n 15th February 2013, Reach a Hand Uganda with support from Child Africa made its first school outreach program that launched the Get ur Mix Out!- “My Body, My life, My Choice” campaign 2013 funded by the MTV staying alive foundation.
This was the first of the three school visit that RAHU is supposed to make per school this year. This was a focused or interest based discussion with different students that were grouped according to their level in school. The S.1s and S.2s in one group, A-level girls together and A-level boys in another group. Mrs. Julie Solberg the founder and Managing Director of Child Africa and the Bwinga magazine had a one on one with the girls in A-level while the RAHU team interacted with the other student groups. AIMS • Launch Reach a Hand Uganda programs in the school. • To assess the school environment and determine the outstanding Sexual Reproductive Health and other issues that affect the student and school community. • Reach out to over 100 students across the school. • Determine the SRH needs of the student community. • Introduce Bwinga – “The Champion within” to S1 and S2 students
STATISTICS Mrs. Julie Solberg and the RAHU team talked to 49 A- level girls in the school The RAHU team interacted with 44 A- Level boys, 20 boys from senior one and two and 22 girls from senior one and two. In total we reached out to 135 students in Kennedy secondary school Entebbe.
ARISING QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM THE SESSIONS O-LEVEL (S1 and S2s) • Poor school environment • Favoritism • Neglect from teachers • Poor feeding • We are easily sent home if we don’t have 60% of the fees yet our parents are still struggling. • Our matron is very rude to us; we are not free with her • Our toilets are very dirty • The place we get our water from is very dirty • Very little time given for leisure activities • Food is restricted on visiting days • Pressure from boys who claim to be in love with me • Our talents are not promoted • The higher class students discriminate against us • I always have feelings of having sex with a girl and I need help on how to over them • I accidentally got a girlfriend and then realized that I was wrong but the girl loves me too much, how can I prevent this girl • I can’t get myself to read, how can I be helped? • There is a lot of peer pressure; I can’t be myself, please help • When you find out that you are HIV positive, is it right to keep it from your parents and teachers? • Our dormitory is too close to the latrine, very unbearable • If we want to know our status as students what do we do because some of us were born with people who are HIV positive, so are we infected? A-LEVEL (BOYS) • Is masturbation a good way of abstaining from sex? • In case you have a girlfriend and she doesn’t care much about you, please advice?
• I hear that sometimes condoms slip off the pennis and remain in the girl’s vagina, is it true? • My girlfriend at home is breaking my heart, please advice? • Can you guys bring condoms the next time you come back? • I want to abstain but there are many beautiful girls • I am a primary abstainer but what I fear most is to get a wife who has never abstained • Actually when I look back at my village, it is a good example that AIDS is no longer a killer disease, but seems more dangerous • After my school I would like to get a virgin girl and how can I test if she is still a virgin without having sexual intercourse? • I like girls but they think am a womanizer, how can I ran away from my past? • Please bring some celebrities to talk to us and tell us how they made it • Can we form a club in our school that talks about these things? • What if I love a girl and she is just a friend what should I do? • I have never had sex in my life but I do masturbate, is masturbating a bad thing? • I am always embarrassed by my friends, mocking me that I can’t seduce a girl, it’s a fact and I also have a problem with it. I only like one girl and I have fallen in love with her but I can’t express my feelings for her, what can I do about this, I am so shy? Please guys help me • I don’t have sex but I service myself by manipulating my pennis, are there any problems? • My body is very approximately sexually active! It is a cool thing right? • I love sex so much but I Iove my body and life, how can I be helped? • We have talents in MDD and other activities but the school does not support clubs effectively • I love my life that I can’t mess my life with the opposite sex, I like partying but am careful ,also I think am smart and the girls can’t dare mess with me. • I always play sex with mature women but what disturbs me is that the last time I had sex with an old woman pus came out of her vagina what should I do? • Please get me condoms I can’t abstain because sex is very good • I have never had done it (sex) even though I think about it but it’s not yet time!!! • I want to become a manager in environment and forest resources because I just want the environment to be clean • Am a great public speaker but there’s this nervousness that comes within me when addressing a gathering , could u please help me gain confidence and esteem • Please come back next time guys and earlier so we can have more time together!!! • If I keep away from sex I can’t get chronicle diseases, true? • I request that when you come back you talk to us how a person with HIV/AIDS live in the environment should with fellow students. • I have never corned a girl, does it mean that am abnormal?
• How do you know that a girl wants to fall in love with you? • Hey can you help me to find myself, tell me how can I determine my career, what does school have to do with my body! Come back next time. • Which advise can you give to someone of the boys who are having girl friends? • I can’t abstain but I can use a condom effectively is it right? • My girlfriend will let me down if I tell her that am abstaining what advises can you give me? • How can I join you guys in my vacation? • Please teach us how use condoms right, it is important because we like sex. • From the biblical context I came to know that my body is a temple of God and so I want to learn how to protect the temple • I started playing sex in S.2, I have ever tested for more than 3 times but I am positive • How can a person improve on his confidence? How can I get rid of shyness and interact with anyone freely? • If one has an STD but he does not know where he can get proper treatment on for free, what should he do? • Is it right to punish us for coupling because we still do it in holidays anyways • Is it true that when u grows up when you a virgin (until university for example) can u face challenges when you have sex for the first time!!!!! • S6 boys think that the girls are older and more nature than them, they don’t really mingle and mix with the girls and they don’t want to see and learn how to use condoms • Can I get a girl pregnant if I use the withdraw method? • Which one hurts most HIV or AIDS? • Why would a boy get HIV infection if he is the one releasing sperms and not taking in anything? • Can u get HIV through kissing? • Takes a lot of time to wear a condom, I can’t wait for that long just to have protected sex, by the time I wear the condom the girl will be tired and I lose out on the goodies.
EXPECTED ACTIONS • Come with technical and professional people to deal with the Sexual Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS related issues. • Create Get Ur Mix Out- school clubs. • Hold comprehensive discussions about sexual health and HIV/AIDS • Inspiration and career guidance talks with the students. • One-on-One clinic with students.
