In times of crisis like we are experiencing now, meaningful connections can have even more resonance, giving us a fresh perspective or insight when we are feeling stressed or fearful and need it most. That is my intention with this month’s publication, to bring you a sliver of light during dark times, and to remind ourselves that there are still good things happening around us. In this edition of Hopewell Valley Neighbors, we cover a heavier topic than usual, but it is so important to me to recognize members of our community who have shown as much kindness and selflessness as Kissun Nandram. Although the story is not a light one, it is my hope that it, with the other stories, might inspire you, or offer you a short escape from the chaos that surrounds us. Inspirational stories can always help to shift our energy and boost our mood. And let’s face it: everyone can use some words of inspiration during these very unique and difficult times. We hope these stories give you a little lift whenever you feel in need of some mental, emotional, or spiritual inspiration, and we encourage everyone to stay positive! Publisher: Rachel Donington, 609-462-6786

This issue, we cover some heavier topics than usual. Rachel and I are so humbled to bring you the story of Kissun Nandram, late husband to Susan and father to Sabrina. Through Sabrina’s voice, I learned about this man’s incredibly giving spirit, and was moved more than I ever have been while writing a story. Sabrina’s words about her father paint a picture of an incredibly selfless, deeply compassionate man who put everyone else in the world before himself, who found the joy of life through making other people happy. This cover story is very special, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to recognize him and his family. The past few months have been difficult beyond belief for people across the world, but I hope reading about Kissun’s warmth and kindness can bring a little bit of light to you. Is it Time to Revisit Your

Financial Strategy? By Christina Nash | President & CEO, Knox Grove Financial, LLC As I write this, it is the end of May and, although we’ve been going through what seems like a surreal experience, some individuals have faced more dire situations than others. We are forever grateful to our front-line and essential workers in the medical, emergency, food, and delivery industries as they have worked, and continue to work tirelessly to support us. Their commitment is beyond measure. Throughout the pandemic and the resulting volatile market, our advice to clients has been to ‘stay the course”; to follow the path of the financial strategy we developed and implemented together. They know that crafting a solid, customized financial plan and investment portfolio has been key to their financial security. Realistically, life will probably not fully return to what we thought of as “normal,” but let’s try to focus on enjoying what we can in the present and plan wisely for the future. There is no better time to revisit your financial plan and ask yourself these three questions.

How did your current financial plan and advisor serve you during this crisis? Confidence in your financial strategy is a must

during stressful times. It’s all too easy to make rash decisions when your initial reaction is panic. Was your financial advisor available, knowledgeable, and able to look at your unique situation holistically during this difficult time? Your existing plan should be built in a way that has allowed you to make the changes necessary to keep you on your established financial path. Over the last several months, I’ve been referred to new clients who’ve expressed that this experience has revealed that simply having someone managing their investments is not enough. They needed an advisor who can provide them a plan and be there to help them navigate that plan during times like these.

you want to increase your 401(k) contributions or rethink your overall approach to retirement, you’ll want to make sure your portfolio is well-diversified to minimize future risk.

Are you prepared for the next volatile market? It’s often said that a lesson well learned is never forgotten. Perhaps you need to increase your cash reserves. On the other hand, you may want to be primed to increase your monthly investments during a down market. Are there ways you can pay down debt to be better prepared? If you’ve changed your spending and savings habits recently, as many of us have, continuing those new behaviors may accelerate reaching your financial goals. It’s never too early, or too late to get on the right path. Remember that putting a financial plan and an investment portfolio in place doesn’t have to be complex or overwhelming. Understanding your finances— what you need now, what you’ll need in an emergency and what you need for the future—can be used as the framework for your plan. Sitting down with a financial advisor who understands how to build off that foundation and will continuously monitor your plan to keep you on the right path has never been more important.

