Berks County Parks Department Receive New AED Units The Run4Sam 4-mile/10k run has a long history of giving back to the community and to the County Parks. This year, the non-profit will equip the County Park System with three fixed AED units as well as replacing two obsolete portable AED units to the same type used by other county agencies and Berks County EMS organizations. Gring’s Mill and other County parks host many special events like the Run4Sam as well as large festivals like the “Heritage Festival” (coming up Sunday, Oct. 7th). While the County Park Rangers have several portable

AED units, this gift from Run4Sam provides defibrillators in several of the busier parks that will allow swift reaction in case of a heart-related emergencies. The American Heart Association strongly encourages companies and businesses to have AED units easily accessible to allow for a 3-5 minute response time. The fixed units will be installed at the Gring’s Mill Recreation Area, the Berks County Heritage Center and the Bingaman Nature Center in Antietam Lake Park. The Run4Sam has supported the County Parks and Gring’s Mill with similar contributions since the first race event in 2008: Over 40 flowering trees planted along the Union Canal trail to enhance the beauty. 2 award winning riparian buffer installations along the Tulpehocken Creek to reduce erosion, provide wildlife habitat, and improve stream quality. The Run4Sam is well known for its philanthropy; as well as being a premier race event. Proceeds from the Run4Sam support the Samuel Brooklyn Reed Memorial Scholarship managed by the Berks County Community Foundation with over $20,000 awarded to local students thus far. - - - - - - - - - > Full Article: rdgmag.com/rwf4c

BIG Vision Foundation Eliminates Player Registration Fees

The BIG Vision Foundation, a nonprofit organization which manages and maintains the BIG Vision Sports Complex, realizes that it’s part of the now over $9 billion youth travel sports industry, but for this organization, it’s not about the money. Inspired by an episode of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO that aired in August of 2017, BIG Vision Foundation President, Dan Clouser got a crazy idea of eliminating player registration fees for the organizations youth baseball and softball teams. “We changed what sports was meant to be. Instead of being one of the few venues in which an individual could excel solely on his or her talents, we were now making it about money,” Clouser said. “We were making travel sports into something that only mid-upper-class kids could participate in.” “The ripple effects of this program can stretch far beyond our community for many years to come,” Clouser concluded. “It’s more than just a game.” - - - - - - - - - > Full Article: rdgmag.com/bvf5a rdgmag.com - Reading Magazine | 3

Rachel Eskin

The Salt Lounge

Healthy living has been a part of life for as long as 35-year-old entrepreneur Rachel Eskin can remember. For the past twenty years she has had her finger on the pulse of this lifestyle as a Yogi, a vegetarian, and an advocate for health and wellness. Born and raised in Berks County, and a graduate of Wilson High School, she went on to earn a degree from West Chester University in Marketing. She later took on a position as Director of Sales for a hair care product company which led her on a business trip to Florida. It was here that she first tried a salt room experience to help alleviate the seasonal allergies that she suffered from at the time. To Rachel’s amazement, the therapy was miraculous, and she was completely inspired by the results. She realized upon her return to Berks County that there was nothing like salt therapy available here. Two years later, in March of 2018, she opened The Salt Lounge. “I read and researched the business for a year. I visited every salt room in three states and

consulted closely with the Salt Therapy Association.” As I walked through the front doors of The Salt Room, Rachel’s work to create a relaxing and therapeutic spa atmosphere had an immediate impact. The soft music and tranquil spaces beckon visitors to relax and indulge in a peaceful and healthy experience. Padding through the tour in bare feet, Rachel explains what The Salt Room offers. “Our main treatment is Therapeutic Salt Therapy. The treatment comes from the air, and it essentially serves as a toothbrush for the lungs,” she explains. “It is good for post colds or, if you are getting a cold, anything respiratory. The therapy also helps with skin issues such as eczema and psoriasis.” The spa has two salt rooms, one which can host up to eight guests, one private salt room, and a “quiet lounge”, and a reception area/boutique. The floors of each salt room are covered with several inches of salt imported from the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan. This salt is hailed around the world for its therapeutic qualities and serves as the basis for the salt room concept. Soothing soft décor and low lighting create the perfect tranquil environment to partake in the many experiences that guests can choose from. - - - - - - - - - - > Full Article: rdgmag.com/tsl4c ARTICLE SPONSORED BY

Agape Love For the Broken, InByAction Dani Motze Family Dinners Under the Bridge: Pretty much everyone in Reading knows that the one bridge by Reading Area Community College is a popular gathering spot for our community members who are homeless. It’s lesser known – if known at all that Pastor Yoli, founder of Ashes to Beauty, hosted family dinners under that bridge, each night coming home from work, cooking up dinner, and driving over there. Then, she stayed to eat with the people under that bridge, slowly building up mutual trust and respect. And after a while, she started bringing them back home with her so that they could get a shower or good night’s rest (something she still does). She eventually solicited cots so that they didn’t have to sleep on the floor of her studio apartment. “We were a family,” she said. “I wasn’t scared because I knew it was God asking me to do it. God has asked me to take these people into my home.”

Yolanda Mendoza – Pastor Yoli – was once left for dead. She has known the physical, emotional and spiritual pain and suffering that so often accompanies domestic abuse, addiction and mental health issues. She has even cried out for the earth to swallow her up, so that she might be relieved of her pain. But today, through her transformative relationship with God, she has turned that pain into a mission of radically loving our community members who are broken, ignored, under served or unloved. - - - - - - - - - > Full Article: rdgmag.com/pyi7x
