Read 2 Review I never really know what to say when writing a thank you letter. In truth this is a thank you letter as well as a welcome letter. Welcome to the first monthly Read 2 Review magazine. We have achieved so much over the last year in part due to your continued support. Thank you. We have been on some amazing adventures through the past year. There have been some incredible highs and yes a couple of lows but through it all our readers have supported us and we continue to gain more readers every day. We have always strived to provide the best service that we can. We do this because we love reading and working with the authors who make many people happy. We've been given a staggering amount of support through the past year from the millions of books donated for review. We do promise to get there eventually! To the authors who have joined us for spotlights, guest posts, interviews and much more. Everyday offers a new exciting adventure one that we are glad you've been a part of over the past year. When I started Read 2 Review my main goal was to offer the best service I could to any author who asked. I hope that this year I have done that. The goal going forward is to get bigger and stronger, to work with even more authors and to provide an even better service for everyone we work with. I am proud of what Read 2 Review has achieved this year. It has been hard work but it hasn’t felt like work because I have loved every minute of it. Again, I want to thank you for being part of this amazing adventure. This magazine that you are reading right now will be running on Read 2 Review site each month starting in November 2012. We are hoping for authors to be part of it with spotlights, guest posts, interviews, discount offers and much more. There is an application form at the back of this month magazine to apply to appear in next month’s edition. We really want not only to feature authors but bloggers and publishers too. If you’re interested please get in touch by using the form on the last page. Again, we want to make this the best experience we possibly can for everyone involved. Also, if you have any suggestions to improve the magazine please contact us. You can always, unless we’re on holiday, get us at our admin email. As you read, we hope that you enjoy the magazine. We hope to hear from you soon! Each day the Read2Review site offers news, new books, authors and information, so be sure to come back often. You'll be glad you did. Thank you very much for your support over the past year! We couldn’t have done it without you! With much Love!! Kate ~*~ “I wanted to take this opportunity to say it's been wonderful working with Read2Review. I first fell in love with the website as a reader. I found so many new Authors to me. In fact, I check it daily to make sure I don't miss a great new book or author. As an author this site has given me excellent exposure to both readers http://read2review.com/

Read 2 Review and other authors. Thank you!” Marian Lanouette, If I Fail, A Jake Carrington Mystery “Read2Review is not only a great resource for readers; it’s also current and a lot of fun. They offer readers reviews, guest posts and awesome giveaways. I know because I’ve thrown my own books into the already abundant pots being offered. They are very responsive and great to work with.” Lia Fairchild, Author of In Search of Lucy “Kate and the team at Read2Review have been such a blessing to me in my writing journey. Not only are they a pleasure to work with, but their passion for books and supporting authors was evident from the moment I first stumbled upon them. Both my current books, A Ranger’s Tale and Serenya’s Song, have benefited from their reviews, group reads, and events. I had a blast with Kate’s newest endeavour, Page Turners Book Tours, this past summer. Since I’ve been involved with Read2Review, I’ve gained new fans, but most importantly, I’ve gained new friends. I’d recommend R2R to any author or reader who’s looking for an honest and friendly venue for all things book-related!” Mysti Parker, Author of A Ranger’s Tale And Serenya’s Song ~*~ We would like to thank the following for contributing to this issue of Reader’s Shadow… Bloomsbury Publishing, Candice Stockstell, Carmen DeSousa, Dan Wright, Jamie Haden, Kathryn Meyer Griffith, Kevis Hendrickson, M.M. Read 2 Review

This gripping new novel explores the impacts of Schizophrenia on patients and the people who love them. Caitlin Kane knows more about the impact of schizophrenia than most people could imagine. Both her parents were afflicted with the devastating mental illness, a disease that tends to run in families, and Caitlin and her brother grew up trying to navigate the chaos of living with two schizophrenics. Her tumultuous childhood left Caitlin determined to forge a peaceful and serene life for herself. Now 32, she is living her dream. Married to her best friend, she and her husband are raising two bright young children in the suburbs of Seattle. While her unusual upbringing has left Caitlin with emotional scars, she enjoys the love and support of her extended family and her challenging career as a pediatric nurse. But no matter how hard she tries, she can't shake the obsessive fear that the family illness will strike again, robbing her of

