Reach Message

Encourage yourself in The Lord during difficult times By Pastor Victor Soo

Reach / Summer 2019

To be faithful through the trials Genesis 26:1-6 There was a famine in the

land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. Then the Lord appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws. So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. Many parts of our nation suffer terrible drought; and increasing political, economic and social challenges confront us. Such trials and testing are not new, and we need not be alarmed over them

as if something strange has come upon us. We are positioned for times such as these to be witnesses of the glory of God. The Church has thrived, often at a great cost to the good of humanity. As we go back to the days of our patriarch Moses, we understand he too experienced tough situations. He left his homeland in obedience to the will of God to walk into difficulties. During such a challenging situation, he not only overcame the challenges of his days but thrived to be a blessing unto Lot, his nephew, and the people of the land of Canaan. He was recognised as a man of faith who trusted God in all circumstances. This resulted in him being accorded the honour of prince amongst the local inhabitants:

Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead. (Genesis 23:6)

5

Reach Message Then we witness another generation encountering a famine. Under such great challenges, there were temptations to compromise. However, upon hearing God, Isaac remained to contend with the brevity of his days. In the natural, to see and understand how the blessedness of God was to be fulfilled was not easy. But thanks be unto God, Isaac knew he was to walk by faith and not by sight, and the promise made to his father remained. When the ground was parched and hard, he sowed. He reaped, not some but onehundred fold. What he needed most in support of his fields at times of trials led him to the wells dug by Abraham – wells which were filled with rubbish. Isaac moved to dig up new wells through earth as hard as rock but he struck water. This was repeated on other occasions. The people picked quarrels and created contentions with Isaac and his herdsmen. Isaac persevered and dug other wells. Well, we know he was successful in all that he did as promised by Jehovah Jireh. As Isaac faithfully obeyed God as His Source, the Lord became His Resource. In the same way, as we trust in God’s will, He will supply all our needs. In the end, good shall always overcome evil for

the love of God never fails. The Church must never stop boldly fulfilling The Great Commission, making disciples and investing in the communities. The need to engage and be relevant must continue through the famine for this is The Mandate of God. These tribulations shall refine us and our ways to be strong and effective. In the end, Isaac was vindicated by the king of the land he dwelled.

Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army. And Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” But they said, “We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you, that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.” (Genesis 26:26-29) Even Jacob faced drought and famine in his generation. The well he dug for water, and his good works blessed the generations well after him. Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob.

Reach Message To be prayerful through the trials

Reach / Summer 2019

During your darkest moments, commit your difficulties unto The Lord. He is only a prayer away. This may be your guide.

Lord, grant me revelation in such difficult times to be a great witness to your glory. Give me wisdom that I may discern the spirit and respond righteously. Let me be encouraged and remain focused as I go

about my walk. Cause me to recognize you as The Way, The Truth and The Life. I will give thanks and count my blessings each day. May I not weary in doing good but be comforted and be blessed in order that I can comfort others with the comfort You granted me. I pray in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!

Reach Ministry

- A reflection of an international student

Moving to a new country to further one’s education is a big decision for most people. It certainly was for me - to leave Cameroon in west Africa to pursue a master degree in Australia, a place I had never been, where I knew no one personally. It kept me awake and raised flags of worry within me as I stepped out of my comfort zone in a way I had never done before. However, my initial shivers of fearing the unknown and what the future had to offer, evolved into shivers of excitement, knowing that God has a plan for me and is always willing to walk alongside me to accomplish His purpose, all for His glory. After almost 2 days of travel, I finally arrived in Melbourne and got my housing needs amongst other things sorted. I was lucky to have heard about Reach Community Church (RCC) from my brother who left Melbourne less than two years prior to my arrival. I decided to visit the church, and this turned out to be one of the best decisions I had made upon my arrival. Not only did I have a support system in the university cell group consisting of people my age, who helped with my transition; more importantly it provided a platform for me to grow personally and spiritually. Being distant from home helped me look to God as the source of all my needs and deepened my faith and my trust in Him. The last semester of my master’s program was probably the toughest time of my life. I had significant unforeseen delays in my capstone project, and I was worried about what to do upon the completion of my master’s degree. I planned to apply for a doctorate but that required stellar grades which were looking unlikely with the difficulties I was facing in my project. It felt as though I had hit rock bottom… Fortunately for me, as I would later find out – that is what God excels in. He excels in leading us through the fire, for His glory. I decided to lay down my requests to God and pray for His peace and providence in this time of need. During one of the monthly prayer events at RCC, I heard God’s reassuring voice telling me to be still, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46: 10), trust in His providence and that He would finish the good work He started. I recall feeling calm in the midst of the storm and having an inner conviction that all was well. A few months later I graduated from my program as the top student and later got a full scholarship for my PhD studies at the same university. That difficult period of my life taught me that God walks through the fires of life with His children. Being an infinite God, all finites are the same to Him, thus we can trust in His providence which never runs out.

