This November marks the 10th anniversary of Quirk Magazine. It’s been a wonderful journey over the years as we’ve had the opportunity to share the stories of so many fascinating people in Southern Alberta. Our area is rich with artistic talent in a multitude of mediums from traditional artwork to horse-hair hitching, forging, ammolite jewellry, intricate woodsculpting and even gourds! We’ve featured local talent who have won national shows like Canadian Idol with Theo Tams and So You Think You Can Dance Canada winner, Tara-Jean Popowich. And although they didn’t win, Amazing Race Canada contestants, Nancy Csabay along with husband and wife team, Julie and Lowell Taylor captured the hearts of many Canadians across the country. Our community has a lot to be proud of. We’d like to thank our readers, and especially, we’d like to thank the businesses who have supported us through the years. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to share your stories. Support local business whenever possible, they are the ones who support our community in so many ways!

Power Steering

My first apartment was a humble abode, as most first apartments are. It had cheap lino, painted-shut windows, and a kitchen the size of a closet. But more than the dated finishes and that indefinable accumulated smell of a dozen former tenants, I remember how I felt sitting there alone…truly alone for the first time…surrounded by donated furniture and pending decisions. It was a swell; an expansion. You knew it once too. That realization that you’ve finally escaped the years of parental oversight. A sudden and indescribable freedom. But some people continue to feel safest when bound by others – in reality or in their imagination. And it’s no wonder. You never have to admit your mistakes when you have someone to blame. You can complain instead of resolve. You can avoid the trouble of growing. You “Our deepest fear can convince yourself that it would be foolish to Victimhood isn’t fun, but it sure is easy, and it’s is not that we are try. the status symbol of our age. It’s terribly inadequate. Our unfashionable in 2019 to feel powerful.

Quirk - 8

allotted wishes amused me greatly. She wanted a miniature car, just her size, to drive around town. The funny part is that she wanted a remote control for this car so that her sister could steer for her. I questioned the remote, but she was adamant. Oh, how many of us choose to live this way, confident in the power that moves us, but afraid to take the steering wheel in our own hands.

Time is wasted bemoaning the results of an election, making assumptions about the motives of others, or imagining all the ways the game could be rigged. Why complain that someone else is steering your car when you keep packing fresh batteries into the remote control? Think of the places you could go, if only you dared to own the destination as well as the detours. As written so eloquently by Marianne Williamson, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure”. We are too often afraid to steer. We forget that the feeling of freedom that came to us in that transition from child to adult was really a feeling of responsibility. The first and the greatest. Your life is yours and to live it well, you must have the courage to take the wheel.

By: Jean Van Kleek The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge is gorgeous any time of year, but in winter it takes on an extra special beauty with the addition of more than 125,000 LED lights strung everywhere around the grounds during the Winter Light Festival. This year is the fourth annual festival at Nikka Yuko, and it has fast become a shared tradition for families and friends over the holiday season for good reason. Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden takes you to a faraway place that instantly calms and relaxes Quirk - 10

you bringing a smile to your face any time of year, but the Winter Light Festival is simply magical and awe inspiring. There have been many wonderful pictures taken of the festival, but it is almost impossible to capture the experience one finds in person as the lights twinkle in the crisp winter air and each garden path brings you to stunning views along the way.

“Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden takes you to a faraway place that instantly calms and relaxes you bringing a smile to your face any time of year, but the Winter Light Festival is simply magical and awe inspiring.” The trees, shrubbery, bridges and building are all sparkling with multicoloured lights, creating a truly magical landscape on a crisp wintry night. Two years ago the amazing Mount Fuji light display was added, creating a wonderful a mesmerizing focal point across the pond. The thousands of lights have been meticulously arranged to enhance the natural esthetics of the gardens and complement the types of trees growing there. Maples are adorned with red lights; crabapple trees are pink; Scotch pines are green and blue; and Mugo pines are green and white. The beautifully decorated trees are enhanced by the twinkling foot bridges and brightly lit waterfall that is the focal point from the Japanese Teahouse deck. There is a Japanese bell tower that guests are free to ring. It’s a beautiful haunting sound that rings through the crisp evening air. The gardens also contain a Grand Russian Olive tree and wishing well.