her mind or stealing away the sanity of one or both of her children. Prologue: Every morning when I first wake up I wonder and I worry. Before getting out of bed, before registering my full, aching bladder, before remembering what day it is and what responsibilities await -- I assess myself for signs of the disease. I roll my eyes around the room, looking for phantoms that may have appeared while I was sleeping. For odd, moving sights, like my dresser transformed into a rolling automobile or roaring lion. To make sure that the clock radio on my nightstand or the framed photos on the bookshelves haven't cloned themselves overnight and morphed into twins or even triplets. Then I listen carefully. I hear Jason

http://read2review.com/

Read 2 Review snoring lightly beside me. I hear the ticking of the living room clock. I hear the jangle of Rosco's tags as he rolls over on his bed in the corner of our room. I hold my breath and listen for mysterious voices or alien noises. Then, once I'm sure I'm not hearing any unusual, strange sounds, I ask myself---silently so not to wake my sleeping husband----a series of questions. Who am I? What's my address? Where do I work? How old are my children? What's my husband's name? Who's the president? Only after the correct responses to the first five pop into my mind, and I chuckle to myself after answering "Calvin Coolidge" to the sixth question because I know good and well that Barack Obama currently resides in the White House, do I know I'm safe for another day. If I still have my sense of humor, and apparently my faculties, I've still escaped it. Escaped the mental illness that afflicted and consumed my mother, my father and my brother. Escaped the schizophrenia that robbed them of their minds and me of a childhood. I know that at 32 my chances of developing schizophrenia are miniscule and keep shrinking with every passing month. Despite that, I'm still obsessively terrified of developing the devastating mental illness that was an ever-present part of my formative years. It's shaped who I’ve become, and I've worked for more than half my life to recover from its impact. My father, mother and brother all lost the genetic lottery, and their misfortune continues to ripple through my life even today. My name, at least the name I go by now, is Caitlin. That's the name I chose for myself 18 years ago when I fled my childhood home of horrors. I cast off

the name on my birth certificate for the new one in hopes of casting off the madness that was my family. Chapter One: There are a lot of popular misconceptions swirling around about schizophrenia. Some people, especially those who are fortunate enough not to have had first-hand experience with this devastating, disabling mental illness, think schizophrenics suffer from a split, or two vastly different personalities. I imagine they picture someone like a benevolent, beloved school teacher who bakes cookies for the neighbours in her spare time turning into a vicious profanity spewing crone who butchers small cuddly animals with her bare hands during episodes. Others, who are steeped in popular culture, believe all schizophrenics are geniuses, like the Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash. These kinds of misconceptions are annoying, but not surprising, considering there are so many mysteries about schizophrenia that have yet to be solved. Despite billions of dollars worth of research, scientists have not yet pinpointed the causes of schizophrenia, although they believe a combination of genetics, brain chemistry and brain abnormality are involved. They do know that there is a hereditary basis for the susceptibility of the disease, meaning that schizophrenia often runs in families. Unfortunately, it runs in mine...... Purchase links Some facts about Schizophrenia: * Schizophrenia affects 1 out of every 100 people; including both of Caitlin's parents. * A devastating mental illness,

Read 2 Review schizophrenia has a genetic component and runs in families, like Caitlin's. * Caitlin has a tumultuous childhood trying to make sense of the world while living with parents who often don't make sense themselves. * Like many people who grow up with schizophrenic parents, Caitlin can't shake the obsessive fear that the family illness will strike again, robbing her of her mind or stealing away the sanity of one or both of her children. * Meticulously researched, this novel sheds a light on mental illness, and how it impacts patients and the people who love them. Written by a long time journalist, this engaging novel will have you rooting for Caitlin from the first page. “I really enjoyed reading The Tribe’s Bride. I loved the history throughout the storyline of the book. The element of time travel added another level of suspense. I found the book very interesting and easy to read! I cannot wait for the next one!” Erica Ortega, R.E. Butler's Website When a university job interview goes south, Carrie Wade isn’t certain that she’ll ever find work in her field of ancient Native American Culture. Knowing the only job waiting for her is waitressing at a coffee house, Carrie indulges in a post-disappointment shopping trip. An old necklace in an antique store window catches her eye and she immediately feels as if she cannot walk away without owning it. The very last thing she needs to do is squander her savings by investing in a necklace that may have, at one time, belonged to one of the tribes she studied…but she can’t help herself. When she tries on the precious necklace at home, she passes out and wakes up in

the tent of the necklace’s original owners, three Native American tribesmen from the late 1600s. Will she be able to get back home to the future or will she find out that the one place she was always meant to be was back in time as the tribe’s bride? This novella contains m/f/m/m interaction, three handsome brothers that will do anything for each other and their woman, and a magical necklace that brings them all together.

