t’s 10pm. There’s a small tent in a festival somewhere. It’s dark, a bit cold; the crowd are fine, it’s a fairly standard show, nothing exceptional. But Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes feel fucking alive.

This is a defining moment, one where the impostor syndrome that plagues everyone - even one of the British rock scene’s most commanding frontmen – dies. Frank Carter was born to play music, and on that stage, in the middle of the night, he knew it. “We just were so hyped,” he remembers. “We just played without any nerves, no worries. Something happened that day - we just really understood each other, we locked it in, and I felt such elation and happiness being on that stage at that moment that I really took stock of everything that I had. “I felt incredibly lucky to be still playing music for a living. Now, I’m sat 30 storeys up in an apartment building in Melbourne. I’m looking out at the sunset, I’ve just played four shows here, every one of them has sold out. “I’m 33-years-old. I’ve been doing this for a long, long time, and I just feel really lucky. I have a new appreciation and a new respect for music and

6

the industry and our fans that I just couldn’t have had when I was young because I was young. “It’s the kind of respect and appreciation that only comes with experience and loss, with losing all of that. I know what I have to lose now, and so I’m working as hard as I can to make this band be the greatest thing it can be - I believe that we can step into that role as being a really important British rock band.” “I want to give people what bands like the Deftones and At The Drive-In gave me at these festivals,” he explains. “I struggled to get into those tents and what I saw was life changing. I know that sounds a bit much, I’m not saying I’m going to be life changing for anyone, but I want to be. “I don’t want to just play songs. I want to go out, perform and I want people to feel something. Even if they fucking hate me and want to bash my fucking face in, that to me is better than them feeling nothing,” he offers with a grin. “I just want to make people feel something. Anything.” The Rattlesnakes’ first album ‘Blossom’ was created with a vengeance. Burning with the need to make something, the record is vicious, vitriolic but full of a swagger and personality that sets it free as a band in their own right. ‘Modern Ruin’ was made in its immediate aftermath, with more time to consider the full potential of the band, pushing them in ways they had never considered.

“I BELIEVE THAT WE

Albums such as these are the ones that go beyond the casual car ride soundtracks and seep beneath the skin, they crack open the potential of a band’s capability, or – catch you at the right moment – the potential of music itself. Your whole relationship with music can shift, just like that.

REALLY IMPORTANT

CAN BE A

BRITISH ROCK BAND.”

“One of the first records that I ever

listened to that changed the way I felt was ‘Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence’ by Glassjaw,” explains Frank. “Ross Robinson did an amazing job with the way it was

8

recorded. He was trying to find a new space for himself in music anyway, and that was the right band to do it with. It was just everything about that record, the lyrics, the song structure, the playing and the way it sounded was so unbelievably refreshing and punk rock for me that it just blew my mind wide open and it made me realise that you could do things very differently. “It sounds like a Nick Cave record; it sounds like a Birthday Party record. It’s so violent and fast, but then incredibly considered and well orchestrated and raw. It is fucking one of the rawest records out there. I think at the time we heard so much overproduced music… that’s what’s happening now, actually. There are a lot of bands playing rock music where they’ve found a niche that they can sit in quite happily and they can look the part, and they can fucking write the same songs, and they can leech off of their fanbase, and I think they’re parasites. I don’t think that’s art; I think it’s just phoning it in. What I always wanted to do was make records that were complicated and challenging; I never, ever wanted to make the same record twice, and I don’t think I’ve done that yet.” That’s somewhat of an understatement, but with each album, Frank comes back with a renewed challenge – one not to settle, to push on and once he’s found a new place to create, push it that inch or two further. ‘Modern Ruin’ is, in his opinion, his defining album. You could hand it to someone and they would know Frank Carter in essence, but will never be able to pin him down to one definable sound.