There are carefully designed views around every corner; the hallmark of Nikka Yuko’s “hide and reveal” design. While the waterfall is the focal point from the Teahouse deck; as we follow the path around the pond, the Romance Tree takes centre stage. Mount Fuji floats on clouds of low pines as we approach the Bell Tower. Beyond the park, Henderson Lake adds perspective, making the gardens appear larger than they are - a technique called “borrowed view."

New this year is an exciting partnership with California Dream Limousine. Guests will be able to view all the beautiful light displays throughout the city from the warmth and comfort of a bus from California Dream. For $25, guests receive admission to see the lights at Nikka Yuko, as well as one of the signature Matcha Maple cookies and one regular beverage (hot chocolate, tea, coffee, water) and a 1 to 1.5 hour bus tour of Lethbridge winter lights.

The very popular Basha Nori (Horse & Wagon) rides will be back every Saturday in December. Take part in a time-honoured Canadian tradition by taking a wagon ride through Henderson Lake. Include this ride in your visit to the garden as well as one beverage for only $15. Basha Nori will be available every Saturday in December, as well as December 23 and January 4.

This year Nikka Yuko partnered with the Little Lethbridge Opera Company for their Golden Maple Reception in September. The garden is pleased to be hosting this wonderful local opera company to sing outside while guests tour the lights on Saturdays. Enjoy this unique experience to add additional magic to your night.

Built to celebrate friendship between Canada and Japan, the gardens promote Japanese culture in a beautiful and serene environment. And during the Winter Lights Festival, this beautiful environment simply glows with celebration. Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is one of only five publicly accessible Japanese gardens in Canada and is truly a Southern Alberta treasure. Quirk - 12

Olivia Cheng: The Road From Journalist to Actress Photos: Randall Michelson/Film Independent

One of the best parts of having worked for 20 years at Global TV in Lethbridge was getting to meet some very talented reporters who got their start here and moved on to bigger markets like Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and even Washington DC to report at the White House. Olivia Cheng took a different path by moving from journalism to acting. As you’ll see here, she’s had quite a career and has had some terrific roles. She is a very busy person and took some time out to answer a few questions.

You are a proud Asian Canadian of Cantonese-speaking Immigrant parents. You were born and raised in Edmonton. Talk about your life growing up in Canada and how important it was to maintain your cultural roots.

I’m a prairie kid who grew up in rural Alberta catching frogs before moving to Edmonton where I planned Halloween costumes around whether I could fit ski pants underneath for trick or treating. It was really important to my parents though that I understood where they had come from and they helped co-found the Edmonton Chinese Bilingual program where I learned Mandarin and celebrated Chinese customs and holidays. I’m so grateful to them for that. Did you always aspire to being an actress?

No, but I think the signs were all there that I had an artistic streak. It depended what environment I was in and how safe I felt, but in the right conditions, I was clearly a performer in a family that didn’t know what to do with one.

Before we get into your acting career, let’s get to your journalistic achievements. One of your very first assignments was to cover the horrific Pine Lake Tornado. Describe that experience.

I was a student and I think I was only three weeks into my summer internship when the tornado hit. I just happened to be waiting for a ride home to Edmonton when the police scanners went crazy. There were two camera men left and we thought a big traffic accident had just gone down as snippets of conversation came through. We figured we’d grab some quick footage and then head home for the weekend. But then we arrived on scene and realized what was happening. It was awful. It was like a movie, helicopters flying overhead, people wandering around bloody and dazed, trailers twisted up like Quirk - 16

cans cut open and all the random things lying around that had been blown around. We were there before so many of the first responders that at various point we all chose to help people because they needed help more than we needed to record them dying.

One of the victims of that disaster was Monica Cove of Lethbridge. You provided a great deal of assistance to her. She said to me that you had the kindest voice she had ever heard. It must feel wonderful to know how significant that kindness was.

I get emotional thinking about that, and I’m so moved to know she remembers me because I can never forget her. I remember how injured she was, and how she couldn’t move, and how I think she was playing down her pain because of the child who sat at her feet. I was messed up from the tornado the next couple of weeks, every time I heard a siren I just started crying and I’d wonder how she was doing. I was so happy to meet her again a year later at a blood drive in memory of those who didn’t survive the tornado.