Reach Ministry As I look back over my journey as an international student, I can clearly see the hand of God leading me and steering me to a place of hope. He took me out of my comfort zone so I could learn to lean on Him. He placed me in Reach Community Church so I could know Him deeper while fellowshipping with other Christians. He walked with me through tough situations so I could better appreciate His faithfulness and view Him as the source from which all resources flow. In the midst of all uncertainty I remind myself of Jeremiah 29:11,“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

9

Reach Book Review

Maurice McDonald, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, Billy Graham – what comes to mind when you hear these names? For me, they remind me of outstanding leadership. There are many leaders out there, but these leaders stand out among them. Have you ever wondered what makes them different? The author John C. Maxwell wrote this book to explain the twenty-one laws that make them great leaders, and how we can apply these laws in our life to become a great leader. I will share with you the first four laws, but if you want to know more, you will have to read the book yourself. The first law is the law of the lid. A leader needs to have the ability to lead. Maxwell used the American fast food company McDonald’s as an example in this first law. McDonald’s was started when two brothers, Dick and Maurice, saw the opportunity of a drive-in restaurant and started the business. However, without Ray Kroc, McDonald’s would not have been the well-known fast food chain that we go to when we want to treat ourselves or when we are too lazy to cook. Maxwell explains that McDonald’s success today was from Ray Kroc’s leadership ability. Leadership ability is always the lid on personal and organisational effectiveness. If a person’s leadership is strong, the organisation’s lid is high; if it is not, then the organisation is limited. The second law is the law of influence. Maxwell described several factors that measure the influence a leader has. One of them is relationship. A leader needs to

have followers, but followers will not appear without relationship. Maxwell uses the example of Mother Teresa to illustrate that building relationship with the right person results in real leadership. The third law is the law of process. Leadership does not come in a day. Becoming a leader is a lot like investing successfully in the stock market. It is impossible to make a fortune in a day. A leader needs to understand himself and others, which requires sacrifice and growth. The fourth law is the law of navigation. Good navigators see the whole trip in their mind. They have a vision of getting to their destination. I found this important because a leader takes his followers onto a journey. The direction of the leader will influence the followers. Maxwell describes this law with an acrostic to make it easier to remember: Predetermine a course of action. Lay out your goals. Adjust your priorities. Notify key personnel. Allow time for acceptance. Head into action. Expect problems. Always point to the successes. Daily review your plan. If you would like to learn about how a real leader is shaped or how to become an outstanding leader, this is the book for you. The author draws on his own experiences and the real life experiences of other successful leaders to help the readers to envision what a great leader looks like. It is a very practical book and easy to understand.