More than just new territory, with the Rattlesnakes’ new offering he looks at himself, at you, at people all over. “The album is all about human relationships,” he says. “It’s all about how we interact with each other and the positive and negative effects that this can have on us, and the domino effect on other people. It’s essentially about a character who is struggling and having a hard time finding their place in the world; they’re in a relationship that they are trying to sabotage and at the same time they are living in a world that is kind of doing the same thing. So, there are a lot of parallels with their behaviour and the behaviour of strangers out in the world, in the war that we’re living. An overview of the record is really that relationships are a battlefield, and we’re all just trying not to die.” Battlefields are found everywhere, and Frank knows that he’s lucky to have his shot again with the Rattlesnakes, and with that renewed fire, he’s going nowhere. “I just want to say thank you to anybody who’s bought a record, streamed our album, come to a show - anybody who thinks that my music is important to them,” he says. “Thank you, because you’ve given me a life that I’ve always wanted, and I never knew how important it was to me until now. “So I just really appreciate the fact that I’ve been given a third chance at this, and I promise you, I will not fuck this one up.” P Reading & Leeds will take place from 25th-27th August.

new batch of acts including the final headliner - have been added to the bill for this year’s Reading & Leeds.

Eminem joins Kasabian and Muse as bill-toppers for 2017. He’s one of 76 new additions for August’s line-up. Elsewhere Haim make good on last year’s drop out, alongside Charli XCX, Blossoms, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Sundara Karma, Moose Blood, Fickle Friends, INHEAVEN, Toothless, King Nun and loads more.

EMINEM IS HEADLINING Yep, he’s back. If Eminem is going to headline any UK festival, it’s gonna be Reading & Leeds. Our Marshall is no stranger to the summer extravaganza - this will be the third time he’s topped the bill, with his previous appearances coming in 2001 and 2013.

There’s also room for Everything Everything, IDLES, Mallory Knox, Marmozets, Migos, Oh Wonder, Puppy, The Amazons, Ray Blk and You Me At Six.

SUNDARA KARMA RETURN AS HOME TOWN HEROES

That’s all in addition to the already announced Major Lazer, Bastille, Two Door Cinema Club, Glass Animals, Circa Waves, Rat Boy, Flume, Jimmy Eat World and a whole bunch more. Reading & Leeds takes place from 25th - 27th August at Richfield Avenue, Reading and Bramham Park, Leeds.

AFTER PULLING OUT OF LAST YEAR’S FESTIVAL TO FINISH THEIR MUCH ANTICIPATED SECOND ALBUM, HAIM ARE BACK!

CHARLI XCX IS LOOKING FOR THE AFTERPARTY ‘Pop’ acts don’t generally play Reading & Leeds, but then Charli isn’t your standard anything. Last time ‘round, she crushed it. This will be no different.

Last year’s Main Stage slot was a triumphant hometown moment for Reading’s Sundara Karma. Now their album is ‘out there’, they’re coming back again for a second round, keeping things local.

Haim were at the top of last year’s Reading & Leeds ‘must see’ list, before they pulled out. The trio’s second album makes the phrase ‘much anticipated’ feel almost redundant, so we’re willing to forgive them for dropping off 2016’s bill to finish it off. This time ‘round, though, they’re going to have to deliver. Thankfully, there’s probably no band better suited to a steaming Bank Holiday weekend in the sun. Hopefully by then there’ll be new material out there to take the party to a whole new level. 11

DORK PRESENTS... WE’RE HEADING TO THIS YEAR’S LEEFEST PRESENTS: THE NEVERLAND, AND THIS IS WHO WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING.

CATHOLIC ACTION

T

his year Dork’s teaming up with Leefest Presents: The Neverland as a fancy pants “media partner”, bringing you all the gossip and happenings you could possibly wish for. Today marks the event’s first line up announce, featuring some of our fave up-and-coming bands: Fickle Friends (pictured), Bad Sounds, Fish, Shame, Catholic Action and Kagoule. Also on the bill are headliners Jake Bugg and Annie Mac, very special guests Wild Beasts (pictured) and a

Jungle Presents DJ set, alongside Tom Greenan, Hannah Peel, Keston Cobblers Club, Strong Asian Mothers, The Bay Rays, Superglu, Childcare, Ider, Weirdo + Co, Bokito and more. Leefest Presents: The Neverland also has three distinct ‘realms’ on site: The Neverwoods (arts and crafts, the ambient forest and a kids activity camp); Mermaids Lagoon (beach parties, tiki bar and hot tubs); and Skull Ridge (burlesque, cabaret and circus). It will take place in Tunbridge Wells from 10th-12th August. Tickets are on sale now for just £99 (plus fees); visit leefest.org for more information.

