It is a dream car of sorts for Norwegians—Il Tempo Gigante is a full scale replica of the car featured in the children’s stop-motion animation movie, Pinchcliffe Grand Prix by Ivo Caprino. This steampunk jalopy is the most famous movie car of the Land of the Midnight Sun. Il Tempo Gigante is that perfect 50s gangster car souped up with an engine from the nightmare minds of Norwegian tinkers. Like a spooked out rig like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang gangster cars. The movie is about an old Norwegian cycle repair man, inventor Reodor Felgen living on a distant mountain top in Norway. Together with his two helpers,
a pessimistic hedgehog, Ludvig and a cheerful crow, Solan. Suddenly supported by funding from a rich Arabian sheik, he builds the racing car to end all racing cars: Il Tempo Gigante! How can anyone in the world not know this car? The cartoon was released in 1975 and is based on characters from a series of books by Norwegian cartoonist and author Kjell Aukrust. The family that made the hit movie also made a full-size working version of the stop-motion animated car, and it’s a hit wherever it goes! Film lore has it that George Lucas used the race scene from this movie as an inspiration for the StarWars Pod race. The full-scale replica of the Gigante measures 6.70 metres, or a trifle over 22 feet, from cranking handle to exhaust pipe, and
has a beam of 2.48 metres (8 feet). Built in its entirety at the Caprino Filmcenter studios in Norway, it took 12 months to put together, and was carried out under the vigilant eye of the Ministry of Transport inspectors, so that the finished article satisfied all safety regulations. The replica Gigante is licensed as a veteran car. This beautiful replica weighs some 6000 pounds, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km an hour in just about 6 seconds. It cost a fortune to build it. If Norwegians can make a jalopy look this precious, wait til they see the best of Filipino Jeepney pimp. Maybe it isn’t too late for local builders to have something as rude as this swagger around Manila. Even a traffic jam would be tolerable if it were a “Wacky Races” logjam. A racing car to end all racing cars should always look like this in real life. Not just in children’s cartoons.
Reodor the bicycle repairman and his assistants, Ludwig the hedgehog, and Solan the crow
With two engines packing twelve cylinders and kicking at 1200 horsepower, it can produce a boost guaranteed to register 5.3 on the Richter scale according to the cartoon. In real life, the replica can’t even race a real supercar.

Future Possibilities for Spacewalkers If our space scientists and materials researchers make breakthroughs in suit technology. We may expect suits that can generate a quantum gravity field shield that can contain its own pressurized environment and allow the kosmonaut or astronaut to work just as fast and as vigorous as if he were working in earth gravity and the bulk of the suit would be further minimized. Continuing innovations and development of exo-suits may allow man to ultimately set foot elsewhere in the Solar System or beyond in the near future.

EMERGING SCIENTIFIC FIELDS
Exo-Meteorology Cassini has captured something NASA scientists have never seen before: A massive thunder-andlightning storm surrounding the girth of Saturn. Like exo-oceanographers and exo-geologists, exometeorologists are interested in studying natural processes which occur on planets other than Earth. Now that astronomers are able to peer more closely into the inner-workings of nearby planets and moons, they're increasingly able to track atmospheric conditions and weather patterns. Jupiter and
Organic Electronics
Saturn, with their impossibly large weather systems, are piquing the interest of scientists. Mars has regularly occurring dust storms that we want to study. Outside our solar system, more planets are being studied by exo-meteorologists. Signs of extraterrestrial life on an exoplanet may even be detected by organic signatures in atmospheres. Elevated carbon dioxide levels are one of the markers of an industrial-age civilization.
Electronics are usually associated with inert and inorganic conductors and semiconductors, like copper and silicon. A new manufacturing process is emerging that uses conductive polymers and conductive small molecules — both of which are carbon-based. This science involves the design, production and putting together of organic and inorganic materials. This has spurred the development of new miniaturization and nanofabrication technology and circuit design. Think cyborgs or replicants.
Nutrigenomics
Quantum Biology Physicists are still arguing over the most viable theories of quantum effects for almost forever. In quantum theory, subatomic particles defy our sensibilities by disappearing from one place and reappearing in other, or by being in two places at once, and this system of matter is now being used as a model for creating better functional systems; from computer processing to explaining biological processes. As scientists see with increasing clarity, practically everything in nature may be explained by quantum mechanics. The best example is photosynthesis — a remarkably efficient system in which plants (and some bacteria) build the molecules they need by using energy from sunlight. It turns out that photosynthesis may in fact rely on the "superposition" phenomenon, where spurts of energy explore all possible paths, then settle on the most efficient one.