You ended up at Global Lethbridge and of course I can’t do this interview without discussing your famous (or infamous?) police taser story. Please remind everyone about that one. That turned out so unintentionally campy, I think that’s why it went viral. Lethbridge had just added tasers to their police service and it was a big deal. I wanted to do a report about it and I thought, “How can you do a story about tasers and not see someone get tased?” I was a big fan of reporter involvement stories and I thought this would be the perfect time

for one because it didn’t seem cool to ask someone else to get electrocuted on my behalf. So I volunteered to be tasered. I didn’t think it would be as painful as it was, and I dropped like a sack of bricks. I thought Steve would cut the camera but instead he kept rolling and handed me the mic, I just remember trying to hide how cooked my brain felt. Then the officers around me also wanted to get tased to see if they could withstand it better than me. It all turned out funnier than I intended, I think in part because I was so earnest and wasn’t trying to be funny at all. It was picked up by Spike TV and some Australian show that licensed it for a show about dumb reporter moments caught on camera. I wish I still had a copy of it to show my niece and nephew. It got banned from YouTube.

You went on to be a freelance correspondent for ET Canada. How did that come about and what was that experience like?

I had just moved to Vancouver and I figured I couldn’t do the news anymore because I had crossed into acting but I figured I could use my media skills in a different way. I just emailed ET Canada with a demo reel and they responded immediately and asked if I could interview 50 Cent the next day. I think he got stuck at the border or something but the next week my first interview was Kanye West. What was your first big break in your acting career?

Broken Trail. That was the first job where I was on set for about 3 months and I had so much fun I just kept going after that.

How significant was that for you to be in such an acclaimed series and to work with someone like Robert Duval? I didn’t fully understand how I’d caught lightening in a bottle at the time. But now I look back and see how that project and his mentorship changed the trajectory of my life. I’m forever grateful to him and Walter Hill for seeing something in me that I didn’t even know I had yet.

You have a remarkable resume of acting jobs. Let me ask you about some significant roles and your thoughts about them. I remember doing an interview with you around 2008 about the documentary “Iris Chang: The Rape of Nanking. You were very passionate about working on this. Yes. Iris Chang is a big hero of mine. Olivia2nanking

Quirk - 18

The Netflix series Marco Polo where you played the significant character of Mei Lin. How different was it to work on a project with what I understand had a huge budget? It was like going from an awesome community park where you’ve always had a great time to suddenly being handed a VIP fast pass to Disneyland. You’re now going to have a GREAT time! It was the actor version of winning a race to go represent your country in the Olympics.

Sorry…I have to ask…A lot of nudity in that one. Aside from not wanting your parents to see those bits, how hard (or easy) was it to do those scenes? It was hard. Definitely not easy. Imagine how self conscious you’d feel just standing in your underwear in front of people you don’t know. Now lose the underwear. How much more vulnerable are you going to feel knowing everyone you know has access to your nude image in an era where internet trolls can be absolute monsters? It’s not a decision I made lightly, especially when I’m painfully aware of how Asian women have been historically portrayed in Hollywood and grappling with whether my performance would move the needle forward or push it back.

Your latest project is Warrior which is based on an original idea from Bruce Lee. Talk about your role and the significance in being in a show inspired by such a legend. I play a fictionalised version of Ah Toy, one of San Francisco’s most notorious madams of the 1800’s. In our show, Ah Toy is a crime boss in her own right who has the respect of the crime families in Chinatown because they know how cunning and ruthless she can be. But she’s also incredibly caring, and in a different world, one where she’s not living in a hostile America in the midst of creating the Chinese Exclusion Act, she probably could’ve been a revered citizen of society.

It’s mind blowing to be part of the Bruce Lee legacy now. His daughter, Shannon Lee, is one of our executive producers and she gave us all drawings and handwritten notes her dad made when creating the concept for this show. He was just so ahead of his time that Hollywood wouldn’t give his idea a shot. Everyone involved with the show feels a responsibility and a reverence for bringing his dream to life. Especially because it deals with themes of xenophobia and immigration that are so relevant to what’s happening right now. What is the toughest part of your career as you continue to search for great stories and roles? Patience and faith. Creating consistency in all the inconsistency. Jet lag and exhaustion.