Are your retirement goals still the same? Extended time at home

has made some people realize that they no longer need to work full time and are ready to retire. Without a sound retirement plan in place, this would not even be a choice. Others have embraced the option to work from home and decided to push out their retirement date giving them more time to grow their retirement savings. Whether

Re-Opening the Valley: Nature Will Heal Us

By Lisa Wolff | Executive Director, FoHVOS

This year Independence Day has new meaning as many people begin to emerge from their stay-at-home cocoon. COVID-19 has changed our reality and as we venture out, we balance the needs for health and safety with the desire to return to regular activities. Governor Murphy has issued executive orders to re-open the state with a phased approach. What is noteworthy is that initial openings are all outdoors. This is by design and grounded in solid science since public health experts cite “that outdoor environments present reduced risks of COVID-19 transmission as compared to indoor environments.” If you’ve been following my column here at Hopewell Valley Neighbors, you’ve noticed a recurring theme emphasizing the importance of nature and the outdoors for enhancing health and wellness. This pandemic has raised the visibility and the stakes. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize our forwardthinking public officials in Hopewell Valley. The mayors of Hopewell Borough, Hopewell Township and Pennington actively supported FoHVOS, D&R Greenway, and the LHT in partnership to keep local public lands open even as state and county parks were closed. Hopewell Township smartly chose to expedite applications for restaurants to offer outdoor dining.

Get outside to eat, play, and breathe. Hopewell Valley is home to over 100 miles of hiking trails so you can immerse yourself in nature. Take advantage of al fresco dining to support your local restaurant and your health. When given a choice, choose the outdoors. Stay healthy and enjoy our Valley.

vvv Lisa Wolff is the executive director of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS). She can be reached by email at lwoff@fohvos.org.

Valley officials are proactive in their support for a healthy community. While we all know that maintaining distance and improving hygiene (such as disinfecting surfaces and handwashing) will help reduce the spread of the virus, it is equally important to take steps to reduce COVID-19 impact if we are exposed. Outdoor exercise strengthens immune function to fight off infections and viruses. Further, several University studies indicate that outdoor exercise can reduce the duration and severity of COVID symptoms. In addition to keeping us physically healthy, communing with nature helps our mental and spiritual health. Given the current stressors and unrest throughout the country, it is more important than ever to engage in selfcare. The easiest way is to simply get outside, take deep breaths, and walk in the vast open space available throughout the Valley. Visit fohvos.org to download a free trail guide to find and explore new forest trails close to home. Finally, when it is time to reopen, we hope the schools will also take advantage of their outdoor spaces. Over the last three years, Community Conservation partnerships have provided funding for outdoor learning areas at every school in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District. The Pennington School and municipalities have also improved their lands through Community Conservation.

Kissun Nandram

Beloved Hopewell Valley Neighbor

K

issun Nandram was known around Hopewell Borough for his smile and his giving heart. Known as “Palm” by close friends and family, he put all his energy into helping others and building a better life for his family.