Also known as nutritional genomics, this is the study of the close interaction between food and genetic expression. Nutritional scientists working in this field seek to understand the role of genetic variables and dietary response including the ways nutrients affect our genes. Food has long term effects on our health — and it starts at the molecular level. Finding out how the quantity and quality of nutritional molecular phytochemicals affect cellular functions at the genetic level is a primary concern for scientists invovled in this field of study. Nutrigenomics works both ways; our genes influence our dietary preferences, and vice-versa. A key goal of nutrigeneticists is to establish personalized nutrition — matching what we eat with our own unique genetic constitutions. This would make for an ideal nutrition program that can heal and strengthen and even cure genetic and hereditary conditions through a diet using nutrigenomics. With today’s fad diets competing for everyone’s attention, a nutrigenetic diet will offer a more precise and effective therapy for any health concerns.
It's also possible that avian navigation, DNA mutations (via quantum tunneling), and even our sense of smell, relies on quantum effects.
Cognitive Economics
It still may be a highly speculative and controversial field, but its practitioners look to the day when insights gleaned from studying nature via quantum mechanics may result in new drugs and biomimetic systems (with biomemetics being another emergent scientific field, where biological systems and structures are used to create new materials and machines).
Economics used to be the art of explaining market consumption based on historical reference and educated guesses about the future. Now the field is being integrated with traditional scientific disciplines to be more precise. Not to be confused with behavioral economics (what we do — in the context of economic decision making), cognitive economics is about how we think. Leigh Caldwell, who runs a blog dedicated to the field, puts it this way: Cognitive economics (or finance) involves models of how people make decisions to devise a model of large-scale economic behaviors. Figuring out consumption patterns along with theories about rationality and decision making is the baseline. To help them with this, cognitive economists consider the related fields of cognitive science and computational economics, along with theories about rationality and decision making.
CUTTING EDGE

Thinking is not left brain / right brain mojo anymore. What you bring to mind is an event and process that is a puzzle of both science and philosophy. Is it because one has a soul? As intelligent beings, we create symbols in our minds to represent how we figure out the world around us and what we should be doing in the next hour. Thoughts are a variety of processes depending on who you ask: A psychologist deciphers intentions. A philosopher explains abstractions. A neuroscientist says certain areas in your brain will register electromagnetic activity based off a scan.
but humans have symbols decoded in their mind by a verbal and written language. Range and sophistication of human thought is only limited by the ability of his language to express what he has in mind. The human brain can solve problems whose level of complexity and abstraction would confuse even the smartest animals—no land bound animal can think of a way to fly using a machine. Language enables us to allow each other to critically evaluate our own thoughts.
sense a thing or object. We can think about things that are far removed from us in time and space, past, future, abstract or concrete, what exists or what does not exist... such that it outstrips the capacity of perception. Problems that come into mind sometimes get resolved outright or after letting the problem stand and letting the thought about the solution come naturally like sleeping on it until the morning.
What is thought and why do we think?
WHAT THINKING INVOLVES
THE THINKING PROCESS THE NATURE OF THINKING There was a time when the act of thinking was believed to be such a noble attribute that explaining it as some rudimentary mechanical process was rejected by the powers that be; who preferred the idea that any entity capable of thought REQUIRED A SOUL or a non-physical medium. Scientists have since rebuked this fallacy and propose that thoughts involve only physical processes with good reason for this argument: A man thinks because there are events around him that make him respond internally to what he encounters and senses in his environment. What seems to separate animal and human thought processes is language—animals think in raw emotions—anger or fear or bodily sensations or environmental stimuli,
Thought can be a geometrically unique or a divinely quantum phenomenon unique to humans. We bring to mind anything from objects, peoples, places, relationships, abstract concepts, the past, the future, real things, imaginary things, and even think about nothing. Thoughts function like an equation or like a grammar, precise at times or as expressive as we wish. One can associate thoughts with each other to form an interpretation. Thoughts empower humans when putting them together for figuring something out is based on evidence and logic—creating value out of looking at a sequence to find what comes next, checking for strong evidence that an idea works.
MENTAL ACTIVITY AND SENSING Thought as a mental activity differs because one must sense while with thoughts you can ‘perceive’ in your mind without the need to
When posed a question, the human mind first considers options for answers, then lets the solution coalesce or form---sometimes delivering a satisfactory answer, and sometimes not at all. What stern teachers called daydreaming, woolgathering or unfocused thought used to be seen as a wasteful part of our mental faculties. But research has proven it may even be essential, normal and necessary aspect of thought. This is a paradox for scientists because the most productive thought gets done not by concentration. We have is when our mind is wandering—same as in creative thinking.