The Gigolo’s Bride (The Necklace Chronicles, Book 2)

A Midwesterner by birth, R.E. spent much of her childhood rewriting her favorite books to include herself as the main character. Later, she graduated on to writing her own books after "retiring" from her day job as a secretary to become a stay-at-home mom. When not playing with her kids, wrestling her dogs out the door, or cooking dinner for her family, you'll find her typing furiously and growling obscenities to the characters on the screen. Dating Chloe Wagner was a huge mistake, and Jake should have known better—he’s investigating the murder of Chloe’s sister. Now Chloe is the number one suspect in that murder. If she’s convicted, Jake could lose not only his rank, but his job. If that’s not bad enough, he’s got a stalker on his hands, someone who’s threatening his fledgling relationship with the lovely Mia. Things are getting just a little too personal for comfort! Mini excerpt: On days like this, Jake questioned if there was a God. He held the broken, lifeless body of the infant girl in his arms, tears running down his face. He didn’t try to hide them. Jake’s emotions reflected in the eyes of everyone. His partner Louie turned

away and kicked the chair. Jake knew this horror would live with each of them for the rest of their lives. Keith Amara, the morgue assistant, tapped Jake on the shoulder. “I’ll take her.” “She didn’t have a chance.” Jake handed her to Keith. “No, she didn’t.” He lay the child on the stretcher with such care that Jake’s respect for Keith increased immensely. Jake reached down and pulled the sheet up over the baby to conceal her from the morbid crowd that waited in the street below. He never understood the fascination of the onlookers at each crime scene. He believed they hoped to view the body so they could talk about the gruesome details, get their fifteen minutes of fame. Some would offer up a silent

Jake composed himself. Turning to face the suspect, he fisted his hands at his side to contain his fury. The line of the law could be blurred here, Jake understood. Each officer wanted a piece of the creep. Knowing he had to keep a tight rein over the situation, Jake held his voice level when he spoke to Washington. He saw no humanity in the suspect; his act alone proved Washington had none. Looking into Washington’s eyes he observed they were dead, like the child he’d killed. He wore a dirty, wrinkled cotton T-shirt with stained jeans. The front of the jeans showed a large, wet patch where Washington pissed himself. The only thing this creep cared about was his next fix. Jake walked to the body, reached down and uncovered it, and forced himself to look at the baby again. Her head, crushed in on the left side, reminded Jake of a broken hardboiled egg. He could estimate the amount of force that was required to cause such a wound, yet the baby didn’t die immediately. The Pit Stop (This Stop Could be Life or Death) Prologue The ancient train-car looked innocent enough, but the lack of surrounding cars gave Gino Canale pause as he opened the door of his silver rental. The GPS Sheila and he had been using had directed them off the highway in search of gas. But there were no gas stations around, just this one structure in the outskirts of this Northern California town. Sheila opened her door, but he waved her off. “Stay in the car. Let me check this place out.” As usual, she did what she wanted and jumped out anyway. “I have to go. I’ve had to go since that last exit you ignored.” “Fine,” Gino replied, walking toward the entrance, Sheila on his heels. He listened for sounds, but heard nothing. “What do you think?” “I think I need a bathroom—bad!” Gino reached for the knob, but before he could turn the handle, the door screeched open as if the wind had pushed it. A faint sound of bells on the door sounded over his head. “Hello?” he called. His voice faded into the stillness of the store. The only noise came from the creaking of the wood planks below the new Crocs his wife had talked him into buying. “Is anyone here?” he called again. A crackling sound started up behind the counter. Someone had turned on an old AM radio. The music that emanated was reminiscent of old 50’s style music his grandfather loved. “Afternoon,” a man called out in a hoarse voice, popping up from behind the register. “You kids aren’t from around here, are ya?”

