Founded in 1986, Architecture, Incorporated is a 60-person, award-winning planning, architecture, and interior design practice. SPORTSANDTRAINING
Architecture, Inc. has proven success in the planning and design of complex multi-use facilities for training, fitness, and a variety of other specialized uses. Firing Ranges and the Shooting Sports bring about new challenges with concerns for ballistic protection, acoustical isolation and treatment, and operational procedures for staff and visitors. Our buildings accommodate a broad range of building and programmatic elements that extend from indoor firing ranges out to 100 yards, firearms rental and retail operations, video simulators and training equipment, food service operations, and many other related areas of architectural practice.
Our experience includes professional sports teams with NBA, NHL, and WNBA facilities; upscale fitness clubs and studios; build-to-suit specialty facilities; as well as sports and recreation amenities shared by schools and communities. Architecture, Inc. has worked with numerous local, municipal, state, and federal agencies to bring projects to realization at various scales, ranging from small interior renovations, to comprehensive interior fit-outs of multi-story buildings, and of complex, ground-up new construction.

XCAL SHOOTING SPORTS & FITNESS

XCAL is a 94,000 sf facility that provides a wide variety of recreational activities at the growing One Loudoun development. The goal for XCAL was to deliver a high end user experience at every operation of the building and as soon as you walk in the door. The first level features two 25-yard shooting ranges totaling 20 shooting lanes and also includes 5 completely private ranges. It also has 18,000 sf of retail, training rooms, offices, and a café with juice bar.
The second level incorporates 36,000 sf of gym and fitness-oriented areas including cardio machines, a Dojo hall, a connected indoor and outdoor space for group athletic classes, saunas, a massage suite, and 6,500 sf of indoor/outdoor high intensity training area. It also contains a 10,000 sf high-end VIP lounge area that incorporates a full-service bar, several conference rooms, a billiards room, cigar lounge, and an outdoor patio for both members and private events.

Elite Shooting Sports is a 65,000 sf innovative indoor firing range facility for use by the general public, members, as well as local and Federal agencies. The 42lane facility features four ranges at 25, 50, and 100 yards with shooting stalls separated by ballistic glass. The design objectives centered on the creation of a welcoming and safe environment for both shooters and non-shooters alike.
In addition to the ranges, the program includes a club room, retail area, gunsmith shop, classrooms, a café, and locker rooms. A specialized feature is a modular two-story Simunition shoot house for training courses. The project incorporated the best technology available for firing range equipment including a high-tech video simulation space. High-quality tilt-up concrete construction was utilized for improved shell building construction speed and cost efficiencies.

Heritage is a 32,000 sf indoor firing range with two 25 yard ranges with 24 lanes. The emphasis was to be education and training for personal protection, so the facility includes two video simulation labs along with two group training rooms. The entrance lobby is large and inviting with a waiting area while separate spaces for firearms retail, gunsmithing, and a catering kitchen allows for many different events and classes to be offered.
This inaugural location, for a prototype plan developed to be applied in multiple locations, was inserted into an existing building, and required modifications to the structure to create an obstruction free range. For safety, both ranges are surrounded by a steel and concrete ballistic envelope, and a special acoustic consultant was brought onboard to assure that sound and blast from the firing ranges did not detract from activities outside of the ranges.
