W In the corner area of Jl. Setiabudi is where this building is located. The conditions of the surrounding site have a high density of people activity because it lie on a commercial district. This Mix-use house consist of two different function of building that merged into one single building. The first one is functioned as a notary office, while the other one is the owners house. The challenge of this project is how to make this two different function can able to merged into one without intersects one another and also gaining a good quality of dwelling such as high privacy, a good circulation and enough amount of sunlight falls into its interior.

The front mass has a lower height to maintain the comfort of urban space arround it

Amount of sunlight are being neutralized through building shading, secondary skin and facades

Vertical wind tunnel are installed into the very middle of the building to accelerate the quality of wind circulation in the interiors. Besides, along edge of the building also has a free 1 meter space to gain a better wind circulation

Final planning of the building has a accertive boundary of where private zone and public zone are. Without intersecting each different functions, the building should have gain comfort

a young lady standing across from the front view of the building.

The whole building are designed with a soft color tone like natural color of timber itself, exposed concrete and white painted wall with a liitle bit of roughness. Picture above shown a quite tall boundary wall to give more privacy to the dwelling inside. this design even give some free space of pedestrian outside the boundary wall because the existing condition doesnt have any proper pedestrian way to be used.

going into the terrace, there is a mini pond that covered by a single medium size tree with some sitting area below it. a space can not only be formed by building a wall or something alike, but also can be formed by paying close attention to the surrounding objects, such as the formation of shadows from the object itself which ultimately forms a comfortable small space.

The facade pattern are meant to bring a more dynamic looks while also have the feature to penetrate and bring light to the interiors.

HOTEL AND SHOPPING CENTER Location Area Project Year Status

: : : :

Jl. Gatot Subroto, Medan 3 Ha 2017 Assignment

The city of Medan has experienced the development of infrastructure which has been increasing rapidly lately, such as the presence of hi-rise buildings such as Podomoro City Deli, and other hi-rise buildings with a mix-use concept. However, these developments tend not to be concerned with the surrounding environment, so that the built buildings do not have the slightest positive impact on their environment even for the long term. So from this hi-rise building design with the function of mix-use, it is expected to be the first pioneer to apply the sustainable concept into its building. The intended sustainable development tends to be more towards the green side, incorporating green elements into the building. The concept was chosen because the city of Medan has been getting less green land, so it needs to revive the green land to every building design.

The design location is on the Gatot Subroto road. It is an arterial road that connects the city of Medan with the City of Binjai, making it suitable for building buildings with functions of hotels and shopping centers. Â The design area is about 30,000 m2. Where hotels of that size will be built as well as shopping centers and supporting facilities such as parking buildings and public parks that can be used for the community.

total area of the site is 3.0 Ha, the site is widening aside and there is only one side of the site that has openings to the highway

commercial

The location of each building function is adjusted to the function zone around the site. Malls tend to be in the position of commercial zones, hotels tend to be in the position of residential and mixuse zones, and parking buildings that are hidden behind the site serve as parking areas and service

Coakan Tower Hotel was made so as to comfort the scale of the space around the tower, as well as to make it more memorable welcoming, where the tower becomes like facing the road to the Binjai community. This hotel will attract more visitors from Binjai City

The pedestrian site is designed around the entire building except the back side of the site which is a service circulation path

Around the building is designed as green open space and plazas to create a dynamic outdoor atmosphere. The side site is planted with trees to limit the zone next to the site and to the privatization of the site. While the front side of the site is not too many shady trees so as not to cover the outside view into the site. The front area of RTH site can be used for events such as food festivals, as well as other events

hotel pedestrian mall

Access to enter the site is separated between the Hotel line and the Shopping Center. Separation of circulation is intended to prevent crossing between circulation that has different properties and goals and functions. Circulation is deliberately stretched inside the site to avoid congestion outside the site

The whole concept of this site produces a site context that is expected to be integrated with the mall atmosphere in order to create a more harmonious relationship between outer and inner space