What advice do you give to young girls who want to pursue this line of work? This industry will constantly test your sense of self, even when it’s celebrating you. Fortify your soul and feed your spirit carefully to counter all that. Find a tribe that supports you and celebrates your wins with you. Read books that fuel your imagination. Find mentors. Be a girl who supports other girls. Create for the sake of having fun and trying. Accept that you’ll fail but it’s who gets back up that determines your longevity. Understand you’ll have to play the game at times but do it with integrity, and look for ways to change the game for the better. Never try to be less weird because you’re worried about people liking you. That weirdness is your greatest asset as an artist.

CELEBRATING

Women in Business Recently we published a special edition titled “Celebrating Women in Business”. In it, we featured 21 top entrepreneurs from Southern Alberta who exemplify the tenacity, forward-thinking and drive it takes to succeed in business. It takes a special kind of person to take on the challenges of starting a business, but women, especially, face a unique set of challenges on their road to success. In the big picture, it hasn’t been that many years that women have held a spot in the workplace, never mind becoming upper management and having a seat at the table. But even with a seat at the table, their voices aren’t often heard. This is

Mocha Cabana

why we feel it’s especially important to recognize women who know their place… and that place is anywhere they want it to be! In the boardroom, as CEO’s, as business owners, as influencers… women are following their path and making a difference along the way. This feature contains highlights of each of the articles.

Look for the “Celebrating Women in Business” magazine online at www.quirkmagazine.net or on stands throughout the city.

Jaclyn Geddes/Angel Harper

Jaclyn Geddes and Angel Harper both grew up in small town farming communities. Both say their core values came from being raised in an environment where hard work, caring for your neighbor, supporting each other and being straight up and honest were most important. These core values remain with them throughout every aspect of their business from supporting local producers to providing a training ground for upcoming chefs form Lethbridge Community College. These two ladies are best of friends with two completely different personalities that complement each other to create a real force in the local restaurant industry. They have worked very hard making Mocha Cabana an inviting, unique destination that will please the palate and bring a smile, but as with most successful entrepreneurs, they are always looking for new ways to grow. Most recently they launched “Mocha Local”, a very exciting new component to their brand. In keeping with the trend to order meal kits that can be prepared in the comfort of your home, Jaclyn and Angel have created well over 150 easy to follow recipes to create mouth-watering meals using locally sourced ingredients when possible, along with their signature sauces and salad dressings. The Mocha Local site also offers delivery of fresh farmers market products. They are the first 100% local meal kit service in Southern Alberta and plan to expand province-wide in the future.

Lodestone Leadership Janet Murray

Calgary raised Janet Murray spent most of her adult life raising her five children. Janet grew up instilled with good values she says, and wanted her children to grow up with the same values. After her children were grown and found a path of their own she found herself wondering what to do next. Two of her biggest fears were riding horses and flying. She decided to overcome these fears and not only started flying, but earned her pilot license. She took riding lessons and her fear of horses turned into a passion for them. “Equine learning fell into my heart and soul just like a puzzle piece; all of it made sense to me” she says. She studied horses and their leadership behaviors through worldrenowned Equine Learning Instructor, Linda Kohanov, and in 2016 established Lodestone Leadership. At Lodestone, the skills learned through Janet’s practise can be applied to any life situation and she encourages aspiring entrepreneurs, team leaders, teachers and individuals to visit. “It’s powerful work. I can teach the concepts… but the horses are the real teachers”.

execuserv plus inc. Gillian Nish

Born and raised in Cardston, AB, Gillian Nish has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. After completing the Business Administration program at Lethbridge Community College, Gillian took a position as CEO at the Chinook Country Tourism Association eventually moving to Calgary to head the Tourism Association of Alberta. It was Gillian who created the signature slogan “Smile, You’re a Tourist Attraction!” along with it’s very successful campaign that was utilized by Alberta Tourism for many years. After eight years in this position, the desire to return “home” and the entrepreneurial bug that is a large part of her DNA, brought her back to Lethbridge where she started her own company. execuserv plus inc came into fruition in 1988 as a home-based business that centered on market research and business plans with much of her work still with the tourism industry. The pivotal turning point for Gillian came 10 years into her business when she put together a proposal for a government contract for a self-employment program. Against some very tough competition, and an upfront commitment without knowing the outcome, Gillian took a huge chance that paid off in the end. She won the contract and twenty years later, the contract continues to be awarded to execuserv plus each year. Her 26 week program is highly successful with an 82% average success rate, which is almost unheard of with an industry standard of 50%.