“Uh, no, sir,” Gino stuttered, not sure why he couldn’t find his voice. “We’re heading to a wedding, and we just ran low on gas and were wondering if there was a gas station around here.” The man chuckled. “Son, you don’t need gas. You got a full tank.” Gino shook his head. “Excuse me, how would—” Sheila tugged on his arm and gave him the look he knew all too well; they’d stopped a hundred times on this trip. “Sir, is there a restroom my wife could use?” “Round back, but she doesn’t have to go.” “Joe?” An older woman stepped through a doorway on the other side of the room. Gino gasped and grabbed Sheila’s hand, pulling her toward the door. “Let’s get out of here.” “But—” “Trust me. Something isn’t right.” The old man stepped around the counter. “Just a couple of lost souls, Martha.” As the man moved toward them, Gino could feel beads of sweat dampen his forehead, but the man just opened the door, allowing them to leave. “We’ll see yens back here soon.” He lowered his head and looked Gino deep in the eyes. “Don’t you recognize me, son?” Gino pushed Sheila through the doorway toward their vehicle. “What the heck are you doing, Gino?” Gino’s heart pounded in his chest. “That was my Grandpa Joe. He died twenty years ago.”

Read 2 Review A Conversation With Yelna Black with thanks to Bloomsbury Books The world of ballet is a fascinating one that few people really get to see firsthand. What drew you to write about this world? For me, the world of ballet is this old, ancient place tucked away in the modern world. Every time I went to the ballet, I felt like I was stepping back in time. It’s so regimented and rooted in tradition: the positions, the costumes, the mastery of the human body. I loved how elite and mysterious it was. I think this book was a way for me to explore that. The music played a huge role for me. I still remember the first time I listened to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. It was so bizarre and unnerving and chaotic. Later, when I heard the story about its premier in Paris, and how the audience erupted in a mad rage when the music began and the dancers came on stage, I knew I had to write about it. What kind of research did you do for this book? This book was fun to research because it mostly involved watching old recordings of ballets and wandering around New York. I also listened to the scores that Vanessa dances to in the book every day while I wrote, and did a lot of reading about ballet and its history. I also spent a fair amount of time snooping around Lincoln Center. Have you ever tried ballet? Yes, though I’m almost ashamed to even talk about it. I was a disaster. I couldn’t even put my hair in a bun. It was just a floppy mess of bobby pins. Very embarrassing. I was so bad that in our winter performance of the Nutcracker, they had me and a few other less graceful dancers just walk on

stage with horns and then walk off. I eventually quit when they told us we had to learn to do the splits by New Years. Do you see yourself, or anyone you know, in any of your characters? Definitely. All of the characters have a little bit of myself in them, and TJ, Blaine, Steffie, and Justin all share similarities with my friends. When I took ballet lessons, I had a male teacher who was charming but firm, like Josef, and who shares a lot of his physical characteristics. Though ultimately, all of the characters are singular. What were your favorite books when you were Vanessa’s age? I read a lot of Kurt Vonnegut, and a lot of horror stories. Poe, Shirley Jackson, Stephen King. I also really enjoyed 19th century novels. Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters. Jane Eyre was one of my favorites because it had equal parts romance and mystery, just like Dance of Shadows. If you were directing the film version of Dance of Shadows, who would you cast in a few of the main roles? I’d love to see Emma Stone as Vanessa. Zep is hard . . . maybe Taylor Kitsch? And Chace Crawford as Justin? What’s next? I’m working on the sequel to Dance of Shadows, which I’m really excited about. I actually think it’s even better than the first. It has a lot of surprises, and an amazing scene at the end that I cannot wait to write.

The Story of Vampire Blood Author’s Revised Edition by Kathryn Meyer Griffith A rerelease of my 1991 Zebra paperback romantic vampire novel Damnation Books Buy Link All Kathryn Meyer Griffith’s Books available at Amazon.com help. What do I do next? I want to be one of the big dogs running in the big races. I want to make the big bucks. Be famous like you. (Ha, ha. I was so naïve in those days!)

