P2  Mission Statement and Logo Mark

Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School, a community Jewish day school, provides a rich dualcurricular education that encourages independent and critical thinking, lifelong learning, self-awareness, and compassion. In partnership with our families, we inspire our students to become active, dedicated, ethical, and informed citizens and leaders who are committed to Israel and the vitality of the Jewish people.

Heschel Day School’s logo mark engages us in a spirit of learning: inclusive, tangible, and meaningful. Like the tree, the child is rooted in the traditions of our heritage and in the continuity of our community. Challenged by core academic goals and inspired by indelible Jewish experiences, our students develop the discipline and inquisitiveness to succeed in a world where the possibilities are endless.

P3 a note from the head of the school

Life becomes infinitely more meaningful and wonderful when lived in community. —Mordecai Kaplan

Cherish the past; challenge the future. Throughout 2010–2011, with the support of you, our community, we joined together in a spirit of generosity and with a strong sense of direction. With the guidance of our Board, we held the kickoff of Heschel Day School’s 40th anniversary for 2011–2012, looking back at our traditions and looking forward to the decades ahead. We received strong response from our community at the announcement of the beginning of a capital campaign to renew our classrooms, and we were delighted with a gift from our Parent Organization for a new iPad program. Achievements at Heschel are not rare, but they are special. Every minyan that brings a bar or bat mitzvah child to the bima to share Torah with peers is a voice that is heard. Every robot that responds to programming is an outcome to be celebrated. And, every musical theatre production that stirs the audience to tears is a dream fully realized. These milestones are not reached singularly, but as a community effort. Behind our children’s voices are the parents, families, teachers, and grandparents who

amplify them. When we consider the breadth of what we do at Heschel…the general and Judaic studies curricula, the visual and performing arts, the athletic programs, the community service projects…we applaud the strength of our community. As you read in this Annual Report about what we’ve done this past year, remember that it is because each and every member of the Heschel family brings something special to the school. We are grateful to you… because of you. As we say at Heschel, “the possibilities are endless.” For our children. For our community. For Israel. We thank you for another extraordinary year. Todah Rabah,

Betty Winn Head of School

P4 from the president of the board

Dear Friends of Heschel: As I reflect on this past year, it is clear that our remarkable school truly goes from strength to strength. This last year has been exceptional on many levels, from academic achievement to athletic victory to community participation. Through our challenges, celebrations, and successes, we have been unified by the commitment of our community of teachers, students, staff, parents, and volunteers. In the late spring of last year, we kicked off the celebration of Heschel’s 40th anniversary, a milestone that will be marked by a calendar of special events and activities for the Heschel community. While there are so many impressive aspects of the school that have brought us to this point in our history, perhaps the most consistently inspiring for me is the tireless dedication and professionalism of the faculty. Our teachers are at the heart of a Heschel education, kindling in students a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge. This is what our students want: not merely the facts, but the knowledge that they can use to build

their own lives. Student scientists gather data and analyze their outcomes. Students of Judaica interpret the teachings of their heritage as they are relevant to their own lives. And, kindergarteners explore their creativity in writers’ workshops as they write and illustrate personal stories. What these students have in common is that they acquire powerful skills in independent thinking and problem solving, preparing them for some of the finest schools of higher education. Last year, every 8th grader in the class of 2011 was accepted to the high school of his or her top choice, among them the finest regional high schools. College acceptances are equally remarkable, as the voices of Heschel alumni can be heard on campuses from UC Berkeley and UCLA to Columbia, Brown, Oberlin, and more. We enter the 2011–2012 school year with great momentum, as enrollment is over 400 students, we are attracting new students from around the city, and our parent and volunteer community is busy planning fundraising events. Thank you for the privilege of serving this fine school and this amazing community.