THOUGHTS AS ENERGY Everything is energy. Even a thought. This according to people who have considered quantum science as a veritable proof of the divine. What is a fleeting instance or imagery in our
minds, is made up of energy. As such, a thought vibrates at a certain frequency. There is the idea put forward by those who believe in the Law of Attraction, that whatever one desires, and thinks of with passion—whether fear or optimism, it is that thing that the person will attract in life. If one lets thoughts guide work to achieve a goal as one is driven by passion, one will be able to get what one wishes for.
The Limit Break Thoughts are not limited by our physical and perceptual limitations. Maybe our biology can inhibit the extent of human thinking in the same way other species may have a limited process of thinking based on their own limits as a species. Blind spots might be there. Lacking a language will seriously set back a mind’s ability to think. When man started to realize that he could figure things out and how they worked and that he could make life better by putting things together in his mind, life went from a test of endurance to what we have now. Despite even bad decisions and misunderstandings. Our future as a species depends entirely on how are thoughts lead us—dystopia or transcendence.
ANCIENT MYSTERIES

Viking Sunstone used for Sunless Sea Navigation Long before the invention of the telescope in the 17th century. Recent evidence suggests that the Vikings also made use of an optical compass as a navigation aid, using the light-splitting and polarizationfiltering properties of Iceland spar to find the location of the sun when it was not directly visible. The stone is used to “depolarize” light, filtering and fracturing it along different axes. “If you put a dot on top of the crystal and look through it from below, two dots will appear. Then you rotate the crystal until the two points have exactly the same intensity or darkness. At that angle, the upward-facing surface indicates the direction of the Sun,” explained Guy Ropars of the University of Rennes in Brittany, who led a team to study the stone.
Legendary Artifacts May Actually Be Quantum Devices Skíðblaðnir or Skidbladnir, in Old Norse, meaning assembled from thin pieces of wood; is the legendary ship of Frey, the God of Weather. Sometimes used by Odin himself, the ship is supposed to be the fastest ship on water and can summon its own wind. After the steerer reaches his location, the ship has the unique ability to be folded up—just like cloth—into one's pocket when not needed. Already, we have seen toys as scalar models that can be ‘folded out’ to ‘supersize’ into some shape or form The Skáldskaparmál, is a legendary spear that is so lethal and accurate that it can strike any target, no matter the skill or strength of the wielder. The spear is said to have been forged by dwarves known as the Sons of Ivaldi under the mastery of the blacksmith dwarf
Dvalin. Loki took the spear from the dwarfs as a result of a scheme he put together to make up for cutting Sif's hair. This weapon might actually be some sort of miniature guided missile so advanced for its time that it was described as a spear because it was the only way for people of that period to describe something that was a projectile weapon with guided accuracy.
Norse Myths: Extra-Terrestrial Technology or Viking Gods? The movie franchise THOR, an adaptation of the Marvel Comics’ popular character shows us a very interesting vision of what an advanced civilization only separated from earth by some time-travel trick or some warp bridge of space and time might be according to our own perception of the mind-boggling. We see advanced kinetic weapons like Thor’s hammer, beings like the Frost Giants—who are even more fearsome than any of their Greek or Roman counterparts because they have quantum control over ambient temperature to create truly deadly weapons of ice, and even the legendary rainbow bridge to our realm, Midgard that seems to be some sort of energy portal between worlds.
Norse technology was deemed by some archaeologist experts as out of context with other cultures at that time. Are the Norse myths actually real ? Handed down to generations through an oral tradition for religious and cultural identity?
And even a Wormhole Generator Bifröst (Bifrost in Scandinavia) is a burning rainbow bridge that reaches between Midgard (Earth world) and Asgard (the realm of the gods). Austrian Germanist Rudolf Simek says that Bifröst either means "the swaying road to heaven." Or this might be a wormhole with visible energies as space and time fold to allow travel between very distant realms. The best way the ancient Norse
could describe the Bifrost with entities coming out of it would be as a “burning rainbow bridge” as they explain what they saw by the best analogy they could make.