Kissun grew up in a family of 11 children in Trinidad. His daughter, Sabrina, shares that although his life was not easy, he learned to make do with what he had at a young age. And family was always at the heart of everything for him. Even as he grew up and married Sabrina’s mother, Susan Nandram, he could never suppress the longing to do big things, to make his own dreams—dreams of moving to America, of creating a life there—become a reality. In Trinidad, Kissun worked as a small appliance technician. “I remember him being so proud of the business cards he printed because being self employed was a big deal for him. Coming from such a large family, he knew the meaning of hard work and sacrifice when it comes to accomplishing your goals,” says Sabrina. Her father’s sense of compassion always stood out to Sabrina. Through his line of work, he often serviced ice cream refrigerators for local creameries and would get to take home frozen treats on occasion. “Whenever he would bring them home, he would call all the less fortunate neighborhood families with kids and share them. This was one of the first instances I remember seeing and learning from his compassion.” As years passed in Trinidad, when Sabrina was a young girl, it became clear to Kissun that he needed to move his family out of the country for their safety. After months of searching for a job in America, he found one on a farm in Hopewell Valley and was sponsored to travel across the world and begin work. “Moving to a new country was hard for him,” says Sabrina, “but he knew the quality of life for us would be worth the sacrifice. He worked and built himself up, always sending my mom and me cards and long letters about how much he missed us.” Sabrina and her mother joined Kissun in Hopewell Valley right before she started 7th grade. “He made that dream come true,” she says, referring to her and her mother’s hopes of living in America. “When my mom and I finally moved to Hopewell in 2003, we felt like our lives were complete and could finally start. We felt so embraced and welcomed in Hopewell.” Sabrina fondly remembers the thoughtful placement of her locker by the administration at Timberlane Middle School; they put her next to a girl who had been new the year before, whose family had come from England. At first, Sabrina felt nervous about her differences—she was from a faraway country and had an accent—but she instantly felt so welcome. “I want to have my kids in Hopewell,” she says. In Hopewell Valley, Kissun became known as a kind, skilled, and extremely hardworking handyman. All the landscapers in the area knew him and admired his devotion to his family and to helping those who needed it. Before he saved up for an old minivan, they knew him by the bicycle he rode around town, eager and willing to help anyone and everyone. Sabrina feels both emotional and overwhelmed at the realization that she never knew of her parents’ financial struggles. “They never showed me that side,” she says. “Anything I wanted, I would get. I remember having to get a new dress for every country club sweet 16 party I attended and my dad would happily drop me off in his work clothes with grass clippings all over him.” Another time, Kissun bought his daughter a new computer at Best Buy. It later occurred to Sabrina that he must have worked a month and a half in order to earn the money for it. Kissun never forgot his roots. After all, family was the most important thing to him. “My dad found happiness from filling his suitcases with gifts for his friends and family on every trip he went back to Trinidad. He also would visit the orphanage on his trips and provide them with a pizza day and sit and talk to them as he listened with a big smile on his face.” This past February, he made the journey back to Trinidad to attend his aunt’s 90th birthday party. Somehow, Kissun found the time, in between working and family time, to further his education in Environmental Studies at Delaware Valley University and Mercer County Community College, finishing on the dean’s list. He truly wanted to live the American dream, to be the first in his family to start a new life in the United States and provide for his wife and daughter,

Resident Feature and learn as much as he could about the world around him. Kissun’s other passion was nature. “He loved every animal he saw,” says Sabrina. “He would take videos of trees, birds, deer, or bunnies and share them with his extended family and friends almost daily.” Residents have noticed during the past few weeks that Kissun’s kind, smiling face has been missing from the normal daily bustle of life in Hopewell Valley. Sabrina and Susan’s neighbors are wondering where he’s gone; his presence was always a comforting, joyful one in the community.

man who fixed things around town, or the eightyear volunteer for The Tree of Light at The Lewis School, or the gentle, loving father and husband he was to Sabrina and Susan Nandram. Sabrina and her family grieve, holding onto pieces of him, such as the nature videos he loved to record. But they are so grateful to have known such a man as Kissun. He was a true humanitarian, hardly thinking of himself and always wanting to give. Rest in peace, Kissun Nandram. You will be missed.

On April 3, 2020, Kissun Nandram passed away after a two-week fight with COVID-19 at the hospital. He was only 57 years old. “His smile and heart will be missed by many, but never forgotten,” says his daughter. Kissun’s spirit was always one of giving, of thinking of others first. “He had compassion for every person he met,” says Sabrina. “I always remember us stopping to help every person he saw pulled over with car issues in Trinidad. He was never too much in a hurry when it came to helping someone. He never made anyone feel like a stranger. He treated everyone with the same level of humanity he had for his family and friends.” Kissun was a beloved father, brother, nephew, son, husband, friend, and neighbor. He left this earth much too soon, but his spirit will live on through the memories of everyone who loved him. In Hopewell Valley, he will be remembered as the selfless, humble

Hope Why Is

So Important?

By Rachel Donington

Whether we think about it or not, hope is a part of everyone’s life. Everyone hopes for something. It’s an inherent part of being human. Hope helps us define what we want in our future and is part of the self-narrative about our lives. To have hope is to want an outcome that makes your life better in some way. It not only can help make a tough present situation more bearable but also can eventually improve our lives because envisioning a better future motivates us to take the steps to make it happen.
