ALPHA_KNIT KNITTED TYPOGRAPHY DESIGNS

RE-DOCK & MAKER DIFFERENCE @ LIVERPOOL LIBRARIES COMPILED BY SAM MEECH

ALPHA_KNIT Dear Knitter (or Typographer) These knitting motifs and patterns were developed by young people and participants during several workshops in Liverpool Libraries. The workshops took place during Feburary - March 2018 at Toxteth Library, Norris Green Library, and Central Library in Liverpool. They were part of the MAKER DIFFERENCE programme. Each pattern will work with a standard size 24-stitch punchcard, as used by domestic knitting machines. For most people taking part in the workshops, this was their first time creating pixel typography or knitting with a machine. The designs have been faithfully reproduced here, as they were created. This knit-zine has been developed in the self-publishing tradition of knitting pattern booklets, in particular the series created by Wendy Phillips. In the 1980s, Wendy was a prolific knitter and pattern designer, creating numerous self-published collections of motifs, ranging from zoo animals to sports, many of which can still be found on ebay. The history of knitting and textiles is interwoven with an ethic of sharing, and in keeping with Re-Dock’s recent publications (such as Critical Kits), it is a pleasure to release our first pattern collection. Special thanks to Jonathan Hitchen, Joanne Hitchen and Marie Jones, who helped to deliver the (at times frantic) workshops. Most of all, a huge thankyou to all the young people (and their parents and guardians) who took part, creating some astounding type and pattern designs, that made even the most experienced typographers rethink what makes a fantastic letterform (or a great knitting pattern).