Overwhelming the Roman Legionnaire with The Berserkr It is likely that the berserk was actually a member of the cult of Óðinn. These were elite soldiers who led the attacks of a Viking raiding party on any target outpost or ill-defended village. Many tales say "no weapon could bleed them" or "iron could not pierce into him." An immunity to weapons may come from the supernatural animal-skin garments worn by the berserk. Fighters called ulfhednar had wolf shirts for mail-coats. The invulnerability of the berserker may have evolved from the fighter's rage, during which the berserk might even take
wounds, but due to his state of induced madness, take no note of them until the rabid spirit passed from him. Any warrior who continued fighting like a machine while bearing mortal wounds would surely scare even the most seasoned soldier of the time. What people say about shape-changers or those who go into berserk fits is this: that as long as soldiers are in a frenzy nothing is too much for them, but as soon as they're out of it they become much weaker than normal.
Only very experienced pigeon breeders should commit their resources to line breeding method or inbreeding. Inbreeding, when done right can preserve up to 90++ percent of the original traits of your unique champion, and even though recessive traits might show up among offspring, the proper methods used will guarantee that the champion’s traits will be passed on. Familiarity with the history of the bird is necessary so you can single out weaker birds from the line and cull them.
BREEDING METHODS
LINE BREEDING HOMING PIGEONS
When inbreeding, or more precisely line breeding, you can pair father and daughter offspring rather than brother and sister—the farther back the parings the better, because close parings are more likely to bring out recessive traits especially if both birds do not produce consistent strong traits. The only reason to pair father and daughter is for exceptional champion traits that is consistently observed in the line—a guarantee that dominant genes are passed on by both mates. Also, line breeding cannot be undertaken for extended periods because the risk of recessive genes showing up is greater in the long run. The racing qualities of pigeons, race horses etc are based in the first place on the quantitative heredity. Mendel’s genetic rules apply mostly to color or size of pea but not yield per acre—and this also applies to a strain’s flying or racing ability.
TRAINING RACING PIGEONS
For line breeding, mate your champion with his best daughter. If the offspring you produce from inbreeding are strong racers and flyers, the chances of line breeding maintaining the champion traits are stronger.
The training of racing pigeons is of great interest to all fanciers and hobbyists.
FAMILY BREEDING
With 30 pairs of racing pigeons that lay their eggs within a few days of each other and with no casualties you get a bird team of 60 racing pigeons.
But line breeding should be spaced out well so that recessive traits will be kept to a minimum. Eventually the next progeny will be slower and weaker, so most top breeders prevent this by well-planned cross-breeding.
SUCCESSFUL LINE BREEDING Vitality and racing qualities become inferior in the long run if inbreeding is kept as the modus operandi for producing race champions. So breeders breed as many from a line breeding method and cull the weaker birds and keep those with the best vitality—the pedigree will keep a higher concentration of the wanted genes that are present in their blood.
INBREED FIRST TO KEEP BEST TRAITS THEN CROSSBREED FOR BEST RESULTS Retaining traits in offspring means that from both partners those genes lead in special combinations to an extraordinary result. However if these strong genes are not present in both partners the method won’t be worth the work. But when two strains always give excellent results in cross breeding, then it is wise to inbreed both partners first. This method preserves strong genes in and ensures excellent results. Breeding among parent and grandchildren and great grant children is the best method for line breeding. It returns the super traits to the strain and the birds will become the best candidates for cross-breeding after their traits are fixed and preserved.
You can do plenty with a flock of these young birds. • They can be weaned at the same age. • They can be vaccinated at the same age. • They should be ranging or routing at the same age. Start training young racing pigeons after they have been out flying for an extended period of time. Leaving the loft area and familiarizing themselves with the magnetic fields that only birds can detect as a way of navigating. You’re birds get some good exercise and learn how to find their way home. When starting training tosses, note that these are important: • The health of the entire team of racing pigeons, one sick bird can kill an entire flock if not manged properly. • Amount of days spent familiarizing with loft area • Quality of the racing pigeons migrating / homing ability. (genetics) • Train tosses with birds hungry so they fly straight to the loft. • Weather for training racing pigeons. (Avoid Rain, Storms, or High Winds) You can begin training tosses out from 20 miles, 15 miles, 10 miles, 5 miles and 2 miles, starting from the shortest distance then extending farther out in either direction from the loft.
Sir Biboy Enriquez is a pioneer among gamefowl breeders. He is a much sought after breeder with up to 10 bloodlines of the winningest gamefowl breeds on his Firebird Farm in Tanay, Rizal. He was a favorite resource person on Tukaan. a fan favorite, sabong TV show. REACH had an opportunity to interview the Sabungero Stalwart and the advice he shares is as precious to starting hobbyists as it is to longtime fans of the sport.
