CINDY CRAWFORD KEEPS GETTING BETTER

A woman who is refreshingly real when it comes to her attitude to life balance, Cindy is known to say that she adheres to her “80% good, 80% of the time” philosophy as she believes it’s achievable without giving up all the fun

stuff - including a nice glass of vino and piece of dark chocolate at the end of the day. Her attitude towards diet and exercise have changed slightly since her modelling days, when back then, her focus was to look good in a swimming suit. These days she keeps up her wellness routine because it makes her feel good. She favours a 50% cardio and 50% strength training routine and is a big believer in combining socialising with exercise - loving regular hikes with her friends. YOURHOME

Cindy Crawford is best known as being one of the most sought-after supermodels of the 80’s and 90s. Her grace and poise both on and off the catwalk cemented her superstar status, but as she has matured, Cindy has proven herself to be so much more than a pretty face.

7

Her steadfast rule with diets is to cut out processed food. She does not subscribe to fad diets, rather favouring clean eating with the odd sneaky indulgence. These days Cindy spends her time in her Malibu home with husband, former model now entertainment mogul, Rande Gerber, and their two children Kaia and Presley Gerber. What few people know about this beauty is that she was, in fact, a straight A student graduating valedictorian and before taking up modelling full time, she was studying chemical engineering at the renowned Northwestern University on an academic scholarship.

YOURHOME

Needless to say that there is more to Cindy Crawford than remarkable bone structure and a killer figure. So, it is no surprise that since retiring from modelling in 2000, she has continued to aim high and create a new identity, earning great respect and accolades as both a business woman and an entrepreneur.

8

Her transition from catwalk to career woman has been seamless. Her career transition has included a series of 90s fitness videos, a stint on television hosting MTV’s House of Style, the release of her own skincare line Meaningful Beauty, and now she is expanding her

“Be there to guide your children, but let them find their own path.”

successful Cindy Crawford Home Collection which grosses over $250 million annually. For someone so beautiful and so successful, Cindy is surprisingly grounded. She believes in working hard, but being grateful for all you have - qualities that she is determined to instil her two children.

Her greatest achievement however, is her successful marriage to Rande Gerber,

the man she still describes as the love of her life and also, her children. Cindy knew that she always wanted to be a mother and admits that in their household, she is definitely the ‘bad cop’ when it comes to parenting. Copping criticism for allowing her lookalike daughter to enter into the modelling world at the age of 16, Cindy backs her decision and is more afraid of Kaia driving a car than modelling. Her greatest parenting advice is to “be there to guide your children, but let them find their own path.”

YOURHOME

The tragic death of her brother Jeff from leukaemia at the age of 2 when she was just 9, was a formative experience that Cindy believes shaped her life. She has said that the horrific event taught her how to grieve at a young age, but also the need to appreciate life and never take anything for granted. Crawford even believes that the impact of her brother’s death was the motivator in her desire to be successful, to set high goals and work hard.

DECLUTTERING FREES YOU UP When you lead a busy life and barely have time to get a load of washing on, it’s easy to question why you should try to find time to declutter. If you are looking for more freedom in your life or more time in your day, consider making time to declutter, as it can and does change lives. Getting your home organised will give you more space. You’ll find it easier, with fewer possessions, to clean your house and give everything a place - you won’t constantly trip over “stuff” in your path.

YOURHOME

Decluttering gives you more mental space, too. Having piles of possessions everywhere you look drains

10

energy, is stressful, and can be incredibly distracting, particularly if you work from home. Another benefit of decluttering is that it forces you to decide what’s truly important to you. When you decide whether to keep or say goodbye to objects, you become more focused on your goals, values, and priorities. This bleeds into all areas of your life and helps increase productivity, making it easier for you to get motivated to achieve your dreams. Decluttering also assists with financial freedom. When you find a variety of items you don’t need and sell these off, you make

decluttering, you won’t go filling your house straight back up again. Decluttering can also give you freedom in that, with fewer belongings at home, it’s easier to redecorate or move house when you want

to, which can be a very liberating feeling. You’ll be able to travel for extended periods or even rent your streamlined, clutter-free house out while you’re away.