In 1990 or so I’d just got done releasing my first three paperback novels with Leisure Books, a romantic historical (The Heart of the Rose 1985) and two romantic horror books (Evil Stalks the Night, 1984 and Blood Forge, 1989), and because I wasn’t making much money on them, was looking, as most so-called restless young authors were doing, to move up in the publishing industry. So I wrote snail mail letters to three established authors of the day – Dean Koontz, Stephen King and Peter Straub – asking for a little advice and a little

Well, Stephen King and Peter Straub never answered my letters but one rainy fall night I got a phone call from Gerda Koontz (Dean Koontz’s wife) and she said Dean had gotten my letter and wanted me to have a name of a brand new agent who I should call or write to and say I was recommended by him. If I thought it strange that Dean Koontz himself wasn’t actually talking to me I was told by Gerda that he was a shy man and had had a particularly hard couple of months because of family problems (I think it had something to do with his father in a nursing home or something, but can’t exactly recall now) and he’d asked her to call me. She often did that for him, as well as helping him with the business side of his writing career. He (through her…and I got the impression that he was actually nearby telling her what to say the whole time) said I had to have an agent (I didn’t have one) and then he gave me the name of an ambitious one, Lori Perkins, just starting out and his advice on what I should do to advance as a writer. I do remember being incredibly touched that he, a famous busy novelist that I admired – I loved his Twilight Eyes – would take the time to talk to me, even through his wife. They were both so sweet and we talked for

Read 2 Review nearly an hour all about writing, books and everything. I took their advice and contacted that agent and she agreed immediately to represent me on my fourth book, Vampire Blood, no doubt, because I said Dean Koontz had recommended her to me. Name dropper! But Vampire Blood was the reason I’d contacted those famous authors in the first place. I thought it was the best book I’d done so far and wanted it to go to (what I thought at the time) would be a better publisher than Leisure Books, which contracted and hog-tied their writers with a horrible ‘potboiler’ one-size-fits-all ten year contract with low advances and 4% royalties. Yes, I got a whole whopping 14 cents a book in those days, but, I must confess, they did print thousands of paperbacks each run and had a huge distribution area. I thought I could do a lot better. Anyway, Lori Perkins wanted me to send her the book and she did like it and eventually sold it, and then three others zip-zip-zip right after, to Zebra Books (now known more as Kensington Publishing) at 6% royalties and double the advances I was used to getting. They slapped a sexy blond vampire with a low dress on the cover and a hazy theater behind her. Lovely colors. I thought it was an eye-catching cover. I was so happy. I thought I’d made it! Again, so naïve. Vampire Blood. A little story about a family of vicious killing vampires who settle in a small Florida town called Summer Haven and end up buying and fixing up an old theater palace to run, and pluck their victims from, and a divorced, down-on-her-luck exnovelist and her worn-out father, who along with friends, help thwart them. Now to how and why I wrote it. My husband and I lived in this small Illinois town, Cahokia, at the time and there was the neatest little hole-in-the-

wall theater in a nearby shopping center we used to go to all the time…run by a family of a sweet man, Terry, and his wife, Ann, and sometimes their three children, two teenage boys and a girl named Irene. Such a friendly, but odd couple. The run-down theater was their whole world it seemed. The kids helped take in the tickets, pop the popcorn and sell the candy snacks. Now the minute Terry and Ann found out, in one of our earliest conversations, that I was a published novelist they were my greatest fans. Terry went right out and bought all three of my books and they all read them. Terry always thought they’d make great movies. Next time my husband and I went to the little theater Terry and Ann greeted us like old friends, so delighted to see us, and refused to take a dime from us for anything. We got in free whenever we went from then on. Now in those days my husband, my son, James, and I were pretty broke. I worked as a graphic designer at a big brokerage firm in downtown St. Louis (across the Poplar Bridge from our Illinois town) but my husband was in between jobs. We lived on a shoestring. Hard times. So I always was so tickled that we could get into the local movies for free. We went a lot, too, as we loved movies, especially science fiction and horror films. One night I was watching Terry and Ann and their joy in running that little theater, with the kids bustling around doing their jobs, and I got the idea for Vampire Blood. Just like that! Use them and the theater as a backdrop for a vampire novel. Hey, wouldn’t it be neat, I off-handedly mentioned to Terry one night, if I wrote a book about a family of vampires that was trying to pass as a real human family, the man and woman wanting so badly to fit in