Honkers Pub & Eatery Vicky Miller

Entrepreneur Vicky Vanden Hoek was raised on a farm in Milo, AB. It was there she learned her strong work ethic and an understanding of how important it is to be involved and make a difference in your community. Her foray into business began with a friend creating the very successful “Palate Pleasers Catering” company in 1988. While still running the catering company she began at 2&7 television (now Global) working her way into the promotions department. It was a crazy time for Vicky working full-time, running the catering business and raising two young boys, but it didn’t stop her from buying a pub with some partners. On March 17, 1997, Honkers Pub & Eatery was born, with Vicky working her first shift as owner. She is now the only solo female pub owner in Lethbridge, operating Honkers at the same location to this day. In 2018 Vicky expanded Honkers adding two private Meeting/Event rooms that allow minors under a special license. The new section is called “The Nest” and offers anything from early morning breakfast meetings, lunch & learn to celebrations of any kind. The pub has also seen some new renovations this year and offers live music every weekend. Vicky and her team have worked very hard over the years to ensure they offer consistently good homestyle food and service, keeping Honkers Pub & Eatery the go-to place for friends to meet and enjoy!

Cornerstone Funeral Home Kinga Zentner

Kinga Zentner brings her own style and personality to the funeral business, without apology. While most people have an assumed or presumed notion of what a funeral should be, Kinga will show you what it could be. Her journey to becoming a funeral director came to her unexpectedly. Her husband Travis and his family, including his parents, Faith and Ralph Zentner owned Cornerstone Funeral Home where, occasionally Kinga would assist with a funeral by ushering or helping with flowers. At the time, she had a very successful career in finance. It was her mother-in-law, Faith, who has since passed, that suggested she train as a funeral director. Later, Ralph asked her to join the team, which she did with the same bold enthusiasm she brings to everything she does. Kinga says, ”A big goal of mine is to get people comfortable with death, you know we don’t talk about it and people are afraid… and then there’s no value attached to it when there should be”. Her gift is being present. She listens, truly listens. While many clients still choose a very traditional path, Kinga opens the door to a personalized celebration. A butterfly release. A barbecue. Respectful, but unique. Kinga says, “It’s important to me that families have a meaningful memory of their loved one, so I spend a lot of time just talking with them. In the end, we’re all here to walk each other home”.

One Spirit Integrative Medicine Heather Gunn

There have been countless debates about what the best medicine is when it comes to healing or dealing with chronic illness: Is it laughter? Faith? Hope? Regardless of the belief, pharmaceuticals rarely make it into the debate. Many are beginning to navigate towards the idea that the best form of healing lies beyond medical interventions. Even medical professionals have witnessed inexplicable miracles or have reported the difference that compassion has made through a patient’s recovery. Heather Gunn, RN, clinical hypnotherapist and owner of One Spirit Integrative Medicine in Fort Macleod believes it comes from within the individual. Working strategically with both sides of the brain-the logical side and the creative side-and through an approach tailored to individual needs, Heather melds the two together. She says effective hypnotherapy is about getting past the brain, and into the heart. Heather endeavors to empower her clients through an understanding that they are ultimately in control of their own healing process. “It’s about getting out of here, “she points to her head,” and into here,” smiling, she points to the heart. The body knows how to heal. Science tells us so. We just need to step aside with the dignity and grace to give it the opportunity to do so.”

Dr. Pardip Athwal is an Oakville, Ontario native who, after travelling through Western Canada, decided to make her home here in Lethbridge. She enjoys the feel of a smaller city and set up her practise in 2012, establishing “Back in Balance Wellness Centre”. Pardip has always been fascinated with the human body and its ability to heal itself. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, obtained her diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture, and ultimately completed her Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. Pardip believes in optimal wellness; educating patients about the link between body, mind and soul. She often asks: “Do those things that keep you busy make you happy? If not, why are you doing them?” Pardip is very excited about her plans to expand Back in Balance Wellness Centre in 2020. Her goal is to offer an integrated space with a variety of natural health care services so that Lethbridge residents can explore their options and take charge of their own health. “I want to create a welcoming space for the community, where people feel heard, where they can heal and enjoy some laughter, connection and joy in the process”.