Glasgow art-pop is a sub-niche that’s consistently smashed it out of the park. Catholic Action are happy to keep that lineage going.

FICKLE FRIENDS

If there are more prolific producers of pop-tinged bangers than Fickle Friends, we’re yet to identify them. The ultimate party band, we’re bringing the poppers.

BAD SOUNDS

With a massively high bar for singles that blow our tiny minds, Bad Sounds are set to go stratospheric this summer. GET TICKETS AT LEEFEST.ORG

LOVE IS AN OCEAN SPECIFICALLY FRANK, WHO IS HEADLINING PARKLIFE AND LOVEBOX THIS SUMMER.

L

et’s be honest, quite a lot of the bands headlining festivals in 2017 are old hands. We’ve seen them before. We know they can do a job. It doesn’t mean they’re not exciting, but they’re certainly not a risk. Then again, booking Frank bloody Ocean to top the bill at your event is hardly playing it fast and loose, either. With one of last year’s most buzz-worthy albums in the bag, there’s no doubting our Frank is a pull - heck, we were all happy enough to watching him doing some carpentry for the better part of a week. But he’s definitely an exciting one. That’s why news he’s headlining Parklife and Lovebox this summer has pulses raised. Parklife takes place in Manchester from 10th -11th June, with Lovebox in London from 14th-15th July.

WIN TICKETS TO PARKLIFE If you think Frank Ocean is exciting, that’s not all Manchester’s Parklife has to offer. There’s The 1975, A Tribe Called Quest, George Ezra, Two Door Cinema Club, London Grammar and loads more. If you fancy a weekend to remember, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away for this year’s event - which takes place from 10th-11th June 2017. To enter, visit readdork. com/parklife2017comp and follow the instructions. It’s super simple, honest. If you don’t want to leave it to chance, you can grab tickets now at parklife.uk.com.

PLAYING READING & LEEDS’ MAIN STAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS HUGE FOR US.... It was a big step up into the realms of important bands who have played over the years - hard for us to comprehend that we were getting to be a part of its story. It had taken us a few years to get there, so we totally grabbed the opportunity with both hands and played like our lives depended on it. We felt like we had earned it. It was so worth the wait.

It was the first festival we had ever played and so to return for the fourth time as headliners was a real watershed moment for us as a band, but also as men. TWIN ATLANTIC ARE HEADLINING THIS YEAR’S HANDMADE FESTIVAL IN LEICESTER

HEADLINING THE NME STAGE AT T IN THE PARK WAS ICONIC. A MILESTONE. As a teenager, I had watched Kasabian, Nine Inch Nails or the Prodigy massive, massive credible bands - all headline that stage. Walking onto an outdoor stage at night after nearly ten years of songwriting recording and touring… interviews, music videos, festival after festival - that was a crazy moment. We stopped to let what we were achieving sink in, but at the same time, it made us realise that we are maybe capable of even more. It was definitely a show that gave us so much confidence to go on and make an album like ‘GLA’ just a few months after. Having tens of thousands of people turn out and give you all that love and attention will do that in the end! Ha!

HERE’S A FEW OTHER ACTS

On the Main Stage in the summer, when back home was winter. Being so far from home and having people know our music totally refreshed our band. It was the same story for our first shows in South Africa - we played Oppikopi Festival and didn’t know a thing about any fanbase we had there... we were greeted with a few thousand people who knew every word to nearly every song we played. It was as surreal as it was humbling. To know a song you wrote at home, in Scotland, or on tour and then experiencing life to the maximum extremes resonating with people so far from what we ever thought we could achieve. Another moment that breathed a welcome burst of inspiration into the future outlook of our band.

hey’re back. Arcade Fire are on the road to a new album, and they’re set to hit our shores this summer to show us what they’ve been up to.