Read 2 Review and lead a normal life for a while, renovating and then running a theater together…but the kids are wild and, as kids always do, make trouble for them in the town…killing people? Terry loved the idea and I asked him if it’d be all right to use him and his family as a template for the vampires. He was thrilled to be part of anything to do with my books and said yes. So…I wrote this book about them (sort of), the theater (making it much grander than it was, of course), a small town terrorized by cruel, powerful vampires who can change into wolves at will….and a saddened lonely woman, her brother, and her ex-husband (who she still loves and ultimately ends up with again after he saves her life) who finds herself again, but loses a lot, as well, fighting these vampires. Vampires she doesn’t believe in at first. I was very happy with the book when it was done and dedicated it to Terry and Ann when it came out in 1991. Terry and Ann were thrilled, too. So Vampire Blood came out and did very well for me, second only to my Zebra 1993 Witches. As the years went by it went out of print and when, twenty years later, Kim Richards at Damnation Books contracted my 13th and 14th novels, BEFORE THE END: A Time of Demons and The Woman in Crimson, she asked if I’d like to rerelease (with new covers and rewritten, of course) my 7 out-of-print Leisure and Zebra paperbacks – and I said a resounding yes! So…here it is…Vampire Blood…twenty years later, alive again and better, I believe, than the original because my writing then was done on an electric typewriter, with gobs of White-Out and carbon paper (I couldn’t afford copies), using snail mail; all of which didn’t lend itself to much rewriting. And in those days, editors told an author what

to change and then the writer only saw the manuscript once to final proof it. Who knew what those sneaky editors were slipping in inbetween and before the final book was in an author’s greedy little hands. Hey, and I was working full time, raising a son, living a life and caring for my big extended family in one way or another, too. Busy, exciting, loving, happy and sad times. For this new version, Damnation Book’s cover artist Dawné Dominique made me an astonishingly intriguing cover of a lovely vampire (Irene the youngest vampire who turns out to be the most brutal and ancient in the end)…but, thank goodness, without the low sexy top. And my DB editor, April Duncan, helped me make it a better novel. A lot has happened to me and my family in these twenty years, as well. Both my parents, and my beloved maternal grandmother, the storyteller of her generation, have since passed away. Many people we used to know have. Old boyfriends, old friends and relatives. I miss them all! I no longer have that agent; she went on to bigger advances and bigger writers. I lost my good job at the brokerage firm, bumped around in lesser jobs for years, always writing in my spare time, and now, at long last, write full time while my husband works way too hard in a machine shop to support us. Rewriting the book brought back so many good memories…and tears over those no longer here. The theater closed sixteen years ago, the owner believing it’d served its purpose and used up its time. Terry and Ann, heartbroken, were never the same. They had other jobs, none they truly cared about. Ann is still with us, but Terry died a few years ago, I heard from someone. We lost contact once they stopped running the theater and

Days of high hopes and far distance future dreams…some of which have come true and some which haven’t. I’ve never made the big bucks, never gotten truly famous, but now, at long last and to my great delight, all twelve of my older books, from Leisure, Zebra, and The Wild Rose Press are being rewritten and reissued from Damnation Books and Eternal Press between June 2010 and June 2012. Better than ever after I’d rewritten them. I have plans to write more books and short stories, too, when they’re done. Most importantly, I’m living a good life with a husband I adore and brothers and sisters I love. Writing the stories I was born to write and happy I am. I have my memories. All in all, I’m a lucky, lucky woman. So, all you writers out there…never give up and never stop writing! Thank you! A short story romance meets doomsday tale by Marian Lanouette! Review by Kate (Read 2 Review) As The World Ends comes out in December 2012 and I have to say if you don’t get a copy you are missing out on a simply brilliant story. Without giving too many spoilers the story is set around escaping doomsday, as the title may suggest. The main characters Lauren and husband Rob pack up and head into the mountains where they meet Roan who is also seeking shelter. Roan sets his eyes on Lauren and won't stop until he has her.

character of Lauren, wanting to leave but needing to pack make-up, I would probably be exactly like her. The male characters were very well developed, Rob‌. DAMN! I love the way Marian writes and this novella has made me want to read her other work. I highly recommend this story for all who enjoy a good romance and escapist story. I give AS THE WORLD ENDS 5/5

The pacing in the story is fantastic. There is enough detail to really pull you into the story and the action which made the pages flow by. I really liked the http://read2review.com/

The Seven Point Eight Chronicles ‘The Truth Will Set You Free’ Be prepared for a journey, an expedition that draws together fringe science, psychic powers, alternate dimensions, time travel, past lives, miracles, folklore, consciousness, ancient wisdom, conspiracy and nostalgia, in a soap opera for the soul. Welcome to the new paranormal/science fiction series entitled ‘Seven Point Eight’. Crossing genres and gender appeal, it blends character driven plot with an intriguing story line, full of geeky science underpinning a thrilling and clever plot. Written in the style of a TV series, ‘Seven Point Eight’ interweaves the

human dramas of love, betrayal, bitterness and above all, courage in a world where everyone must face their own dark shadow. Plus, it asks some pretty existential questions regarding the meaning of our lives and destiny, our karma and dharma, and last but not least, God and the universe.