MoonSong Photography Rebecca Orr

Utah born Rebecca Orr made Lethbridge home after many years spent in Calgary and Magrath, AB. This mother of five and new grandma to one has always loved photography. She recounts fond memories of her dad pulling by the roadside to get a shot during their travels. It wasn’t until her dad bought her a DSLR camera that Rebecca began studying the camera in earnest, photographing things she loved while hiking. It came to her that she could perhaps turn her love of photography from a hobby into a business, giving her the freedom to work on her own terms. It was a bit of an adjustment from shooting scenery that was just her and nature to photographing people, but it’s been very satisfying for Rebecca to share special moments with her subjects. She says, ”Every shoot is different, has its’ own dynamic and every session is a new puzzle to figure out”. While Rebecca notices trends, she isn’t ruled by them. She likes to go with the flow for each subject, creating unique and natural shots. Rebecca adds, ”Photos are special, they really are. I’ve gathered every picture of my dad since he’s passed and just put them in my office. They mean everything to me. Taking a photo isn’t so much about having the best picture on social media, it’s about catching moments, because eventually the moments are all you have, make them special!”

Doing Death Differently Michelle Lemon

Death and dying are subjects that, in our culture, we have difficulty talking about. This is one of the reasons why when faced with someone passing, we aren’t equipped to deal with what is surely one of the most traumatic moments we experience in this life. Michelle Lemon suffered several traumatic losses beginning at a very young age. It was through the search to heal her own grief, depression and loss that she discovered she had the ability to assist others in their healing. In 2001 Michelle had young adults living with her who struggled with daily life, depression and suicidal tendencies. After a few years, she happened upon an opening with a funeral home in Calgary where she felt honored to work with the families to ease their grief. Around the same time, she worked with a veterinarian assisting with in-home euthanasia and grief counselling. While the work she was doing was fulfilling, she still felt there was a void. She discovered end of life doula training and instinctively knew this was her calling. She studied at the Conscious Dying Institute in Vancouver, becoming a certified End of Life Doula four years ago. While Michelle works within a framework, there is no set script, as each family is unique. Michelle helps to bring comfort and peace, assisting through grief and forgiveness and brings healing practises to the sacred process of dying. n

Stage Right Wendy R. Herbers

Wendy Herbers’ life is full of passion; for the picturesque prairies she calls home; for her husband and two successful daughters; for the opportunity to support future generations; and the chance to follow her dreams while giving back to the community. The spark to create a staging and interior design business came after watching HGTV in the mid-2000’s. She says, “I thought that would be so fun to get to work with people to transform theirs homes. Everything just kind of fell into place”. Wendy then completed QC Design School’s Home Staging and Redesign and Professional Colour consultant programs as well as Furniture Installation and Styling training with Canadian designer, Kimberly Seldon. The next chapter began with Wendy creating “Stage Right”, a business specializing in several services including pre-listing consultations, staging vacant homes to sell, as well as residential and commercial decorating. Thanks to Wendy’s confidence, her ability to build positive relationships and her powerhouse team of four Stylists, Stage Right’s services have helped sell more than $1 billion in real estate in Lethbridge since 2008. “There have been great opportunities in a lot of sectors”, says Wendy, “When you open the door, you never know what is on the other side. I’m a big believer in looking for what you love to do and spending your time doing what makes you happy. The best part is, you make others happy as well!”

Custom Real Estate Solutions Kimberly Campbell

For most of us, buying or selling a home is one of the largest and most important investments we will make in our lives. And the reasons for buying or selling are as varied as the purchase itself. Regardless of the reason, it’s a very stressful time and the less complicated, the better. When Kimberly Campbell and her husband, Trevor, were looking to sell their home in Edmonton to move their family to Lethbridge they discovered a realtor assisted, for sale by owner brokerage that combined the expertise of a realtor, along with the savings of listing by owner. It was through the selling of their own home that Kimberly became interested in becoming a realtor herself. She was fascinated with the industry, especially with this concept and wanted to help others navigate their way through what can be a daunting as well as expensive experience. She received her license in 2012 and two years ago became a broker, launching her own brokerage with her husband to bring this innovative concept to Lethbridge. Custom Real Estate Solutions was the perfect name, as each package is custom designed to the individual they are working with. In one word what makes this concept stand out is: choices. And each of the choices offer substantial savings. Kimberly is excited about this new venture and looks forward to building the business and growing even more options as they move forward.

