AUGUST 2016

Editorial Margot Robbie first came to my attention in the Martin Scorsese 2013 comedy-drama The Wolf of Wall Street, in which she played opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Both actors gave excellent performances. Miss Robbie, born in Queensland, Australia, appeared in a number of television shows and films before this breakthrough performance including a spell on the Aussie soap Neighbours - but The Wolf of Wall Street really put her on the map. Last month she starred in the under-rated adventure film The Legend of Tarzan and this month plays a prominent role - that of super villain Harley Quinn (see front cover) - in the anticipated fun action flick Suicide Squad. What strikes me about these two films is that Robbie is playing such different characters. I guess that’s what you call “acting”, and one shouldn’t be surprised by actors inhabiting different roles. But I, nevertheless, think it’s impressive. Margot Robbie is something of a box-office draw at the moment and she’s a fine actor too. I look forward to seeing the characters she introduces us to in the future. MvL

Due to poor box office Ascendant, the last part of the Divergent series of teenage sci-fi movies (due for UK release on 9th June 2017), has been downgraded to a TV movie (with an accompanying television series).

Originally slated for an August 2016 release, the sequel to the 2012 teen comedy Project X - named Project XX - has not emerged and is still thought to be in development.

Comic-Con took place in San Diego between 19th-23rd July 2016. It was a very busy event, with lots of panels, presentations, and exhibits. I’ve never been myself, but I’m sure it must have been great for those people lucky enough to be able to attend. I am glad to be able to report, however, that some pretty cool trailers were released during the event; many of these subsequently being made available for a wider viewership online (e.g. on Youtube). There was, for example, a new trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, plus a whole clutch of juicy trailers unveiled by Warner Bros. - including one for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Perhaps most notably, we got a first look at King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Justice League, Kong: Skull Island, and Wonder Woman. I thought some of these were really awesome videos.