REACH: You are still in your prime years as both a gamefowl breeder and a competitive participant in big ticket derbies in the local scene. How does your day usually start? Sir Biboy Enriquez: I usually wake up at 5AM tapos magdadasal ng konti bago bababa sa kusina at iinom ng wheatgrass drink.
May bloodline na known for their power and gameness pero grounder ang fighting style. Eventually you will have your own fighting machines.
The gamefowl have to come from a breeder that has been fighting well using those bloodlines for maybe more than 10 years at hindi lang yung naka-tsamba this year or that year ng panalo. Partly business na rin kaya I have to have many bloodlines. We are a member of a Breeder’s Association at we also fight para ma-recognize ang farm. To showcase our roosters. And then after the stag derby season, that is usually August to early December, mga cocks sa World Slasher sa Araneta naman ang labanan. Big fights na lang ang sinasalihan namin. Sa Dumaguete, meron Chinese derby every year. Sa Cebu, meron ding mga derby. Tapos the rest ng extra gamefowl, binebenta na namin.
REACH: Before every big tournament tulad ng World Slasher papaano ang preparation for conditioning yung mga panlaban ninyo? Sir Biboy Enriquez: Every year pumipili yung supervisor ng X number of rooster stags na hindi pabenta or pang-personal. Mayroon sparring session yun ng thrice a week. Mayroon rating yung sparring sessions nila. Nagpapasobra kami ng
kalahati na pabenta tapos kalahati itatago namin panlaban. Yung mga binukod namin na panlaban may preconditioning period yun tapos sparred once or twice a week with a rating sa kilos at sa bitaw. Meron grade A, grade A+, or grade A-, tapos kapag time na ng derby, mga one month before or 25 days before the fight kelangan naming piliin ang gamefowl na panlaban. So ngayon, naguumpisa na sila. The trainers wake up at 4AM tapos sinisimulan ang conditioning according to our system sa gamefowl book ko.
Through experience, may nagkokondisyon malalaman yun.
And to show appreciation niregaluhan ko sila ng gamefowl. May recognition talaga yan.
Kilala ako bilang Kelso Man of the Philippines, kaya Kelso ang mabenta sa amin. Kasi may off-season breeding kami na towards the end of December. Sila naman ang i-harvest namin. Kaya yung naiwan kailangang maubos namin. So yun ang aming cycle.
Sir Biboy Enriquez: Well, itong mga bloodlines for fighting, they will not exist if not for fighting, unlike dogs na nandiyan for a different purpose at hindi ang paglaban sa kapwa aso. Gamefowl were bred to fight. Because ang sabungan is the one gathering place where you can find all walks of life na nandoon, rubbing shoulders with each other to enjoy a common hobbysport.
Gumagaya na rin ang Cebu and I think they’ll do it every year na rin.

PHOTOVOLTAIC GENERATED POWER HAS BECOME AFFORDABLE, EFFICIENT AND FLEXIBLE Solar cells are known as photovoltaics. The process of converting light (photo) into electricity (voltage) happens within a photovoltaic cell. Photovoltaic technology has achieved 15 to 20 per cent efficiency in converting the sun’s rays into electricity. Further R&D promise higher than 20 per cent energy return in the near future! When sunlight hits the cell, and solar cells today are usually made out of silicon, it makes electrons come loose from the atoms that they are attached to. This action then produces electricity as energy is released by the process. And thanks to increased production of photovoltaic panels everywhere, residential solar power has become readily available for both households and industrial users. Whether you buy your own rig or lease electricity from a solar utility provider. Think about it like having all your power needs by soaking what’s free from the sky.
American Southwest, if covered with today’s industry-standard 15-to-20-percent-efficient solar panels, will be enough to power the entire United States. The sun has unlimited potential as a power source--radiating four hundred trillion trillion watts every second of every day.