Intrigue Lingerie Boutique Rita McArthur & Colleen Armstrong

Rita McArthur and Colleen Armstrong were friends for many years before opening their business. Their husbands worked together and the two got to know each other through work functions over the years. In April 2007, they joined their husbands in New York for a conference. Colleen had just watched an Oprah Winfrey show on the importance of a proper bra fitting. They checked out the New York Boutiques, went for a fitting, and both ended up coming home with a suitcase full of bras. The New York trip inspired Rita, who realized there was no bra-fitting services in Lethbridge. In 2007 Rita said “Hey, do you want to open a store?” Colleen laughed at the time and said, “you’re crazy!” But Rita planted the seed in Colleen’s mind, and she started contacting lingerie vendors while on a trip to Palm Springs. Upon her return Colleen called Rita to say, “I think we can do this!” One of Rita’s favorite memories from that time was when the stock started showing up at the store. “It was like Christmas every day!” On May 15, 2008, only six months after Rita suggested starting the business, Intrigue Lingerie Boutique opened its doors to a lineup of women waiting outside. These two friends love the difference they’ve made in women’s lives, and this year the pair will announce new services they are offering to breast cancer and mastectomy patients as they forge ahead continuing to meet the needs of women in Lethbridge regardless of shape or size.

From the age of sixteen she knew she wanted to open a hair salon. In 2010, she won Business of the Year award in Young Entrepreneur from the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce for her initiative with a back to school project where she co-ordinated 19 salons to give haircuts to children and provide care packages for them. IG Wealth Management Barbara Wensley

Barbara Wensley always had a love of numbers growing up in Saskatoon, but she never thought that love would turn into a 27-year career in finance. In fact, in high school she aspired to be a veterinarian. Yet somehow, that dream led her to become the Sothern Alberta/East Kootenay Regional Director with IG Wealth Management almost nine years ago. Her story began in Brooks, AB where Barbara moved with her husband to work as an animal technician. A short time later, a friend asked if she’d like to work at the local Credit Union with her. It was the financial planning aspect of the job that helped Barbara realize her potential to help people in the community. She went back to school to get her Certified Financial Planning Professional Designation. Soon after, she had the opportunity to join IG Wealth Management. Seeing clients’ dreams come to fruition is part of Barbara’s favorite aspects of financial planning. In her role as Regional Director, she oversees the recruitment, training and coaching of new consultants which allows her to perceive these effects on an exponential level for the clients and consultants as well. Last year, IG Wealth Management joined a new program called Taking the Stage. This program allows Barbara the opportunity to present to women in the company across the country and help empower them to make their business flourish. Barbara says her goals for the future are to continue to encourage women to become business owners.

La Di Da Lane Photography Jennifer Aquila

If you asked Jennifer Aquila to write a thousand words about why she loves her career, she would show you a picture instead. Jennifer says she was always the girl with the camera growing up, but the idea of starting a career in the field never crossed her mind until she turned 30. Her background is in early literacy and teaching. It wasn’t until after her first son was born that she realized she wanted to start her own business and have the freedom to spend time with her family. When a friend showed her some pictures of her kids that she’d had done in Utah, she knew then that’s what she wanted to do. Her friend told her that the photographer was a mom with a home studio, and Jen found this a perfect fit for her passion and goals. She started training with online courses and with local instructor, Henriette Plas. She says at first it was overwhelming trying to learn everything, but she was passionate and kept studying and practising on friends. In 2009, she was ready to establish La Di Da Lane and launched her website. Jen thrives on bringing families together during the photo shoot. “My favorites are the ones where the mom is connecting with her child, or the parents are laughing at the kids being crazy”. Her goal in the future is to get back to her teaching roots, helping other aspiring photographers with online marketing strategies, writing how-to blogs and providing mentorship.