Youth Camp 2019 - Level Up - My take home message

Reach / Summer 2019

By Gabriel Lee

During the September school holiday, Reach Community youth group and friends travelled to Belgrave for a 4-days-3-nights camp. These four days consisted of fun activities, powerful worship and amazing teaching. During this camp I learnt that “levelling up” means to learn to put my faith in God no matter what the circumstances are, and how God reveals Himself in mysterious ways. Unlike other camps, which are all about fun and friendships; in this camp we have fun and friendships, and much more - we experienced God’s amazing presence. What I learnt from this camp could be split into two parts: Part 1: Worship Throughout the four days, we had many worship sessions, all showed the amazing power of God. These worship sessions really brought out God’s power in the camp. God spoke to many people during the worship sessions. Despite having allocated time, the worship sessions always went overtime as people came forward for the altar call. Many people were being prayed for and received encouragement and wisdom to help them in their struggles. Watching people walk up and receive prayers really touched my heart. I could see how the prayers encouraged those who needed them.

Part 2: Teachings During the camp, friendships were developed not only with each other but also with God. We were taught the different aspects of God and how we should apply them in our lives. Each of the five sessions brought about different themes on how we should “level up” in our relationship with God. This year we had five very special guests as our speakers: our beloved youth leaders!!!

The small things in life

The first lesson was an important session on the small things in life. We were taught by David Giang on how God can, and will partner with us in the small things in our lives, to bring glory to His name.

Worship and love

To further understand worship, Aaron Yuan taught us a lesson that worship starts with love and worship is not only a song but the one and only gift we can give God. I learnt that worship starts with God’s love for us, not our love for Him.

God’s timing

The thing I took away most was from the third session, taught by Annabel Giang. The lesson was from John 11 (the resurrection of Lazarus) and Matthew 7:11, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” It shows that God will provide for us but we need to wait for His timing.

Relying on God’s strength

Next, we had Zai Liang who taught us from the book of Daniel - the different challenges Daniel went through. I learnt that “By not relying on our own strength but on God’s strength, we will see better changes in our lives that point towards God’s glory.”

Failures

For the final session we learnt from the life of Joseph. We were brought through the story of Joseph by Anne, how when we face failures in our lives, we want to return to the position before we failed, but God’s plan is to put us higher than we have ever been. Everyone enjoyed the youth camp thoroughly throughout the entirety of the camp. It truly was an amazing camp where we experienced the presence and power of God through Worship and His Word.

From pursuing worldly success to Godly satisfaction

Reach / Summer 2019

By John Manzo

My relationship with Jesus Christ began when I finished my nursing course at the university in the Philippines. I was 22 years old and I had no idea what my future held for me. I grew up knowing and believing in Jesus. I went to a catholic church on Sundays occasionally with my family, and my parents sent me to a catholic school. However, I did not have a relationship with Jesus, until one day a friend of mine introduced me to Him, and without hesitation, I accepted Him in my life as my Lord and Saviour. Since then God has blessed me with many things that I never would have imagined. I met my then girlfriend Eva who is now my wife of 19 years. I was offered a job overseas, together with her, in the Middle East. I believed that God placed me in a Muslim country for me to see that He can be everywhere even in an Islamic territory. In Saudi Arabia, I met my Filipino boss who attended a Christian underground church. He introduced me to his church where I matured as a Christian. Eventually, I got baptised in a body of water that was part of the Red Sea. It was one of the most memorable days of my life. In 2000 I married my lovely wife Eva in the Philippines. I left for the United Kingdom to work soon after she gave birth to our first born. During my time there I did not attend any church and I backslid, but God picked me up and poured out His blessings upon me. Five years later I came to Australia with my family. I believe that God led us here for a reason - to be planted in a church and to grow our faith in Christ Jesus. Eva and I were looking for a church in Melbourne, and in 2007, she met a wonderful Christian lady, Kemi, at her workplace. Kemi introduced us to Reach Community Church.

13

I was selfish, prideful, and impatient, but Jesus gave me a new heart and changed me to a better person. After I accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour for the second time, I came to know what it meant to be truly satisfied. I am still a hard worker, but now I look at things from a different perspective. I no longer feel empty, I am filled with a sense of purpose. I am hungry to know what the Bible says about being the right kind of husband, the right model of a father and the right servant of our Lord. I am amazed by God’s grace and forgiveness, as He continues to show me what “success” is and how to live the only life that truly satisfies – a life covered by the blood of Jesus.