YOURHOME

There are numerous ways to get started, but experts recommend going through your belongings by type, rather than room by room. For example, pile up all your sporting equipment together and go through that, then cooking and eating items, clothing, books, paperwork, toys, then entertainment gear, etc. This is so you can process the full amount of what you own in that group - it is probably far more than you think.

12

As you sort through your possessions, think about why you still own something. If you or a family member uses it regularly and if not, why are you attached to it? If you have things you’re keeping purely because you might use them ‘one day’, or because they were a gift, it’s probably time to say goodbye. Try only to handle goods once, too. That is, decide on items there and then, rather than putting them in a pile to come back to. Don’t box items up and put them in storage to avoid making a decision, either. This retains the clutter, even if it’s more organised and perhaps out of sight most of the time in

Be wary of keeping belongings just because they were a bargain buy or because they bring back a memory for you. If you don’t use something, it’s not much of a bargain at all and is best sent on its way. When it comes to memories, remember that you can take photos of possessions for posterity, or choose just a small number of items from a group (such as your child’s toys or drawings) to keep, and part with the rest. Decluttering works best if you get your whole family involved. Get your

children to go through their possessions, and help them set up designated spaces for their items to be put away at the end of each day. Explain to them that the toys, books, clothes, etc. they’ve grown out of will be donated to another child in need. Once children see the work involved in decluttering and learn how many things they have when others aren’t so fortunate, they’re usually less wanting in the future.

How To Take Back

YOURHOME

YOUR LIFE

14

Whether you know it or not, the life you’re living right now, with all of its imperfections, is the path to the life of your dreams.

you want, whether or not you’re there just yet.

Remember when your career or business was supposed to serve your life, not the other way around? Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn’t work that way, does it?

Maybe you’ve never actually thought about and written down what you want your life to look like.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?

Most people work hard and generally like what they do. Some even love their work and are passionate about it, but it’s just not enough. They don’t get back from their lives what they put into it. If you find you are often consumed by your work and your job or business often takes away from your life, rather than giving you more life, don’t worry, you have the power to change. Maybe you’re frustrated with the way things are but have never really considered how you’d like them to be. Maybe you once had a dream but the difficult realities of your life caused you to abandon it. Sound familiar? Whatever the circumstances, to take

YOURHOME

In deciding to take back your life, you’ll discover how you can create an income that will give you the freedom to decide how much time you spend ‘in’ your job or business and also how much time you spend ‘away’ from your job or business doing what you love; confident that you’re on track to get the results

15

back your life you need to know what makes your life rewarding. What motivates you? What makes you feel most alive? What do you really care about? When you discover the answers, it opens the door to a rewarding life lived with purpose.

C R E AT E A V I S I O N T HAT SERVES YO U N OT E NS L AVES YO U! “Work to live, not live to work.” It’s a cliche we know but the thing about cliches is that they’re often dead on.

YOURHOME

So, what path does your career or business need to take to give you the life you want to live?

16

If you want more life, then you have to invest some of the income you earn to create extra (or passive) income that you don’t actually get up every day to work for. Income from

property, shares or reinvesting the net profit from your business. That extra income will create the life you want to live - one that energizes you rather than drains you, where you can have fun, be yourself and not be limited by the “work” version of yourself. For example, if your vision is that you want an income that supports your family but doesn’t depend on you working all the time, then you have to create a plan for your investments to operate self-sufficiently. If you want a 6-figure for life within the next 5, 10 or 15 years, you need to think about your investing now to make that possible. If you want to take back your life, there needs to be a direct and purposeful link between the vision of your ideal life and the plan of your investments.

B E R U TH L ES S W I TH YO U R TI M E

to do what you want when you stop working.

This is where things can get challenging.

The quickest way to change your thinking and your habits is to let go of your need to do everything yourself and begin to let others produce results to meet your expectations. Then you can focus on what you’re good at, your job or business, and your ‘support team’ can do the rest (without your hard work and effort).

If you’re always working and spending all your money, you’re never going to have the freedom or the money

Time is your most precious resource - use it well and you’ll be rewarded!

YOURHOME

You have to change. You need to think differently and it won’t feel comfortable at the start but will become second nature before too long. You also have to drop some long-ingrained habits and behaviours. There’s no getting around it.