Well - we say our shores, and they do have a mainland Manchester date planned - but we really mean the Isle of Wight Festival, where the band will headline from 8th-11th June. They’re also set to play a bunch of European festivals while they’re over, including Belsonic, Best Kept Secret, INmusic, Roskilde and Rock Werchter. Hopefully by June they’ll have dropped some new material to get us even more hyped - we’re certainly expecting that to be the case - but with a back catalogue like theirs, there are few better headliners to catch in 2017.

WIN TICKETS TO ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL 2017 Isle of Wight Festival is known for its eclectic bill, and 2017 is no different. So you’ve been announced as headliners for Live At Leeds, what else is on your radar? Tom Fleming: We’ve got loads coming up, but I’m a bit out of the loop as to what’s announced and what isn’t. For Live At Leeds, I guess you could say we’re alumni of the Leeds music scene. All four of us are actually from a small town, but it’s definitely a great place for us to go. It’s great to see smaller festivals doing so well. It’s a funny cycle because there was a time not that many years ago when loads of festivals opened but then they all seemed to close again, and now we’ve got a new cycle of festivals. It seems like they’re thriving. It’s always difficult for me because I’m so involved, it’s hard to judge where it’s at in that regard, you know what I mean? People want the new thing, and they do change quickly - these days things move quicker. People don’t wait around for records anymore. People seem to like change constantly. Festivals are pretty much an expectation for the summer months, though. This is it, they’re expensive, and it’s essentially a holiday. A holiday to go and listen to some cool stuff and have a good time, and that’s okay, everyone’s allowed to do that there’s no guilt involved - you’re allowed to be a music fan and care about everything else Not enough people in the UK consider European festivals, too. The UK is a little bit of a micro climate in a lot of ways; you always have

bands who are big in the UK but aren’t big anywhere else - British bands, I mean. For American acts - like, thinking back to The Strokes and Future Islands - it was always the UK first and everyone else following suit. We’ll play in Poland, for example, and a band will be on their fifth record and the biggest band in Poland, and they’re from Essex - you know, I’ve never heard of ‘em. The world’s a big place, and we’re very fortunate that we get to travel a lot and you get constant reminders that the UK’s not the world and it’s not the same everywhere. You’ve got take that kind of devotion seriously as well - if all these people are into it, you have to take note of that.

a solid roof over your head, you get paid. It’s very different going in as a performer, and it is a lot of fun because you get to see loads of cool bands and also you see all your friends, people you don’t get to see because you’re always on fucking tour. You have to remind yourself to not take things for granted, if you have an audience at a festival, whatever you may be doing.

What’s the reception like for Wild Beasts in Europe, compared to the UK? It’s very hard to gauge where you do well until you actually go there. We do really well in Portugal, in Turkey, in Mexico, in Spain... I think there’s a language barrier in some places. It varies a hell of a lot by country, and festivals can be very different from one another as well - they can be like huge corporate sponsored things or they can be run by anarchists on reclaimed land, they’re all on the circuit.

What have been some of your highlights? The obvious one that springs to mind is Primavera, playing the amphitheatre by the sea. That was 2011 or 12, that was really awesome. We headlined Field Day that year as well, which was a really huge show for us at the time, and there’s also one in Switzerland which is really amazing, pretty small but it’s really really gorgeous. I’ve been in this band pushing ten years and the amount of festivals that we’ve played... some don’t exist anymore, some we’re playing for the first time, there’s just so many! So many people as well, you need to remember that they’ve come to see shows. At any one festival, you’re playing shows bigger than you warrant on your own, pretty much whoever you are, unless you are literally the headliner.

It’s a whole other world of festivals. Absolutely, there are some really good ones out there, and ones I would never have heard of unless I was playing them. When I was younger I pretty much never went to a festival, only club shows. I guess being in a band has kind of ruined festivals for me because you’re on the other side of the fence, you’ve got showers, you’ve got

Festival crowds must be entirely different from your own shows? It’s an amazing thing to have all those people. Obviously, you do set yourself up for a battle because when you’re playing your own headline shows people come deliberately to see you. You still want to be the best you can be, but you know they’ll stay with you - whereas at festivals you’ve got

it when frankly shit hits the fan.