God gave me a heart to reach out to disadvantaged people. I know what it is like to have nothing because I had been in that situation before. My desire to help the poor started when I was involved in giving relief goods to the victims of severe typhoon in the Philippines. I have been to two mission trips to the Philippines, teaching leaders and the community basic life support and health education, but most importantly sharing the word and the love of God to a multitude of adults and kids. God had deployed me for the expansion of His kingdom, taking His authority to touch and change people’s lives. I found satisfaction in doing God’s work. I had ministered to my mother, my siblings and their family, and led them to salvation. I have opened my home for bible study for many years and now lead a cell group in Deer Park. All of these I could not have achieved without God’s strength and wisdom, for I am nothing without Him.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Come and see what the LORD has done

By Troy Truong It was late afternoon of Friday 19th December 2014, and I was getting stressed regarding whether the Occupancy Permit could be issued before the surveyor closed for Christmas. If not, we would have to wait till mid-January next year when they re-opened. The entire church waited with bated breaths, as the lease for our church services had already lapsed, and we were having church services at various homes. Then, at 6pm, against impossible odds, the prized certificate arrived! Finally, the building was officially Reach Community Church. Sure, they say God is never late, but He is not early either! We had our inaugural service the very next day, which was a Christmas Celebration. Naturally, the entire building was abuzz with melody, merriment and joyous laughter! Most striking of all, everyone looked dazzling! Sure, patrons were all attired in their Christmas bests, but you got to hear me out here; the lavishly appointed new building made everyone look glamorous! Soon, word got out into the neighbourhood about what God had done. And in the weeks and months that followed, aspiring churches and their leaders came to glean

ideas, and be inspired to get their own church building projects off the ground. We found ourselves becoming a beacon of strength for various churches, as though the building had become their own safe harbour. Organisations and leaders of various Christian walks used our building for seminars and events to this day. Even the neighbourhood started changing; from once a deadbeat end of town to a hive of upcoming luxury apartments, and new businesses glamming up their own pads, to ensure that a humble church does not outclass them in style. All the older neighbours marvel in amazement at what we have done to transform a lifeless, tattered warehouse into a modern, high-end establishment, standing proud and glowing pretty at what was once a forgotten corner of town. When you walk inside the building, it not only emanates class and style reminiscent of an uptown hotel, the building design just flows. A drinks counter flanked by highly raked timber screens wrapping the modern staircase. Natural light radiates over beautifully adorned fabricated timber walls and choice materials throughout.

And, once you enter the auditorium, you are greeted with a sense of tranquillity, where the pace slows, with softly dimmed lighting, impressively lined feature walls, prominent stage area, and a versatile, modular, openable wall, allowing for the foyer and auditorium to marry into one huge space. The entire design is to ensure that it will accommodate any group, any function, any event, on any given day of the week, and to do it in style. The way we run our operations radiates to visitors, that in no uncertain terms cleanliness and tidiness are the order of the day. Even after occupying the place for five years, it still looks stunningly new as it did the day we made it our home, thanks in part for the quality materials selected, but in large, because we ensured everyone knows we expect respect for this property the

moment they walk in. They say, monkeys do what monkeys see, so we don’t monkey around being tidy, clean and orderly.

In the five years we have occupied the building, we have seen weddings, and many young families welcoming broods, whilst those younger ones are now in Youth or Young Adults group. There is a sense of pride and belonging in this building. Through it all, God remains faithful in taking us from humble beginnings, sojourning through one tenancy to the next, then provided us with an extravagant home, in what is seemingly an odd end of the neighbourhood. Take a moment to look around; before we were planted here, where was the closest charismatic church to represent Him, in this far-left precinct? Looking back, our journey is invariably the modern adaptation of the exodus out of Egypt. We sojourned in places not our own, then through miracles and adversities, God brought us into a home He intended for us long, long ago. And, that’s how our God rolls!

Reach / Summer 2019

Upstairs, the numerous rooms are set-up for various uses on any given day of the week. The balcony sweeps a commanding view over the expansive foyer below, with panelled suspended ceilings seemingly aloft unassisted above.