The mass of the upper Shopping Center building is pulled forward as a canopy function for the pedestrian below

Coil void as Atrium Mall, so that lighting in the shopping mall can be more optimal and able to save electricity energy in the morning to evening. The voids are also useful for air circulation, as well as increasing the harmonious value of the unified inside and outside space

Most of the Rooftop garden area is covered using a wide space frame roof. This space frame propagates and centers on the main atrium so that it opens up an opening in the atrium where rain can enter

The mass of the hotel tower is bent into an L shape, with a double loaded concept. The curve of L facing the road comes to the city of Binjai, intending to attract visitors from the city of Binjai. The L shape is memorable welcoming

The top of the tower is set back into a bit as a response to the comfort of the scale of space around the tower so that it does not feel tense in the atmosphere of the space scale

On every floor of the tower building is given a horizontal void and filled with recreational facilities and skygarden with an outdoor concept. So when you are on the floor above the occupants can also enjoy the natural atmosphere

The concept of open green space is lifted from the land to the podium of the shopping center. The podium roof area functions as a rooftop garden and an F & B area that is designed to be outdoor

The width of the tower is about 30 meters wide, the middle section is given a vertical void from the bottom to the top that aims to insert light into the interior of the corridor, and facilitate air circulation, and save electricity

The overall concept of the building is expected to reduce energy use, but can produce energy instead. And able to become a sustainable building

Jl. Letda Sujono - Jl. Aksara, Medan Tembung 400 m2 2018 Undergraduate Project

Academic Undergraduate Project 8th Semester // 2018 Architecture Studio #6 Department of Architecture North Sumatera University

Nowadays, many people tend to go to shopping mall rather than go to a slum place like traditional market that slowly makes the traditional market existence getting exstinct as time goes by. But in this case, actually its not the shopping mall that has to be blame but its actually the market itself that people already have an image of a dirty place, bad quality of their selling product, and bad security, when the shopping mall already have a very clean space, provided a lot of product to sell, and a good security service that makes visitor feels comfortable. Even Though, the Traditional market actually has a huge contribution to the economy of a region.

So, The main idea of this design is to restore the image of many people about traditional market which is dirty and other negative thinking into a clean and more feasilby to be visited. One way is to integrate the market with the mall. The market that connected to the mall will indirectly force the market to have a clean and good security. This way, hope it will change the people’s image about traditional market.

SITE STORY the location is in the old site of Buana Plaza which was the only mall located in Tembung Sub-district. It was an integrated mall and traditional market. But, in July 2016, there was a fire that burnt down the mall and its market too that made the market trader got nowhere to sell their things.

Neo-vernacular concept

The neo-vernacular architecture not only applies physical elements that are applied in modern forms but also non-physical elements such as culture, mindset, belief, layout, religion and others. - Leon Krier In this Design, the designer tries to apply both physical and non-physical elements of the local wisdom into the building. By injecting the nearby culture such as the building layout structure, the unique roof shape, and also the ornamentations, the designer hopes that this building will not only adapting with modernization but also able to preserving the past culture value.

In some point, Neo-Vernacular is like a museum. Museum has the principle of conserving something valuable so that it will not being forgotten. Neo-Vernacular also like that. It conserves something valuable in the modern era but with a modern way like only take the small important part of one culture.

the concept is inspired from the museum very basic concept like conserving any valuable relics inside a glass box or a painting in a canvas. The method is by placing the mandailing roof shape into the simple-shaped box of mall so the visual will be more focus on the roof shape itself.

the mall building are being transformed in accordance with the concept previosuly described above. The malls facade will act as a plain white polycarbonate ‘canvas’ with the painting of Mandailing roof shape.