Just how much Energy is Floating down on our Planet as Sunshine? The Sun works by emitting solar radiation that is equivalent of 1,367 watts of power per square meter. Also known as the ‘solar constant’. Enough sunlight falls on the earth’s surface every hour to meet the entire world’s energy needs for one year or almost 7,000 times more energy to the Earth’s surface than we globally generate and use right now. A plot of roughly 100 miles by 100 miles in the
PhotoVoltaic systems use semiconductor cells, or modules, that convert sunlight directly into electricity. The PV cells are set up in the form of flat panels that are usually mounted on rooftops or canopies, or built into roofing shingles and other building materials. Electricity production ranges from four to 50 kilowatts. On average, a 10-kW PV system can generate between 12,000 to 14,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a year, or a little more than the power used in a typical home. A PV system during daytime generates power from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., reaching its maximum output between noon and 1 p.m. PV modules actually generate more power at lower temperatures. Like most other electronic devices, the converters operate more efficiently when it’s cooler. PV modules are also very durable, designed to withstand harsh environments, including arctic cold, desert heat, tropical humidity, winds of more than 125 miles per hour,
LIVING ‘OFF THE GRID’ An increasing number of people, are choosing to live ‘off the grid’ as a lifestyle choice. You can enjoy solar energy but serious compromises are made. The amount of electricity generated is dependent on the sunshine you receive. Keeping a well stocked fridge running 24-7 might be a problem. Power from solar is usually stored in batteries for later use, when the Sun is not shining. Photovoltaic cells may be attached to just about any structure or used free standing so freedom from bills and self-sufficiency might be a choice that people find as a better trade off.
A Japanese construction firm wants to save Japan - and ultimately the entire planet - from a burgeoning power crises by turning the moon into am off-planet solar power plant. Tokyo-based Shimizu Corp. is designing a belt of solar panels 250 miles wide around the equator of our Moon and then relay the streaming supply of energy to “receiving stations” on Earth via lasers or microwave transmitters. “The Luna Ring ... translates this dream into reality through ingenious ideas coupled with advanced space technologies.” Once completed, the belt would span 6,800 miles around the Moon equator and ensure constant exposure to the sun - without the interference of cloud cover - and a continuous and sustained feed of energy to the Earth. The projected Japanese “Luna Ring” will be capable of producing 13,000 terawatts of power for Earth. “A shift from economical use of limited resources to the unlimited use of clean energy is the ultimate dream of mankind,” Shimizu says on its web site.
RECENT BREAKTHROUGHS IN SOLAR
Cellulose Solar Cells! Trees Provide Effective Photovoltaic Resource Working with a team from Purdue University, researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology‘s Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE), have developed material that functions as more efficient, and even recyclable organic solar cells made
from trees. A substrate sourced not only from trees but from other plants as well can be implanted with polymer solar cells for a PhotoVoltaic patch that can even be easily recycled in room-temperature water.
Think Windows Made of Clear Solar Cells! Not long from today, clear window panes will soon be powering homes, workplaces and even vehicles. An exciting new organic solar cell with levels of transparency higher than current tech, as well as better energy conversion efficiency was developed by Researchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO). Their breakthrough research was published in the journal Nature Photonics. Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) cells will eventually be available for energy applications in small electronics, appliances
and devices such as displays, tablets, smart phones, and study leader Professor Jordi Martorell expects his team to achieve the extremely high transparencies and efficiencies required to make them useful. Current silicon-based tech solar cells are limited by placement and size. Renewed interest in a technology that has been around for about 30 years was initiated by the low cost for manufacturing OPVs. Soon researchers will develop the ability to print solar cells onto just about any surface at cost effective methods.

HEALTH & HEALING
A staple of Indian spicy staples like Biryani rice and curry, Turmeric is an Indian spice-root, ground into powder that has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor, and smells like a mix of orange and ginger. Turmeric has attracted surprising attention lately because scientific research has uncovered strong evidence that the active ingredient—curcumin— can cure a wide range of ailments, fight cancer and even prevent degenerative diseases. From the root of Curcuma longa plant, which has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh, Turmeric is now the hottest food supplement that can be touted as another miracle cure.
Getting Your Curcumin Choose organically grown turmeric because the root will not have been irradiated. Color is not a measure of the quality of its medicinal or healing potency. Available in supermarkets, better products can be found at specialist local spice stores or ethnic markets in your area selling a choice selection of dried herbs and spices with superior quality and freshness than supermarket brands. You make fresh turmeric powder by boiling, drying and then grinding the rhizome into a fine consistency. The powdered spice is best kept in a tightly sealed container and stored in a cool, dark and dry place. Fresh turmeric rhizome (root stock) should be stored in the refrigerator. Curcumin has the highest concentration in pure turmeric over any other curry spice.
ASHITABA (ACETABA) HERB For High Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Therapy
In Your Food
Ashitaba is a large herb that grows primarily in the central region of Japan. Its root, leaf, and stem are used to make medicine. Known locally as Acetaba, the vine grows almost anywhere and is easy to propagate. For health treatments, Ashitaba is used as a remedy for “heartburn” and stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout, constipation, and hay fever. It is also used for treating cancer, smallpox, fluid retention, blood clots, and food poisoning. Women use it to increase the flow of breast milk.
