseases, hoof care, teaching techniques, and conformation. In addition, riding and training courses will prepare students to train and reschool horses, do ground work, ride in competition, and more. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisite courses for enrollment in the program. However, students wanting to take a riding class need to be able to walk/trot/canter a horse in a balanced position, mount from the ground, and lift 50 pounds. Horses and Facility: The College leases an equestrian facility near campus and utilizes both school horses and untrained colts for the riding/training courses. Students may not use their own horse in the riding classes, but there are several barns in the area that board horses. Extras: On top of course work, there is a co-op program, an equestrian club, field trips, and guest speakers. Students often become involved in the local horse industry while at college. Employment: Careers in the horse industry include horse training, riding instruction, facility management, business ownership, event planner, program directorship, grooming, and more. Starting salary ranges are $25,000-$40,000. Students receive regular job opportunity information after graduating from the program.