How Your Empty 18

Nest Can Thrive

What percentage of marriages are happy after 20 or 30 years? Marriages take a great deal of work from both partners and after a couple of decades, it’s easy to get complacent. After years of diapers, ball games, piercings, and proms, the kids have grown up and started lives (and maybe even families) of their own and you are left with a lot of time alone, together. If you’re adjusting to life as an empty nester—and yes, it can take years— you might relish your newfound freedom. At the same time, your days may feel a little more empty. You might be searching for new meaning in your life. Perhaps you’re sad, excited, and relieved, all at the same time. Or maybe you’ve been an empty nester for a while now, and are simply looking for more meaning and joy in your dayto-day. The truth is: It’s never too late to create the relationship that is life giving to both of you. Arriving at the empty nest stage can be a time of renewal. Having more time to focus on yourself and your marriage can be rich and exciting.

YOURHOME

Couples who simply react to this new time of life don’t do as well as couples who are proactive and deliberate about planning what their life together will be like. It is ironic that so many of us plan so carefully for every other

19

aspect of our upcoming retirement second life but think and plan so little for what matters within our most important stewardship and is the key to our happiness: the quality and durability of our marriages.

using the same 1-10 scale, but for specific areas. How would you rate:

There’s not “one right way” to work on your marriage. You can read books together, go to a marriage retreat, work with a relationship coach, or create intentional habits and rituals that keep you connected.

How we spend leisure time

The point is to not go into neutral. You’re either moving towards each other, or away from each other. Neutral is actually a form of moving away from each other, not something you want in your marriage.

So where to begin?

YOURHOME

Consider an informal assessment of your relationship by asking: On a scale of 1-10 (10 being “I couldn’t be any happier”), how satisfied are you with our relationship?”

20

Another is to consider common areas of happiness measures. You could ask

Our communication levels Our ability to work through differences

Frequency / quality of sex How we handle money How we share responsibilities at home How we are caring for our health Take in the information without defensiveness, begin with the highest score, and acknowledge an area you both feel is working well. It’s always good to begin with something positive. Next, take the lowest rating, and use it as a launchpad to discuss how you each would like to see improvements in this area. Make your requests as specific and measurable as possible, as you brainstorm a plan to focus just on this

area for a time. Even if there are several areas that you both agree could be better, change happens by focusing on one thing at a time.

Now it is possible to leisurely go to the movies whenever you want without the crowds that weekends bring. Getaways.

For instance, maybe you both agree you’re not happy with how you’re handling money. After discussing what’s important to each of you, you agree that as a couple, you will save $100/month for a year, by decreasing eating out by 50%. This meets all the criteria and gives you a specific plan that allows you to measure progress over the coming year.

Time to enjoy This is the time to dream together and enjoy more time as a couple and these can be the best years of a marriage. Here are a few ways to celebrate and enjoy the empty nest together. Tuesday nights = Saturday nights.

Trips no longer have to be booked at peak rates during winter and spring breaks according to school calendars and can be spontaneous, less expensive and entirely your own creation. No More Dress Code. Having no children afoot, you can get your coffee in your underwear and not give it a second thought. The master bedroom door can stay open and your lovelife can be spiced up with endless privacy. Redefine your living space. Turn the empty bedroom into a craft space or design an exercise room together. At the end of the day, you can choose to make this a wonderful chapter in your marriage and take the lead. Your positive attitude will provide a great base for your partner to jump aboard.

YOURHOME

Come up with a S.M.A.R.T plan. The steps/goals you are reaching for should be: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time based.

Christmas 22

Life can be a bit of a minefield at times, especially at Christmas time. It can be so busy, we may do or say things we normally wouldn’t, toss aside our typical, mindful spending habits and give into the holiday hype of buy, buy, buy. We tend to eat and drink whatever we want, celebrate a little harder than we normally would and after we bid farewell to the holidays, we are left cleaning up the mess — financially, emotionally and physically. So here are a few tips to help you stay on track and make the most of this Christmas, without the aftermath.