•Not just used in curries. This spice is delicious on healthy sautéed apples, and healthy steamed cauliflower and onions. •Mixed with brown rice with raisins and cashews turmeric, cumin and coriander make an awesome spicy Indian blend. •Although turmeric is generally a staple ingredient in curry powder, some people like to add a little extra of this spice when preparing curries. Serve with raw cauliflower, celery, sweet pepper, jicama and broccoli florets.

Think you're invincible and can stand all-nighters forever? Think again.
Research has shown that sleep is when the brain takes time to drain itself of toxic metabolic waste, which if accumulated in the brain can harm brain functions, and kill off neurons which can potentially cause neurodegenerative disorders.
The brain actually has its own internal ecosystem surrounded by the blood-brain barrier, which controls what enters and leaves the organ; but does not use the lymphatic system puzzling scientists figuring out thebrain’s own metabolism.
The lymphatic system is our body’s own cleaning mechanism and removes cellular waste from the human body. A fluid called lymph collects waste byproducts from the cells and tissues in the body and returns the flotsam into the bloodstream to be filtered from the body through our kidney.
The Glymphatic System In a study last year, Rashid Deane, a researcher with the University of Rochester Medical Center and his research team discovered that the brain has its own
special waste removal system, which they described as the ‘glymphatic system, ‘ named after the glial cells that function during the waste removal process and the lymphatic system. The glymphatic system is made up of star-shaped glial cells called astrocytes, which form a network of water channels surrounding the brain’s blood vessels. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows into the brain along the channels that surround the arteries functioning like the lymph. The fluid then washes through the brain tissues and intermixes with the waste-filled interstitial fluid that surrounds the cells of the brain. Finally, the CSF collects in the channels around the veins and drains out of the brain, taking the metabolic waste with it. Finding out that the glymphatic system is responsible for clearing the brain of amyloid beta — a byproduct that many researchers believe can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The degenerative disease may be caused when the glymphatic system is weakened and cannot function well.
Sleeping Remove Toxins in Your Brain The researchers checked for differences in the glymphatic system between sleeping and waking states. Waste clearance may be inefficient if the brain is taking in sensory and other information. The scientists also
How to Use Ashitaba Leaves for your Healing Regimen Ashitaba can be used as tea or boiled as food additives to your meal. You can also use your Ashitaba plants as a healthy ingredient in soups. Add one fresh Ashitaba leaf or shoot for every two cups of soup. Stir the Ashitaba leaves into the soup at the end of the cooking process so they do not impart a bitter taste to your dish. Or add them as garnish before the soup goes to the table. If your Ashitaba plant is small, you can harvest the leaves individually rather than clipping an entire stalk. To harvest your Ashitaba plant leaf by leaf, choose mature leaves from the base of the stem or shoot. The mature leaves contain more of the active ingredients than the new shoots.
discovered that amyloid beta levels are higher during awake periods, compared with sleep. The production of the metabolite and other byproducts are different while you’re asleep. The brain just disposes of its waste better while you’re asleep. In an experiment with mice researchers discovered that the flow of CSF through the interstitial space — the gaps between the cells — during waking is only about five percent of what it is during sleep. Seen in the waking mouse brain, the interstitial space makes up 13 to 15 percent of the brain’s volume, the researchers found. When the mouse is sleeping, space increases to between 22 and 24 percent. So the flow of CSF and the size of the interstitial space both increase during sleep. And when tested for amyloid-beta, the glymphatic system cleared the waste twice as fast in the sleeping brains than in the waking brains.
The Link to Neurodegenerative Diseases Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases are linked with not only the buildup of waste products, but also lack of sleep. If a person doesn’t get enough sleep for a long time, amyloid beta and other waste could accumulate in the brain and like poison destroy neurons, leading to dementia, Deane said.

I couldn’t afford to make a clock out of metal so the best thing to do was to try and make them out of wood and make them mimic a metal gear. This goes back to me and model airplanes and I tried to handcraft each piece of the clock like a model kit. with the gears was me wanting to make a clock with the working parts showing. I didn’t know how to make the clock parts at first. And I couldn’t afford to make a clock out of metal so the best thing to do was to try and make them out of wood and make them mimic a metal gear. This goes back to when I was a kid and addicted to model kits like cars and airplanes and all that geeky stuff. I tried to handcraft each part then put them together like a model kit.
