Prelude Please stand, as able Processional Hymn ........................................................ “Faith of our Mothers” (AAHH, #410) 1

Faith of our mothers, living yet In cradle song and bedtime prayer, In nurs'ry love and fireside love, Thy presence still pervades the air: Faith of our mothers, living faith, We will be true to thee till death.

3

Faith of our mothers, guiding faith, For youthful longing– youthful doubt, How blurred our vision, blind our way, Thy providential care without: Faith of our mothers, guiding faith, We will be true to thee till death.

2

Faith of our mothers, lavish faith, The fount of childhood's trust and grace, O may thy consecration prove The well-spring of a nobler race: Faith of our mothers, lavish faith, We will be true to thee till death.

4

Faith of our mothers, Christian faith, In truth beyond our man-made creeds, Still serve the home and save the church, And breathe thy spirit through our deeds: Faith of our mothers, Christian faith, We will be true to thee till death.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant:

The Lord be with you.

People:

And also with you.

Celebrant:

Let us pray. Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word Please be Seated The First Lesson ~ I Samuel 1:1-18 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and 4

sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.” As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.” “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.” Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast. The Response [Read responsively, breaking at the asterisk (*)] Psalm 68:11-20 11

The Lord announces the word, *and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:

12

“Kings and armies flee in haste; *the women at home divide the plunder.

13

14

15

Even while you sleep among the sheep pens, *the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver, its feathers with shining gold.” When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, * it was like snow fallen on Mount Zalmon. Mount Bashan, majestic mountain, *Mount Bashan, rugged mountain, 5

16

why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, *where the Lord himself will dwell forever?

17

The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; *the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.

18

When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, *even from the rebellious—that you, Lord God, might dwell there.

19

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, *who daily bears our burdens.

Our God is a God who saves;

The Epistle ~ 2 Timothy 1:2-10 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Reader:

The Gospel Reading ~ Luke1:39-55 Celebrant:

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

People:

Glory to thee, O Lord.

Celebrant:

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: and she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all

generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; as he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. People:

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon .......................................................................................................Father Meadows The Nicene Creed (Said by all, standing.) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please kneel or remain standing, whichever is comfortable. Prayers of the People Leader:

For the mother who has given up her child for adoption. Bless her life, dear Lord. Give her an abundance of happiness and love and family. Please let her feel the prayers we have for her on each birthday of her child, on each Mother's Day. Today we think of her with reverence and love and inexpressible gratitude.

People:

We thank you for her Unconditional Love

Leader:

For the Single Mother. Give her the strength to put in long hours each day; the courage to face those who dismiss her with blaming and knowing nods; the ability to maintain her loving life at home; and the deepest knowledge in her heart that you love her.

People:

We thank you for Her Strength.

Leader:

For mothers who have had abortions, miscarriages. Lord, there is not a single minute of their life when this loss is not etched so keenly into their brain and heart, whether it is in the middle of a busy day or in those choking moments of grief in the solitary dark of night. Let them be grateful for every minute they had together. Let them treasure those memories and find joy in them. Help them to understand people who don’t know what to say. Open her wounded heart and lead her to comfort and peace. Only you can give her the peace she needs.

People:

We thank you for peace in her life.

Leader:

For the Mother who has memory loss. She was with us as we learned to walk. Guide her uncertain steps today as her balance fails her. She taught us to cross streets and be safe. Help her not to get lost, even in her familiar surroundings. She held us close in the terrors of the darkest nightmares. May she not be frightened today by the reality of her life, which is strange and totally out of her control.

People:

We thank you for memories.

Leader:

Mothers who struggle with mental health. Accompany her, dear Jesus, in her suffering. May she find some relief, with the help of the right care. May we be different in loving her with greater tenderness and understanding. May even momentary times of connection be blessings for her.

People:

We thank you for her and the Struggle.

Leader:

For the Mother who is expecting. Be with her in her gladness these days and deepen her faith, so that labor might be a time of strength and prayer. Guard the health of her baby and give her the peace of mind that may so often seem elusive in this time. With your grace, she will be ready for the end of this expectant time and ready to take on the joys and challenges of parenthood. May she praise you with Mary: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exalts in God my savior.”

People:

We thank you for the Days to Come.

Leader:

For Mothers who have died. Relying on your promises to us, we turn to you in trust that my mother is with you and that she is enjoying your loving embrace. You alone know how she loved the best she could and how she faithfully endured the struggles that she faced. You know the graces you gave her and you know the grace she had for me and for so many. For all the ways she truly loved the way you loved her, please reward her, Lord. May she enjoy the communion of all her family and friends who are with you.

People:

We thank you for the Memory of Her.

Leader:

For Mothers who has lost a child. Our lives are upside down, loving God. The order of the world is out of place and we can’t do anything to right it again. Oh, Lord, you know the pain in her heart at all times and you know why: her child has died. How can it be that her beloved child is gone? The child she cared for with such concern in every illness, the one she held close to her heart and promised to take care of for 8

a lifetime and is not here for her to care for anymore. It hurts her deeply that she wasn’t able to protect this child she loved with her whole being from a death that seems so unfair.

People:

We thank you for Eternal Life.

Celebrant:

We thank you, Creator of us all, for our mothers. I thank you that they gave us life and nurtured us all those years. She gave our faith, helping us to know you and to know Jesus and his ways. She taught us how to love and how to sacrifice for others. She taught us that it was okay to cry and that we should always tell the truth. Bless her with the graces she needs and which you want to give her today. Help her to feel precious in your eyes today and to know that I love her. Give her strength and courage, compassion and peace.

Celebrant:

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus..................................................................................................................LEVAS, #255

Please remain standing, if able. Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All:

We remember his death, 10

We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Celebrant:

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant:

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant:

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

People:

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