‘Out of Body to Out of Universe’ ‘Seven Point Eight: The First Chronicle’ lays the groundwork, and sweeps through the 40s, 50s and 60s to modern day in a wild nostalgic, scientific, paranormal ride. It’s a twist of sci-fi confusion that asks some interesting questions. If you had special abilities to travel out of body, what would you do with them? Where would you go?

http://read2review.com/

He devises a project and builds a team to stretch the frontiers of exploration, only to make a realityshattering discovery... This series is for fans of science fiction, fantasy, the paranormal, big sweeping epics, metaphysics, 'Lost', 'Fringe', ‘Touch’, visionary fiction, conspiracy, ancient knowledge and technology, time travel and past lives.

Read 2 Review Seven Point Eight: The Second Chronicle Prologue to Odyssey The Ambush The pug-faced Bedford van wove its way through the country lanes, spraying rain and mud as it trudged up the hills. It rocked from side to side on the way back down, projecting an air of innocence early that Saturday morning. A typical feeling of laziness filled the damp air, with country dwellers tucked under their blankets for a well deserved lie in, birds tweeting in the autumnal trees, and the odd farmer preparing his fields after the harvest. The Bedford van disturbed few people. Once it had been powder blue in colour with a distinctive stripe down the side, now it was a flat, olive green, forming a synergy with the landscape. It had quite a full payload; several men in khakis, armed with rifles. There were two up at the front wearing neutral civilian clothes; the driver and unit leader, Hodges. A gruff man, he had a wild crop of mousy hair, a moustache and mutton chop sideburns. The van passed a bronze Ford Cortina on the lane, driven by a man with unruly fair hair and sideburns. He gave a friendly salute as he pulled in to let them past. “That’s the husband going to the village shops, on schedule,” Hodges confirmed. Adrenaline and determination pervaded the van, underpinning the cool and collected demeanour of the team, this reflective silence punctuated infrequently by relevant communication, “The ridge just up ahead should give us the ideal vantage point.” The driver nodded and pulled over into a lay-by. “Wait at the rendezvous,” Hodges directed, as he got out and slammed the passenger door shut.

The other men spilled out of the sliding door on the side, tested their radios, then Hodges gestured for them to move. They knew the plan, and the stakes. He slung a rifle on his shoulder, while the driver exited the scene with discretion. The unit now split into pairs, each heading off to different points around the ridge. When they reached the top, they positioned themselves on their stomachs and set up for a clear shot. Hodges fixed his jaw with a steely resolve and peered through the sight on his rifle. “Bitch is going down this time,” he muttered. Like the other snipers, he watched the scene below the ridge unfold. A picture postcard cottage nestled between two barns and surveyed an expanse of fields, many already harvested. Its courtyard entertained a host of chickens pecking at random, while a goat chewed nonchalantly, tethered to a gate post. Adjacent to the house, rows of proud runner beans entwined around canes, cabbages sat stoutly, and carrots soaked up the rays of impending autumn. A woman tended to these vegetables, appearing relaxed in her surroundings while a little girl exited the cottage, carrying a basket of apples. She had blonde, curly hair and wore a corduroy pinafore, with a roll neck knit underneath and tights to cover her legs. The sight of his rifle homed in on the girl. Outside the cottage, the woman watered her vegetable plot, admiring their progress and inspecting for pests. A chocolate brown Labrador ran through the open door and joined the little girl, wagging his tail, and she responded by stroking his head. Her

