BUILDING BEDSIDE NURSING SKILL SEMINARS IV VENIPUNCTURE CERTIFICATION COURSES ZHEC-700-101 - Wednesday, October 5, 2011 ZHEC-700-300 - Tuesday, November 8, 2011 Time: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 This course offers a basic comprehensive program review of the anatomy and physiology of the venous system, vein identification, criteria for vein and device selection, equipment, complications, documentation, legal aspects and guidelines for infection control. Goal:

Provide the professional nurse with current knowledge in obtaining and maintaining peripheral venous access. Classroom competency will be obtained by completion of a test with a score of at least 80% and performance of a simulated peripheral IV insertion. Your employer is responsible for validating your bedside competency in performing a peripheral IV insertion in accordance with the institution/agency policies and procedures.

To keep pace with our demands for more sophisticated, long-term peripheral venous access devices, the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) was developed. Special nursing skills and knowledge are required for the safe insertion and management of patients with this type of device. This course is an educational basis with performance for those professionals who are very adept at peripheral access. ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY (ECT): SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION ZHEC-770-102 - Wednesday, October 5, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for certain mental health disorders. Unfortunately, it may be under-utilized in the psychiatric care setting. This is in part due to fear and misunderstanding about the ECT procedure.