to shout, bang bang, bang bang, look at us, this is good. It’s just different, there will be people who come deliberately to see you but I think for most people you’ll be an extra and again, it’s expensive - people want to see the hits. Not that we have any hits, but people want it to be short and sharp and effective. That’s fine, I think a lot of bands forget that it’s a part of your job. What about mishaps? You must’ve had some of those. I remember last time we played Glastonbury there was an electrical storm which meant that all the stages had to be cleared, so the entire festival was shut down while this storm passed. I think it was Rudimental, this is how long ago

it was, who were on before us and they pretty much lost their whole set. They were on for something like ten minutes because they had to clear up the stage - you know, to avoid death. I mean, it was the right thing to do. On a much darker note, I remember we were booked to play Pukkelpop in Belgium - there was a horrible stage collapse, and a couple of people died. We were due to play the next day. That was really sad. It’s not really a funny story, but that is something that can happen. But mainly it’s like exploding equipment. I remember at a now-deceased festival - it was pretty enormous; I think Eminem was headlining or something stupid - we had two amps go through a song, it was amateur hour. I think every band goes through

It’s a rite of passage. I do think every band fails that test once and never does it again. That’s why people like live music because there’s always the high wire, an element of ‘You’re standing in front of me, can you do this?’ That’s why it’s fun and exciting and always going to be around. Whatever else happens, people are going to see people perform. I think if you handle it with charisma and grace, that’s the best you can hope for. If you have that attitude, you go out and just deal with it, then I think that’s even more impressive. Finally, your fantasy lineup? Oh, Christ. Well I mean it is a fantasy because of how many people are dead. Even just people who died last year - David Bowie, Prince, Motorhead, Van Halen. I’m going through a hair metal phase at the moment so I like Van Halen, Def Leppard. I remember taking my friends to see this metal band and they quite patiently stood, I came back to them after twenty minutes and they were still on the same chord. I’m not sure how realistic my putting on a festival would be, but you can guarantee it’d be worth the ticket price! P

It’s hard enough to get any opportunity to see him in the UK. ‘Carrie And Lowell’ is one of my favourite albums. I think I’d melt if I heard it live.

After careful deliberation, I honestly think they have been the best live band I have ever had the privilege to see and hear in the flesh. I’m a sucker for gang vocals, and PUP are a lollipop filled with them.

THE SMITHS If only for the bragging rights that I was able to get them back together. Mmmm…. Tasty bragging rights.

Bad Sounds don’t make Bad Sounds. They don’t even make Good Sounds. They make Amazing Bangers - though, as a name, that would sound like they were boasting. Listen to: ‘Wages’ Follow: @realbadsounds

THE BIG MOON I recently played a few shows with them and it would be remiss of me not to talk about them considering talking about them is currently my favourite pastime. I’d have them headline after The Smiths. And before. And an acoustic set.

SEAN PAUL Imagine a festival set of all of his tunes/features with a rolling cast performing with him. There is a strong chance that it would be a sign of the apocalypse, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take.

he 1975 and Mumford and Sons and Fleet Foxes have been announced for Latitude alongside third headliner, Fleet Foxes.

Mumfords won’t just be headlining, though, they’re bringing their Gentlemen Of The Road Stopover to the festival, curating the Saturday. “This collaboration with Latitude is one of the most exciting things we’re doing this year,” the band say. “Ever since we started working on Gentlemen Of The Road Stopovers we’ve really enjoyed curating line ups and sharing not only our own music but also sharing music of artists who we love and are listening to regularly. It’s almost like creating a mix tape with a best friend, but instead it’s a whole day of music, across multiple stages, with 40,000 people!” The real exciting booking, though, has to be The 1975, who will be playing the final show of their current album run when they top the bill on the Obelisk. By the time they return for album three, expect them to be in contention to headline the biggest festivals in the world - but if you’re looking for the perfect venue for their stunning live show, you won’t find much better than Latitude. Latitude will take place at Henham Park in Suffolk, from 13th-16th July - visit latitudefestival.com for more information and tickets. Hey, Tyler. You’re playing Download 2017! What can hardcore fans and newcomers to the band expect from your set? I’m super excited to play Download! It seems like every time we come back to the UK and Europe we come up on bigger and more exciting festivals. This time will be a blast for sure! Fans can bet on a bigger, more exciting Issues. We’ve got a bangon crew, and we’ve been figuring ourselves out more and more over the years, so I think we just have more confidence these days. follow us on Spotify, or pull up our videos on YouTube. We’ve done pretty well at winning over not only unfamiliar festival fans, but also lots of the parents that escort their kids to these gigs! Have you started thinking about set lists for festivals yet? Does the nature of the festival you’re playing influence your choices? We always think of the biggest and most energetic way to play a festival; it’s a lot of pressure making perfect set lists. A lot of the time we figure there will be a ton of people who won’t know us yet, so we try to focus on the songs we are pushing right now - but in this case, we reckon we’ll have loads of cult followers, so we’ll play the biggest singles; the likes of ‘Mad At Myself’, ‘Hooligans’ and ‘Coma’. We tend to go for a more windows-down, sun-up, high-energy and feel-good set with festivals. But with the more metal-driven fests, we will always make time for a beat-down and some