Read 2 Review mother acknowledged the sweetness of the scene with a smile. The radio blared out from the kitchen, playing TRex’s ‘Get It On’ and the mother moved her body in a surreptitious dance, singing along under her breath. “I’m going to feed the horsies,” the little girl said. “That’s okay, sweetheart, don’t forget to approach them carefully from the front.” She eyed her daughter discreetly as the little girl opened the gate to the first field. The horses were grazing in the far corner and she made her way over to them, cautious of startling them as she didn’t want to receive a hefty kick. When she reached them, she stroked their noses and they each received an apple, taking them greedily. All the time, her mother remained aware of her daughter’s movements as she picked runner beans, while the dog waited patiently at the gate, a silent guardian. Then unexpectedly, it barked, causing the mother to pause. Something upset the horses and the little girl touched the top of her arm, finding a dart stuck in her skin. She screamed. Whatever it was, it made her disorientated; everything started to spin and a moment later, she collapsed to the ground. The dog began to scratch at the gate, trying to jump it in frustration. Hearing the scream, her mother froze. A wave of nausea gripped her stomach as she became confronted with every parent’s worst nightmare…a nightmare from the past that had returned to haunt her. Instinctively, she vaulted the gate and spurred by panic, she ran towards her daughter, hoping to find her breathing. As she sprinted across the damp grass, she became aware of a sharp pain in her neck, as if a mosquito had just bitten her. However, she ignored it and knelt by her daughter, her priority.

“Come on, come on,” she whispered in desperation, “wake up!” This couldn’t be happening. The stalkers had quit, tired of the relentless chase, that cat and mouse where the rodent had always been left unscathed, while the predator had cursed his luck and licked his wounds again and again. Her family had just become settled, laid new plans, looked to a future free from fear, but that was just a mere fantasy now. “Please wake up!” She laid her head on her daughter’s chest, relieved to discover she was still breathing, but her little girl didn’t regain consciousness. Another sting, this time in her upper arm, reminded her of the danger that lurked. Not again, please, no more running, no more fighting... Closing her eyes, she understood what she needed to do, but nothing happened. This couldn’t be. She sensed an adjustment in her awareness, like someone had changed the channel on TV without asking her. Her grasp of the everyday world began to blur around the edges, it felt distant, a mere projection on an antique screen. Something was wrong, the game had changed. A sense of vulnerability washed over her, along with a realisation that they were sitting ducks. To be kidnapped by these people was a fate worse than death. No one could hurt you when you were dead. No one could assault your body, torment your mind, or destroy your faith when you were dead. No one could get you to do their bidding when you were dead. Gazing back towards the cottage, she prayed that her husband would return, but there was no sign of the car pulling up. “Come on, come on,” she muttered. Nothing. No engine in ear shot. There was only one thing to do. Her

Read 2 Review eyes focused on the house, then the horses and beyond… She lifted her daughter up onto one of the horses and hauled herself up, settling for the lack of saddle. Gripping with her thighs the best she could, she gave it a kick and looked ahead, her escape route sighted in the distance. I can do this, she told herself. All she had to do was reach the neighbour’s house, a sanctuary until her husband returned. What was taking so long? Something stuck in her thigh, and she glanced down to find a dart, identical to the one in her daughter’s arm. A woozy sensation began to filter around her body and it became harder to grip the horse securely. She didn’t know what poison seeped through her veins, but felt determined that it wouldn’t be her undoing. Despite the ever increasing difficulties, she gave the horse a kick. Their neighbour’s house lay beyond the next field, if she could just hang on… Back up on the ridge, Smith, the right hand man spat vehemently. “Shit! She’s not going down!” “She’s scared this time,” Hodges interjected, licking his lips, “that’s why she’s running. Hit her again. I’ll take the horse out.” He raised his rifle once more, aimed at the fast moving target and fired, in synchronicity with another shot from further along the ridge. Smith released his shot, equally eager to subdue their prey. “We’re going to lose her behind those trees.” Down in the field, the mother clung on for dear life, darts attacking like bee stings. She swore at least one

hit the horse. All she had to do was hang on a few more minutes… “Come on!” she urged, hoping the horse had more to give. Everything began to blur and spin. The horse began to stumble. One final dart to the arm and her grip loosened, muscles unresponsive. She lost control and fell, hitting the ground heavily. The horse staggered and as blackness began to envelope her, she saw it collapse, her daughter falling helplessly to the ground. With the toxin racing through her bloodstream, paralysing her muscles and taking her body hostage, at that moment, she didn’t know if she’d live or die. Is this it? Is this the end? Or just the beginning? As the darkness claimed her, it not only possessed her consciousness, it took her hope, her heart and her very soul. On the ridge, Hodges threw his rifle down. “Finally! Three fucking years I’ve been after this bitch!” He barked into his radio. “We need a quick extraction, targets are in the fields!” He led his unit down the ridge, face ablaze with a glory that he could finally taste. Everything came to those who waited, and the contractor would be immensely satisfied with the delivery.