P6–7 the spirit of heschel

Just to be is a blessing. Just to live is holy. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual. Albert Einstein

P8 the heschel fund

As we approach the 2011-2012 school year, we enter the 40th year of Heschel’s history, sensing festivity in the air. The word on campus is that the community is anticipating the celebration of the school’s anniversary, when, actually, it is the community that we should be celebrating…the tremendous impact that the community has had on the school. The Heschel community is special for many reasons; perhaps most special of all is the continuity of generations that has been its cornerstone. Our parents, grandparents, alumni parents, faculty, and staff never cease to amaze us with their generosity of time, leadership, and financial resources, for their own children and for children wanting a Jewish education whose families require tuition assistance. This past year our Heschel Fund has done well, with 100% participation by our Board and our Faculty and Staff, with 90% participation by many grade levels, and with 75% participation overall for the school. While there are many ways to contribute to Heschel, the Heschel Fund is the most meaningful gift an individual can make because, like all independent schools, Heschel relies on these contributions to recruit and foster

excellent teachers, to maintain our beautiful campus, to afford community service projects, to respond to new technologies, and more. As a parent of four children at Heschel and as an alum myself, I am honored to be part of the Heschel community. It is the generosity of each and every one of you that keeps Heschel strong, and, as the Board member responsible for the Heschel Fund and all fundraising efforts, I encourage you to continue to give in a way that is meaningful for you and your family. Thank you for your tireless energy and your endless spirit of giving.

Paul Neinstein (’84) Vice President, Development Board of Directors

P10–11 Heschel highlights 2010–2011

Highlighting our accomplishments gives us an opportunity to demonstrate the hard work, out-of-the-box thinking, risk taking, and persistence that are at the core of each achievement. Accomplishments are the result of collaboration between faculty and students, and often couldn’t happen without the assistance of our willing community of parents.

▲▲ Computing in the cloud promotes online collaboration and creative problem-solving for grades 6–8.

▲▲ Sharing content online through a portal that students can access any time makes learning interactive and collaborative.

Studying racial and cultural injustice teaches students about exemplars of courage who fight hatred and lead to a safer future. Participating in a powerful oral history experience, 8th graders engage in a personal encounter with a Holocaust survivor. Designing, building, and programming robots, Middle School teams compete with hundreds of students in robotic challenges. Allying with Guide Dogs of America is 4th graders’ commitment to community service. ▲▲ Sharing the customs and ceremonies of Shabbat brings 2nd graders and their families together for a special dinner.

Practicing Hebrew language skills by creating speaking voice characters called avatars is a powerful learning tool in Middle School.

Blogging for 5th graders expands their horizons as writers and promotes class discussions online.

▲▲ Revitalizing the Los Angeles River as a community

service project gives Middle Schoolers pride in the city’s resources.

▲▲ Heschel sports teams won two championships and 16

teams competed in the playoffs. Over 80% of our Middle School students played on an athletic team this year. Creating digital family portfolios in the media center teaches young students to describe their personal and family experiences. Creating interactive posters utilizes digital images, text, music, and video to present research projects. Planting a garden teaches elementary schoolers to be guardians of the earth.

P20 ways of giving to heschel Every gift to Heschel Day School makes a difference to our children and strengthens our community. For information on giving gifts, including matching gifts, stocks, or other appreciated assets, please contact our Office of Advancement. Charitable gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

The Heschel Fund Giving to the Heschel Fund is our annual obligation in supporting the school. Contributions to the Heschel Fund augment the school’s current operating budget, helping us hire and retain a dedicated faculty, respond to new technologies, provide an excellent visual and performing arts department, offer a competitive athletics program, invest in our campus, and support professional development. Every gift, regardless of size, matters. We are grateful to our Board, Staff, and Faculty who consistently give at a 100% participation level, and we encourage all individuals and families to contribute.

Endowment Funds Endowment funds are our safeguard for the school’s long-term well-being. An endowment is a fund in which the principal is protected in perpetuity while a small percentage of the interest income is available to be applied to areas of need. To honor our upcoming 40th anniversary in the 2011-2012 school year, Heschel will launch an endowment campaign in order to build a fund that will help secure our future and that will ensure a Heschel education for Jewish students in the community.

Capital Campaign Capital giving enables Heschel to build new facilities and to refurbish existing structures. In the spring, we initiated a capital project to renovate classrooms and finished five in the summer following the school year. The class of 2011 made a generous gift to Heschel, which will be used to create a new Middle School Quad with a bench and grass for outdoor lunches. Heschel was also the recipient from the Farber family to build a sukkah and terrace off the Lunch Pavilion, which is in our capital plan for 2011–2012. We welcome individuals and families to explore with us potential projects that are meaningful to them. We are particularly hopeful for gifts to fund the renewal of additional classrooms.
