Jamaican Sports Did you know there are tournaments for cricket for 6 year-olds and they have to be very good? But, cricket isn’t the only sport they play, they play football, football is soccer, table tennis, field hockey, tennis, athletics, athletics is track and field, golf and netball. Netball is a game mostly played by girls. And mostly boys play dominoes. They take advantage of outdoor activities like hiking and swimming. http://cdn6.wn.com/vp/i/d7/812ca3f22891a8.jpg

There are also golf tournaments. The “Sunshine Girls” is one of their netball teams. Asafa Powell is an of the athletics player. The “Reggae Boyz” is their national football team. Cricket is Jamaica’s national sport. But, cricket is still more popular then football. In 1998, their football team went to the finals in the World Cup.

Jamaica’s Holidays and Festivals There are many celebrations in Jamaica. First, I am going to tell you about festivals, here are some facts. Every year an annual festival is held to commemorate the most famous Jamaican musician, Bob Marley. The “Bob Marley” festival is held in July on the 22nd through the 23rd. The most famous festival is the Reggae festival. The Reggae festival is on August 16th and it is a huge festival with fireworks, food, games, and lots of other things too. Also every year Jamaica holds a 4th of July festival, and that is just as big as the Reggae Festival and it also honors people who have died in wars, battles, and 9-11. To celebrate the past veterans they say prayers and then have a big parade or a national party. Next I’ll tell you about the other celebration. http://wwwhttp://www.tropicalsky.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/galunganfestival-offerings.jpg.destination360.com/caribbean/jamaica/events

The other celebration I am going to tell you about is holidays in Jamaica.

There are 10 major

holidays in Jamaica. A lot of the holidays are mixed up, compared to us, like Jamaica’s Labor Day is on January 12th instead of September 5th. On the other hand Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Christmas are all the same. Jamaica has some other holidays which include Boxing Day, National Heroes Day, and Half Moon Day as well as many others. Each Holiday has a special meaning like Boxing Day means that it is a sacred day and that you are supposed to have that day off so you can spend time with your family and friends. Did you know that if you are Lutheran you can’t participate in many events because of your religious belief? Well, that’s true, if you are any other religious group, other than Christianity, then you can’t participate in many festivals. Finally I will tell you about the last celebration.

Every year this family goes to the beach for their tradition to celebrate some holidays.

The last celebration is traditions in your family. Long ago there were a lot of traditions made by ancestors who past them down from generation to generation, and if you didn’t know what your traditions were, you were cursed from a dragon and until you knew them all, the dragon would bring bad luck to your family. Of Course, it was just a fable that an ancient history man made up and told everyone. Before Jamaica used to go by what that fable said, but now they go by what their government says to do with the person who didn’t know what his or hers traditions were. Now that you know all about the celebrations you will know more about Jamaica.

Jamaica’s foods Did you know that even though Jamaica is very hot, hummed, and has a lot of bugs; the people there still manage to farm? People in Jamaica can farm, but there isn’t very much space to because Jamaica is only about 51 miles across on its widest point, and only about 4,244 square miles large. The capital of Jamaica, Kingston, is the largest city in Jamaica, besides all of the resorts and vacation spots. There is lot of small towns that hold about 2,847,232 people throughout Jamaica.

What are some popular dishes in Jamaica? Well, Jamaica is a very healthy country because of all of the fish, and the fruit they grow there. Jamaica grows yams, breadfruit, mangoes, pineapples, bananas, and plant fruits and more. A really popular food you might find at dinners in Jamaica is, red beans with rice or many jerk meat. Jerk meat, if you were wondering, is a spicy grilled piece of chicken or pork. People also eat fruit and salted fish as a popular breakfast dish.

Did you know that food in Jamaica has come from all different countries and cultures all over the world? Like the British, the Arawak Indians and a lot of different cultures and tribes in Africa. All of these people and tribes brought food as well as religion and culture to Jamaica. Because of this most people in Jamaica are Christian, and people offend show respect or approval by bumping fists.

Jamaican Arts There are many different arts Jamaican’s enjoy including traditional musical, and theatrical arts. Traditional arts have evolved from rituals and beliefs in society. It has also evolved from political, social, and economics of the country. Some of the Jamaican art includes ceramics, wood work, bamboo carvings, and pottery. Jamaica’s most famous potter is a man by the name Cecil Baugh. No matter what kind of traditional art it is it always has bright colors. Jamaican musical arts play a big role in society. Bob Marley is the most famous Jamaican singer and even has his own celebration on his birthday, February 6th. In Jamaica they love jazz, calypso, reggae, and gospel music. Out of all the different types of music, reggae is the most popular type of music in Jamaica.

Jamaicans love theater. The first theater in Jamaica was built in the year 1682. There was also theater for a national dance company that was built in 1962. Comedies were very popular in theater and were preformed on patios. After the abolishment of slavery, the Jamaicans added humor and dance to their performances.