Remember Not To Confuse Love With Gifts

than our wallets allow. Be mindful of what we can spend without creating pain for ourselves after Christmas. Before you do your shopping this year, take the time to sit down and write out a clear list of gifts and prices to clarify what you’re going to spend. Add an alternative gift idea for each one, just in case you can’t find what you’re looking for. Many of us feel compelled to outspend other families, turning Christmas into a game of “Keep Up With The Joneses”. It’s a game you can never win and your family members don’t win in the long-run either; they learn that Christmas is only about what you get. Honour your gift-giving budget. Buy your loved ones the best gift you

YOURHOME

There is nothing we love more than giving gifts to our loved ones on Christmas morning. Watching their eyes light up and hearing their cries of joy as they open their gifts is a heartwarming gift in itself, but sometimes our love and generosity extends further

23

can afford and keep it reasonable. Give it to them with your love and it will be received with love. Remember, Christmas isn’t all about piling up superexpensive gifts - gifts are just one little piece of the whole magical experience. It is intended to be a time of love, giving and community. Spend a little more time sharing the decorating, cooking, music and traditions of Christmas morning with your loved ones and focus less on the gifts.

Prioritise Downtime For many of us, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year, but it is equally the busiest time of the year. It seems like we are constantly running from one thing to another, shopping, preparing food, decorations, wrapping, going to parties, preparing for guests or packing for your visit. It is exhausting, not to mention stressful.

YOURHOME

There are obviously some festivities that we don’t want to miss, but we don’t have to accept every party invitation or run ourselves

24

ragged either. It is okay to decline an invitation. Christmas is a special time of the year, but it loses its power when we don’t give ourselves time to relax. Review your calendar and set aside plenty of quiet time where the family can relax together. If you normally stress out over Christmas, why not choose to keep things super-simple this year?

Indulge A Little, Not A Lot

Keep It Simple In The Kitchen

‘Tis the season for indulgence, and whether it be a festive holiday party or a family dinner, we are surrounded by extravagant foods and alcoholic drinks.

A lamb leg on the barbecue is a lot easier to prepare than a roast turkey, an icecream cake simpler than a Christmas pudding and peanut butter biscuits take just 15 minutes, as opposed to shortbread.

You can choose some simple food swaps, such as using whole-wheat bread instead of white, brown rice dishes instead of white, enjoy seasonal treats, but watch portion sizes. One day of indulgence will not impact your waistline as long as you get back on track the next day. Take those walks to digest and ease off the treats again.

You can add your own touch to ready-bought ingredients. There’s a reason shops sell Christmas puddings and ready-made hams – so you can buy them at the last minute and then add your own touch. For example, buy individual Christmas puddings, but make a wickedly indulgent boozy custard, or grab a good-quality cooked ham, and choose an easy glaze recipe to make it special. Hide all the packaging and no one will know the difference. Rally the troops and delegate, delegate, delegate! There’s no shame in asking family and friends to help prepare a menu item for Christmas dinner and choose dishes you can prepare well ahead of time. YOURHOME

You can maintain healthy lifestyle habits during the holidays if you continue to eat a healthful diet during the day. Eat some highprotein snacks, such as yogurt or an apple with peanut butter, so that you are not too hungry by the time that special dinner arrives.

25

ROAD-TRIPPING FAMILIES

YOURHOME

WITH THE FAMILY

26

Imagine waking up somewhere new every day or every week, exploring diverse places, meeting new people and breaking free of the shackles of the modern day rat race. More and more people are looking at long-term travel as an achievable lifestyle choice. With remote working and remote learning becoming more and more readily available there has been a definite surge in the number of singles, couples and families looking to live the freedom of life on the road. Long term travel can be one of the most life changing experiences that broadens the mind, makes you far more open minded, more independent and even more confident.

When deciding if life on the road is a suitable choice for you there are a number of things that you need to closely consider including your family set up, financial viability, work and education set up as well as your values, dreams and ultimately your goals and what you want to get out of the experience. For many people the allure comes with escaping the stress and burden of large mortgages and the stress of modern day living. For others it is a way to spend quality time with their children before they become all grown others whilst for many it is the allure of discovering new places, people and travelling.

Make no mistake, making the choice to travel for an extended period of time is not an easy one but there is a whole gambit of reasons why it is becoming a popular one.

