BUILDING BEDSIDE NURSING SKILL SEMINARS IV VENIPUNCTURE CERTIFICATION COURSES ZHEC-700-101 - Wednesday, October 5, 2011 ZHEC-700-300 - Tuesday, November 8, 2011 Time: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 This course offers a basic comprehensive program review of the anatomy and physiology of the venous system, vein identification, criteria for vein and device selection, equipment, complications, documentation, legal aspects and guidelines for infection control. Goal:

Provide the professional nurse with current knowledge in obtaining and maintaining peripheral venous access. Classroom competency will be obtained by completion of a test with a score of at least 80% and performance of a simulated peripheral IV insertion. Your employer is responsible for validating your bedside competency in performing a peripheral IV insertion in accordance with the institution/agency policies and procedures.

This course is intended for use by non-Spanish-speaking medical staff whether CNA, LPN, or RN, who wish to communicate directly with their Spanish-speaking patients. The goal of Spanish for Nursing is to prepare non-Spanish speaking nurses to use functional Spanish language skills to communicate professionally with Spanish-speaking patients and their families. BUILDING BEDSIDE NURSING SKILL SEMINARS PICC CERTIFICATION COURSE ZHEC-701-304 - Thursday, November 17, 2011 Time: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 There have been many advances and new technology in venous access. To keep pace with our demands for more sophisticated, long-term peripheral venous access devices, the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) was developed. Special nursing skills and knowledge are required for the safe insertion and management of patients with this type of device. This course is an educational basis with performance for those professionals who are very adept at peripheral access. Learning At the completion of the program, the learner Objectives: will be able to: • Describe the difference between central circulation, mid-clavicular and peripheral circulation in relationship to proper PICC tip location • Identify the three veins used for PICC insertion • Explain the appropriate site care and flushing technique in the management of PICC’s • Demonstrate the proper technique for PICC insertion Tuition:

PREHOSPITAL TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT COURSES This course is designed to be an intensive 16-hour experience with scenario-based skills. It is designed to provide the EMT, EMT-P, or the PHRN with a specific body of knowledge related to the prehospital assessment and care of the trauma patient. Topics included are kinematics of trauma, assessment and management, shock, head, spine, abdominal and thermal trauma, advanced airway management and special considerations in geriatrics and pediatrics. Successful completion will be based on written and practical skills.

Part 1 is interactive online cognitive learning, followed by Part 2 skills test with an AHA ACLS instructor at RACC. Working with neurosurgeons demonstrated the need for an advanced practice nurse to manage the non-surgical clients with pain issues.

EVENING SESSIONS TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY ZHEC-768-100 - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a form of acquired brain injury that occurs when there is a sudden traumatic episode to the head that disrupts normal function of the brain. This can lead to death or disability. This course will discuss the diagnosis and management, long-term outcomes and prevention of traumatic brain injury. Learning Upon completion of the course, the participant Objectives: should be able to: • Describe the Glascow Coma Scale and how it is used as an assessment tool for TBI patients.

ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY (ECT): SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION ZHEC-770-102 - Wednesday, October 5, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for certain mental health disorders. Unfortunately, it may be under-utilized in the psychiatric care setting. This is in part due to fear and misunderstanding about the ECT procedure. This course will provide the facts about ECT, including history, ECT medications, how ECT is performed and the potential benefits and adverse effects. • List 3 treatment options for TBI patients

• Name two psychiatric disorders that may be treated with ECT

McNicholas, MSN–CRNP Amanda is the Lead Advanced Practioner with the Trauma Services at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She obtained her BSN and MSN–CRNP from Temple University. Amanda has past experience in the emergency room, school nursing and teaching experience as well as her trauma experience. She was given an Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing Award at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

EVENING SESSIONS UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TEST RESULTS This course is designed for health care employees who wish to increase their understanding of clinical laboratory tests. The course will cover the rationale for tests that are ordered, the interpretation of lab results and the clinical significance in providing better patient care. Case studies will be used to correlate laboratory data with disease states. The content for this course is split into two-hour modules with specific focus to a given topic area. Come to one or both. EVENING SESSIONS CHEST X-RAY 101 ZHEC-766-105 - Wednesday, October 19, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 This two-hour course offers a review of basic chest x-ray (CXR) interpretation for healthcare providers. Fundamentals of radiography, standard positions for CXR and evaluation of the technical quality of the CXR will be reviewed. Radiographs will be utilized in class for demonstration purposes and for participants to practice inspection of a CXR. ACUTE PAIN MANAGEMENT ZHEC-772-107 - Thursday, October 13, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 Acute Pain Management has come a long way from painful IM injections, untreated side effects and pain not being addressed in acute care facilities. You will be able to fine tune your pain assessment with the prescribed treatment regimen and discuss with the prescribing healthcare professional concerns you have about a client’s pain report. You will be able to identify who is at risk for undesirable side effects and how to recognize the “difficult” client. Discussion will include the WHO ladder of analgesia, principles of pharmacology, complications of pain management and steps to manage the continued problems with clients and their regimens. The online registration system saves you time and postage costs, and is available at your convenience. • Go to www.racc.edu. • Select WebAdvisor from the Quick Links menu at top right of homepage. • Select Community Education. • Previous Users will use the LOG IN tab at the top of page. • First-Time Users: click on “I’m New to WebAdvisor” link. • Enter Course Code Number exactly as printed in the brochure.