Natural lightings are brought into the interior through the building’s facade and also from the skylight in both buildings

the building is divided into two with different function. the front building will be a market and the other one will be a shopping mall with a higher scale of height

some of the building part are being push inside for the entrance purpose, which will make the ‘welcoming’ feels warmer. the middle of the building is being push down forming a circular plaza that will be function as the main communal space

Green open space is provided in the landscape such as leisure park for leisuer area, sidewalk filled with the forest ambience. The building infront will have a green roof installed

the market building will be transformed into denser form of Mandailing Roof because of the building position in the front side, and also the scale is smaller than the mall which will make the visual of this market will be seen first

the space between the buildings formed a better air corridor. The wall between the center corridor will ‘suck’ the wind from one direction and blow away in the other direction.

the final design as shown above will offer not only a good visual or a new first integrated market and mall but also provided a comfortable scale of space in the surrounding urban area.

Medan City is a city rich in ethnic diversity. This of course also triggered the birth of cultural diversity in the city of Medan. But until now, the city of Medan has not contributed to the problem of cultural preservation in the city of Medan. As a result, gradually the city of Medan will develop by losing a value that is very important to maintain, namely Culture. So from this problem, the site was chosen in the aur village which is a strategic location in the center of the city with a considerable diversity of ethnic and cultural groups. From the center of this cultural community, it is expected to be able to contribute to the future community such as “nostalgia back to ethnic diversity and culture in the city of Medan.

SITE

The Medan Maimun area, precisely in the Aur village, is a strategic area for designing the center of the cultural community. The location of the site which is located on the banks of the Deli River in the village of Aur and is in the center of the city has become a potential to become a media that is easily accessible to all residents to come to know and learn about the locality culture in their own city. Location of site on jl. This Mangkubumi is in a commercial area that is quite dense with diverse functions. The majority of the population around the site are Hindu, Batak, and Melayu tribes.

The form of transformation of building masses is taken from the basic form / similarity of forms from some traditional traditional houses with the dominance of wood material. The concept of the stage house is also applied in the form of the building.

the concept of choosing a clay tile as the facades material is that it has a unique shape that looks resemblant to ornaments if arranged in groups. Besides, it is also cheap, lightweight, and have a long lifespan which leads this material to be included as a sustainable material. The making process of this material is planned to be made by residents around the site itself with the aim of increasing awareness of the community of the building art itself.

The site is 0.8 Ha with a form of almost rectangular shaped site and one side facing the deli river.

Circulation is formed with a radial / centered concept with a more road orientation facing the building. Each sequence is given a diverse experience of space and atmosphere.

The shape of the building represents the majority culture in Medan. workshop units as the main mass support facility.

The outdoor area is designed with dominant green open space that has a different function space for each zone.

The mass of the building is divided into several modules like a row of traditional Jabu Bolon houses.

the orientation of the mass is responsive to the orientation of the sun with the fewer sides facing the sun.

All zones at the site are connected to a main node in the middle which has a majority orientation facing the main mass, which in this design is expected to be able to revive high cultural values and also citizens awareness of their own culture values.

Final Design Proposal

Deli Riverbank Arrangement that often occurs flood overflow can be overcome by making terraces which are contoured in stages. The concept of the building uses the concept of a stilt house to avoid being flooded. From the terracing design planted with kiambang plants (water cleaning plants), it is expected to be able to clean the water flowing into the river so that slowly the river water will also be clean and in the future it will be able to reduce the intensity of river overflowing.

Evaluating Owners need

The building consist of two identical form of villas that the owner asked to combine it become one single housing that also will looks stand out from the surrounding villas unit

Form Massing

the process of form massing is done by splitting the house with the one next to it so that it will able to gain more sunlight and also good air circulation, and splitting the front and back side that formed an H letter house to create a couryard.

Efficiency Energy

Climate Adaptation

East and north side will have more opening to bring more sunlight into inside and also to give the air circulation better. the front side of the house will have a setback below that will make the upper level act as canopy

Tropical climate requiring every houses to have roof style rather than flat concrete flooring like every shophouse ever has nowadays. This house will renovate its existing flat concrete floor to become gable roof so that the interior will feels less heat and also faster draining water to the ground Final Proposal