I think we are most excited to play in Italy [at In.Fest in Milan]. We’ve never been, but we do have some fan pages from Italy, and there’s been a bit of demand over the years from there, so that will be exciting. We’re always stoked to be back in the other European countries, too. The love always doubles on every

What festival survival tips do you have for fans? It depends on the weather, doesn’t it!? I suppose come rain, you better have your wellies on! Come shine, drink plenty of water! Either way, I think you should grab a small rucksack or a fanny pack to keep your money and other necessities safe. Also, I recommend buying any merch items that are white, or paper like posters, at the end of your visit, so you don’t destroy it or get it dirty! P

Listen Up! WITH ALBUM ONE OUT, SPRING KING ARE READY FOR ROUND TWO. WORDS: JESSICA GOODMAN.

30

I

n the time since the release of their debut album last summer, Spring King have gone from strength to strength. The band that introduced the beginning of Apple Music’s flagship radio station Beats 1 in 2015 have grown from underground heroes to a certified sensation, and it’s an excitement that shows no signs of fading. “People come to a Spring King show because they know that they can jump around and lose themselves and no one’s going to have a problem with that,” Tarek Musa describes. “I just see people having more and more fun at our shows.”

Spring King are set to play this year’s Are You Listening? festival in Reading. Raising money for Reading Mencap, the festival also plays host to The Big Moon, Bad Sounds, Shame, Kagoule, Tusks, Matt Maltease and loads more. Taking place on 22nd April, tickets are on sale now from areyoulistening.org.uk.

Sure enough, as the number of people who turn up to their performances has grown, so has the energy that floods these concerts. “When we play a show – nowadays especially, since the album’s come out – people sing along to every word,” the drummer marvels. “If it’s connecting with the fans, if people are jumping around at the shows, I’m very, very happy.” Indeed, there’s no place the band would rather be than celebrating the mutual adoration they share with their fans. “We try and give it everything we’ve got,” he enthuses, “even if it’s only 100 people, or 50 people.” Anyone who’s seen the group play would find such a statement impossible to refute. Whether performing in rammed venues, on festival stages, or to packed arenas, this is a band who always push themselves to their limits. “I nearly died!” Tarek exclaims, thinking back to a festival the group performed at two

years ago. “I was choking to death,” he depicts, “I was literally on my last couple of breaths. My mate had to give me the Heimlich manoeuvre.” Erupting into laughter as he explains this didn’t happen on stage but rather in the campsite while eating a 10p Chomp bar – “the cheapest way to die! Apparently, I sounded like a pterodactyl screaming,” he cracks – the musician describes the moment as “the one festival story that I’ll never forget in my life.” “I went and sat in my tent on my own for about five minutes playing melodica,” he chuckles. “I was just so grateful to be alive.” Near-death experiences aside, Spring King have always revelled in the festival experience. “I love it!” Tarek proclaims. “I’m a simple camper. I take a rucksack, and it has all my clothes in it. I probably leave quite smelly, but that’s fine by me for a couple of days.” When the sun is shining, there’s drink in hand, and music echoes through the air – what could be better? “I enjoy sitting with my mates in a field and just having a good time,” the frontman expresses. And who would argue? With performances at Are You Listening? and Tramlines already confirmed for the summer, the future’s certainly looking bright for the Manchester four-piece. But of course, there’s a lot more than festival appearances sitting in the band’s future. “We’ve already started writing for the second release,” Tarek reveals. “That’s our big plan. Just to try and write as many songs as we can and get recording.”