Extraordinary woodcrafter Dale Mathis showing one of his artifacts.
Wall Clocks and Desks have never been as steampunk artiste as the intricate woodcraft-artwork of Dale Mathis, an American with a studio in Las Vegas, workingwith Filipino business partner Chris Vengzon in their Pampanga workshop and showroom. Dale’s limited series ‘artifacts’ are bought by celebrities in the U.S. and his work is exhibited at 10 or more museums in the States. REACH was fortunate to interview the well-mannered, inspiring gentleman and his marketing point man Russell about Dale Mathis Studios.
REACH: What makes clockwork and gears your choice of theme and material for art constructs particularly Clockwork and Steampunk Desks? DALE: It goes back to when I was a kid. My father was a carpenter and so was his father. Dad was a gear guy. I guess I kind of picked up on that as a kid and just incorporated everything that dad did in the work and craft that I do. But I do remember a specific reason why I like Clockwork Art. It goes back to when I was a bachelor. I was married in 1996 before getting divorced, and I went back to living on my own again, and I got my first apartment by myself. I wanted the place to look really, really cool—like ‘MTV Cribs’. So I built this big giant wall clock to match the furniture. Then it just kind of evolved into art pieces.
REACH: On a craftwork website video, I was amazed that you actually make the wooden gears yourself. The product Looks sweet. How would you as an artist tell kids how to make good art from scratch? What ideas can they put together? DALE: I would definitely encourage other artists to experiment with other mediums and material and good ideas. The thing
REACH: Right now, are all of the designs from your workshop coming from Dale Mathis? Russell, how is it working with Dale’s designs in the Philippine workshop and how does his work process go? how do you guys market your art in the U.S.?
REACH: Is craftwork really how everything will be made in the future? Will intense ideas and craftsmanship offer hope to artists for striking gold? What can other Americans looking at the country for business partner opportunities expect? DALE: It depends on the direction that artists want to go. Up until recently we have done limited edition pieces. One of 100 or 1 of 250 like that. If you are looking to create a business
DALE: We are creating a new line of work called the Designer Series. Now that I have things to do everything for the company 24-7. In the meantime, Chris and I have brought in a new designer to work off my stolid work. We also needed a line of work that is neutral to offset the very masculine theme of the Art of Dale Mathis. We’re coming up with a line of Art Clocks that are attractive to female art fans. Me and Russ are working on more product design ideas for the Studio in the future. Russell is my marketing manager in the Philippines and my partner with Chris. We have been talking about expanding the business into other directions. One of the biggest problems with Dale Mathis Art is ticket prices on the art pieces. The average piece goes from US$2000 to US$30,000. This kind of cuts out the regular guy that loves what we do. Most of our biggest fans are the regular guys. So we have been discussing ways of getting our fans what they want. We are making something that has the same look and feel as the bigger ticket items but at less cost just like the Kickstarter project with the playing card deck casings with gears built into them. RUSSELL: Dale is in a partnership with a Filipino businessman, Chris Vengzon, who has 25 years of experience with manufacturing. Dale showed his art pieces to Chris and necessary adjustments were made in engineering design for producing the artwork locally as Dale’s workshop is based in Pampanga. They hired local designers and taught the craftsmen how to build and make the woodcraft art. All the local designers are working the items under the direction of Dale Mathis. We have just tapped other regions in Asia like China, with Chris Vengzon helping us get into the CHINA-ASEAN EXPO with the help of CITEM. We’ve just had our first exhibit in the Middle-East, in Dubai with the help of the DTI. Locally we coordinate with, and support F.A.M.E’s yearly showcase of local talent. Including shows with CFID. We also market the artwork through our website, The Art of Dale Mathis..
or a product—like say Clock Art on a mass production level, the odds are you’ll make a lot of money compared to what we do. But as high end limited edition art—it raises the value of your company and you as an artist at a higher level a little bit faster than if you sold it on a Walmart in the U.S. I would definitely encourage business partnerships in the Philippines. Back then, my business partner asked me if I wanted to go to Asia to do business. I definitely encourage business partnerships in the Philippines especially if it is a craft-related business. Chris, my business partner asked me sometime back if I wanted to business in Asia. I asked him, “Do I have to worry about people copying my work?” And he said “Not in the Philippines. In the country you have much more loyalty. It’s more of a family oriented as far as the culture is concerned.” Now, here I am doing more clocks!