Unity Field Healing

By: Heather Gunn, RN,MSN,CCHt

Through the work of Einstein, we learned that all of life is composed of energy in various states of condensed light. Since that time, humanity has expressed a growing interest and deeper understanding of the energetic nature of the human body and also in the role consciousness plays in both healing and well-being. Through this process, we are also becoming aware of the spiritual nature of reality and life itself. Evidence from the growing field of the sub-atomic world of quantum physics tells us that we are co-creators of our experiences and that our very thoughts can make or break our state of health. It is as if a veil is being lifted so that we may better comprehend this shift in awareness and through this process we become more deeply rooted in our understanding of our innate abilities to sustain our own health. These changes stimulate our interest in energy-based healing modalities which support our biospiritual transformation into beings much greater than just a mass of muscles, bones and cells called “the body”.

According to Dr. John Ryan, M.D., Canadian radiologist and founder of energybased Unity Field Healing (UFH), we are limited in our understanding of this concept because we do not yet have the scientific power to see this “quantum energy” effectively; therefore, it is challenging to prove it exists except through personal experiences. This perception quickly changes as one is introduced to the

energy and the experience of quantum healing processes. As people begin to have profound personal experiences through quantum healing, it dispels the doubt that exists in our western minds. At this time, science is limited in its current ability to grasp this understanding based on technological limitations. The day will come when we can see this energy but, for now, it requires a great deal of faith and a deeply personal experience of energy-based healing. This transformation occurs at the inner or invisible level of life - the quantum level - by adjusting energies that tend to hold energy patterns in one’s life that lead to certain physical and psychological limitations that affect our health. By recalibrating our foundation at the level of our DNA through energy-based healing, our state of consciousness helps us develop and maintain our personal energy system in a higher, balanced vibrational state.

Your DNA is a molecule that holds the blueprint for your body through your genes. However, the information that defines what is unique about your DNA is not simply “in the genes”. Science has begun to demonstrate a few special things about the nature of our DNA. It has been found to have an intelligent energy field that is distinct from the chemical structure of DNA. This DNA field appears to provide a quantum bridge or energy gateway to the consciousness of the creator within you; therefore, your state of health is deeply connected to who you think you are, or who you believe yourself to be. In other words, every thought, feeling, emotion and belief that you experience will affect your state of health. For example, imagine how depression in your mind could depress your immune system or a shocking disappointment might “break your heart”.

Human healing is a vast and complex topic. Dr. Ryan tells us that the hope to heal is not simply a desire to feel better or to eradicate an illness, it is our desire to reunite with our state of being whole and complete. When we speak of healing today, much of our faith to heal lies in modern medicine and science. Although science achieves marvelous things, it remains limited in many ways in its capacity to provide healing due to its inability to fully grasp the energetic nature of the human experience. He reminds us that when science fails in healing, we tend to turn to our spiritual nature where we will find many healing wisdoms. Here, we discover that the greatest force of healing ever known lies in our consciousness and that the power to heal profoundly lies within you. Experiencing energy and consciousness-based healing can awaken your profound potential to heal as it ignites hope and inspires faith as they provide you with resilience, strength and transformation. It is through this portal that we access a new understanding of the healing potential that lies within. We are powerful healers if only we open our minds and our hearts and fully embrace our consciousness.

LESSONS I’VE LEARNED FROM MY DOGS By Jean Van Kleek

“Happiness and health come from being who we are, and acknowledging we each have a purpose.”

I’ve often written about my dog Shani and her obsession with her ball. I spoke about how having a passion and focus has helped her deal with a disease that often takes the lives or health of dogs much younger than her. I was convinced that passion and a mission are key in keeping us well. I have to say, the more I’ve watched Bella, my thoughts have changed. Happiness and health come from being who we are, and acknowledging we each have a purpose. Bella isn’t on any mission, has no obsessions; in fact, when both went to agility training, the trainer said, “I think she’s lazy!” Shani concentrated on doing well and was proud of her accomplishments as she pranced.

Bella, on the other hand, would see Shani at the other end of the course and just run to her, forgetting she was in the middle of a “level” (and didn’t care). All Bella cares about is that she is with the people she loves. No grand ambition, just a want to be close. For every person who feels the need to achieve, there is usually someone in their life who balances their anxiety, and helps bring them back to “centre”. By simply “being”, these people remind the rest of us what is most important… and that is: happiness isn’t found by “getting” anywhere, it just “is”. These are the people who truly make a difference. God bless the “Bellas” of the world.