YOURHOME

So why are people increasingly choosing to live life on the road?

27

Although on paper the decision to be a full time nomad and escaping the monotony of “normal” life don’t be lulled into the misconception that life on the road is all rainbows and unicorns. Like most experiences, living life on the road has its ups and downs and can present plenty of interesting challenges. Here are some of our top suggestions to making the most of living life on the road.

YOURHOME

● Decide your mode of transport and rough itinerary. It is important to work out the best way for your family to travel on your adventure and this might include a variety of modes of transport. Consider carefully how you plan to get around and what accommodation options do you think will meet your needs. Many families opt for campervans and use campsites whilst others like to travel by train or boat. Working out where you want to go and

28

how long you want to spend in each of these places will help you greatly in deciding the most suitable mode of transport. ● Automate as much as possible. Even on the road, you’re likely to have bills, such as your insurance payment. Schedule payments ahead of time through your bank to reduce worry. You may also be able to answer most email questions with an automated email, or handle other business details. ● Consider work options. You may be able to arrange for extended leave to be used. It may be very beneficial for you to speak to your employer because if they value you as an employee they may bend over backwards to keep you or create a distance opportunity for you - even if it’s part time. Alternatively, there is plenty of work for home opportunities nowadays, provided you can get internet access on a regular basis.

● Give each of you a couple of hours away from everyone regularly. Going for a hike, fish or surf is great, or if you need some pampering the hairdressers is always a good one and make a point to wake up earlier than the kids and go for a walk/run, do some yoga, have a shower and a cuppa – it may be the only chance you’ll get! We hope that these suggestions help you to take the first steps to living life on the road, following your dreams and not only surviving but thriving in the process.

YOURHOME

● Consider education options if needed. Pursuing an education while traveling provides some unique opportunities and challenges. Research plenty of tips, links, resources and advice about homeschooling on the road before you go ● Keep up your routines. If littlies have a day sleep, try and establish some sleeping cues early on so they know it’s time for a sleep. Plan your long drives around nap time so they sleep in the car and you can get some good distance under your belt. Kids thrive on routine so keeping an element of routine about their day will benefit everyone and give you a break. ● You will have your mini adventurers with you 24/7 …which means having no break. ie. no

grandparents to palm the kids off to and no regular mummy/ daddy friendship circles to plan a playdate with, to share the load and tire the kids out. Expect some tough days as everyone adjusts to sleeping in the same room, bunk beds or tent. Another good tip if you are in a caravan is to make sure you have curtains for each bed which allows older kids to have their own little room as well as help keep out the light to encourage a sleep in.

Christmas is almost on our doorstep and as this difficult year comes to an end never before has it been more important to gather together with family and friends and celebrate the festive season. Nothing speaks Christmas more than a delicious glazed ham that can be served warm and then nibbled on as leftovers for days after. This maple, orange bourbon glazed ham will be the star of any Christmas spread. Not only does it look sensational but it also has all the delicious flavours that keep the ham juicy and moist.

YOURHOME

To make the most of your ham this Christmas make sure you just slice what you need on the day as leftover ham on the bone will stay succulent for much longer than carved meat.

A great trick to store the ham on the bone is to wrap it in a seasoned cloth. Ideally, this would be a clean tea towel or pillowcase or a purpose made ham bag. Simply rinse your cloth of choice in a solution of two cups of white vinegar and two litres of water and allow it to dry before wrapping the whole ham in the fabric and storing in the fridge. 1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius 2. Place the ham on a roasting rack in a roasting pan with the fat side up. Using a small, sharp knife gently score the fat in a crosshatch pattern. Be careful not to cut into the meat. 3. Add approximately 1 cup of water to the pan and bake the ham for 45 minutes. 4. Whilst the ham is cooking combine the marmalade, bourbon, maple syrup, cinnamon, butter and cloves into a small saucepan over a low heat. Cook stirring regularly for about 20-25 minutes or until the glaze is thick and syrupy. 5. Take the ham out of the oven and brush it with about half of the glaze and then return it to the oven. Continue roasting the ham for another 45 – 60 minutes whilst basting it with remaining glaze at 15 minute intervals. 6. Remove the ham from the oven and allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes before carving.
