Considerations for a software upgrade roadmap Björn Rodén @ IBM Technical University in Cannes, October 2015
1. Determine the software and hardware stack for each cluster node – Within server system to server resources – From server cluster node systems to application systems (feeding/retrieving systems) 2. Determine proper no-SPOF configuration for current design – Are there known design restrictions, resource constraints, depletions or contentions? – Are basic PowerVM virtualization features used, such as: • •
Micro Partitioning with shared capped/uncapped processor entitlement VIOS and VSCSI or NPIV, VETH with or without SEA VLAN load sharing
– Are advanced PowerVM virtualization features used, such as: •
LPM, SPP, AME, AMS with or without de-duplication
– Firmware and microcode levels • •
For server systems For storage and network equipment
3. Establish current base level support matrix 4. Identify any known issues – With supported levels – With combination of supported levels 5. Perform Proof-of-Concept to verify – Software, microcode, and configuration settings

IBM AIX Operating System Release and Service Strategy Björn Rodén @ IBM Technical University in Cannes, October 2015
This paper describes the IBM AIX operating system (OS) Release and Service Strategy • The strategy provide: – Three years of new fix support for each AIX OS Technology Level update – One Technology Level per AIX version per year, per AIX release, typically in the second half of the year – Service Packs for Technology Levels will be released about four times per year
For more information on Release and Service Strategy: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/support/release_strategy.html http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/best/aix_service_strategy.pdf © Copyright IBM Corporation 2015

Managing AIX Updates using SUMA, NIM, and AIX Service Tools Björn Rodén @ IBM Technical University in Cannes, October 2015
• This paper details a method of using the AIX Service Update Management Assistant (SUMA) to download AIX Technology Levels (TL’s), Service Packs (SP’s), and PTF’s from an AIX fix server, and then using the Network Installation Manager (NIM) to install the updates to various NIM clients. – Determining a method to keep a network of systems up-to-date with AIX software updates can be challenging. – A solution may involve establishing a way to download updates to a NIM master, maintaining updates on a NIM master, and using the repositories of updates on the NIM master to update various client systems.

System Firmware
IBM Power Systems System Firmware (Microcode) Björn Rodén @ IBM Technical University in Cannes, October 2015
• Keeping firmware current will help in attaining the maximum reliability and functionality from your systems. • Release Levels – New functions are released via firmware Release Levels. – New Release Levels are targeted to be released twice a year. – Installation of a new Release Level is disruptive. – Unless you require the functions or features introduced by the latest Release Level, it is generally prudent to wait one to three months until Release Level stability has been demonstrated in the field. •
http://www-304.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/power5cm/home.html
– Stay on Release Levels that are supported via Service Packs to continue to receive firmware fixes. • Service Packs – The first Service Pack will generally be released approximately six to eight weeks following a Release Level and then subsequently at 3 to 4-month intervals. – Updates to Service Packs within the same Release Level can be performed concurrently.

Microcode Discovery Service (MDS) Björn Rodén @ IBM Technical University in Cannes, October 2015
• Microcode Discovery Service and the invscout command – The MDS website: • http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/mds/
– Use the AIX invscout command to check the currently installed microcode levels on physical hardware • http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/aix/v6r1/topic/com.ibm.aix.cmds/doc/aixcmds3/invscout.htm
• How to run MDS 1. Select partitions that have physical adapters 2. Download the most current microcode catalog text file: • http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/mdownload/catalog.mic 3. As root, replace the /var/adm/invscout/microcode/catalog.mic with the downloaded 4. As root, run the command invscout • The invscout command will create the /var/adm/invscout/HOSTNAME.mup file 5. To generate a report with recommendations for the currently installed microcode levels, upload the /var/adm/invscout/HOSTNAME.mup to the IBM MDS website: • http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/mds/fetch?page=mdsUpload.html – Note: Concatenate several .mup files into one file, and upload once to create a consolidated report. – Also: 1. Before installing any microcode, be sure to review each README file AND follow the instructions, and if necessary schedule a service window. 2. Always use the latest microcode catalog file, if not the MDS report will contain a warning. © Copyright IBM Corporation 2015

Considerations for deploying
Server Evacuation Björn Rodén @ IBM Technical University in Cannes, October 2015
• Live Partition Mobility – Live Partition Mobility allows you to migrate running partitions from one physical server to another without disrupting infrastructure services. •
Active Partition Mobility –
•
Active Partition Migration is the actual movement of a running LPAR from one physical machine to another without disrupting the operation of the OS and applications running in that LPAR.
Inactive Partition Mobility –
Inactive Partition Migration transfers a partition that is logically ‘powered off’ (not running) from one system to another. Inactive Partition Migration transfers a partition that is logically ‘powered off’ (not running) from one system to another
– The migration transfers the entire partition state, including processor context, memory, attached virtual devices, and connected users.
• Power Enterprise Pools – A Power Enterprise Pool is a group of servers that can share Mobile Capacity on Demand (CoD) processor resources and memory resources. Use cases to consider for Power Enterprise Pools include: •
Live Partition Mobility (LPM) – When using LPM for scheduled maintenance or partition relocation, mobile activations can be shifted from the LPM source server to the LPM target server. The IBM Lab Services LPM Automation Toolkit automates the movement of the lpars using LPM and activates the target mobile resources and then deactivates source mobile resources.
•
High Availability cluster nodes – If the primary partition or server fails, mobile activations can be moved from the primary server to the secondary server.
•
Disaster Recovery – With a single HMC network across sites mobile activations can be moved between servers in different sites Rebalancing server capacity – Mobile activations can be moved between servers to make best use of core and memory resources. Mobile activations can also be use to temporarily relocate resources for period end processing or full-scale performance testing.