“We’ve already started writing for the second release.” While he admits “I don’t know what it’s going to be yet, whether it’s an album or an EP,” the initial spark of creativity is already burning bright. Boasting a combination of “pop melodies,” “distorted guitars,” and “aggression,” the new music they’re working on seems set to showcase Spring King at their most characteristic. They might be taking time out to write, due to the simple fact that “it’s really hard to write music in the van without hitting someone else with an acoustic guitar while they’re sat next to you,” but for this Manchester four-piece nothing beats the thrill of stepping out onto a stage in front of an audience raring to live it up. “Sometimes people get a bit selfconscious at shows – I used to be like that when I was younger,” Tarek portrays. “I still get nervous at every show.” Facing up to that fear makes their performances all the more thrilling. “I feel like we’ve now set the standards for our shows, which is that if you’re going to come,” he pauses. “Well, you don’t have to be up for it, but people in the pit don’t have to worry about losing themselves.” P

TAREK FROM SPRING KING’S FESTIVAL TIPS

ESTRONS:

“I’m really getting into Estrons. To be honest, I don’t know how long they’ve been around, but to me they’re new. I absolutely love them. I think they’ve got such a raw energy about them. I haven’t seen them live, but I can imagine what they’re like live. I feel like Estrons would be a good shout. “ GET INUIT:

“I have to say Get Inuit. We’ve played about thirty shows

GREEN MAN with them now. They’ve supported us at probably thirty shows. They’re incredible. Their lead singer, Jamie, is such a character on stage. He’s full of charisma. He’s a funny guy. He’s a funny guy. And their music’s great.” THE BIG MOON:

“I met The Big Moon because they wanted me to mix a song of theirs called ‘The Road’. I mixed that. Then I also recorded and produced the b-side for that single when it came out. After that, we stayed friends, and I got more and more acquainted with their music.” KAGOULE:

“Whenever we’ve been in Nottingham we’ve always partied with Kagoule. If we had a show, they’d always come to our show. We’d chat afterwards, and we always just got on really well.” RAT BOY:

“We’ve played with him in the past at festivals and stuff like that, and we always get on –slash- cause mayhem in each other’s dressing rooms. They’re nice guys.”

SURVIVING

WHAT TO BRING? As little as possible. The last thing you want is to be lugging around a bag with a load of shit you’re not even gonna need. Put your money in your sock, your phone in a tight pocket and go have fun. That way you’re not worried about losing stuff; and you can stage dive as much as you want!

WHAT TO WEAR? A warm hoodie or jumper, if it’s too hot you can tie it round your waist. Coincidentally we actually sell hoodies! Maybe you pop by our merch table? Maybe you buy one.....

TOP TIPS Stay hydrated, chances are it’s gonna be warm, and just being in a crowd can dehydrate you. If you’re gonna stage dive, make sure you give it the beans. I’m

talking front flips, salmon dives etc. No one likes a half hearted, limp stage dive. Also get to the stages early, particularly the smaller ones as they often reach capacity and you might miss the band you want to see.

FIVE MUST-NOT-MISS

YEAR’S SLAM DUNK?

ACTS?

The shows! Some of the funnest sets we’ve played, the rooms were at capacity and people went mad; it was a real highlight of the year for us. Also just getting to see so many friends over one weekend was great. Hopefully there’ll be more of the same this year.

Seaway: Go check out the boys, guaranteed a good time. Plus they need all the support they can get; so just humour them and put up with it. Trophy Eyes: Certified bangers. The new record is great, if you haven’t heard it then don’t sleep on it. Crime In Stereo: Because it’s Crime In Stereo. Enter Shikari: I’m really looking forward to hearing that record live again. One of the first club gigs I ever went to was Enter Shikari in Liverpool in 2006; so it’s gonna be a real nostalgia trip for me. It’s gonna be a great show.
